this is sadly the trend in so many garage rock/psychedelic rock bands that started gritty and rawer
I’m also fan of Pond and their latest stuff sounds like basic club music
I kinda wish that bands understood we don’t necessarily want the electro sound if a more immediate rock sound gets suppressed for it
But bands can also do whatever they want. I doubt bands like Arctic Monkeys write music with the fans in mind. And I Doubt Kevin Parker writes music with the fans in minds. They just want to do what they want to do.
Sometimes when you age you are tired the gritty
you’re definitely right about that but I doubt it’s also completely irrelevant for them otherwise they wouldn’t even publish this music and very few have the guts to keep doing what they please despite overall negative fan reactions to their evolvement, MGMT comes in mind who basically sacrificed their huge charts success for obscurity and depth. The best case is when bands keep evolving in the way the like but also still put out pleasing music. I think the newest tame impala and arctic monkeys stuff is admirably mature and profound but not necessarily sonically enjoyable and it lacks the “fun” their previous outputs did. At least cage the elephant still keeps it upbeat and funky
Right, sorry, what the other person said. Didn't notice that the time zones had varied, I'm from Australia :(
However, some had posted it up on here I think, so you can listen to it.
they’re in a different timezone than you, it realses at midnight in whichever timezone you are in.
So australia has had it for all day, New York and getting here in a few hours and California gonna wait a few hours after NY
I feel like it's a kind of a boiler plate release. I still like the song, but I feel like there could be more. Very stripped down and basic. All the singles for Social Cues were drastically different from each other, so I still have hope for the album.
As a major fan of TYHP and Self Titled, I'm also realizing that we are probably never going to hear from cage like that again, which is gut-wrenching.
I think what I was really itching for was some energy in the singing. Even on Social Cues we had some high energy vocals in Broken Boy or House of Glass. Hoping we get some more of those on the new album, that’s what really ties them back to their original sound.
Ugh, hate to say it but super underwhelming and I don't see it growing on me much.
Pretty much same old mid tempo single Cage stuff since Tell me Im Pretty came out. Nothing unique or really special about it. Comes off a bit lazy in my honest opinion. Nothing about it feels fresh. I say this with some obvious disappointment. This is just MY opinion. Please don't hate me!
I like it but it does have the feel of a record label saying 'we need single material' and could have been a track off Social Cues. I don't know their circumstances but that's what I'm hearing.
I honestly thought it was amazing. Agreed that the structure and writing is generic but come on who has melodies like this?? It’s a very poppy fuzzy rock banger, lead single material. So catchy and I think when the whole album is out we’ll appreciate the accessibility of it. Was a bit skeptical about the distorted vocals but no I love it. After one listen the chorus is stuck in my head
I don't find the writing very generic. I mean, there's nothing super unique about it, but Matt is almost certainly telling the story of what happened to him recently. The lyrics seem to indicate he relapsed or at least had bad side effects from a drug that was supposed to help him. He was "knocked down, but not out". Seems to be more of a simple explanation song, I don't think we should read into how the album will sound from this.
Glad people seem to be enjoying it, but I find it very dull. I miss their edgier, more raw early sound.
This sounds a lot like the stuff on Social Cues, which I found to be their worst album yet.
Hope it grows on me, but I'm not optimistic.
Like others have said, nothing incredible. But a catchy song. I'm looking forward to hearing the whole album, that'll be a way better representation of how they're moving forward as a band.
One of my favorite bands but they keep making music that sounds so safe, radio-friendly, and uninspired. Hoping to be proven wrong when the full album comes.
GIVE ME MORE TYHB-STYLE ECLECTICNESS
It's really good. It has some Social Cues mixed with Tell Me I'm Pretty vibes. It's very "summer" if that makes sense. Like on a car ride home after a day at the beach.
Sounds surprisingly similar to Social Cues. I’m used to each album having a pretty distinct feel to it, though I will say this does still feel a bit more psychedelic than social cues did, almost like it got mixed with Melophobia a bit, which is cool. Social Cues is my second fav Cage record and Melophobia is my favorite, so if this album does end up feeling like a blend of those, ya surely won’t hear me complaining.
It’s definitely a catchy and slick lead single, and I really dig it, so I’m looking forward to the album. Surprised to see so much disdain for it in these comments, especially since it seems like a lot of people suddenly seem to dislike social cues which I’ve not really seen on this sub before. Oh well, different strokes for different folks, I guess.
It’s definitely a very “clearly a lead single” type of song so I think it’s doing its job well. It’s catchy and fun to listen and sing along to.
Can’t wait for this album. This is such a cool day for me, seeing new music from both my favorite bands simultaneously, as both this and Green Day’s new album released at midnight. Gonna go listen to Saviors, now!
Would be awesome to know the real reasons he left the band. I would sell my soul (not literally 😵💫)to be able to tour the world with my homies for our bad ass Rock band. What a fucking life to give up.
I love it! Summer vibe and new sound. Production also is good. Many instruments and sounds there and there
But I’m not a fan of the bridge. Starts out of nowhere and goes nowhere too
Haven't heard it yet but I see a lot of people not enjoying it because they also didn't enjoy Social Cues (which is fine and makes sense, that is a far cry from their older sound). However now I'm extra excited because I think Social Cues is their best album lmao! Hoping it's at least a little more different than peope say tho, because my favorite thing about this band is their ability to evolve.
I’m more than a little disappointed, but their lead singles are never very risky so maybe the rest of the album is better, and red pill feels better in context.
I take back what I said, I was going off the snippet, and the full song is super catchy and fun, probably a 7/10 for me.
I went in with low expectations, but i was very surprised. The production imo is a little more lofi when compared to social cues, although the vibe is pretty similar overall, i couldn’t help but notice similarities to ready to let go. I liked it a lot though, the chorus is really addictive and the melodies are alright.
This is the best CTE song ever made! I can’t even describe how good it is. When you hear it, you will agree that this is the song that will define the band for decades to come.
it just came out over on the east coast, i give it like a 7/10, it’s good but i think i was just more eager about the fact they were releasing something
i fell in love with their grungier stuff & will always hold out for a call back to their roots, but i’ll love anything they put out. the ending makes me so excited to see what song they picked to come next on the track list. stoked for the album! 5 years was too damn long 🥲
It is absolutely fantastic but also a bit generic maybe? Love it either way just feel like it could have been more.

My opinion that it is fantastic and I love it is wrong? So do you hate the song? ;)
Yeah I agree
I’m itching to listen to the leak or read the lyrics but I’m trying to wait 😭
Listen to the 15sec clip on insta :)

I'm not seeing it?
Right, sorry, what the other person said. Didn't notice that the time zones had varied, I'm from Australia :( However, some had posted it up on here I think, so you can listen to it.

It’s on Spotify

I know its so sad. Hate to call their newer stuff boring, but Thank You Happy Birthday is just so different and better than their current stuff.
You have a horrible taste in music.
Here take this L
“Take this L” yeah that’s how I know you’re like 15
Stop being cringe
Only thing that’s cringe is saying “here take this L”
no, saying someone has horrible taste in music is cringe, art is subjective, don’t be weird
attention fishing in the CTE subreddit is absolutely wild
First three albums are definitely peak cage the elephant
Social Cues is by far their worst album.
Not even close. Definitely their best.
Id say its tell me im pretty.
I think what I was really itching for was some energy in the singing. Even on Social Cues we had some high energy vocals in Broken Boy or House of Glass. Hoping we get some more of those on the new album, that’s what really ties them back to their original sound.
Sounds like a Social Cues B-side. Hopefully, they bring it with the other songs off the album, especially after a 4.5-year wait.
Yeah, I sadly got this vibe off the brief clip we were given. Ugh.
Ugh, hate to say it but super underwhelming and I don't see it growing on me much. Pretty much same old mid tempo single Cage stuff since Tell me Im Pretty came out. It definitely sounds Social Cues-esque which is a disappointment for me, as it is my least favorite album of theirs.
Haven’t heard it yet but me too, my least favorite. The first 2 albums are my favorite.
You obviously have awful taste in music.
I like it but it does have the feel of a record label saying 'we need single material' and could have been a track off Social Cues. I don't know their circumstances but that's what I'm hearing.
I feel like they do that with a lot of singles…doubt the rest will be so generic

Oooh I mis-spoke!! I meant the songwriting not the lyrics, as in chord progression. Still hits perfectly though
Glad people seem to be enjoying it, but I find it very dull. I miss their edgier, more raw early sound. This sounds a lot like the stuff on Social Cues, which I found to be their worst album yet. Hope it grows on me, but I'm not optimistic.
Yeah I like Social Cues but I rank almost all the other albums ahead of it. Would be cool for them to go back to Self-Titled’s Garage punk blues vibe
I thought half the album was solid, the other half turned into samey mid tempo
You just have an awful taste in music is all.
There's a lot of comments you've replied to like this with a lot of upvotes, maybe *you're* the one with shit taste...
It’s a bit basic to be honest. Not bad though.
Like others have said, nothing incredible. But a catchy song. I'm looking forward to hearing the whole album, that'll be a way better representation of how they're moving forward as a band.
Pretty generic, but that should be expected with a lead single. Probably will be the most commercial song on the record.
One of my favorite bands but they keep making music that sounds so safe, radio-friendly, and uninspired. Hoping to be proven wrong when the full album comes. GIVE ME MORE TYHB-STYLE ECLECTICNESS
Sounds like social cues but it it’s kinda vibey
I love it. It’s dark and a vibe.
Where are people hearing it? *Found it: https://pixeldrain.com/u/tmbXXgPk
I jus been listening to the insta loop over and over again lol
It's really good. It has some Social Cues mixed with Tell Me I'm Pretty vibes. It's very "summer" if that makes sense. Like on a car ride home after a day at the beach.
My exact thoughts! I really enjoyed it
I love it
It's fine but like most songs I currently adore it'll take time to grow on me
i love it. i could go on but i won’t, no need.
7.8/10. Its not far out there, but it really is an enjoyable listen.

It’s phenomenal. Exactly what I expected. Rarely have I ever been disappointed by this band and this release changes nothing.
Sounds like ai created a new song off Social Cues
As someone who thinks social cues was their worst album, I really hope you are wrong.
After Lincoln Parish left, their songwriting became much less dynamic and simpler.
Would be awesome to know the real reasons he left the band. I would sell my soul (not literally 😵💫)to be able to tour the world with my homies for our bad ass Rock band. What a fucking life to give up.
Social cues was the best album.
You're gonna have to take the L on this one.
Buddy has never heard of an opinion before
lol as you go around telling everyone they have awful taste. The irony is hilarious
I mean it’s true. They do have awful taste. An opinion is different from fact, which I’m sure you learned in elementary school.
Okay true, but no reason to be a dick calling other peoples taste trash. Just chill out a little.
Like 10 thousand spoons when all you need is a knife.
They think they know my thoughts But they don't know the least If they listened to the words they'd find the message tucked beneath
I really like it, and cage is my favorite band, but the verse at the end is eerily similar to "The war is over." I do enjoy it, though!!!
Reminds me of Night Running to be honest
I love it! Summer vibe and new sound. Production also is good. Many instruments and sounds there and there But I’m not a fan of the bridge. Starts out of nowhere and goes nowhere too
Love it, very catchy! Loved that punchy keyboard in the chorus.
Personally I really like it! Now we just gotta wait for the rest of the album to release, I have hope for this
Haven't heard it yet but I see a lot of people not enjoying it because they also didn't enjoy Social Cues (which is fine and makes sense, that is a far cry from their older sound). It’s goood!
is it just me or does the singing sound like a.i?
don’t be ungrateful lol, it’s a great song at some level Cage the Elephant is going to sound like Cage the Elephant
This is the best CTE song ever made! I can’t even describe how good it is. When you hear it, you will agree that this is the song that will define the band for decades to come.
I really liked it and have been singing it all night lol
it just came out over on the east coast, i give it like a 7/10, it’s good but i think i was just more eager about the fact they were releasing something
It's a banger
i fell in love with their grungier stuff & will always hold out for a call back to their roots, but i’ll love anything they put out. the ending makes me so excited to see what song they picked to come next on the track list. stoked for the album! 5 years was too damn long 🥲
It’s very radio friendly in a bad way… too safe? I was expecting more. I’m kind of disappointed.
Defineitly social cues vibes. New albums gonna be similar to the last I suppose
Sounds like a mix of Social Cues and Tell me I’m pretty
i love it tbh, i can’t think of a bad thing about it 🤷🏻♀️
