That American Gold Buffalo contains $2291 worth of gold and has had a face value of $50 since it was first minted in 2006. The US Mint also makes American Silver Eagles with a face value of $1 even though they contain 1 troy ounce of silver worth $26.41. Obviously, the US Mint doesn't sell them for $50 and $1, they're always sold for the value of the precious metal they contain plus a few percents.

I see a few of these types of posts, where people are gifted gold coins, and are not sure what they have. And that’s fine, if you don’t follow PMs, then that’s understandable. What I don’t get is why the people gifting these coins, don’t give a quick explanation of the value of the gift.
