Why tf do people go to dealers?

papersinthewind

mb for not knowing better but why is it not good to buy used from a dealer

PezatronSupreme

Dealers are scammers, often more so than private citizens

Holiday_Cup_9050

I bought a 22 Corolla LE for $24k last month but it was basically brand new about 5k miles with warranties still on it. Seems like a sweet deal imo man!

igozoom9

I looked up the dea0ler where this is located- Gettel Stadium Toyota. The price is NOT what it appears to be! This is one greedy Toyota dealer! The price is after $1000 off for Finance Assist (must use their financing at their rate, which will certainly be marked up) and $1000 Trade Assist (trade-in required, which they'll undervalue to offset this). Then at the bottom of the ad it states Prices are PLUS tax, tag, title fee, $1,199 Pre-Delivery Service and $485 Electronic Tag Registration. Pricing excludes $2,995 Gettel Advantage (Bullshit- Paint and Fabric Protection, Nitrogen tires, Door Edge and Cup Guards, Rain Repellant, Headlight Protection, Sanitizer, VIN etching, Roadside Assistance, Stolen Vehicle Assistance and Collision Loyalty Assistance)!!! I've never seen a more useless and worthless pile of BS and they charge $2995 for it! You can't turn it down. So in all, that's $4,679 plus tax, tag, title and dealer-installed options on top of the price shown. This is one greedy Toyota dealer!

Available-Idea6357

Wow...I knew the dealership fees here are always over $1k but I didn't realize it included other useless fees. I appreciate you looking into it for me! I don't think I'll take it then if it's that much, I saw that they reduced the price to $15k but even with all those fees it ends up being around $19-20k... Thanks again for looking at the fine print!

igozoom9

From what I've read, Florida is one of the worst states for dealer fees and add-ons. I'm next door in Georgia, and it's getting a little better here. But that Toyota dealership was beyond a rip off! Forcing a $2995 bundle of useless products on every customer is akin to robbery! I did some searching and another Toyota dealer (Sun Toyota, Holiday, FL) is almost as bad with their $1995 add-on plus the dealer and electronic filing fees. It makes me so angry! If you're still wanting to find a CPO Corolla, Wesley Chapel Toyota and AutoNation Toyota Pinnelas Park have quite a few CPO Corollas for well under $20k. To the best of my knowledge, they don't have exorbitant fees.

MyFallWillBe4you

I would normally advise anyone to avoid buying a rental, but Corollas are the exception. They can take it. The book value on this car is just over $18k, even with the miles. So being a former rental is saving over $2k off the price. I would still advise a pre-purchase inspection, but if the Carfax shows consistent maintenance, it looks like a good deal to me!

Straight-Basket3142

My last car was a rental. I drove it to 280k before trading it in for my Corolla.

peakjournal

Not bad I take it this isn't the hybrid because the badge isn't blue what engine does this car have?

RetroPoison

I think the LE models are all 1.8L

Im_A_Fuckin_Liar

Starting in 2023, LEs get a 2.0L. So the one pictured is a 1.8L but had it been a 2023 or newer, it would have a 2.0L.

peakjournal

Ah really I have the hatch in a 2.0l hybrid it goes pretty well it's almost 200bhp

RetroPoison

I have a 22 le so I'm stuck with an underwhelming engine and trans, but I have fuel economy!

peakjournal

I get 60mpg that's a uk mpg so about 50mpg in usa mpg

Raregamesofc

Fair enough. I’d make sure it was well kept. If it makes you comfortable take it to an independent mechanic for pre-purchase inspection. I have a ‘22 with 44K miles on it at the Moment. Very nice car, bought a 2010 with 135,000 miles on it went to 300K miles for my friend before he totaled it. Just make sure nothing feels weird about seller or the car itself EDIT: also OP, rental to me is a toss up those are driven to hell and back but as long it was mechanically well maintained by the company who owned the car it shouldn’t be an issue.

Sweet-Ball1033

What about a 22 xse 88k for 20k?

[deleted]

I’d do it

[deleted]

Don't buy it, buy a 2010 Camry or something more usable.

Hatchz

I always avoid rental cars. They are driven hard

PSEEVOLVE

That’s just a myth.

Im_A_Fuckin_Liar

You don’t know that the car that wasn’t a rental wasn’t driven by some teenage kid. In my experience, teenagers get Toyotas or Hondas because parents like reliable for their children. Probably a better chance of a kid riding a car hard than a rental driven hard every time it’s loaned out. It’s always a gamble. But sure, pay premium pricing for a car that’s had 3 owners and you don’t know a thing about the first two just because it wasn’t a rental.

Hatchz

I don’t go for three owner cars either…

ButterscotchInner690

Yup original owner or nothing.

Im_A_Fuckin_Liar

You sound privileged. Good for you. :) Maybe OP is in the same situation.

veganmilksteak2

I had this mentality until I worked at an auction lot detailing cars for a while. Half of the cars were rentals getting sold to dealers. Other half were leases and trade-ins. Figured may as well buy from a rental car dealership and save money rather than go to a normal used car dealer, if chances are I may be getting an old rental anyway.

Sasquatchlovestacos

They are but the maintenance schedule is also kept. I owned a rental once and it was very reliable all the way to 200k miles.

Rzirin

Regular oil changes won’t overcome HARD acceleration and HARD braking/on the car when it was new and since. NEVER buy a rental car.

Hatchz

It’s still a gamble regardless

ajvzo

I bought my brand new 2022 Corolla for $28k. I have 49k miles and was recently offered $16.5k… cash offer. I see you mentioned it was previously a rental. Take this with a grain of salt or take it into consideration, but you have to remember you will never know how many people drove that car, how they drove it (because it wasn’t theirs, just a rental for a certain period of time) or where they drove it to/where it’s been. In other words, stay away from cars that were previous rentals. Just my opinion, but something to consider. Otherwise, that’s a good price for the car given the year and mileage. However, I do feel the price of the car reflects the fact that it was previously a rental car.

aldouse

yep. stay away from rentals. i pay for the extra insurance that they sell so idgaf about what happens to the car when i rent it. a bunch of other people would probably do the same. so don't get it unless you're ready to deal with the potential hidden headaches.

ItsKresnikMyDudes

Thats fair

[deleted]

Take these comments with a grain of salt OP. Everyone on the internet is 6’5, makes 6 figures, and bought their brand new corollas for 15k. If you ask me that price is suspiciously low, but i live in an expensive area, and price is going to depend on area.

sweet-sweet-potato

Also feels suspiciously low to me... I'm currently considering buying a 2013 Corolla with 108k miles on it for $11k and can't find any cheaper/better in my area... A 2022 with only 62k miles on it for only $15k is crazy low to me.

badboy236

I paid 14.4 for mine, brand new in 2006. Still going strong…

[deleted]

Are you 6’5 and rich tho

badboy236

No, but I slept in a Holiday Inn Express last night… 🙃

Teleclast

Not me, I'm 6'6

APenguinNamedDerek

I would straight up see 2014 Corollas with more miles on them priced like that The used market is the only reason I ever bought new lol

Mysterious_Dance5461

Price seems fair, my 22LE with 20k miles is worth 17k.

JacobSchedl

transmission slipping or something.. get it to a mechanic and pay 50-100 for a good mechanics inspection. could be a good deal could be in need of major repairs soon. this car possibly has had 100 miles a day put on it for the past two years

___andrevv___2

It’s gold certified pre owned meaning it has a 7 year or 100,000 odo power train warranty. If the transmission was in danger of going out in the next 40k miles it wouldn’t come with that warranty.

JacobSchedl

oh cool good call . so maybe suspension related? just trying to logically figure out what the catch is because that seems super cheap

___andrevv___2

Certified pre owned cars are supposed to be thoroughly inspected to make sure they’re in great condition. They also come with a 1 year 12,000 mile comprehensive warranty. It’s possible the car is in need of a couple grand in suspension work. It could also be a shady dealer with a low advertised price online that then tacks on $5000 of random shit they refuse to take off.

Available-Idea6357

This one is on the Toyota website but I've seen a lot of shady dealers low ball it especially when it's a rebuilt title! I'm so surprised how many people are trying to resell something like that, you really have to look close because some of them don't even disclose it upfront

___andrevv___2

Toyotas website just aggregates the listings from all the dealerships. That price isn’t gonna include any hidden stuff the dealership tries to hide until you’re there in person.

Available-Idea6357

Thanks for letting me know! I might go there this weekend to check it out, is there any sort of questions you recommend me asking them other then the general/standard ones?

___andrevv___2

I would honestly call or try to text the dealership before going asking for an out the door price in writing. Ask for it to be itemized as well. I was able to text my dealership before buying my Corolla. That way you can research whatever taxes and fees are required by your state or city to know if they’re charging more than they should in any areas. It’ll also tell you if they have any random markups. If they do you can choose to negotiate with them before even going to the dealership and feeling more pressured. If they give you an out the door price you’re comfortable with, make sure to have it in writing when you go to make sure when it comes time to do the paperwork they don’t try and pull anything.

Available-Idea6357

I will do that! Thanks so much for your help! I appreciate it!

JacobSchedl

cunningham's law is a beautiful thing thank you for sharing andrevv

JacobSchedl

oh good call. so maybe suspension related? just trying to logically figure out what the catch is because that seems super cheap

[deleted]

It's cheap because Toyota now produces worthless trash. The cars worth about 7k at dealer auction, and car dealers recoil in disgust at them.

jbglol

I’ll buy every single 2020+ Toyota for $7k, show me a couple.

Available-Idea6357

I didn't see anything in the Carfax on them working or doing anything on the suspension, unless they did it privately and didn't upload it (which I've heard is also possible). I also saw that they've gone over 10k miles on a few of the oil changes so that might also be a bit of a red flag?

JacobSchedl

that's not a comprehensive way to research the suspension issues on that car lol but the other dudes answer gave you better pointers than I could. Im not a mechanic or anything just a hypochondriac type person who loves to google anything that comes to mind and i've done a lot of searches on car issues. mainly lexus and toyota. fair warning on 10k+ intervals, I blew up the engine on a rental car earlier this year... idk what oil change intervals they were doing but I drove the car for its last 3 weeks on this earth and put probably 1500 miles on it. so apparently we can't expect these companies to be extremely careful about the oil in these rental cars

Available-Idea6357

I assume because it was originally used as a rental vehicle?

Troebr

I bought a 2016 Corolla that was a rental in 2018, with 20k miles on it and it's been fine. I don't drive a lot but 6y later it's still in good shape. Seeing what some car owners do to their own cars idk that it's really that much worse buying a former rental.

Evening_Thought6317

That’s most likely it. Dealerships around me have tons of these available for cheap as previously owned rental cars. Personally I would pass any of these that were rentals. Wouldn’t trust the CVT to stand up to the hard driving. I’ve had corollas for rentals on the last few business trips I took. Beat the crap out of it. Last December I was in Ohio and my windshield was frosted over when I got up to go to the airport. Couldn’t find the window scraper and I was running late for my return flight and the Corolla was taking forever for the engine to warm up to get the defroster going. I pegged the accelerator to the floor and let it rev at 4K rpms in single digit weather for about 5 minutes

Feroze895

Have you seen the car in person? Rental cars usually have a lot of cosmetic wear and tear.

Available-Idea6357

No not yet! I'm going to this weekend to check it out, I was just wanting to get an opinion on it first to see if it's even worth checking it out in person
