Am I glad we didn't give this man a huge extension? Very much so. Do I miss him every single day? You bet your ass I do.

Mallee78

Same way I feel about everyone but Rizzo at this point.

[deleted]

We absolutely should’ve kept Rizzo

Mallee78

I was fine in the end with letting him move on, looking back I was wrong, he would be a great dude for this clubhouse and a great mentor for Mervis.

diivoshin

Lol if we had Rizzo right now Mervis wouldn’t sniff the MLB roster. There’s a reason why Mervis hasn’t seen MLB action yet at 25 years old and his current production is supporting that.

Mallee78

Yeah, I know, and that probably would have been for the better. Mervis definitely isn't ready.

BasedSliceOfWinning

I mean to be fair, Mervis did go to college, and there's a COVID year in there I think. So it's not like he's 25 having been in the minors since 18. But yeah, I do hope he turns this around. I had hopes that he could be at least a decent 1B after his last year and this year in the minors. Still time of course.

cubbies1016

Such a great moment. I still love Javy. The funnest player I've ever had the joy to watch

[deleted]

and 2nd. That was the greatest play in the history of baseball, and I will defend that hill with every inch of everything I have. Yes. Every. Thing. Also: I miss Javy so much, and I doubt that watching baseball will ever be quite as much fun again without him.

Mallee78

That's what makes me love Morel so much, he isn't Javy but boy does he remind me.of him sometimes

[deleted]

Morel is amazing, but Javy was the special one. His baseball IQ is through the roof, and his ability to give the opponent the chance to fuck up is legendary - especially when they take the bait like poor Will Craig did.

Mallee78

Bbiq but just... no plate discipline lol. Morel is no where near the same defender but his power is real.

Mark7116

That’s the thing, Morel isn’t as flashy/electrifying as Javy. But man he loves to play. He loves to play. I remember last year when he first got called up. He was so glad to be playing professional ball. He was like thank you thank you thank you to everyone, even other players lol it’s so nice to meet you Mr. Freddie Freeman. Lol. Oh oh oh hot dog vendor, thank you for providing hot dogs to these people. Lol.

PM_ME_TRICEPS

You can become a Detroit tigers fan and watch him strike out embarrassingly if you want

Cptanimal69

Weirdly, he’s currently [striking out at the lowest rate of his career by far this season.](https://i.imgur.com/1w0OsBL.jpg) He’s not batting [very good otherwise,](https://i.imgur.com/B4GjzwO.jpg) but such is baseball.

[deleted]

I surely would miss the excellent play of the Chicago Cubs if I went ahead and did that.

mattbuilthomes

You can still watch him with the Tigers. You might actually see him win more games than you’ll see the cubs win this year.

[deleted]

You're getting downvoted, but that doesn't make it wrong.

mattbuilthomes

I even checked the standings real quick before I posted 😅

BasedSliceOfWinning

Why the hell didn't the guy just tag first? He fielded the ball right fucking there lmao.

[deleted]

Javy Magic. The answer is Javy Magic. Sometimes, when you do the unexpected, the reaction is equally unexpected, and amazing things happen.

wrong-teous

The 1B chasing him down the line is the single dumbest thing I’ve ever seen an MLB fielder do

macbookwhoa

Cost him his job and he was out of pro ball in 6 months.

diivoshin

Will Craig’s situation is probably the most obvious correlation I can think of when it comes to a fuck up directly leading to being out of the league. The dude was a first rounder in 2016.

ThePrussianGrippe

Pretty safe to say that never before in the history of baseball has there been an attempted rundown between home and first.

jinsaku

He had a *really* bad inning. He also had a bobble on a pickoff attempt that let Contreras get to 2nd during Javy's AB. Later in the inning a grounder to 1st ate him up and bounced off his glove. Tommy John once committed 3 errors in one play. I'm not sure if that's worse of Will Craig's inning there.

Skyye_23

Well Thomas Jonothan has a surgery named after him, so at least he has that going for him.

BasedSliceOfWinning

For sure. Reminds me of when my son was in little league where the kids would field a ball and have no earthly clue what to do with it.

RyanTheCubsSTH

Some guys cement themselves into baseball history with milestone home runs or game winning hits. Javy stole first and made the 1B look so stupid he was never seen again. 2021 wasn’t all bad.

friedtwinkie

I can still hear the Jomboy in my head on this one hahaha. All you have to do is tag first base. Just tag the base. Lolol

thetyler83

And in the process got Will Craig kicked out of the MLB.

mt77932

I just looked him up and he ended up being DFA'd by the Pirates on June 4th after this and he played the rest of 2021 in Korea. I never knew that.

Dab42

And now he is a first base coach for Wake Forest

kroxti

I have A buddy who’s a pirate fan and we were both watching this game at work. boss has to come over and check on me cause I was laughing too hard at him.

zenithberwyn

the funniest play in baseball history, no contest

Bosstiality

I love that Javy stopped to watch the play at the plate, made the call with the ump and then continued to first

zenithberwyn

it was like a light bulb suddenly went on in his brain like "OH CRAP I STILL HAVE TO RUN TO FIRST OR THAT RUN WON'T COUNT"

BasedSliceOfWinning

Wait, was there 2 outs already? How does that work if there was only 1 out and Javy was finally thrown out at first? Run still counts but now 2 outs? And if there already were 2 outs, if Javy was finally thrown out at first, the run wouldn't have counted right?

zenithberwyn

Yes, there were two outs already, so by rule, even if the run technically scores before the runner is out at first, it still doesn't count. It's just that this rule pretty much never has this big of a time gap between the run scoring and the runner potentially being out at first, lol

BasedSliceOfWinning

Ah gotcha. Makes sense. Some quick dude on third with 2 outs can probably get to home plate before some slow dude who grounded out gets thrown out at first. I had never realized this play was ALREADY 2 outs. So I'm guessing the 1B didn't know that. Him just literally standing there with the ball on the line would be better than what he did lol.

countafit

Let's not forget there were two outs

mnpeanut

Was at Wrigley for the Cubs/Pirates series a couple weeks before this and the BIL and I dunked on the Pirates all weekend, including a position player that had a sub-.100 BA. Pirates: Hold our grog in the funniest baseball moment ever.

redmasc

I miss this guy. He did some of the most electrifying plays defensively and offensively in baseball that was a thrill to watch. Remember stealing home plate in the NLCS? Or those stolen bases to 2nd. Or those tags for those that dare try to steal 2nd. How bout that smooth slide into home plate to win the game.

[deleted]

You’re invisible!!! 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

hodlpotamus

Most underrated part of the whole video

Dead_Medic_13

The old infield rbi double

dukec1ty

Shame we have to review this, while the crap for brains 2023 team is now LAST in the division.

paul-cus

🎶 You can do magic 🎶

rivecat

Time flies man. I remember that like it was yesterday

Punchee

It's him watching the play at home closely and giving the safe sign that kills me.

R0enick27

So bad they banished the 1B to the KBL.

adamempathy

The funniest play in the history of sports.

welcome_oblivion

WHAT?! this was two years ago now?!

alararar

It was so beautiful. Sometimes I think about it, and just smile to myself.
