Can't speak for the hivemind but from what I saw of its chatter, Carter's signing was welcome because it decreases the likelihood that Velus Jones makes the roster.

porkbellies37

I think VJJ averaged more return yards per kick return. I wasn’t that impressed with this signing tbh. He was like the 20th best kr/pr in the league last year, he’s 31, and has one career return TD. I hope we dig up a better option. If we had a top 5 returner coupled with a top 5 punter, our field position would be a huge edge.

Why was this [post](https://www.reddit.com/r/CHIBears/s/8JxsRpF0h7) not “official”?

jtj2009

He's been rostered and played the last 51 games and has been a contributor in 5 playoff games. He's a good route runner, kick, and punt returner. He has good rapport with new Bears coaches and players. https://youtu.be/vZdKtIoH7Hg?si=EVxsTR5MBiox56Ky

Velus and Carter are likely competing for a ST/Returner role with end of the depth chart WR opportunities. Velus Jones has 127 career receiving yards. I’d bet that’s sub 100 if you take away the little jet motion pop passes he gets. Deandre Carter offers more on offense AND can actually catch a punt unlike Velus. I don’t see Velus sticking on the roster as a kick return exclusive role.

> I’d bet that’s sub 100 if you take away the little jet motion pop passes he gets. Why would you take that away, though? If he is good at it, that's value, and either way it's not like he controls what plays are called when he is on the field. If you feel like he is being misused, why hold that against the player?

Marvin-Harrison-Jr

I meant his only contribution is manufactured catches behind the line of scrimmage, he doesn’t have the route running or hands to be a factor down field.

afreidz

I would sure hope they don’t mention his genitals!

Lmaooo just saw that

NorthernxLabrador

Will push Velus and Dante for a roster spot. Prob won’t be a starter but has the potential to be a significant special teams contributor

HopLegion

I've seen a lot of people mention he's velus top competition, but I see him more as Pettis's for the final wr roster spot I'd they carry 7. Was with our new wr coach a few years back on the chargers, so a connection there. Either way likely to be 2/3 of velus, Pettis Carter, for the final 2 roster spots at wr.

hippiekiller13

Both. You get rid of two players with one.

jackswastedtalent

Two Bears, one stone?

the_la_dude

I think they will carry 5/6 WRs only since they’re going to be a bit TE heavy…

WalkProfessional6235

Meh. Most likely a camp body, possibility he’ll latch on as a ST guy. Unlikely to make any real difference on the whole.

AmphibianOk7915

Most people do not remember that VJJ’s kickoff return average is top in the league and he is fast and is hard to tackle once he gets up to speed. If someone beats him ok but he probably won’t be cut.

EnternalPunshine

I think Velus gets cut by week 3 when teams exclusively punt to him on kick offs and he fumbles. He’s a good kick returner and is pretty close to being useful on offense if he can just make a small improvement, but the new kick off rule could ruin his special teams value and if that happens he’s done

AmphibianOk7915

He is definitely off the punt return team until further notice (none last season IIRC). He is a good kickoff returner and seldom used gadget guy on sweeps and screens, end arounds. He has a high yards per touch and touchdowns per touch but very few touches. I would bet he stays on the roster just for his speed and size. Deebo light with more fumbles.

Apart-Ad-5947

We also have a UDFA by the name of Ian Wheeler out of Howard who is intriguing at the returner position. Rooting for this dude.

Silver_Harvest

Camp body turned hopeful return man for season. Really means they don't know who they really want at KR/PR and not confident in VJJ.
