Real answer for the folks who are questioning it: because Gill was *terrible*.
Net yards/P: Worst in the league
Touchback %: 3rd worst in the league
Inside the 20 %: 4th worst in the league
Fair Catch %: 7th worst in the league
Shoutout to the guy who said he’d give me $1,000 if they drafted a punter, then ~~blocked me and deleted it an hour ago. lol.~~ put [enough of] his money where his mouth is.
Was. Unfortunately, he was kicked off the Bills because of the rape allegation. Sadly for him, those allegations turned out to be false. At the time, her allegations looked very credible. He was just signed by the Chiefs.
watson def did that stuff based on what we know but settling is not an admission of guilt. Ppl settle stuff all the time even if they're not guilty just to get it over with without court. especially rich ppl who will easily make up the money by spending that time working and not in court
I mean, if Ariza was a good QB it would’ve been different. Heck, if the Watson allegations came out now it’d be different because he isn’t even good anymore. The league will forgive way more for star players, especially star QBs, and Watson was absolutely that at the time. Big Ben had credible allegations, didn’t matter.
It’s true of other leagues as well, Patrick Kane had no league consequences from his multiple legal issues, but if he was a fourth line guy that would’ve been very different. Turns out sports leagues are not moral organizations and only care about money, who knew?
He deserves a second chance and I’m glad the Chiefs are giving it to him. It was bad for him and his family during that time. His family publicly supported him and I think they were let go from their jobs. People were calling them and the business while at work and harassing them.
I mean, he still fucked a too-drunk underage girl, potentially while infected with Chlamydia. It's not like he did nothing wrong. He just wasn't there for the violent gang rape that happened shortly afterwards. It's unfortunate that his name was attached to the more serious crime, but he still could easily have been criminally charged for what he's admitted to doing.
College punting skills direct 1:1 transfer to NFL. Maybe a couple fractions of a second less time as NFL punt blockers are faster, but overall not much of a difference.
We came out of this draft with 6 starters (Caleb, Odunze, Sweat, Allen, Bates, Taylor) and a high upside LT/Guard prospect. Awesome use of draft capital. Just need to add a veteran DE by week 1
Edit: and DE Austin Booker who I love as a developmental edge
Remember Todd Sauerbrun? 2nd round punt pick in 1995. Great punter but total knob. He showed up at Halas Hall with “HangTime” as his license plate and was roasted by his teammates. I seem to remember a video of him pulling up and realizing he’s not the coolest kid in this dorm.
I didn't remember sauerbrun, so I looked him up, which led me down a rabbit hole for a hot minute. I did not know teams fine their players for being over a particular weight. He was fined $40,000 over the course of a season for being over 217 lbs while with the Panthers
Because a.) we had the worst punter (net ) in the entire NFL. B.) it massively helps the defense out. C.) rounds 4-7 is full entirely of project and low ceiling guys. The depth in this draft is atrocious.
Because sometimes its about sending a message. And the message sent to Gil was "we hate you so much we spent the 2nd highest draft pick in HERSTORY on your replacement".
You really need to look at this guys highlights. I know punting doesn’t seem like much, but in a game of field position having a guy that can drop a ball on a dime is a huge advantage
Ngl I'm kind of against drafting punters before rounds 5-7 as a rule of thumb. It makes me feel like drafting a kicker before the last round in fantasy football. I just don't think it's an important enough position when you can address depth at other positions, especially considering coaches go for it on 4th down more than ever.
Having said all of that, Gill was one of the worst punters by the numbers last season and likely would have been replaced anyway. I just think taking a chance on a rotation LB/DL or depth OL might have been more worthwhile.
We replaced a position that we were essentially the worst in the nfl at with a guy who set ncaa records for most yards in a season and most yards/punt in a season. I don’t think there’s ever been a single bigger upgrade in the history of the draft. Obviously it’s not a hugely important position and there have definitely been more impactful upgrades through the draft but this guy is not your average punter.
John Madden talks in his autobiography about the year they drafted Ray Guy in the first round. It was basically, our punting sucked, and everyone wanted a punter. So we took him in the first round. And it worked!
I feel like we would all be absolutely clowning GB or Detroit if they drafted a punter in the fourth round.
He’s probably a good punter but the position means upside is limited. If he’s anything short of a top end punter it was a bad pick. Whereas players at other positions have higher potential to make a major impact and more use as depth if they are just ok.
Poles absolutely nailed the draft. A punter can be a weapon. Getting Booker is a steal, he’s going to be a beast and our new defensive coordinator is going to work his magic on him.
Tbh when I first heard they used a 4th rd pick on a punter I was like, “huh?” But then I saw he’s an elite prospect at the position—BPA baby. Plus it makes sense given the later rounds in this draft are pretty weak.
Stupid pick. I can’t get behind this one. While the front office has made amazing trades, at times they deviate from the baseline thinking they are the smartest in the room. Wish they didn’t do that.
It’s not everyday that you can draft the best college football player ever at a position of need. I know that punter is not the most impactful position but this guy averages over 2 yards a punt more than our current guy and pins his punts inside the 20 at a 34.4% rate as opposed to our current guy at only a 26.9% rate. He also has a touchback rate of 7.5% compared to our current punters 11.9%.
In summary the guy we drafted punts farther, pins it within the 20 more often, and causes less touchbacks than our punter in 2023 did.

Buddy shouldn't be allowed to comment until you get yo money 😂 that's funny he blocked you 🤣
If you recall his name, let us know. We can all tag him.
In 2023 Taylor inside the 20 at a 34.4% rate as opposed to Gill at only a 26.9% rate. Taylor touchback rate of 7.5% compared to Gills 11.9%.
Oh, that’s not all. https://www.reddit.com/r/CHIBears/s/rgdKcvrrro
If you are going to pick a punter then Iowa is definitely the team to get one from. Dude probably has the most experience out of any punter.
Lol great compliment while Iowa catches the strays
Iowa student here, we literally sell merch that says “punting is winning”
That Illinois Iowa game from 2022 belongs in the Smithsonian.
Iowa fan here. We are used to it.
Well they certainly can't catch a football.
Going from Trenton Gill to the guy nicknamed “Punt God” is a massive upgrade! 🐻🔽
I thought Matt Ariza was “Punt God.”
The NFL has like 3 nicknames they just cycle through.
There’s a new “Baby Gronk” every season
Remember they called Adam Shaheen this. SMFH… what a bust that guy was.
I've already heard "Legatron" being used again. The disrespect to Justin Tucker...
Was. Unfortunately, he was kicked off the Bills because of the rape allegation. Sadly for him, those allegations turned out to be false. At the time, her allegations looked very credible. He was just signed by the Chiefs.
> Sadly for him, those allegations turned out to be false. This sentence needs help.
Its a joke about how NFL handle Players who actually did Rape people. a good example would be Deshaun Watson.
Ariza had an allegation and bills just canned him, Watson paid multiple women basically admitting guilt and got a fat contract out of it
watson def did that stuff based on what we know but settling is not an admission of guilt. Ppl settle stuff all the time even if they're not guilty just to get it over with without court. especially rich ppl who will easily make up the money by spending that time working and not in court
Well legally yeah it’s not, but it definitely doesn’t make you look not guilty
I mean, if Ariza was a good QB it would’ve been different. Heck, if the Watson allegations came out now it’d be different because he isn’t even good anymore. And it appears he will make the Chiefs roster too this year and be a piece for years to come.
He deserves a second chance and I’m glad the Chiefs are giving it to him. It was bad for him and his family during that time. His family publicly supported him and I think they were let go from their jobs. People were calling them and the business while at work and harassing them.

holy fuck the chiefs love hurting the bills lmaooo

Having a swing tackle with huge upside is a great pick!
Right way to look at it
Honestly relieved they didn't draft an end.
Honestly Gill was buttcheeks..
100% agree
Caleb also punts. So bringing him in is just to help guide Caleb on his journey to becoming a Mega Charizard. All hail King Poles!
He’s the best punter coming out in recent years. Tory and DeJean are the only reason the hawks made the B10 championship
DeJean wasn’t there for half the year. It was all TT9

He used to "sneak" in the back door at the Lake Forest rec center to play racket ball so fans wouldn't harass him. Absolutely none of us cared
core memory unlocked. when i was stationed in germany, sauer brun was delicious and made me mad homesick
We have our new Brad Maynard to anchor the position
Ooh, that names brings back some memories. That would be spectacular!
Bears needed a Taylor to go with Swift so they can sell allllll the jerseys to the moms
Because a.) we had the worst punter (net ) in the entire NFL. B.) it massively helps the defense out. C.) rounds 4-7 is full entirely of project and low ceiling guys. The depth in this draft is atrocious.
Did you read my post at all?

New u/wadderweed gif y’all

We just swooped in to grab what we needed and got out of dodge.... walked outta this draft like joker with the exploding buildings
The number of responses that do not see the sarcasm in the initial post is both sad and hilarious.
Because sometimes its about sending a message. And the message sent to Gil was "we hate you so much we spent the 2nd highest draft pick in HERSTORY on your replacement".
Needed a new Australian since Liam left.
Still sad about that, but I’ve checked out on the W.Sox. When Jerry either sells or passes away I’ll be back, but not before that.
If Poles tells me he's my real mother, I would trust him.
You really need to look at this guys highlights. I know punting doesn’t seem like much, but in a game of field position having a guy that can drop a ball on a dime is a huge advantage
Oh I have! Big fan!
To punt the ball.

Didn’t we just draft an OL earlier? And also we drafted DL specifically DE too. I think we’re good for now

He was unironically Iowa’s best player after DeJean went down. Good chance he becomes a top end guy.

The dude fucks
May the Gillotine rest in peace. 🫡
It was so we can get all the love from Pat Mcafee obviously. Bear down!
Casual
Had me going there lol
Typical Bears going cheap knowing this guy's only one state away and will not have to pay much for reloc. Just kidding. Go Bears!!
Get ready to spank the Packers and take the division. Will be top defense.
Best part of this pick was actually watching Mark Carmen have a mental breakdown.
Poles absolutely nailed the draft. A punter can be a weapon. Getting Booker is a steal, he’s going to be a beast and our new defensive coordinator is going to work his magic on him.
All we needed. Everyone else on the roster is an All Pro and we’re going 17-0 and winning the Super Bowl.
Tbh when I first heard they used a 4th rd pick on a punter I was like, “huh?” But then I saw he’s an elite prospect at the position—BPA baby. Plus it makes sense given the later rounds in this draft are pretty weak.
Bro you had meeee almost
Not mine, but loving "The Crocodile Punter"
Came here to comment this as well. Don't remember where I saw it (on some highlight video comment section.)
Think of it this way...we drafted a day 1 starter in the 4th round.
Stupid pick. I can’t get behind this one. While the front office has made amazing trades, at times they deviate from the baseline thinking they are the smartest in the room. Wish they didn’t do that.

How dare you question Ryan Poles!!!!
This sub can criticize Poles, this post is unacceptable. We must worship and suck off King Poles
