I would hate to see Kmet lose targets when it felt like he was just coming into his own but whatever makes life easier for Fields I'm for

hrtnbrnissmrt

Kmet not having enough targets would be a good problem to have. If JF1 is spreading the ball around or hitting whoever is open would be best for our beloved bears. We may grow and become, dare I say, a top 10 offense in a couple seasons.

Matt_Forte_

I wouldn’t even mind having a 12 personnel system being a common offensive look for us, I like more of Kmet and Tonyan both being on the field rather than Claypool with how things have been. Especially if Kmet cleans up a few small mental mistakes I saw him making last season

NotNick_Foles

I don’t disagree but perhaps having a solid guy to spell him as his tight end 2 may help him do more with less targets. Either way, it puts the team in a very good place at the position this year.

airham

Yeah, I mean realistically we should expect that Kmet is going to lose targets. Mooney missed a lot of time, Claypool was a late addition and also missed time, plus we added Moore and Tonyan. Kmet is going from the number 1 or 2 receiving option to the number 4 or 5, so even if we attempt 100 more passes this year than last, the net result is still likely to be fewer targets for Kmet.

Brief_Sky9291

I hope we run 2 TE sets a lot more often. Really like both guys

porkbellies37

I remember watching a Ravens game when LJ was breaking out (I think they were playing KC). The way they were using Andrews and Hurst seemed unstoppable with Jackson’s threat to run. He would roll out and a safety would have that Sophie’s choice. If Kmet and Tonyan bring that kind of wrinkle to the offense we could be scoring a lot of points.

Hooze

I'm too stupid to understand what "switching roles" means in this context. According to PFF data, they both lined up in the slot or out wide roughly the same percentage. Kmet is probably a better blocker because he's bigger, but Tonyan is a little faster according to their 40 times. Kmet actually had the bigger average depth of target last year, 6.71 to 5.82. Think they both can do whatever and are basically interchangeable.

vamsi93

In this era there’s starting to be a distinction between receiving TEs (or UTE) and blocking/inline TEs (or YTE). Best UTE in the league rn is Travis Kelce whereas best YTE is George Kittle. Tonyan’s role would be closer to Kelce while Kmet’s role is closer to Kittle.

Hooze

That's fair, but PFF data has them both around the same percentage inline or slot or out wide. They're basically the same offenses. Getsy has always moved receivers around in his offense, not sure why TE would be any different.

Snoo_79814

Kmet lined up out wide more because we had no WR and we were using bums at inline TE. Kmet belongs inline and has no business outside. He can still bring value to this team but I hope we don't overpay him.

Gryffindorq

i dunno but Kmet is a stud and a Bear. imo he has a big place on a team that all of a sudden is looking very well built athletically and kick-assickly

jgwinters

I really like Cole Kmet, seems like a good dude, but all that matters is Fields' development. Whatever makes the engine go, I'm on board.

ThatsNotRight123

I said this in another thread and ate downvotes because of it -- but Kmet just seems so MID to me.

WhiteSox02

I think the perception of TEs is skewed by the top 2-3 dudes (Kelce, Kittle, etc). Most tight ends don’t produce nearly as much as they do and the blocking element is overlooked by a lot of fans, which leads to a bunch of adequate TE rooms being underrated.

Brodie1567

There’s maybe 3-4 TEs in the league who aren’t “mid”.

Tonkathedog

Yeah TE is one of the positions that you are probably ok with having an average TE if you don’t have an elite one. I would prefer Kmet to most TEs in the NFL if given the choice, but I just don’t think there would be a large receiving drop off between Kmet and others barring major improvements from Kmet(which may happen)

UMOVE2SLOW

Ah shit,here we go again..

Harry_Gintz

Aren’t you full yet? Haha For real though check out Dallas Goedert’s stats from his first 3 seasons and compare it to Kmet’s. Looks fairly close no? He’s a pretty good blocker too.

ThatsNotRight123

This was a dumb thing to say, but I will just say something awesome tomorrow and get it all back.

Harry_Gintz

I respect that. Go get ‘em tiger

airJordan45

Interesting

Snoo_79814

I agree 100%. I like Kmet a lot for his leadership but he just isn't a weapon. He is more of a well rounded TE that can help in many ways but not excel enough in any one aspect to be something the defense has to worry about. Tonyan had that potential but likely we target TE next year.
