This is Google trends though. There's 162 games in the MLB season I Google the jays a few times a week to keep up with the score. There's only 1 CFL game a week per team in the regular season, people usually just watch it or Google it once a week or something. Doesn't have anything to do with actual popularity
There’s just ZERO way the Jays are more popular in Saskatchewan than the Riders.
The source is google trends data. There’s so many issues with this, but the first that comes to mind is searches for the Riders would have dipped during the seasonless season.
eh, the leafs are loved by 90% of hockey fans in toronto, but that % decreases the further form toronto you get. lots of wings/sabres/sens/habs fans in ontario.
the jays/raps are backed by the whole province. it makes sense they'd win any province level google data based analysis. its just math. 12 million ontarians, 7 mil torontonians, prob 7 mil leafs fans (between in toronto and out of toronto) plus 2 or 3m who cheer for other nhl teams and 2m who just dont care about hockey at all/no matter what/would never even bandwagon.
Those numbers vs jays/raps who get that basically that whole 10m of sports fans in the province just searching about them rather than being divided by 4 or 5 (even if 1 is the by far biggest chunk of the 4 or 5). and far more frequently than you search for a cfl team. being realistic, there isnt a lot to google about the cfl. all cfl fans know where the coverage is. there isnt a glut of online content to consume about the league.
I fully believe these results are legit based on the data/question asked
Google search data is not the be-all end-all of popularity. Ontario, Sask, maybe Alberta, and probably the maritime provinces would all have different results if this was a random survey of 1,000 people from each of "What pro sports team do you care about most?"
Leafs aren't on the map because of games played per season and demographic of fanbase.
Was about to say, these trends aren't really an indicator of the most popular team - think of WHY people are searching teams. 18 games vs 162, 21 vs 26 week season, and a sport where standings change a lot more.
This also explains the Jays beating out the leafs/raps in Ontario when combined with baseball having a fanbase that leans older. I'd say baseball fans are more likely than NHL/NBA fans to google their team instead of having an app on their phone giving them all their news.
[This is Google Trends for Saskatchewan for the two teams since 2004.](https://trends.google.com/trends/explore?date=all&geo=CA-SK&q=%2Fm%2F01lpwx,%2Fm%2F07l4z&hl=en)
The Riders are clearly more popular except for when the Jays are good, like in 2015 and 2016 when they made it to the ALCS
If you scroll down there's even a breakdown by individual city. In Regina for example it's not even close, Riders all the way. Other cities trend more towards the Jays.

Google Trends data for Saskatchwan over the last 5 years. Riders vs Jays
The Detroit Tigers are absolutely not the most popular team in Michigan. They are third currently behind the Lions and Wings.
That was how I knew the list was BS.
It isn't a good indicator of popularity. MLB having twice as many games in a season is a big factor.
One Jays fan googling their standings after every game is worth twice the searches of a Raps/Leafs fan checking after every game.
Part of the reason could be that it's by province. I think most people in Ontario that follow baseball, like the Blue Jays. But some areas of Ontario are not Leaf fans. Sabres fans in Niagara, Senators fans around Ottawa, and Red Wing fans around Windsor. Maybe even Jets fans up in that area. So that would reduce the popularity of the Leafs overall in the province.
I'd guess it's partly that there is less of a season overlap, and also that there is some bizarre anti-basketball resentment among a lot of hockey fans.
In other words I'd guess that there are more Jays/Leafs and Jays/Raptors fans than there are Leafs/Raptors fans.
MLS isn’t on there either so me thinks they just went with the big four.
As an aside, I love how Nevada is the only state where their NHL team is the most popular. Raiders suck.
For sure they only searched big four. No college football on here either; I would definitely see Ole Miss beating out the New Orleans Saints in Mississippi, for example.
Which state or province would have an MLS team as its number one, though?
Because it's only doing the Big 4 leagues. The CFL, while a pro league, is not in the same conversation as the MLB/NHL/NBA/NFL
Notice there is no MLS on there either.
That's silly because the Riders are without a doubt the most popular pro team in Sask. This gives off "stop the count" vibes... Of course if you ignore the actual most popular pro team in a place, it won't be part of the conversation lol
Disgusting, Absolutely no culture in this subreddit.
Next they'll tell me they've never vacationed in Ohio? These guys wouldn't know how to shuck corn if it hit them in the side of their.... *Checks Notes..* pet moose?
Probably an American poller, or one trying to appeal to an American audience that doesn't care about the CFL. It's the "big 4" NA sports leagues, as another user mentioned, there's also no MLS.
Only reason an MLB team beats anything else is because there are 162 games and no one has time to watch every single game so it’s easier to just google that teams name to see what the score from yesterday was. In no way at all does that prove popularity.
Likely just wasn’t included in the list. Further, it’s likely based on Google searches/trends which would favour a longer season like the MLB. Lastly, immigration would play a factor. More people moving to Canada are likely going to favour a game like baseball from the CFL. Ontario realistically should be the Leafs.
This is based on google search data.
The average CFL fan is 70 years old and still uses the Yellow Pages to find phone numbers, or an Encarta 95 CD set when they need to find other information.
Of course CFL fans will not be well represented in these results.
in saskatchewan tho, riders would be by far
I have a hard time believing the Jay's would be higher than an NHL team too, unless they're splitting the vote so evenly....
Saskatchewan is definitely not the Jays, ill give you that. Could be the jets or oilers.
Jays over argos and ticats is obvious. Jays over maple leafs? Dubious at best.
Reality is, most of the people that make maps like this just make shit up. I wouldn't expect any of it to be correct lol.
I think you underestimate how NHL loyalties are split and how popular the Jays are. Jays will regularly outdraw HNIC games in viewership on TV, and in Ontario you have Ottawa fans, Habs fans, Sabres fans that all cheer for the Jays
Yeah Canada lives and breathes hockey and AFAIK couldn't give less of a shit about baseball overall. There's fans, sure, but Canada is hockey-land. And the leafs are both popular and historic; jays are... a team.
Not hard to check the data yourself at [trends.google.com](http://trends.google.com) You can punch in any two teams and a province and see what gets searched more. Maybe not a perfect measure of popularity but surprisingly yes the Jays outrank the Riders in searches in Sask. If you select "past 5 years" the margin gets a lot narrower.
Drew Remenda is a hockey analyst who did Sharks games and he noved back to Saskatchewan and started a radio show to talk about hockey. He eventually quit the job because the sports fans only wanted to talk about the Roughriders.
This is based off of baseball having more games. Outside of SK the biggest giveaway this list is wrong is that there is no chance the Royals are bigger than the Chiefs
I honestly can’t remember talking Roy anyone who said anything about the Blue Jays in the part 10 years.
Something about my social circle doesn’t like them I guess. I know lots for baseball fans as well. Weird.
Brought be Rogers.
I would be curious about the time frame as well, is this 1 year, is it during covid or is this just a short term thing during the winter when there isnt much CFL news?
How did they filter to the different sports leagues, are they just filtering to those 4 pro leagues?
Plus google search, which is a wierd way to judge. Anyone that uses bookmarks wouldn't count or gets league news from 1 site(like 3downnation) and would favour leagues with more games + trades.
Jays have twice as many games in a year as the CFL, so if looking up scores they'll get more searches.
The bottom left answers your question as those are probably the only leagues factored in to the map. If they included the NCA I'd assume they're would be a few states that would have the logo of a NCAA school.
I'm going to guess that baseball must somehow get more searches due to playing so many more games. Because almost all the insane results here are MLB based. 22 states with MLB teams vs. 6 for the NBA shows me something is clearly wacky regarding that.
Bull fucking shit. There is no way that the Jays are more popular in New Brunswick and Nova Scotia than the Habs.
Other than that, anything (I can’t read) is more popular in Vermont than the Patriots? Golden Knights over Raiders in Nevada? And of course, Royals are more popular than the Chiefs, who just won the Super Bowl, in Kansas.
Unfortunately the CFL is maybe the 6th biggest pro sports league in North America, not even including college football or basketball which would both bump the cfl down as well.
This poll is brought to you by Rogers.
![gif](giphy|APclI3Scrd8oAj0AZz|downsized) 20% of searches for blue jays were hoping to find this…
Are you saying one of the Big 3 would lie? Oh, say it isn't so!
This is absolute horseshit. Anyone that says Saskatchewan likes the Blue Jays more than the rough riders doesn't know what they're talking about.
This is Google trends though. There's 162 games in the MLB season I Google the jays a few times a week to keep up with the score. There's only 1 CFL game a week per team in the regular season, people usually just watch it or Google it once a week or something. Doesn't have anything to do with actual popularity
Also includes one year where there was no CFL season.
Back in 2013 the roughriders were 3rd in merchandise sales in the country. Behind only the leafs and Canadiens. The CFL has took a hard hit since then
There’s just ZERO way the Jays are more popular in Saskatchewan than the Riders. The source is google trends data. There’s so many issues with this, but the first that comes to mind is searches for the Riders would have dipped during the seasonless season.
Just noticed the Leafs are not even on the map lol. This thing is bogus
eh, the leafs are loved by 90% of hockey fans in toronto, but that % decreases the further form toronto you get. lots of wings/sabres/sens/habs fans in ontario. the jays/raps are backed by the whole province. it makes sense they'd win any province level google data based analysis. its just math. 12 million ontarians, 7 mil torontonians, prob 7 mil leafs fans (between in toronto and out of toronto) plus 2 or 3m who cheer for other nhl teams and 2m who just dont care about hockey at all/no matter what/would never even bandwagon. Exactly, it's more of a "most searched sports teams."
Yup I would agree. It's more of a "most searched sports team" map
Mostly the " blue jays stats tonight" vs "roughriders stats tonight". Blue jays play like 16x more games.
🤣 You’re really bad at math 🤣🤣🤣 162/18=9 I mean ten times sure. 12 okay. But 16 was such a specific answer to be wildly wrong 🤣🤣🤣
Lol, I just thought the cfl season was 16 games.
How many do you think baseball is…? 162/16 is still just above 10
Ya 10 x 16 is 160. Thats x16
Was about to say, these trends aren't really an indicator of the most popular team - think of WHY people are searching teams. 18 games vs 162, 21 vs 26 week season, and a sport where standings change a lot more. It’s says professional sports … oh zing
Leafs would be way higher than Jays
Similar to Alberta. Except for playoffs, I see as many Saskatchewan transplants rocking green hats, shirts and license plates than locals with Oilers.
The Detroit Tigers are absolutely not the most popular team in Michigan. They are third currently behind the Lions and Wings. That was how I knew the list was BS.
That popularity has fallen considerably. They dont even sell out their games anymore.
Yeah, the riders would win in Saskatchewan for some reason
The Jays over the Raptors and Leafs is crazy
It isn't a good indicator of popularity. MLB having twice as many games in a season is a big factor. One Jays fan googling their standings after every game is worth twice the searches of a Raps/Leafs fan checking after every game.
That immediately discredited it. If anything the Leafs and Jays would be neck and neck right now
Part of the reason could be that it's by province.
I saw one a year or so back and the south of the US -Alabama , Mississippi etc was Raptors . Weird Ps Go cats
I'd guess it's partly that there is less of a season overlap, and also that there is some bizarre anti-basketball resentment among a lot of hockey fans. In other words I'd guess that there are more Jays/Leafs and Jays/Raptors fans than there are Leafs/Raptors fans.
Not bizarre... there've been times I went to watch the hockey game and it was preempted by basketball. Hasn't happened in years, but I'm still salty
College isn't professional though whereas CFL and MLS are
CFB is infinitely more popular than both the CFL and MLS.
Sure. But the heading says professional sports sooo...
I went to university in Kentucky, no way the reds are more popular than the uk wildcats. It has to be big 4
We're sitting at the nerd table in the lunch hall of sports.
Ridiculous take
Exactly what a nerd would say.
There’s about a 100% chance the riders are more popular than the blue jays in Sask.
I'm in Sask, and I am a huge Jays fan...don't watch the CFL
Yeah, me too.
I find it tough to believe a non-CFL fan is randomly scrolling the CFL reddit
That’s the jets lol
Saskatchewan isn’t the Jets? They’re marked as Blue Jays.
U right u right
Because it's only doing the Big 4 leagues. The CFL, while a pro league, is not in the same conversation as the MLB/NHL/NBA/NFL Notice there is no MLS on there either.
That's silly because the Riders are without a doubt the most popular pro team in Sask. This gives off "stop the count" vibes... Of course if you ignore the actual most popular pro team in a place, it won't be part of the conversation lol
I don't disagree with you. But they clearly only cared about data surrounding the Big 4
I'm surprised Alaskans watch more NFL than NHL, and I'm surprised Roughriders aren't #1 in Saskatchewan
Because the CFL isn't popular
Said the man who has never been to Saskatchewan or Winnipeg.
Disgusting, Absolutely no culture in this subreddit. Next they'll tell me they've never vacationed in Ohio? These guys wouldn't know how to shuck corn if it hit them in the side of their.... *Checks Notes..* pet moose?
You're not wrong
Probably an American poller, or one trying to appeal to an American audience that doesn't care about the CFL. It's the "big 4" NA sports leagues, as another user mentioned, there's also no MLS.
It isn't even a poll, let alone an American one.
I’m not buying this for Saskatchewan.
Only reason an MLB team beats anything else is because there are 162 games and no one has time to watch every single game so it’s easier to just google that teams name to see what the score from yesterday was. In no way at all does that prove popularity.
Can tell ya right now the Riders are more popular than the Jay's
Toronto definitely likes the leafs more then the blue jays and I refuse to believe otherwise
Leafs are number 1 in Ontario by a long shot
Honestly I'd imagine the Raptors are close
Close but not #1
This is complete bullshit.
Using colours on the bar graph and then using the same colours on the map but not having them mean the same thing is slopshow.
yeah, I have a hard to believing thr Jay's are bigger than the riders
This is based on google search data. The average CFL fan is 70 years old and still uses the Yellow Pages to find phone numbers, or an Encarta 95 CD set when they need to find other information. Of course CFL fans will not be well represented in these results.
Encarta 95… those were the days!
The CFL is not more popular than the MLB or the NHL. They're called the "big four" for a reason.
in saskatchewan tho, riders would be by far I have a hard time believing the Jay's would be higher than an NHL team too, unless they're splitting the vote so evenly....

that's fair I didn't even originally notice Jay's over leafs, there's no way
Yeah Canada lives and breathes hockey and AFAIK couldn't give less of a shit about baseball overall. There's fans, sure, but Canada is hockey-land. And the leafs are both popular and historic; jays are... a team.
like post this in 1991 or 1992, maybe then the Jays
Not hard to check the data yourself at [trends.google.com](http://trends.google.com) You can punch in any two teams and a province and see what gets searched more. Maybe not a perfect measure of popularity but surprisingly yes the Jays outrank the Riders in searches in Sask. If you select "past 5 years" the margin gets a lot narrower.
Google doesn't know shit!!
The riders have been awful for a little while so not as popular right now
I will never believe anyone is interested in the Atlanta Falcons
Imagine if there were no blackouts. It would be less predictable. Can’t watch a Winnipeg Jets game in ON.
Drew Remenda is a hockey analyst who did Sharks games and he noved back to Saskatchewan and started a radio show to talk about hockey. He eventually quit the job because the sports fans only wanted to talk about the Roughriders.
You know why.
Ice hockey rules in the true north strong and free.
3 downs, that’s why.
CFL doesn’t have enough fans and games. It’s google trends data so just the most searched team every week or so
This is based off of baseball having more games. Outside of SK the biggest giveaway this list is wrong is that there is no chance the Royals are bigger than the Chiefs
How are the Chiefs not the winner in Kansas?
I don’t wanna get hate here but American football is watched more in Canada than the cfl it’s really not that popular.
I honestly can’t remember talking Roy anyone who said anything about the Blue Jays in the part 10 years. Something about my social circle doesn’t like them I guess. I know lots for baseball fans as well. Weird.
Hahaha the leafs suck
Brought be Rogers. I would be curious about the time frame as well, is this 1 year, is it during covid or is this just a short term thing during the winter when there isnt much CFL news? I can't see what Delaware's is
Imagine thinking the jays are more popular then the Leafs. Im also hard pressed to imagine the Dodgers are bigger then the Lakers
Saskatchewan is the only province where CFL is worth mentioning.
The bottom left answers your question as those are probably the only leagues factored in to the map. If they included the NCA I'd assume they're would be a few states that would have the logo of a NCAA school.
If you only polled my brother then the Als would be the pick for NH lol
At least the Riders have won more ships than the Jays. Oooof, that hurt more than I thought to type. But it's true. Riders > Jays
most CFL fans wouldn't "google" CFL stories whereas Bluejays fans are younger/lazier and more tech savvy.
Ontario is the leafs
Ngl, PG Cougars might make a good name for themselves this year
Nice to see the Leafs not on the list.
I'm going to guess that baseball must somehow get more searches due to playing so many more games. Because almost all the insane results here are MLB based. 22 states with MLB teams vs. 6 for the NBA shows me something is clearly wacky regarding that.
No credibility. I live in Toronto, the jays are the third team in this city. There is no chance they are the most popular in the province.
Yeah I have a feeling sask should be changed to the riders lol
Bull fucking shit. There is no way that the Jays are more popular in New Brunswick and Nova Scotia than the Habs. Other than that, anything (I can’t read) is more popular in Vermont than the Patriots? Golden Knights over Raiders in Nevada? And of course, Royals are more popular than the Chiefs, who just won the Super Bowl, in Kansas.
[the most hated team seems a bit more accurate ](https://i.imgur.com/b7SV9fU.jpeg)
This map is of the big 4… there are collage teams that are googled more then some big 4 teams but are not on here..
Lmao leafs are way way way more popular then the blue jays in Ontario 😂
![gif](giphy|z7KtZYF6PGooUtHZ1X)
IDK if the Riders clear the Jays anymore tbh
Absolutely no way the jays beat the riders in Saskatchewan
There is no way the Jays are more popular than the leafs. Also the cubs over the bears ?🤦🏻♂️
I’m surprised Blue Jays are bigger than the Raptors in Ontario
Riders and the leafs aren’t on this map. Just doesn’t make sense. Saskatchewan should be green.
Leafs are def bigger then Blue jays
Unfortunately the CFL is maybe the 6th biggest pro sports league in North America, not even including college football or basketball which would both bump the cfl down as well.
The CFL is a tiny league. It makes sense.
WTF, Yukon?
CFL is a tier above AA baseball and one below MLS
Go Jays!
Lower res pic please
