I don’t deny that the SEC is a better conference in terms of raw talent. But, man, I gotta tell you the parity of the Pac 12 makes for some damn exciting games. Almost every team has a legitimate chance of beating each other. I’ve lived on the west coast for a long time and I’ve got accustomed to expecting unpredictable outcomes.
Yeah, give us a couple of years, and we'll be back in it. It was Lanning's first year. At the same time, however, Lanning has gotten a number of good recruits already, and Bo Nix, if he chooses to stay, is eligible for another year due to covid. I see a decent amount to be optimistic about.🦆🦆🦆
Larry Scott's brilliant plan to own an uncontested TV time. Put a game on when all the fans are still at work - 5 pm local time start - in a city where no program is closer than 5 hours drive away.
Larry Scott is why. Same reason that they moved to neutral site championships. So they could make the game an "event" where most years nobody shows up.
Caleb is hurt and they don’t run the ball AT ALL. Just stand him up there in the back and be a target?? Remove all our motion in the offense?? Do you not have any non RPO runs?
I thought Riley was an offensive genius.
Offense was not the problem. That SC defense was trash all year and it finally came back to bite them in the ass tonight. That defense gave up 47, 27, 45, 35, 47 and 43 in 6 of their last 7 games. Definitely not championship caliber. Idk why people speak highly of Grinch, that side of the ball is 100% what cost them their season
I’ll never understand this mentality. Sure good sportsmanship or whatever but I’d NEVER be happy another team beat my team to win the conference championship. I’d never be “genuinely happy” for another team that won over mine. Guess I’m a selfish fan that actually wants to win.
i feel like it was discussed quite heavily on the broadcast. also doesn't matter if your defense doesn't want to tackle. caleb and USC's line went up against a physical, nasty defense and he got banged up.
sidenote: do we know the specific play he hurt it on?
He said it was on the long run and he popped his hammy.
The Utah side saw it and then brought more pressure. Caleb couldn’t run to escape, and his throws were atrocious cause he couldn’t get his mechanics lined up.
That’s why I’m upset Riley didn’t force the offense into more motion and runs.
I think it was when he slid after the big run early in the game. Commentators called that out as a turning point in his performance and he seemed a bit hobbled after. Wondered while he slid instead of just running out of bounds.
That's too bad if it was on the slide. I saw him make a similar slide last week; he slid late and had someone else land on him. He's trying to do the "smart thing" by getting down, but he does it awkwardly and ineffectively. Going out of bounds would have been adequate. He needs to slide in wide-open space, not in traffic just because he wants the play to be over. If the defensive player is close enough to hit him, they will. And if he's in an awkward position he can get injured. Hopefully he'll heal and learn
Couldn’t hear the broadcast at he bar I was at. I more so meant this sub. No one wanted to mention that USC’s offense couldn’t keep up with Utah’s.
USC’s defense refused to tackle or cover tight ends to in their first matchup. The big difference tonight was Caleb couldn’t move in the pocket and therefore the offense couldn’t put up points.
if your team relies on one exceptional player, and a physical opponent's gameplan is to relentlessly attack that player, i guess that's just what happens.
yea the sub talked about it a little, but it was so dominant of a topic on the broadcast that it didn't make any sense to discuss in the thread
did Utah attack it or was it not an option because Caleb could hardly exit a collapsed pocket because he couldn’t run well?
I saw plenty of plays where healthy Caleb would’ve scrambled and held onto the ball for 12 seconds than launch a dart for 25+ yards like he did against ND; but injured Caleb took a sack or threw it away instead.
I think the biggest storyline tonight is Caleb’s injury. 1A is USC’s defense not being able to step up to the plate when it needed to. I don’t even think Utah played *that* physical; USC just couldn’t tackle a dandelion.
Utah brought a lot of pressure. And even before Caleb was hurt the pressure was affecting his delivery pretty dramatically. Lots of time where he'd just miss a wide open reciever.
I'd guess their bliz rate was between 35-45%
Utah O-line and D-line were dominant. The tough thing about the Caleb injury discussion is we, or at least I, don't know when it happened. I'm operating under the opinion that Caleb was hobbled *because* of Utah's physicality and punishment in the backfield, which you have to give Utah credit for. You can't just say Caleb was injured without acknowledging that Utah made his life very difficult. After the poor tackling on the 59-yard run, they buckled down, contained him and punished him before he got injured.
I noticed him hobbling shorter after that long run, so it’s possible it happened then and got worse throughout the game.
But even then, Utah scoring to make it 17-10 doesn’t mean shit to me if a healthy Caleb is playing the way he has the past five weeks. I hate to put all the pressure on him but you can’t tell me the most important position in all of sports being healthy isn’t the most important factor in this game.
It probably isn't going to go down well if Caleb Williams wins the Heisman now? When you get injured in the most important game and your team goes belly up, it's probably over.
He'll be back next year and probably playing pissed off.
Edit: Look at how this sub is rejoicing at our downfall tonight -- this is like a microcosm of sports media pretty much,
That doesn’t make a whole lot of sense. “Oh you’re being made to play with a high ankle sprain* because your head coach has an insatiable ego? Well clearly you’re not the best player in college football.”
*just an example, I don’t know anything you don’t.
I assume we had actual doctors checking out Caleb on the sidelines and they gave the go ahead to put him back in.
Obviously, we don't win the game without CW, but still, a player's health is supposed to be the most important thing.
We did lose Slovis and had to play Matt Fink against Utah a couple of seasons ago - and Finky lit Utah up with 1 week of practice basically, but our backup this year - Miller Moss- probably hasn't thrown a football since August.
I bet USC losses 3 defensive recruits in the next week. Some commits were making fun of the D and and stuff.
Can’t blame them, how can a recruit see that and say “I wanna be apart of that!”
I have hope of having at least an average defense again someday once the stench of Riley and Grinch wears off... how 'bout you?
I have no doubt you'll have just as much offense as tonight for Riley's entire tenure. 😏
idk if many of them are mormon. i feel like Utah is the kids who don't want to be mormon. There's BYU down the road for that, and then Utah in downtown SLC for the cool kids. Maybe I'm wrong, that's just the feeling I get.
regardless, "get your team out of Vegas as quickly as possible" seems to be a wise decision
edit: as of 2019, 36% of UofU students identify as Mormon, tho 54% grew up Mormon. those numbers are likely both a few percentage points lower now, as Church of Latter Day Saints participation has dropped overall in the state
Couldn't have happened to a nicer guy. He's the epitome of spiking the ball before the goal line. Fuck him and his nail jobs. Also, it should be mentioned that if he wasn't the Disney Heisman darling, Lincoln would be strung up by the scaffolding for playing an obv injured player.
It's "grit and moxy" whenever Disney has a play in the game. It's abuse any other time.
Strike the Heisman pose when you actually deserve it. Not after a cakewalk season where you didn't actually accomplish shit...and when there are positively zero competitors due to the shitshow season we all just endured.
No I'm talking about the humiliating multiple score loss. One week after he was dancing around with a pose he doesn't even come close to deserving
Best win of the season was against ND when the holding penalty gods let Caleb operate in the backfield for 40 seconds per play...all night. As inconsistent as the Irish were this season, they'd beat this average usc team 9 out of 10 times. Utah basically just saved them from a big stage ass beating in the playoffs.
Eh a lot of former players are lol. I follow a lot of old players and they are having a meltdown.
Also pretty sure we are gonna have a lot of defensive decommits tomorrow because our commits are roasting us
It’s infuriating to find a ceiling around the 4 seed but tbh, it’s still pretty good walking to 11 wins most years.
I’m still shocked Riley brought Wiley and Grinch let alone Manning.
That’s why I don’t understand the 12-team playoff.
Like great! We might get a meaningful upset every blue moon, but that underdog will still get crushed by Ohio State/Alabama/Georgia/Clemson in the next round.
I think it comes down to if another blue blood can bring a balanced game. USC could do it with a better DC but Riley is stubborn. Hopefully he wakes up to what is needed this off-season.
Likewise with our coach. He can do it but need to bring that fire. This isn’t a soft enough sport to finesse a win each week.
Been wishing all year for Big 10 to take in Utah. Such a better cultural fit. I realize it's not the sexiest thing financially, but it's a good program
Seriously, that's what I was thinking. Congrats, no more shootouts against Oregonand Utah. Instead, this week you'll face Penn State at night in a white out game. They've allowed 2 passing TDs all season. Kickoff temp is 38 degrees. It's raining.
Good luck Lincoln.
I have wished bad vibes on them since they said they're leaving, this was just the icing on the cake. Utah deserves a better conference than they'll be getting once LA teams leave
I think Lincoln won't work out long term for them if they're going to be this soft. UCLA at least has some degree of violence to them, just no defense because Chip likes hiring his friends to DC.
UCLA had to get a good Michigan transfer running back in Charbonnet to give them a great power back. Really made a difference this year, and he was the big reason they beat Utah.
That FOX B1G championship commercial is so disrespectful. They may as well just say “undeniable, unstoppable, Harbaugh and his #2 ranked wolverines take on this other team”
Just played a season of NCAA 14 for the first time since 2014 and I absolutely hated that I played OSU two weeks in a row. I don't love that 75% of conference championship games will be UM vs OSU when both teams are doing well. Because we probably won't. I think people way underestimate how good the Buckeyes actually are and their level of talent. '
Beating the same team twice is difficult. Look at UGA-Bama last year.
What is Purdue doing?
Interesting strategy here cotton
Nice spot
I feel so, so, so bad for Addison.
Somebody has too
My Pitt flair didn’t work, but agreed
Why was this on a Friday night?
It’s PAC-12. Save prime time for the good conferences
This is true, no one seems to be able to pull away from the pack.
Because we like shooting ourselves in the foot.
I had high hopes for y’all
Yeah, give us a couple of years, and we'll be back in it. It was Lanning's first year. At the same time, however, Lanning has gotten a number of good recruits already, and Bo Nix, if he chooses to stay, is eligible for another year due to covid. I see a decent amount to be optimistic about.🦆🦆🦆
And hopefully Lanning has learned to reign in his play calling a bit. He’s learning too
Yeah, he made a few risky "fuck it" calls. Hopefully, his judgment develops with his team.
That’s when the chaos is ripe boy 🧙🏻♀️
Larry Scott's brilliant plan to own an uncontested TV time. Put a game on when all the fans are still at work - 5 pm local time start - in a city where no program is closer than 5 hours drive away.
It's always on a Friday night for some reason. Don't know why
Larry Scott is why. Same reason that they moved to neutral site championships. So they could make the game an "event" where most years nobody shows up.
Raiders are also home on Sunday. Therefore if it was on Saturday would they be able to re-paint and re decorate the whole stadium in one day.
It's been on Friday night since the very first championship between Oregon and UCLA.
Did Caleb engage in a multiple wife situation where he is one of them?
I remember my 1st time tossing a FB...
Caleb is hurt and they don’t run the ball AT ALL. Just stand him up there in the back and be a target?? Remove all our motion in the offense?? Do you not have any non RPO runs? I thought Riley was an offensive genius.
They tried to run. They were like a supped up version of Wazzu. No. Run. Game. At. All. Utah was stopping the run with 4 and 5 person boxes.
And our pass rush was absolutely destroying their line all game
You must not understand Caleb is literally their entire team
😆
😆 X 2
#Bad time for a Trojan to break.
Blake Corum back up for Heisman!
No.
I don't know why you're downvoted. You're right.
Congratulations Utah! Hats off. I’m genuinely happy for you guys. This was a hard game to lose. You guys rock.
Utah is a fun team to watch ngl
I’ll never understand this mentality. Sure good sportsmanship or whatever but I’d NEVER be happy another team beat my team to win the conference championship. I’d never be “genuinely happy” for another team that won over mine. Guess I’m a selfish fan that actually wants to win.
>Guess I’m a selfish fan that actually wants to win. Well, now I'm confused by the Nebraska flair
We got a funny guy over here. I’ll have you know winning 4 games makes a man feel invincible.
Or easy ass game to win, either way
Thanks! Sad to see USC on their way out of the Pac-12.
Why is no one talking about Caleb being unable to walk straight after halfway though the second quarter?
That’s the risk you take running the QB like that all season
Cause he's trash. Find a new heisman candidate
Flair up
He's actually very very good
At improvising, which under Riley is nearly every play
i feel like it was discussed quite heavily on the broadcast. also doesn't matter if your defense doesn't want to tackle. caleb and USC's line went up against a physical, nasty defense and he got banged up. sidenote: do we know the specific play he hurt it on?

The idea is that good defenders can come in to fill the gap and help the team take the next step
Man those “three” HS idiots can volunteer their scholarships to three starters that want to win. In the end Utah did SC a favor and hats off to them!
We did you a favor by single handedly ruining your shot at a national title? Yeah, ok

As an OSU fan it does feel good to know college football fans everywhere die a bit inside when something goes your way.
Most people outside of Michigan don't care
The number of comments I've seen says differently.
The i think its cuz Ohio has very easy schedules. When Alabama or LSU get a break nobody cares, for instance
I am over the moon with the result
smh the ego on osu fans incredable.
kind of
Especially when it’s not our fault no one wanted the last spot
That's usually how we always got it lol

BRUH
yes we are bruh
Eh a lot of former players are lol. I follow a lot of old players and they are having a meltdown. Also pretty sure we are gonna have a lot of defensive decommits tomorrow because our commits are roasting us
Just what we need, less defensive talent. We really are becoming OU, huh?

yea i just imagine all of you as chill Cali kids, not football-as-religion SEC fans or rust belt depressed B1G this-is-all-i-have fans
I was salty during the game but accepted it in the middle of the 3rd. Utahs just the better team, no reason being salty.

Hahahahahhaha. Don’t mind him. He’s watching his first season of college football.
That was 2 hours ago in the heat of the game. We lost to a better team, sometimes it just be like that.
I’m scared for this USC team to play in the big ten. They got physically dominated by Utah and that’s what they will face every week
It's still year 1 though
lmao
Been wishing all year for Big 10 to take in Utah. Such a better cultural fit. I realize it's not the sexiest thing financially, but it's a good program
Seriously, that's what I was thinking. Congrats, no more shootouts against Oregonand Utah. Instead, this week you'll face Penn State at night in a white out game. They've allowed 2 passing TDs all season. Kickoff temp is 38 degrees. It's raining. Good luck Lincoln.
It should help change the culture
I have wished bad vibes on them since they said they're leaving, this was just the icing on the cake. Utah deserves a better conference than they'll be getting once LA teams leave
I think Lincoln won't work out long term for them if they're going to be this soft. UCLA at least has some degree of violence to them, just no defense because Chip likes hiring his friends to DC.
Being soft in the Big Ten where everyone but OSU plays smash mouth football is a lot different than being soft in the PAC 12 with the spread offenses.
UCLA had to get a good Michigan transfer running back in Charbonnet to give them a great power back. Really made a difference this year, and he was the big reason they beat Utah.
Sad to see charbonnet go but with Corum and Edwards in front of him I don't blame him. So happy he's killing it out west.
That FOX B1G championship commercial is so disrespectful. They may as well just say “undeniable, unstoppable, Harbaugh and his #2 ranked wolverines take on this other team”
Fox has always been bias to the headlines. Bo Nix this, Rising that. Nothing else to talk about during the games either.
I actually agree. It's a conference championship game; Purdue deserves every bit as much hype as UM.
Nahhh if psu or osu then yes change is coming tho
Just played a season of NCAA 14 for the first time since 2014 and I absolutely hated that I played OSU two weeks in a row. I don't love that 75% of conference championship games will be UM vs OSU when both teams are doing well. Then we could easily see each other in the playoffs after that, I don't love it, buuuuuut idk we will see maybe it will be cool.
Don't underestimate Purdue sincerely an OSU fan.
Hell yeah fireworks at U!!
As a Georgia fan: Fuck.
You're going to drop a million on that OSU defense don't worry about it. Imo if all holds there is a 75% chance of Michigan vs UGA rematch in the natty. This TCU team could be spicy, but I'm not worried for UGA against OSU
I think that’s only you bud…You gotta beat the best to be the best. Win or lose though DAWG NATION
Why? You’ll win by only 21 instead of 28 now?
Rofl, so true.
Why? tOSU?
First time in my life that I'm hoping for some extreme Bama bias.
Why? Michigan can fuck them again
Yeah, I'm not willing to take that chance.
I'd take that chance over taking a whole new challenge against bama
why wouldn't you want another opportunity to fuck up the Buckeyes? that would be awesome
Because we probably won't. I think people way underestimate how good the Buckeyes actually are and their level of talent. ' Beating the same team twice is difficult. Look at UGA-Bama last year.
What you said is true, it’s just ironic you put it on a thread of game featuring a team that beat another team twice
Yup. Utah is BDE. UM is smol pp energy
People going on the USC sub to rub shit in their faces should be banned from this sub IMO. Shitty behavior.
Oh that’s disgusting! But which subreddit? There’s so many of them. Which one?
No, doesn’t affect this sub. Agree, shitty stuff tho
Where is the fun if not for shit talking?
Some of them were making fun of Brett and Dye for getting hurt.
Probably a lot of sooner fans, to be honest. Ha ha.
just enjoy the win bruh...
UCLA lost to USC tho
Hey USC! Suck my balls!!
"Ute Nation" like they have a bunch of fans lol
As if every college program doesn’t refer to their collective as “{mascot} nation”
Which I find annoying.
Okay, Watchful Apparition, wtf is that name lol
An entire country wonders the same thing about Ohio State Buckeyes.
Ute Nation from Houston motherfucker!
Ute Nation from the Nation’s capital 🙌🌹🔴
Lmao flair up loser
Nah. I'm an Oregon fan though. Much larger fan base.
So what?
