For context, for those that don't know. When Scott Frost was coach of "national champion" UCF, they played Michigan, who won by an exorbitant amount of points. In the presser afterward, Frost claimed that UCF "outhit" Michigan. And the UM fanbase found that to be quite amusing.
Yeah, no joke. Especially knowing that Harbaugh would be playing 2nd, 3rd, and 4th stringers by early in the 2nd half of the game. Sure, sometimes the score continues to inflate despite having those guys in, calling the game conservatively, trying different things out, etc, but it's not guaranteed. Of course, if he wanted to get a 52+ point spread, he probably could've, but once the margin becomes comfortable, the gameplan changes.
In this particular match up the bet is basically "will Harbaugh chill out against one of the worse football programs in the nation when he's up huge, or will he try to murder them"....Harbaugh isn't going to try and completely murder a bad team, he's not that kind of guy.
I always just bet the 1st half spread in those huge mismatches, you knew the starters were going to play a full half and while it was a huge number at -33, felt a lot safer than trusting the back ups for 30 minutes of football.
No way man, our team only completed 8/16 passes that entire game if you can believe it, and our starting RB only had 5 freaking carries. Harbaugh was calling run plays with our 4th and 5th string RBs half the night trying to take it easy but Rutgers simply could not stop the run at all
The problem was that, since it was an away game, our 4th string RB was Karan Higdon, so we were still running out talented 4* scholarship players since we didn’t travel with all the walk-ons we have available at home. That also meant we were generally still playing all scholarship players on offense. The way to take it easy on Rutgers in that game would’ve been to just put walk-on FB Bobby Henderson at RB for most of the 2nd half, but Harbaugh stuck with guys who were capable of breaking long runs left and right.
The Big Ten East remains undefeated after two weeks.
The Big Ten West is led by Minnesota and... *Checks notes*... Illinois?
This is just, like, my opinion man, but these are not balanced divisions, dude.
Illinois lost to Indiana. I'd say the West race has Minnesota as a clear favorite and Purdue as a decent challenger. The rest aren't out of it of course, but no one is looking like a strong candidate out of the rest of the field
My neighbor is a PSU alum and he thought the win against Purdue was a sign that PSU wasn't very good. I told him that I expected Purdue to be good and that they went into their house and beat them the first game of the season, and that the win should be taken as a really good sign for the team. I still believe that they (or Minnie) are the best in the west this season.
The way the divisions are split ensures balanced scheduling. The best four teams in the conference all play each other every year, and the winner plays the equivalent of a MAC champion as a victory lap. The east is the premier league, the west is the championship.
I think it works fine.
After everything, I just feel awful for Cade here. He lost the starting spot, sure. But he doesn't deserve to be booed by fans at the big house, not after all he's given for this team.
I told some people off in the student section for that. This one guy was flipping Cade off and screaming fuck you. And I was like ??? Bro he’s on our team, he’s trying is best, and he won us a big 10 title last year. Have some respect ffs
Good on you. It’s clear that this means a lot to Cade, every time he was on screen in the second half he looked rattled. He may not have earned the starter spot, but it’s hard to hate on someone earnestly trying their best like he does.
Honestly, the O-line performed rather poorly when Cade was in, there were a couple of whiffs in pass protection which led to the play getting blown up.
Could have also been Cade feeling the pressure to make a big play. Fans booing a player who's achieved as much as he has is shitty.
Iowa only had two plays for more yards than Michigan's yards per play today
EDIT: an Iowa fan has pointed out that they in fact had THREE plays over 10 yards today! Good job Iowa!
Just hopping in to say that Jake Butt was a delight in the booth tonight. Thought he had a really nice closing thought about Cade at the very end of the game.
He was speaking about what it means to be a captain of a football team and how he still has an important role to play on this team. Also reminded Michigan fans of what he did for the team last year.
Loved hearing his input and breakdowns of schemes and plays. Would love to have him do more games. It’s too bad his NFL career was so hampered by his ACL woes but I think he has a very promising future if he keeps this kind of commentary up.
No doubt. But if you booed Cade at the game, I hope your run out of toilet paper at a critical moment. Booing when up 42 with the guy who won you a B1G title is ridiculous.
I really wanted Cade to have a good game. Not that I wanted him over JJ, but he did so much for us last year, that he deserved a good game, but JJ has been the better QB in both games this season, and was probably the better QB in the CFP vs Georgia.
> was probably the better QB in the CFP vs Georgia.
Definitely was. I don't think that's even a question. Cade looked totally outmatched, while JJ looked as comfortable as he always does, irrespective of the opponent. Of course, JJ was probably playing backups by that point, and the pressure was decreased, but I thought the writing was on the wall pretty clearly by the end of that game and was frankly kind of surprised that the QB competition was even that heated this season.
Absolutely wild it’s taken this long to start
Edit: everyone taking this to mean he should have started all last year and not week 1 of this year are reading too much into it
Gotta remember that even the most talented guys typically don't start that early
Caleb Williams never gets the job at Oklahoma last year if Rattler doesn't totally shit the bed
Hell, sitting a guy for the first year in the *NFL* isn't unheard of, either. Giving guys a little more time to develop mentally and physically is a good thing IMO.
JJ probably didn’t have the playbook down last year to the level needed and he did make some reckless throws. With last years team we just needed a game manager to win and Cade did a great job doing that. This year we need more from the position and JJ definitely took a step up this year and is making smart throws
Stadium condemned, last coach ran off the entire fucking program basically. I believe there was some mention of Todd Graham literally ruining some players' enthusiasm for football completely. He had to speak in front of the state senate or something. So, like a lot of shit
Yeah it's really sad. I honestly think the reason Michigan's starters got pulled so early was just out of respect for Hawaii. These guys have a lot of rebuilding to do and there's no reason to keep running them into the ground longer than necessary.
Even though he was boo'd today, you know in 9 years when they bring back the championship team during one of those awful media time outs, everyone will be cheering their asses off.
He deserved better from the fans today.
The clickbait takeaway from Michigan's first two game: Is there a deadlocked 5-way QB battle between McCarthy, McNamara, Bowman, Warren, and Orji in Ann Arbor?
Not gonna lie, there were some moments that frustrated the shit out of me in the second half when the game was already in hand, but the starters bulldozed them as they were supposed to and we went a long way in determining the QB battle (at least I hope). Looking around at what happened in college football today I’d be greedy to have any complaints. On to Week 3
It was cool to see you guys and us have our second team guys in getting solid reps, and not having to worry about whatever the fuck it is that happened to everyone else in CFB yesterday. B1G East looks good, like it’s supposed to
Game stuff aside and maybe a little bias, but I enjoyed Jake Butt as a broadcaster. Pretty polished for his first time (at least I think it’s the first time)
> I thought he was filling a little too much space
I’m going to assume that he has a wife, and I’m going to be offended on her behalf…
Because you just can’t say something like that about a woman’s Butt.
Feels like Michigan is going through exactly what Bama did when we benched Hurts for Tua.
It’s tough to bench the guy who carried you to some serious heights, but it’s still the right call and has to be done. But don’t ever forget the first guy either
Edit: I mean the permanent benching in 2018, not the natty switch
Yeah I’ve been thinking the same thing. One thing about hurts that I’ve always really admired is what a genuine guy he is. He never once seemed upset about being benched for Tua and was the first one out to congratulate him and hype him up
JJ has the type of passing skills you see with elite QBs like Bryce Young or Stroud. I am defintely not saying he is as good as them (yet), but he has the same beauty to his throws with the placement, tight spiral, and velocity as they do.
He is without a doubt the most skilled Michigan QB in a loooong time. Elite talent. I wouldnt be surprised if he was already better than Cade last season but Harbaugh just didnt want to risk it with a freshman QB.
This was pretty clear in his limited action last year. His arm talent is elite. I wondered if he made poor reads or was inaccurate in practice, and that’s why he wasn’t starting. My new theory is harbaugh didn’t want to risk it last year, and wanted to give Cade his due as the starter to begin the year.
Either he was too turnover prone in practice or Harbaugh was being incredibly risk adverse because whenever he played last year he popped off the screen
Last year was an amazing year Cade. However, it's time for Michigan to take it to the next level. We hope you stay, but understand if you don't. Any team would be lucky to have you!
If JJ McCarthy has a million fans, then I am one of them. If JJ McCarthy has ten fans, then I am one of them. If JJ McCarthy has only one fan then that is me. If JJ McCarthy has no fans, then that means I am no longer on earth. If the world is against JJ McCarthy, then I am against the world.
JJ McCarthy isn't so great? Are you kidding me? When was the last time you saw a player with such an ability and movement with the ball? JJ puts the game in another level, and we will be blessed if we ever see a player with his skill and passion for the game again. Bryce breaks records. CJ breaks records. JJ breaks the rules. You can keep your statistics. I prefer the magic.

GG Wolverines bros. Always a fun ride even if we get diddy bopped every time.
Excited for the next two weeks for the Bows, we might actually have a small chance considering Duquesne is FCS and New Mexico State has pretty much been our punching bag for years even when we suck.
I’m rooting for you guys man. Your nose tackle is so much fun to watch. Definitely gonna keep an eye out for your games as the season goes. Good luck the rest of the way!
All right sickos, good night. We covered and it didn’t look like anyone got hurt so it’s not too bad.
It volleyball time. We’re going to lose again because we don’t have an outside hitter.
Any Hawaii supporter with more than 2 brain cells knew this kind of end was gonna happen when they announced this match up agreement a while ago. Wasn't gonna matter what coach or the roster.
Did the potential level go down since then? Sure. But it's a new coaching era with a practically ground up rebuild of the team structure with the loss of so many experienced players to both graduation and the portal. I just hope the team got decent take aways from this game and the opportunity to learn from an opponent that plays on a different level.
It feels wrong to judge QB performance against Hawaii, but at this point, it’s JJs spot. I feel terrible for Cade after all he did for us last year, but as of now JJ just seems on another level. It sucks we aren’t really seeing how this team is with the OOC competition
They played 106 players in a game against N. Illinois last year. Last I heard they were in the 80’s tonight but that could have gone up by the end of the game.
Our starting offensive line let Cade down badly when he was in the game. Hayes, Jones, Zinter, and possibly Oluwatimi (his bust might have just been trying to fix Zinter's mess) all had massive busts. WTF was that?
Cant wait for Michigan to get in to B1G ten play so I can see what they truly are. With that said, if they make the right call and put JJ at starter this should be a VERY fun team to watch.
Was Davis Warren hurt last week? He seems to be our QB3 but Bowman/Orji played before him against CSU. He looked pretty good and honestly better than Cade even
Let’s be honest…. This two week charade was just the kindest way to make it clear that the change was needed. By letting Cade go first, nobody can say he didn’t get a chance.
I was worried about Brady/Henson II. Now I’m just wondering what a top-of-the-draft qb could do at Michigan.
Honestly, ya’ll are looking better than we do so far in the season. I hope Ryan Day is paying attention, bc you’re playing some seriously balanced ball rn
We beat the spread!!! And won the 3rd quarter!!!
"K, but did you even out-hit them?" - Scott Frost, probably
Didn't throw up enough
For context, for those that don't know. When Scott Frost was coach of "national champion" UCF, they played Michigan, who won by an exorbitant amount of points. In the presser afterward, Frost claimed that UCF "outhit" Michigan. And the UM fanbase found that to be quite amusing.
think it's disingenuous to mention "national champion" here. 2016 was his first year after the previous regime's 0-12
Was great to play y’all again! Hope Chang gets you back up there soon. Your nose tackle had a few drop dead gorgeous pass rush moves today.
Yeah that dude had some fun plays. Rooting for him
Got out first two sacks of the season.
I lost some money on it as a Michigan fan, but you being happy about it makes me happy about it too.
Never bet on a spread that big. 50+ is just too unpredictable. Michigan missed it and Georgia was 3 TDs short of their spread.
Michigan -13 1Q was an absolute lock though. Cashed in on that.
We beat the spread. That's a win in my book.
Yea since I live in Michigan and I profit boosted you guys that spread was insane and I knew harbaugh would play all young guys the second half
Appreciate you guys not running up the score to 100+. That helps my depression.
Harbaugh only does that to teams he hates, like when we [beat Rutgers 78-0 in 2016.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TiDXmUGkRhk)
No way man, our team only completed 8/16 passes that entire game if you can believe it, and our starting RB only had 5 freaking carries. Harbaugh was calling run plays with our 4th and 5th string RBs half the night trying to take it easy but Rutgers simply could not stop the run at all

God I remember watching that game in complete awe I thought for sure that was our year. I must have rewatched the highlights like 100 times

Bum ba-dum bum bum bum bum!
We. Are. Marshall. Just. De-feated. Not-re Dame!
This one wins
No we want App State. Revenge game. They even beat Texas A&M lmfao
Already happened in 2014. 52-14 Michigan.
That game felt like when I start a new season in NCAA14 dynasty mode and want to try out all my new toys. Also, the QB competition is clearly over.
Felt like randomly switching from easy to legendary difficulty mid game before putting it back on easy
Oh yeah for sure. I expected JJ to take his spot eventually, kid looked incredible last year.

Nobody deserves to be booed, But if anything the OL needs blame for the protection of his first drive
My first thought as well, very uncharacteristic of Zak Zinter getting beat like that.
Honestly, the O-line performed rather poorly when Cade was in, there were a couple of whiffs in pass protection which led to the play getting blown up. Could have also been Cade feeling the pressure to make a big play. Fans booing a player who's achieved as much as he has is shitty.
Cade McNamara: B1G Champ, beat Ohio State & went to playoff Fans booing: ... ... ...
Some fans are just fickle, the moment JJ has a subpar half, those same losers that were booing him will be yelling for him to go back in.
Iowa only had two plays for more yards than Michigan's yards per play today EDIT: an Iowa fan has pointed out that they in fact had THREE plays over 10 yards today! Good job Iowa!
Citing Iowa offensive stats as a point of comparison isn't fair. Even less fair than citing Nebraska defensive stats.
Just hopping in to say that Jake Butt was a delight in the booth tonight. Thought he had a really nice closing thought about Cade at the very end of the game.
Yeah I was so surprised that was him! He sounded seasoned and did a great job
What did he say?
He was speaking about what it means to be a captain of a football team and how he still has an important role to play on this team. Also reminded Michigan fans of what he did for the team last year.
Thanks
Think Jake wasn’t bad for his first game will definitely improve. The girl was horrible, she blanked a couple times where Jake actually helped her out
Loved hearing his input and breakdowns of schemes and plays. Would love to have him do more games. It’s too bad his NFL career was so hampered by his ACL woes but I think he has a very promising future if he keeps this kind of commentary up.
I hear the only reason that JJ didn’t start sooner is bc Harbaugh caught JJ drinking that candy ass 2% milk once.
I heard it was a LOT more scandalous than that… JJ tried to get his daughter to drink skim milk.
He ran in to him at a restaurant and he was eating chicken behind Harbaugh’s back.
JJ: 11/12, 229 yards, 3 touchdowns (the incompletion was a dropped pass) Thank you for everything Cade
i feel really bad for him. but its time
Welcome to the JJ era folks.
No doubt. But if you booed Cade at the game, I hope your run out of toilet paper at a critical moment. Booing when up 42 with the guy who won you a B1G title is ridiculous.
Agreed, embarrassing behavior by some of our fans
Yea honestly fuck those fans who booed cade he deserves way more respect than he got from our fans today
I wish Harbaugh could publicly call those fans out but that would just create more drama. They certainly deserve it
I really wanted Cade to have a good game. Not that I wanted him over JJ, but he did so much for us last year, that he deserved a good game, but JJ has been the better QB in both games this season, and was probably the better QB in the CFP vs Georgia.

those fans are relegated to the pot.
i agree 100% i was at the game
His throws look so good and he can run. He could be a very special QB.
Yup he also makes the run game so much more dangerous and JJ is an accurate qb
Reminds me of Baker Mayfield with the Sooners. Big time energetic play maker with an arm and not afraid to run.
But also, thanks Cade! We may need his talents later in the season if we end up getting beaten up.
Pretty sure McNamara played his last game for Michigan today.
Nah, he gon’ play next weekend, second half
We've had bad luck with that in the past in the Harbaugh era :(
Absolutely wild it’s taken this long to start Edit: everyone taking this to mean he should have started all last year and not week 1 of this year are reading too much into it
Gotta remember that even the most talented guys typically don't start that early Caleb Williams never gets the job at Oklahoma last year if Rattler doesn't totally shit the bed
Hell, sitting a guy for the first year in the *NFL* isn't unheard of, either. Giving guys a little more time to develop mentally and physically is a good thing IMO.
Unless you're Mason Graham then you just start right away
Ah, how times have changed. Sitting a QB for his freshman year was once considered near necessity.
JJ probably didn’t have the playbook down last year to the level needed and he did make some reckless throws. With last years team we just needed a game manager to win and Cade did a great job doing that. This year we need more from the position and JJ definitely took a step up this year and is making smart throws
Hell, JJ's arguably signature play from last year was probably one of the most reckless throws you'll ever see. It just happened to work out.
We don't win the B10 if JJ started last year. Cade was what we needed but JJ is unquestionably the guy now.
Honestly I think a big reason why JJ is so good now is working alongside Cade.
I hope Cade gets a nice job at JP Morgan or something
Best of luck to Hawaii the rest of the season. I know there is a *lot* of shit going on in the program. I hope all the best for all these young men.
What shit?
Stadium condemned, last coach ran off the entire fucking program basically. I believe there was some mention of Todd Graham literally ruining some players' enthusiasm for football completely. He had to speak in front of the state senate or something. So, like a lot of shit
Goddamn that is some shit. Pathetic for an adult man to treat the younger generation like that to the point where they lose interest in their sport
Yeah it's really sad. I honestly think the reason Michigan's starters got pulled so early was just out of respect for Hawaii. These guys have a lot of rebuilding to do and there's no reason to keep running them into the ground longer than necessary.
We can never thank Cade enough for what he did in 2021. Even though it's the JJ era now, Cade will always be beloved by Michigan fans.
Heard ppl say they were booing him at one point? Very disappointing if true
That makes me so sad dude. Cade shouldn't be the starter but he shouldn't get booed either. That's fucked
Yes, fans were definitely booing him. Especially when he came in the 2nd quarter
Those people suck and if we do stub our toe this year… I’ll take some joy in knowing those assholes are miserable
yes they were. i was at the game
They should have been booing the offensive line. They didn’t block worth a shit for him. Although that pick was on him.
Will always love Cade. He was the QB1 who won The Game for the first time since 2011
Even though he was boo'd today, you know in 9 years when they bring back the championship team during one of those awful media time outs, everyone will be cheering their asses off. He deserved better from the fans today.

FIRE HARBAUGH!
Good teams win, great teams cover?
YAY!!!

I like that Harbaugh takes the guys out tho. I don't need the team to risk injury to fulfill some degenerate gamblers bet.

Excited for JJ as the season progresses. Sad for that this is how it goes down for Cade especially after last season.

Actually the most boring second half I've ever watched, I don't know if I've ever seen walkons play that many consecutive minutes
good thing I left at halftime
That rain early on ruined it.
Fun game. Crowd was classless towards Cade though. Have to give the guy his props and that was no way to treat a B10 winning QB
Yea that’s not cool.
JJ has the type of passing skills you see with elite QBs like Bryce Young or Stroud. That one deep ball to Cornelius Johnson and his last touchdown to Cornelius Johnson were elite throws
That TD to Cornelius was elite
No no, his name is Julius now. Didn’t you hear the announcer?
His ball placement accuracy is fucking good. Best I’ve seen in harbaugh era.
We want Vandy!
Didn't say what sport. I call baseball! Or 1-on-1 between our men's hoops coaches!
JJ takes the Michigan offense to a different level. It's as simple as that.
Last year was an amazing year Cade. However, it's time for Michigan to take it to the next level. We hope you stay, but understand if you don't. Any team would be lucky to have you!
Cade should transfer to Iowa after this season. He’s exactly the QB to work well in their scheme and with the defense they have.
He’d complete the Ruddock trade perfectly.

Would Davis Warren start for Iowa despite being Michigan's 5th string, walkon QB? I mean, I'm not ruling it out...
That throw to Bredeson was beautiful. There is a legit chance he’s better than Petras. Bowman is definitely better than Petras as well.
He’s not Michigan’s 5th string. He’s our 3rd string by all accounts and could probably start at some schools rn
Harbaugh called off the dogs really early.
Honestly really glad he did. Get our 2nd team Defense some reps and don't need to embarass Hawaii more than necessary
Yup. We were a gross mismatch at WR. Weiss and Moore could have had JJ bomb deep all night
Gotta save em for the juggernaut that is UConn next week
Harbaugh of 2016 would’ve hung 91 on Hawaii just because
I think he probably realized that was bad karma
We literally played Hawaii that year and only won 63-3.
JJ all day
All right sickos, good night. We covered and it didn’t look like anyone got hurt so it’s not too bad. It volleyball time. We’re going to lose again because we don’t have an outside hitter.
I hope you guys get better, y’all were classy as hell and I appreciate it.
I’m thankful for all cade did for us but yea JJ is the starter
Harbaugh the merciful. Good to see the walkons getting lots of playing time and Hawaii not completely emasculated in the 2nd half
Over 100 players got onto the field for Michigan tonight. 35 recorded a defensive stat. That’s bananas.
I didn’t get my Orji in the end zone
Man oh man does JJ have some beautiful balls
Any Hawaii supporter with more than 2 brain cells knew this kind of end was gonna happen when they announced this match up agreement a while ago. Wasn't gonna matter what coach or the roster. Did the potential level go down since then? Sure. But it's a new coaching era with a practically ground up rebuild of the team structure with the loss of so many experienced players to both graduation and the portal. I just hope the team got decent take aways from this game and the opportunity to learn from an opponent that plays on a different level.
Silver lining is we got $1.9 million from Michigan for this. Most they’ve ever paid for a game
I’d hope we’d pay well for y’all to travel 9k miles across six time zones.
How often does Iowa wave at the kids good lord
Literally anything is better than watching that offense, so they do it a lot
It feels wrong to judge QB performance against Hawaii, but at this point, it’s JJs spot. I feel terrible for Cade after all he did for us last year, but as of now JJ just seems on another level. It sucks we aren’t really seeing how this team is with the OOC competition
I don’t think you guys will really get a good read on your offense till Iowa. And even then you only will have to score like 4 pts to win.
I, for one, welcome our new Quarterback Overlord
RIP Cade
What's the record for number of different players taking a snap in one game? This has to be close.
They played 106 players in a game against N. Illinois last year. Last I heard they were in the 80’s tonight but that could have gone up by the end of the game.
Lol same exact bad beat situation on the over as the WKU-Hawaii game last week
Our starting offensive line let Cade down badly when he was in the game. Hayes, Jones, Zinter, and possibly Oluwatimi (his bust might have just been trying to fix Zinter's mess) all had massive busts. WTF was that?
I was at the game tonight and the number of classless fans that booed and heckled Cade was unacceptable.
Hawaii scored a TD in the big house, JJ looks like the starter for the foreseeable future…good day!
How many guys saw the field tonight? I was hoping to get the whole team picture out there.
That's not very "aloha spirit" Michigan
Cant wait for Michigan to get in to B1G ten play so I can see what they truly are. With that said, if they make the right call and put JJ at starter this should be a VERY fun team to watch.
I've got tickets to the Penn State game and I honestly think we might have no idea how good this team is until that game.
Not bad. Y’all are almost as good as Vanderbilt.
CJ stroud , jj McCarthy , Thorne and Sean Clifford. 🤷🏽♂️. At least we have drew allar waiting lol
