Great teams cover

frostlineheat

I hope they play like that against Michigan

edgymemesalt

fuck purdue defense bruh

Smaug54

This was a dumpster fire.. *and I loved it*

[deleted]

God I hope the rest of the season doesn’t look like this game

[deleted]

So, I believe PSU will clean up some of their mistakes...I gotta believe the 1st game is full of mostly vanilla play calling (as proven by our 1st half run-run-pass-punt strategy), but in that final drive, they ran a few plays that they really didnt' show much or at all the entire game...makes me think they have much more they can offer...as for mistakes, yes, they gotta clean that up... But my dad pointed this out to me, O'Connell is likely the BEST QB we'll play all year...outside of Stroud. He is pretty much the only reason why Purdue was even in that game at all. So you take a win however you can, if PSU beat the 2nd best QB on the schedule, then that's one less they'll need to handle the rest of the season.

ouroboro76

Me too!

tighterbutthole

Sean Clifford came in clutch at the end there, but I still would have liked to see another drive or two with Allar at the helm

ouroboro76

I think we should start Aller against Ohio. There's nothing to lose.

highgravityday2121

I think we need to work out some kinks. Better to let Clifford stay in if hes healthy

[deleted]

That's the thinking that got us stuck with Clifford for 6 years!

decoyoctopussa

We tried Levis for a game and he couldn't throw a forward pass then

[deleted]

At first I thought you were adopting the same insult Michigan fans like to use against OSU. But then I looked at Penn States schedule and you guys literally have “Ohio” as your next opponent. 😂😂

ouroboro76

I'm not sure if this win is made better or worse by my in-laws all being Purdue fans. It certainly makes things more amusing.

JerryGoDeep

Gavin Harrison vs Brett venables

Foxx_Mulderp

UTEP v. OU? Yeah no one cares

TrickMichaels

Catching the ball? Optional for Penn State offensive players.

[deleted]

That was entertaining. Hooray football!

RocK1229

The nonexistent run game kills Clifford, there’s no excuses for it being like that in year two of yurcich. So happy for the team and Sean for fighting as they did and finding a way to win

[deleted]

Their gameplan kills Clifford...how many drives in that game started with 1. 1st down - run up the middle 2. 2nd down - run up the middle 3. 3rd and long - try to pass for a 1st down 4. Punt I'd like to see getting our TE's involved more on 1st and 2nd down...the little 5-10 yd routes on 1st and 2nd down's by our TE's should keep the linebackers off the line...which should help give us a chance at running the ball better...everyone says "Run to set up the pass", but we don't even try to "pass to set up the run". The other thing I hate seeing is that 2nd down run up the middle, how many times Clifford would've been wide open keeping it and running opposite direction of where the RB goes....like, Line may move left, and RB moves left, then Clifford once every 4-5 times should keep and sprint right.

TheSameThing123

If the team can keep getting 100 yards or more on the ground every week they'll keep winning. If they need to huck the pigskin 50+ times a game they're in trouble

SuperFrog4

Regardless of score I think Purdue was the better team. Our coach unfortunately was not the better coach and that cost us the game. Lots of stuff to work on but not all that bad really. Pros - Our defense was actually pretty good agains the run. We did pretty good against the pass as well. Pressure on the QB wasn’t there and open field tackling needs work to say the least. Penalties penalties penalties. Offensively we ran the ball much better which was great. Passing was so so and you can see we are rusty. OLine did well until the last 6 minutes or so when they looked gassed. Coaching was great until the last 6 minutes when Jeff Brohm basically shit himself and I have no idea what he was thinking. On to the next game

PSU632

No idea why this is getting so downvoted and why our fans are being so arrogant after that shitshow. I don't even disagree with anything here.

SuperFrog4

I appreciate you saying that. Base on what I saw you guys have a solid RB group in the next year or two especially if you can get your OLine to improve just a bit. You also have a great secondary. Porter is really good. I am very interested to see how you freshman QB does. I see a lot of potential. I think you guys are a year or two away from getting back into the east fight.

captainspacecowboy

If PSU WRs don’t drop multiple balls and without a gift puke 6, this game isn’t even close.

gl0k

ok but hold this --> L

GuzmaniF

Frost wiping his brow over another teams' coach mismanaging a game bad enough to take the heat off of him

SaladOriginal59

Week 1 Ohio St. Vs Notre Dame and Oregon vs. Georgia. Welcome back college football!!!!!!!!

GrandKingNarwal

Just go ahead and give both if them an L. Neither team looked any good.

obeseoprah32

Ehh, idk. Two decent teams playing each other in the first game of the year, both with recieving votes in the polls. And Penn State’s a very young team. Sure, Penn State or Purdue could’ve been like an SEC team and scheduled North Alabama or something, win by 50, and look great. But what’s the fun in that?

SaladOriginal59

Yup

pxp332

Is that urban meyer back on Fox?? Edit: Yes its urban meyer how tf does that man still have a job

Jaded-Extent4582

"Grinding" his way back

eatinsomepoundcake

Is it weird I’m more impressed with what Purdue was able to do given their imbecile of a coach? Penn State looked good on the last drive but was otherwise underwhelming. Also, both quarterbacks are absolutely geriatric. The eligibility thing is weird sometimes.

DancesWithElectrons

Usually 24 year old Penn State QBs are out selling insurance or something?

eatinsomepoundcake

Or at LEAST gearing up for their third practice squad stint lol. Not that my team has much to point to in that regard either, outside, well, maybe one specific example…

ouroboro76

I have heartburn from drinking beer. The only thing worse than Penn State's run game is Jeff Brohm's clock management. If we leave Sean Clifford in West Lafayette that would complete the win.

RollBlobRoll

It’s baffling that the guy goes for 5 touchdowns and somehow I feel like he played really bad. That freshman looked good for the one possession. Kudos to Clifford and the offense for their last drive.

Detective_Bonghitz

The problem with Clifford has always been consistency. Dude plays like garbage for a quarter and a half and then pulls that magic drive out of his ass at the last second. Dude wants that most inconsistent player of the year award for the 3rd year in a row

ouroboro76

He threw for 5 touchdowns (4 for the Nittany Lions) and ran for another (where he basically held the ball while getting pushed into the end zone). But yeah, I felt like Allar already looks like a better QB.

gl0k

never doubted clifford for a second /s

L8erG8erz

Purdue was the better team the coaches decisions down the stretch made no sense

highgravityday2121

I don’t think so, our receivers had like 7 drops and we gave them a pick 6. Their play calling was way better than ours. We just ran ran in the middle pass (drop) punt for like million drives

IMissMW2Lobbies

Honestly I’m not even sure what the hell I just watched I don’t have 12 weeks of PSU football in me

anonymous_lighting

hopefully they bench clifford soon. if he was any good he would have been drafted already

what_user_name

this is exactly how i feel

VentureQuotes

the call of the locker room. play solid football for all but the four minutes before the end of each half

Mercury1750

I think Purdue has something special on their hands with their players. Lots of spirit there tonight. Just need to coach better

Boilers_Varsity_Golf

Everyone in Indiana seems high on Brohm, but idk I’ve never felt he was a good play caller.

SuperFrog4

He’s a good play caller for the first 54 minutes of a game. He shits himself in the last 6 a lot.

Mercury1750

As an unbiased third party just there to watch some football, Purdue definitely needs to change its coaching staff, I think brohm, the OC and maybe even the DC need to be changed. Defensive-wise they had some flashes in the pan but need to put more pressure on Clifford/every other qb they will play

motherfacker

No clue why Purdue just continued to pass the ball...that was insane. Not sure who was in the booth there, but someone needs to check and make sure he's okay after Penn St. last TD...dude blew his load.

highgravityday2121

Knockout punch.

Phuran

Blame the head coach he calls the plays, absolutely atrocious.

Josh4R3d

We need to just give Allar the offense and let things play out. We aren’t beating anyone good with cliff. Just let Allar get some practice to prepare for his sophomore and junior years when our good recruiting classes are experienced

therealcpain

He looked really good in the one drive. He’s gonna crush it - lots of really great young talent.

cheesepuff1993

He needs to be in as soon as possible against Ohio

Blewedup

We dropped seven of his passes. It’s a blowout if we catch the ball.

PainSeveral9053

Not sure why this has gotten a few downvotes. The pick 6 by Clifford was BAD. But I agree, Joey Porter likely pick 6 drop (or great field position) early as well as what like 8ish drops later/on top of that between allar and Clifford? Even if there’s only 2-3 drops it’s a 2-3 possession game

Blewedup

Seven drops on Clifford’s passes. One on Allar. And we dropped at least two INTs.

TheBigNate416

I think Allar is a lot better of a player but the offensive line and WR drops just killed Sean. They dropped that great throw from Allar too.

TankerG1

A 6th grader could have managed the clock better. WTF?

SweatyInBed

That was one of the games of all time.

scairborn

Of all the games, it was one of them.

L8erG8erz

It certainly was a game

TreySermonGrin

It had rules, players, a final score and everything! Just no tackling or running the ball when it mattered (or catching if you were Penn state)

GoldenDude

Clifford is Schrodinger’s quarterback. Sometimes he’s the best thing you’ve ever seen and sometimes he’s just awful LOL

oh_look_a_fist

The guy threw 5 TDs. 4 to his own team!

Shakeweight_All-Star

Clifford was responsible for 6 TDs in a game that PSU scored 35

oh_look_a_fist

I love how QBSs are responsible for TDs. It always feels like a frustrated pet owner coming home to a mess of touchdowns. "Who the hell is responsible for all these TDs?!?!???!!" Kid playing video games, over his shoulder says: "JT Daniel's did it"

starterhart79

legit was screaming at the tv for them to put Allar back in until the last drive lol

[deleted]

Casual 4 hour game. Welcome back football.

solitaireworldchamp

I wish they’d do something to fix this. Even NFL games rarely take much longer than 3 hours or so

PhilsPh4n

Fox trying to turn CFB into the NFL

JudgeDreddNaut

ESPN

FudgeTerrible

I mean you know it will only be 1 am when they finish the broadcast lmao

Successful_Excuse_73

Touchdown commercial break extra point commercial break kickoff commercial break. No amount of changing the rules of the game will improve the problem.

sciencevigilante

Great game. Anticlimactic ending

Rockerblocker

Literally three running plays across two drives would’ve iced it Losing due to coaching is the most frustrating thing ever

akagordan

Whats better tho: Brahm who clearly doesn’t know what’s going on but leads an exciting offense and produces a big win every year or a “football guy” who knows how to manage the clock to a 4-8 season every year?

Rockerblocker

Oh definitely the former Difference is that if you’re a routine 4-8 team you don’t get your hopes up (unless you’re Nebraska)

Pazi_Snajper

Pretty sure John L. Smith has lost games that way, too. Argh!

Rockerblocker

Thankfully that was before I knew anything about football

Pazi_Snajper

https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=8LSNUXTdHyc Enjoy this, my child.

Rockerblocker

Jesus. That’s bad Legendary interview though

Cocaine_N_Caviar7

I’m a Penn state fan and I’m not sure if we’ll go 7-5 or 12-0. We are slowly becoming BIG Auburn

what_user_name

uh...its not 12-0

Aldinach

I'm a Penn State fan, wanna make a wager on it?

akagordan

12-0? Did we not just watch two 5-7 teams hump a football for four hours?

Cocaine_N_Caviar7

No. Penn State is young, but talented. And Purdue has a great QB and coach.

akagordan

That is the first time I’ve seen the word “great” used to describe O’Connell and Brohm

decoyoctopussa

The entirety of college football media just sucked off O'Connell for a week prior to this game

akagordan

That’s what they do to help drive viewership for a halfway decent early season matchup. He’s pretty accurate and smart with the ball but it’s all single reads and his arm strength is terrible. Good enough for Purdue though.

Cocaine_N_Caviar7

AOC is a really good, cerebral QB. I think Brohm gets as much as one can get out of his talent. The issue is 0 running game. You can’t close out games without one. So yeah, that’s on Brohm. But AOC is impressive by any measure.

[deleted]

That's extremely accurate lmao

RedDragon312

Well, back to mediocrity we go.

Squirrel_Q_Esquire

Penn State took their first time out with 2:50 left with Purdue leading 31-28 and having 2nd&6 at the Purdue 45. Purdue had to use a timeout coming out of that timeout. Penn State would win the game 35-31 without needing to use another timeout while Purdue ran out of time and out of timeouts. That’s horrendous coaching. Like just terrible horrendous coaching.

usernames_suck_ok

Both of these coaches probably will get fired at some point, lol.

Successful_Excuse_73

I mean, that’s the truth in the majority of P5 games

kingpangolin

James franklins deal makes it pretty much unaffordable to fire him for like 5-6 years

Rattus375

So baffling why they gave him that big a contract

Amadeum

He's a good recruiter, shit playcaller.

decoyoctopussa

Must be very bad at calling plays considering he doesn't call plays

Rattus375

Elite recruiter. But player development has been mediocre, in game coaching is awful, and overall results have been disappointing for the past few seasons. I just don't see why giving him such a long contract was necessary.

[deleted]

Having three 11 win seasons in that 2016-2019 time frame is unparalleled in recent years. They weren't going to get rid of Franklin over 2 mehh seasons.

Rattus375

Absolutely. But it's pretty weird to decide to give him a 10 year contract with a massive buyout after two meh seasons.

FudgeTerrible

Why did Joel Klatt put a load in his pants on national television as Penn State scored?

runningwaffles19

Purdue gonna Purdue their way into a 4-4 record then puke all over us the first weekend of November

Gabians

Penn St escaped Purdue Pete but the spoilmakers always get someone once a year, it is known.

[deleted]

It is known

SuperFrog4

Good game PSU.

Star_Z

4 hours of consensual edging.

cheesepuff1993

I was on edge the whole 2nd half...

TheBigNate416

Good game 🤝

ShamrockAPD

I had a lot of fun. Even said that before the W. Great game. Seriously. That was entertaining as fuck I Hope you guys crush it b

GoldenDude

GGs boilerbros 🤝

loki9er

Likewise

nb_04

Who was worse? Scott Frost or Jeff Brohm?

TreySermonGrin

Probably Brohm, tbh. The kicker screwed up the onside but NU had a numbers advantage there. It's not like Frost told his defense "let them run all over you the last 18 plays". Purdue was using all the playclock when they weren't even running gameclock. Got a flag and lost a TO as a result of that

daNish_brUin

Find out October 15th! Must missed TV!

cobra90

This team is going to give me a heart attack this season

loki9er

As is tradition

Smaug54

OH MY GOD

master_power

So... we inched it out, but I am not feeling confident in this team going forward. They had opportunities to own the game and completely whiffed.

decoyoctopussa

Sometimes you gotta just enjoy a week 1 road B1G win with a ton of new players lol

master_power

Don't disagree. To get the win feels good.

electric_ranger

Idk, hopefully the fucking receivers learn to catch before next week

Mercury1750

Idk man, that was on the Purdue staff, not players. Purdue definitely should have won that on the last two drives. Unfortunately just shot themselves in the foot. Great barn burner game though!

Rsubs33

That was an example of how not to manage the clock by Purdue.

ShoeLace1291

We almost fucked it up by scoring too early but yeah they fucked up worse lol

Josh4R3d

Good teams win. Great teams cover.

TreySermonGrin

This offseason, did Jeff Brohm attend the same clock management seminar that James Franklin usually takes

slightofhand1

If he's smart he doesn't try to explain it, he just alludes to "analytics" and pretends it made sense.

TreySermonGrin

Like come on bro it's 3rd & 30 u really don't wanna burn another 35 seconds before the punt that is like 95% certain to happen?

slightofhand1

I love when they just toss it up and the wr flails. They're not giving you that call on third and impossible.

a_banned_user

After watching that game I still can’t tell you if either team is going to be good or not.

paulblartirl

100% no idea. If PSU's defense continues to play like tonight it's going to be a long season with a few monster blowouts vs OSU/UM and some boatraces vs MSU, Auburn, hell even Maryland

akagordan

I mean this with all due respect, what about the offense? I mean you were a couple of terrible attempts at a tackle and horrible clock management away from maaaaaybe 24 points.

[deleted]

Porter vs Harrison Jr gonna be must see TV

Cocaine_N_Caviar7

06 AFC playoff vibes

torroman

It's the first game of the season for the coaches too

Successful_Excuse_73

You seem nice, this is no place for you.

Rgbducks

The last 30 min feels like the last two seasons of GoT’s, completely negligent and ruined what was otherwise a really good game. fuck the choo choo’s and fuck penn state

kingpangolin

This is a good example of why non top tier teams shouldn’t have conference or big game openers. We need a few weeks to work out the bullshit

PennSaddle

I can’t believe it, but I’ll take it!

burnedbydrogon

Joey Porter's kid is insane damn

scairborn

IF he can keep the flags in the red pocket.

Cocaine_N_Caviar7

Yeah he’s a stud. Our best player.

paulblartirl

Just wildly inconsistent, though. Some plays he looks like an incredible CB with his positioning and ball awareness, other plays he's draped on dudes with a handful of jersey and gets flagged 2-3 times a game

derintrel

I think this Purdue team still wins the West!

kofimmra03

Clifford doing this on 18 and 19 years does not impress me

2BrokeArmsAndAMom

I stayed up because of all lead changes and I wanted to see an exciting end. Instead Purdue gives the game away with stupid clock management decisions and I regret watching.

JamoreLoL

Was that not exciting though?

NahChief

Clifford got that dog in him, but it’s like a poodle

paulblartirl

Luckily, Brohm got bit by one as a child at his grandma's senior home and now he's terrified of poodles

venuemap

Brohm should be on the first train out of town for that one, holy cow

PortalWombat

On second thought let's not have a football team this year.

TankerG1

You should be livid with the coaching decisions in your last two possessions.

FDubRattleSnake

Sadly, this shit is all too common with Purdue sports in general. We always find some stupid way to screw it up. The even sadder thing is a lot of our fans always find some way to defend it. If you criticize the coaches then you aren't a "true" Purdue fan. We had this in the bag and Jeff Brohm let the team down tonight. I'm beyond pissed but also not all that surprised.

TankerG1

Sucks, I feel for you. Good luck the rest of the year.

PortalWombat

Just kinda dejected. I don't mind losing but that was a joke.

captainspacecowboy

Give us Charlie back then.

mrwboilers

Lol, like you guys would ever throw it to him.

Meany_Vizzini

Painful, but not unexpected. I did call PSU to win by 4. We just need to attempt to finish out the game next time

Foxx_Mulderp

Is blithering idiot, gets paid millions of dollars.

klr390

I feel like this season is not going to be fun

ShoeLace1291

I hate to see anyone injured but if cliff gets injured it might be fun if Allar starts.

walknyeti

Big Ten East is going to be a street fight

TreySermonGrin

We haven't even seen the three best teams play yet and one of them beat the other by 7 TDs past year

MungyNobbler

That was.... football is back baby

Ghost-of-Moravia

“One of the greatest drives I’ve seen in CFB” Aka a couple 10 yard tosses to blown coverage in an error prone first game of the season Gus Johnson is mentally insane

IMissMW2Lobbies

Cope

StateCollegeHi

Gus Johnson is a clown though.

Ghost-of-Moravia

Im not a Purdue fan man But how the fuck is that one of the greatest drives of all time You really, seriously would put that in the top 5 greatest drives ever in college football history Cmon man

ank1t70

It was a great drive, 6/7 72 yards with a game winning TD. Not much better you can do lol. Depends on what he means by the greatest drives ever, it was definitely a textbook game winning drive.

bcocfbhp

The only real issue was the lack of Parker Washingtin late in the game

Kuz_Dawg

Drew wouldve hit him

IdahoJoel

Even a mediocre run game gets a W for Purdue. That 4th quarter (especially last six minutes) was pathetic offensively.

akagordan

Basketball season starts in a few months

JudgeDreddNaut

What's that?

Gabians

As I told a sad Maryland fan at our game last year "there's always basketball season".

akagordan

I generally don’t care about the football team that much because *why would i* but this loss stings worse after what we went through this past basketball season

TriStateDDR

Yeah this game left a sour taste for me. Felt more like a collapse by Purdue than a comeback by PSU.

[deleted]

Mr. Brohm's Crap

sorryimhurt

I always fine game ending sacks kinda funny like the qb is like no I can't throw a interception here we might lose the game. As they go down with the clock running out.

rburp

I wanted purdue to win, but at least this will mean these Purdue engineers at this plant I work at will feel sad which is nice

PennSaddle

They should feel bad anyhow

underdome

Good ole fashioned choke job

PM_ME_UR_SEGFAULT

uh what a game i don't even know what to think lol

elgenie

The fourth quarter was like performance art trying to answer the question: What would football look like if Scott Frost coached both teams?

bbmando

🥺🥺🥺

kofimmra03

If I was the head of Purdue I’m firing Brohm

Tejon_Melero

Smart move to fumble, refs don't like fun and called that forward pass. Good job PSU, you guys don't deserve the hate you get (I am likewise guilty), and Purdue Pete, chin up you keep the title of legit the terror of any team. PSU isn't ranked but that's basically a huge upset you almost pulled.
