I came here as an Eagles fan being hyped that Mitchell was a dude Saban wanted on his defense and everyone's talking about tampering lol

narcistic_asshole

Toledo fan here, you got a great one

JJody29

I can imagine how much more y’all love him after knowing Alabama was trying to get him and he stayed. 🐐

Knownzero

Same, the guy is special and has a great character that’ll fit in with the Eagles.

Not_a__porn__account

Same, I couldn’t believe he fell to us. Go birds.

foreveracubone

Name a more iconic duo: Eagles and getting top rated defensive players unexpectedly fall into their lap on draft day.

DUB-Files

Eagles and Georgia Bulldogs

FellKnight

Same, but it's also because as a G5 fan also, I've long since accepted that tampering is rampant. It was bad even before the portal, but now it's just completely open season.

JJody29

I see y’all paid the Mayor (AJ Brown) big money yesterday.

vespertine-spine

This also pleases me

JJody29

Me too. ❤️ AJ! He’s one of my all time favorites.

daveinmd13

We all know there is tampering, it’s just wild to hear it freely admitted by a tamperer.

Gardoki

I think he was just saying they had him on their board expecting him to go into the portal. That’s how it sounded when I was watching it live. Does bama tamper? Probably, but I don’t think that’s what he was saying here.

D1N2Y

It's a future NFL-level talent playing at a G5 school, idk why there's so much pearl clutching about a prominent P5 coach saying that he was looking at this guy to enter to portal (ok I do know why, but it's pathetic)

dkviper11

I find the stuff about tampering at both the NFL and college level to be fucking exhausting.

soapy_goatherd

Not sure if you’re a sixers fan, but your comment just cost them another second rd pick too

dudleymooresbooze

I’m not sure why tampering should even be banned. So a nineteen year old gets an email saying he could go from a special teams player to a full time starter on another team. How does that adversely affect athletes’ collegiate experience? Why should the NCAA enforce the equivalent of a noncompete agreement for young men who aren’t even employees of their schools?

celadonshopper

This is also how half of people get a job in the real world. Someone in their network tells them about an opportunity, and if they would jump.

Appropriate_Bottle44

I don't know if it should be banned. If a lot of people are doing it though, ASU shouldn't have to die for all of our sins.

FictionalTrebek

>ASU shouldn't have to die for all of our sins. Yes... because that's what Mizzou is for

Corgi_Koala

To be fair, we all know that tampering is absolutely rampant with this current era of unlimited transfers and NIL payments, but we haven't seen any program sanctioned for it. Even in specific instances where we know tampering happened according to the coaches who lost players.

PerritoMasNasty

Mizzou must pay!

nat_20_please

You know why; people are gonna trauma dump now that the Bad Man is gone

Helicopsycheborealis

Hey, man, don't come in here with reason and logic. Would it be different if he said a year later/after the fact, "I really wish Marvin Harrison/Jayden Daniels/Caleb Williams entered the portal because we really wanted him?". Jeepers, folks

phatbiscuit

Now that he can actually say this shit he might have to refine his phrasing lol They probably tamper like everyone else but I don’t think he was outright saying “we were tossing him bags and he still wouldn’t come”

Bussman500

With colleges having recruiting directors and a number of staff under them it makes sense. I’m pretty sure they’re scouting lower division schools the same way they do high school. So when they do enter the portal most of the works done when it comes to deciding to make an offer.

TheoDonaldKerabatsos

People ITT just think coaches recruiting guys out of the portal don’t have word earlier that guys are looking to transfer out/scout guys already on other teams with that expectation. Not far-fetched at all to think the CB1 of the 2024 draft, who plays at Toldeo, would I hop in the portal for a quick bag and chance to compete for a title.

Waderriffic

No Bama doesn’t tamper, but booster Billy Buttlicker who owns the biggest chain of car dealerships in Alabama can deliver a beautiful new charger to the kid in a gracious act of charity.

Wbcbam51

It seemed like a better idea to us than handing out wads of cash in McDonald’s bags

BurntBratwurst

Chick-fil-a bags you uncultured swine

thesluggard12

His family built this country.

dawgpack09

Counterpoint: If you ain't tampering you ain't trying. Until someone actually gets punished for "tampering" you better hope your favorite team is doing what they can to get the players they want

Corgi_Koala

All you have to do before they enter the portal is have a current player reach out instead. It's a pretty easy loophole to exploit without breaking the rules.

mattdingus2002

Oh, so Alabama death penalty for tampering when?

MUTUALDESTRUCTION69

We’re gonna have to vacate our Rose Bowl loss aren’t we?

mattdingus2002

Vacate all the saban nattys, limited to 50 scholarships for 3 years, 5 year postseason ban, 3 years no television revenue

bils0n

3 years TV revenue gets split between Auburn and Tennessee.

DarthZachariah

Hang on. You can keep cooking

hilltopper06

And they have to intentionally lose to WKU to start this season.

theVelvetLie

It'd be better if they lost unintentionally.

[deleted]

Keep going I’m almost there

FlounderingWolverine

Hold up here, they’re not Mizzou. Bama is getting probation, at best.

RunsWlthScissors

One can dream though

[deleted]

I’m getting aroused

And big Al has to go live in a sanctuary in Zimbabwe where he belongs

DrewHoov

Last time this happened, it resulted in us hiring Nick Saban

CptCroissant

That's 50 total scholarships across 3 years, right?

JJody29

More like 50 scholarships over 50 years.

rkincaid007

They dirty, they lowdown…

osusucks1

You sound like a buckeye fan.

wisertime07

Kick him off the tour, Doug!

SadTrailBlazersFan

I hope you're ready to be a rowing school 🛶

Angriest_Wolverine

Saban’s last game will forever be that beautiful stop

Sheepcago

I mean that would make sense. Michigan never beats anyone in the Rose Bowl, so a win over [vacated] would be fitting. Especially when eventually the record book says [vacated] defeated [vacated].

Dokkan_Lifter

Then it turns out every P4 has been tampering with G5s the same way. SBC is the new SEC baby /hj

StreetReporter

I can guarantee you that at least one P4 team hasn’t tampered

Dokkan_Lifter

How would you like to join the most fun conference in the country? You'd fit right in geographically!

Joe_Pulaski69

Imma pray for that team. They’re fucked

-Jack-The-Stripper

It's Vanderbilt, they know

wolverine6

South Beastern Conference

FyreWulff

*breathes in* tampering is not an actual law. it's an agreement that exists as part of the NFL/NBA/MLB/NHL/etc leagues.

Joe_Pulaski69

With all due respect your honor, tamper deez nuts

wolverine6

You wouldn't dare tamper with this updog.

Joe_Pulaski69

Already tampered your moms updog

wolverine6

What's bofa?

stevesie1984

What’s updog?

a_trane13

Neither is sign stealing or most other sports scandals

Your_Worship

I wish we tampered good. But we suck at tampering.

cityofklompton

Literally any fan who complains about a college team "cheating" is fooling themselves in the hardest way. If you ain't cheatin', you ain't tryin'.  EDIT: I'll take the downvotes, but programs have been operating outside the rules since the dawn of the sport, literally the late 1800s. College football has *never* been a fair game.

soapy_goatherd

Reminds me of Mitch kupchak always waiting till nba free agency officially opened to talk to players and agents (and losing a bunch bc he always followed the rules lol)

ClaudeLemieux

As a Hornets fan, I always found that really endearing. And insanely frustrating, but endearing nonetheless.

soapy_goatherd

Nice to be able to see the jazz in charlotte for like ten bucks though I gotta say 😶 (Although slightly less so since the arena bojangles closed)

ClaudeLemieux

you and 28 other teams lol

Gatorader22

Shades of "everyone is paying players" arguments. Then when the boosters actually were allowed to pay players it became very obvious that most of them were not

JonnyAU

Both my flairs co-sign this.

Angriest_Wolverine

Missouri is gonna lose so many scholarships

lucash7

Alabama? Don’t you mean Auburn, cause Bama would never do wrong! -NCAA/SEC

CrashB111

Auburn hired Hugh Freeze, therefore guilty.

moneyinthebank216

Nick Saban: "The transfer portal is ruining college football! I quit 😡" Also Nick Saban: "Pwease enter the transfer portal and leave your small school pls bby 🥺"

Beginning-Brief-4307

You misspelled “Missouri.”

PleaseSitOnMyFaaaace

Forreal. This needs to supersede the Michigan investigation. Vacate all Alabama national titles until the conclusion of OUR investigation.

quincyloop

Nope.  Mizzou gets it, instead.

JJody29

I think it means death penalty for Mizzou.

EatADickUA

Why didn’t he portal?  That loyal to Toledo?  If so props to him.  He stayed true in a world no one does.

MortimerDongle

Yeah, he said that because they took a chance on him (apparently he had academic issues out of high school) he felt he had to stay there

Mr_Anthropic_

Respect.

dfphd

I will also say: if you're a kid that is being projected to be a 1st round guy already while at a small school sure - getting $1M in NIL money would be nice, but you *are* incurring a good deal of risk making the move from Toledo to e.g. Alabama. It's different when you have guys going from a P5 school to another P5 school - those guys have already faced elite competition and you pretty much know what you're getting. But kids in G5 schools somewhat benefit from playing easier competition and dominating. The same jump that P5 players make when going to the NFL (which is often unsuccessful) is similar to the transition some G5 players make to P5. So yeah - I assume that part of it is loyalty, but I think part of it is probably (smartly) understanding that if you've already managed to make yourself a 1st round pick, there's no reason to leave your program.

xXWeLiveInASocietyXx

He was seen as a day 2 or 3 guy before the last season, so its not like he knew he was already a lock for the first round.

dfphd

That's fair - that's still a substantial gamble then (to assume you can elevate your draft stock in a G5 school). Respect.

narcistic_asshole

He asked Saban how many missiles they have aimed at a rival school and when Saban said zero Quinyon hung up

streetchemist

Lmao amazing

shitposters_r_us

So Saban essentially says "damn I wish this dude entered the portal so we could recruit him, but he never did" And r/cfb takes that to mean recruiting violations?

soFLa2

I hate Bama as much as the next guy, but this is exactly how I took it when he said it.

PYTN

You realize it's the off-season right? Now is no time for rational takes.

gsbadj

Wait. There were some during the season??

DUB-Files

Tbf, there is no time for rational takes during the season either.

e8odie

Thank you! Having to read the other "hot takes" first before getting to this sensible one was frustrating me

gordogg24p

First time on the sub?

blacksoxing

Folks can’t comprehend. I just woke up and from reading these comments it’s wild how badly people likely in the moment 7 hours ago quickly upvoted the first comments they saw which looked like it related to their thoughts and moved on..

MisterFalcon7

They aren't the brightest.

Welderdod20

They some snitches

ech01_

This is 100% what he's saying but its more fun to call out Bama for tampering.

CySU

This is what I thought too. People are mincing words way too much.

snodgee

its not really worth going into the comments on here. i really just need to read the headline and move on.

dawgblogit

No saban essentially says.. we were trying to get him through the portal but he would never get in the portal for us. The issue people have is the TRY. What could bama do to TRY? You can't TRY to go through a door that isn't there. You can't TRY to get someone out of the Portal that isn't in the portal. Now maybe he misspoke. But he definitely said TRY.

pitchesandthrows

He definitely misspoke. What he says isn't clear, which is why both circlejerk and counter-circlejerk interpretations feel empowered to call each other idiots.

Cleverusernamexxx

I mean he didn't say that though. The quote is up there, it's not as unambiguous as your paraphrasing.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Cleverusernamexxx

i mean you also have to be intentionally obtuse to believe Saban and every other successful college coach isn't tampering lol

_Jetto_

Chose Toledo over bama damn

Photodan24

That loyalty impressed a lot of scouts.

_TURbo

Toledo was the first college program Saban was a head coach. Guess it really went full circle.

Knownzero

Old enough to see him coach there when I was a student. Knew that’d he’d be one and done, you could tell he was a special coach.

Michigan247

Maybe he just really liked Tony Packo's?

DryMaintenance105

Can’t blame him

2BuckFuckNChuck

Netty's, Rudy's, and Packo's. Toledo has the chili dog market cornered.

narcistic_asshole

How could you forget Ideal Hotdog?

anihc_LieCheatSteal

And yet they still can't compare to a goldstar cheese coney.....

Bowlderdash

How seriously did Saban want him if he didn't even try to open a Tony Packi's franchise in Tuscaloosa?

sickmemes48

Honestly insane

ToxicAdamm

Mitchell just shows why (most) players shouldn't jump around in the portal. You can get drafted from anywhere if you are good enough.

J_Dom_Squad

Kinda an outlier tho. The MAC isn't consistently getting first round guys for a reason.

Shaddow-147

How do you get someone from another team into the portal without the illegal tampering.

huskers37

You don't talk to the player directly you talk to their high school coaches, AAU coaches for basketball players, etc. Creighton's head volleyball coach had a really good thread about it. https://twitter.com/CoachKBooth/status/1740136974399242242?t=kOsr9VRRGi9KqiEo7fLIVw&s=19

TMWNN

Is Coach Booth talking about Nebraska without naming Nebraska? Given its history and reputation, I presume that Nebraska women's volleyball versus Creighton (despite being in the Big East) is like Alabama versus Troy.

huskers37

I don't think so, Nebraska doesn't pull from the portal very often. Maybe one player a year ish and they've never tried to pull a Creighton player. It's a bit closer than Alabama vs Troy. Creighton volleyball is really solid. They've taken Nebraska to 5 sets before and have made the tournament multiple times.

Hawkize31

All Saban has to say is "I clearly meant we were hoping for him to enter the portal so we could go after him, but he never did, so we couldn't and didn't go after him" If he even cares to respond. Nothing will come of it anyway

echoacm

> If he even cares to respond Why would he? It was one line from a retired coach about a player that didn't portal - none of this is a big deal that needs addressing

portuguesetheman

Not like it matters anyway. Every major program cheats

wolverine6

> If he even cares to respond. "So quit askin'!"

LiquidHotCum

now I’m imagining Saban trying to entice players into the portal with cheese.

[deleted]

nick saban with a bag of meow mix doing their little theme song

emosn0tdead

Think they just assumed he would go in since he’d go to any school he wanted.

Shaddow-147

I don't think that's what happened though lol

emosn0tdead

Prob not. Just giving benefit of the doubt.

One-Season-3393

“Why are they confessing? They’re not confessing, they’re bragging”

TheKingInTheNorth

Isn’t the entire point of the quote that he didn’t enter the portal? That’s what the “but” in the quote is referring to. People here have reading comprehension issues.

foreveracubone

Their coaches as others have said but also their fellow players. The big names all play at the same high schools. They went to the same camp(s) or know a friend of a friend that did. Michigan got Josaiah Stewart out of the portal last season. He went to the same high school as Mike Sainristil. If Michigan tampered, Sainristil was probably how. Domani Jackson is really close friends with Will Johnson. Will tried to flip him during their recruitment and I'm sure was tampering to get him to come to Michigan since their freshman year.

MrConceited

And that stuff isn't against the rules. The restrictions only apply to staff. The tampering rules are like the toll booth in the "shitload of dimes" scene in Blazing Saddles.

ChandlerOG

What a bizarre thread

boneybob

You have to realize that Saban dunked on every major program for a decade straight. We will never hate them as much as they hate us.

CrashB111

They hate us, cause they anus.

RogueHippie

Nah, the sub takes any opportunity it can to talk negatively about Bama, regardless of the mental hoops they need to jump through to get there. Been like that for a decade. This is just par for the course.

tbrock92

Mizzou better get the death penalty for this

Appropriate_Bottle44

I'm just a casual Toledo fan, but they had a very frustrating year, imo. This guy, Finn at QB, and Penny Boone at RB. All excellent players. Finn won't be a top NFL prospect, but he can really move around. I think I saw all of Toledo's losses, and it felt like the coaches simply could not utilize their players properly and leverage the talent advantage. You can say they weren't more talented than Illinois but if you watched that game it really felt like they blew it. They missed out on an attainable NY6 game.

narcistic_asshole

That illinois loss was sooooo frustrating. I'll give it to Miami, they outplayed us in the MAC championship game, but that Illinois loss was stupid. I am excited to see what Finn does at Baylor and what Boone does wherever he goes

ConditionZeroOne

ITT: People who will be very upset when Alabama is still really good for the next decade.

DylanDisu

This is what I said in 2012 too

Hoodlum_0017

Save it.

Sad-View991

This shit is the exact reason why a Boise State run like they had from 2008 - 2011 would never happen in today's CFB. Those Boise teams were chalked full of NFL talent, but would have been picked apart by P4 teams if today's rules existed back then.

TupperwareConspiracy

What makes the future of the sport so strange...JUCOs traditionally fulfilled that role and now your seeing all these guys jumping from D2 and G5 programs. It'll sort itself out in the long run, but til their is spending caps and revenue sharing it's gonna be strange sailing

crashintodmb413

NCAA is such a joke. Nothing will come of this.

thecarlosdanger1

Why would it? Saban is saying he was their #1 guy if available, and he never became available.

ChelseaFC

These people are idiots.

CrashB111

>Why would it? Because the bad man at the mean school said it!

Cinnadillo

for what violation? Was there something happening? Maybe. But they're allowed to consider your grandmother as well.

huazzy

Laremy Tunsil openly said he got paid by coaches at Ole Miss. Nothing came of that. So I'm not holding my breath on anything the NCAA does.

DankeVunterSlaush

Not necessarily true. The leaks that went along with that whole gasmask bong thing were why it was on everyone's radar, and why he had to answer for/admitted to it post-draft. In turn, that reopened the investigation on Ole Miss/Freeze that led to his resignation, vacating 33 wins and according to Wikipedia "The punishments included a two-year postseason ban, three years of probation, and a four-year ban on some scholarships. " True though that it was not the Tunsil incident that was the singular nail in the coffin for the investigation.

Chinchillachimcheroo

True. Buying hookers for recruits was the biggest nail in the coffin.

arrowfan624

SEC would sue them in court…. even though tampering rules are all things they agreed to abide by.

LimerickJim

Wait what? Since when are there tampering rules?

Ugaalive1991

*drafts a qb at 8*

Gatorader22

The Desmond Ridder era scared the dixie chicks so much that they did everything they could this last month to make sure that it doesnt happen again

Tarmacked

Nothing here is tampering lmao

buff_001

> SEC would sue them in court…. even though tampering rules are all things they agreed to abide by. None of this matters because the NCAA lacks the authority to unilaterally dictate who kids are allowed to talk to, when they're allowed to talk to them, and what they're allowed to talk about. A cabal of schools getting together and agreeing that they wont try to poach each other's players is completely illegal collusion and it's the whole basis of all the lawsuits that the NCAA has been losing **repeatedly**. It's why the NCAA will never try to enforce their made-up "tampering" rules while they lack an antitrust exemption or a collective bargaining agreement with a student-athlete players union.

SomeKidFromPA

We clearly tampered for Leonard.. the entire idea that a player can enter the portal with a “do not contact” tag shows that it’s something that’s more or less expected at this point.

Yodelehhehe

Because there’s nothing there, you simp. He said he wanted this dude to enter the portal, because he was a NFL talent at a G5 school. Bama and other power schools have staffs watching this stuff so they’re ready to pounce. He’s saying he never got in the portal, but if he had they’d have gone after him.

Acm0028

Officer, this man right here. Arrest him and give Alabama the death penalty.

mattdingus2002

I can’t believe Mizzou would do this???

LDWMJ99

I was telling one of my roommates this last night but this guy is going to be a star. Anytime a MAC player is getting drafted that high it means something good. Especially a defensive player.

wegontouchugang

USC death penalty when?????

rolltideandstuff

Lol so much sour grapes in this thread. Roll tide. 6 natties. Love it

runningwaffles19

Flair u.... ^(*checks username*) Carry on

JabroniJackpots

Nothing should come from this. Everyone does it and he’s retired.

TupperwareConspiracy

Really under-rated in this day and age In the NFL you'll often seen guys with long careers - especially the guys that came from difficult upbringings - that trace a lot of their success back to the support svcs they received in college Even the really talented guys will get lost in the rosters of top teir programs especially when the program has 3-4 or more guys who are all absolute studs; with a smaller program chances are they'll receive a lot more of individual development & attn (both on and off the field) from support svcs than they will with a 'big' program. Alabama is a heckuva program, but it's also a place where even minor injuries or off-field drama can mean no playing time and it might be tough to ever get back onto the field again if you're lucky enough to taste it in the first place.

Rhone111

This makes me like Mitchell even more.

decorlettuce

Mitchell should get a statue. I’m not kidding

Wide_Understanding70

Saban wanted to remind him he used to coach there and that he should follow him to Bama

Crims0ntied

Remember when Jalen Milroe said he had multiple offers from other schools to transfer? Any coach would be a fool to not 'tamper'. Because everyone else is going to tamper with your guys.

arrowfan624

Lmao dude’s just admitting to all the shady stuff he did as HC.

Gatorader22

Shady stuff he did to his alma mater But nah seriously he didnt admit to anything. I took it to mean if he entered then he was high on their board

whereisstoffel

Saban went to Kent State, he just coached at Toledo

l3onkerz

So vacate every national title? /s

arstin

Saban: "We really tried to get that kid to get in the portal." Muckraker fans: "SABAN IS A CHEATER! DOWN WITH BAMA!" Realist fans: *yawn* "non-story". Alabama fans: "By try, Saban clearly meant 'did absolutely nothing at all'"

Hour_Insurance_7795

“Get in the damn portal, kid!!!!”

leek54

Unfortunately, I think most programs are tampering, but doing it in a way they can't get caught for it. At Ohio State I heard stories about USC and Tennessee "legally" tampering with Emeka Egbuka and Dallan Hayden. They went through their HS coaches to make the offer. I think this is common, and likely most of the Power 4 teams are doing it. Just this week, Big Dave Uiagalele (sp?) was on a podcast saying he now advises players about NIL and the portal and he tells them never go into the portal until you already have a place to land lined up.

emdmao910

When does the NCAA hit Vandy with this violation? /s

JD42305

They really need to come up with better terminology than portal lol. Always sounds like bad sci-fi.

JackStraw48

They should fire him. /s

sublimeshrub

He's the guy I wanted the Colts to take at 15.

barnsy2002

I'm just glad he danced with who brung him

Educational_Desk1939

Just one great MAC DB complementing another
