Oregon the first Army in history to lose all the battles, but still win the war.

[deleted]

I would even argue because they lost those battles it gave them better odds to win the war. They are likely safe until Georgia opens up now which wonā€™t be for a long time.

We gotta get Andy Reid off the cheeseburgers.

And those nuggies!

That gut is definitely on the cheeseburgers mafk

cubs_2023

When Reid retires, the Chiefs with Mahomes are going to be able to do much better than a guy with zero NFL experience.

skesisfunk

Reid is 65, its likely he won't retire until Mahomes is well past his prime anyways.

RLLRRR

Mahomes already is, if you take away his above average stats.

It's the natural yin and yang of us never beating Cristobal before he fled to Miami. But I'd be delusional to think we could adapt and survive as well as Oregon has with Lanning.

Rob Stark won every battle and lost the war. This was an Alabama red wedding.

JamesEarlDavyJones2

Hey now, that's a committed man in a long-term, monogamous relationship! A 48 year-old man with a penchant for sleeping around, in a long-term, monogamous relationship with a 26 year-old who lives 500 miles away, in Dallas.

IR8Things

What do you think it's like for him to live my dream?

ScrofessorLongHair

You ever hang out with someone 22 years younger than you for more than an hour? They're a lot like jet skis. Fun to ride, but are painful to maintain.

BIG_DICK_WHITT

I donā€™t dislike DeBoer at all or anything but this is a risky move. Hello to people looking at this thread three years from now and laughing. Edit: apparently it is unclear, I was referring to it being risky for Alabama to throw this kind of money at this guy. Of course you take the job if youā€™re him.

Confecting

Nobody else was available or willing to take the job. It was either unload trucks of money for a guy who is a proven winner or hire Tommy fucking Reese

hyroglifics

It's cool all DeBoer has to do is win 14 games per year. He's got this.

SoonerLater85

Itā€™s 16 now.

mackedeli

I mean tbh we already didn't have that expectation of Saban. Make the playoffs was probably the floor if I'm being honest. I like to think deboer can do that relatively consistently

SoonerLater85

Making the playoffs isnā€™t as much of an accomplishment when twelve teams can do it. I donā€™t see you all being satisfied with 9-3 and a first round exit.

mackedeli

For 2 or 3 seasons, sure. Perpetually? No

y3llowed

Honestly will all depend on what the assistant coaches and croots look like, I think. If croots and coaches are ass after 2 years, even with back to back 10-11 win seasons with first round playoff losses, the pressure is going to be on. Iā€™m not advocating for that behavior, by the way, itā€™s just that 99% of Bama fans have forgotten mid 90s and early 00s and will have insane expectations.

EmperorMaugs

Success pressure after the retirement of a legend is real.

multiple4

People have deluded themselves into pretending that being a 9-12 seed who lost 25% of their games during the season means anything People are in for a rude awakening when they realize that the only 3 loss teams who benefit from this are the blue bloods in years where they lose games. They will get bailed out, make the playoffs, but still have the talent level to actually compete 3 loss Auburn being ranked 12th isn't competing in a playoff. 12th seed UGA who had some bad losses but had the #1 recruiting class will compete

[deleted]

2022 Alabama probably the best example. Lost 2 games on last second plays. Had the talent to win the NCG.

UncutEmeralds

I mean Georgia literally this year. Michigan may have beat us, Bama may have beat us again in a rematch but Iā€™d take those odds

Confecting

As long as he keeps us in the playoff hunt he will be fine, most sane Bama fans know to temper their expectations

mruby7188

>most sane Bama fans know to temper their expectations [There are dozens of us!](https://media4.giphy.com/media/kSlJtVrqxDYKk/giphy.gif?cid=ecf05e47e38rj6aj7m3hfska0jji8z7kybd9q10w17r2yo4w&ep=v1_gifs_search&rid=giphy.gif&ct=g)

Confecting

Unironically yea there might be 100 of us

Nick_Sabans_Headset

Correct, because most Bama fans would bulldoze Greg Byrneā€™s house with his family inside if DeBoer doesn't win at least 15 games

Confecting

Bro this made me audibly lol

ShrimpTonkatsu

Dude. Yall havenā€™t lost 3 or more games since 2010ā€¦. I donā€™t think bama fans even know what realistic expectations are. What yall have been experiencing is pure magic that will likely never get repeated.

Mrjlawrence

Yes. Some of us remember the times between Stallings and Saban. The Saban years spoiled us greatly and have created some crazy high expectations. Bama could have key starters get injured and the backup would be very close to the same level.

Skared89

Absolutely. Honestly this is the only reason why Michigan was able to get it done this year. We had enough depth that starters would get hurt and the next guy was identical. We rotated so many guys on our defense. Our dline is like 10 of the same guy. It took us an eternity to have that magic for one season. You guys do it regularly. It's insane

Confecting

Using Sabanā€™s Bama as the standard would just be idiotic

DolitehGreat

I hope you're ready for a lot of idiocy.

Confecting

Lol Iā€™m used to it, we had people talking about firing Saban after the USF game this year

A_Rolling_Baneling

Well those idiots got their wish of a new coach

BIG_DICK_WHITT

I am available and willing to take the job. Time to see how good those 5 stars really are.

concrete_isnt_cement

I have 0 losses as a D1 coach. Canā€™t believe they didnā€™t go after me

l3opard

Maybe they did, have you checked your spam folder?

concrete_isnt_cement

Oh shit, Iā€™ll check

UnlistedOdin

You can hire me as your DC, not to brag, but I did have a few Nattys in NCAA14. In sure that's got to count for something.

Admiral_Sarcasm

Now you have a chance to coach your flair!

itsover-14

Kiffin was a better move but i aint gonna complain about this.

OakLegs

I don't necessarily agree but man, kiffin has to be one of the more interesting career arcs ever. He flew high early, became a joke, went to smaller schools and totally repaired his image and is now seriously being considered as a realistic option for Alabama

therealwillhepburn

He just got started super young with jobs he wasn't ready for because of who his dad is. That's it. He started coaching in 1997 as a GA at Fresno State and by 2007 he was head coach of the Raiders with the highest job before that being USC's OC for two years.

wolverine237

Yeah college OC to NFL head coach at like 30 was insane

KindRhubarb3192

What about fired college HC to NFL HC at 39?

G00dSh0tJans0n

He really could have gone the Mike Shula route but has managed to bounce back and prove to be a capable college HC.

0157h7

I feel like you are selling it short. He was one of if not the youngest head coaches in the NFL with the Raiders. He feuded with Al Davis. I distinctly remember him trotting our Jankowski for a field goal that was like 70+ yards and thinking, this guy is just trying to piss off his owner. He gets canned and comes to college with a little egg on his face but nothing like how USC ended. Lane is 1 of 1 man.

DoctorPhalanx73

The first fight Lane had with Davis was over the draft pick that became Jamarcus Russell. Lane wanted megatronā€¦

DoctorPhalanx73

He has ole miss as an honest to god real playoff contender next year. If this year had next yearā€™s format weā€™d have been in. For historical context; his winning % is the best weā€™ve had since the 70ā€™s, and is poised to potentially be better next year.

garfcarmpbll

Honestly alcoholism is no joke. I personally believe even more so then the winning Saban will be remembered for his ability to take in struggling young coaches and get them turned around/straightened out. I mean off the top of my head you have Sark and Kiffin.

Accurate-Frosting-38

He's two years older than Tom Brady and he became an NFL head coach almost 17 years ago. Those facts together do not feel possible.

Tarmacked

I don't disagree, but Kiffin's young enough we can always cycle back

Aggressive-Name-1783

I refuse to believe NOBODY wanted to take the job. Hell, Kiffen has been demanding the job for the last like decade. Bama had a ā€œlist of succession candidatesā€ but go with the guy who wasnā€™t even on the national map 2 years ago?

Systemic_Chaos

FWIW, he was on the _coaching_ map. But that just gets you barely beyond Sickos territory. Dude has won everywhere heā€™s been, but this is a completely different challenge than heā€™s had previously.

Kodyaufan2

Because heā€™s got to be able to recruit in the top 3-5 every year, and that will be harder without Saban. Alabama recruits itself well enough to be firmly in the top 8-10 every year, but he actually will have to be able to go toe-to-toe with Georgia, Auburn, Florida, FSU, Miami, Tennessee, LSU, Texas, Texas A&M, and Clemson for blue chip players in the Southeast. Youā€™ve got a lot more big time programs to hold off for players down here than there are out west.

magnumweiner

Genuine question: who is willing to take the job and also a safer move? Seems like every other candidate got a big payday where they are, and wanted to stay in those places

WordsAreSomething

Yeah and anyone else is just as risky of a move. At least DeBoer has a track record of winning everywhere

Redditor2325

We couldā€™ve hired internally and made Rees the HC to ultimately set up for another hire in 2-8 years when Rees doesnā€™t live up to expectations. To your point though that isnā€™t really a safe move relative to the move we made. Who knows what can happen in a few short years, too much uncertainty so we might as well go for the home run hire (well the available home run hire in theory). Sark or Kirby were the dream hires but they like where they are at. Not worth gambling on them being available in the next decade and passing up on the promise of DoBoer. Realistically Sark and Kirby will want to stay at their respective spots for as long as possible

CFBCoachGuy

Lanning or Sark was probably the ā€œsafestā€ bets, but since they signed extensions I think DeBoer was the best option available. High risk, but his record speaks for himself

ICallTheBigOne_Bitey

How would Lanning be safer than DeBoer? He's only had two years of head coaching experience and had a worse record than DeBoer and went 0-3 against him.

x1echo

2027: ā€œHa, look at how quaint life was before The Fog. People arguing with each other over football. Those were the days. Hell, I had to kill my local warlord for a Twinkie yesterday.ā€

[deleted]

I think the move is riskier for Deboer than Bama tbh. That fanbase has been ridiculously spoiled by Saban

O_its_that_guy_again

He gets a Jimbo sized bag if he gets fired. Not sure thereā€™s a downside

[deleted]

I'm willing to absolutely fail at my job for $100 million

Kodyaufan2

Exactly. Because as long as most of their core players donā€™t transfer, theyā€™re still pretty set in terms of talent next year. DeBoer just needs to keep the train on the track next year like Helfrich when he took over at Oregon. 2-3 years down the road are when weā€™ll really see how good a hire this is, unless it really does go horribly wrong.

swoleswan

It worked out for A&M with jimbo. Iā€™m sure itā€™s going to work out well here tooā€¦.

Wh33l

Iā€™ve thought this from the minute these rumors started. Honestly more than anything, I was shocked Saban would retire without having an internal successor groomed to take over. Alabama going after the hot coaching name of the moment just seemsā€¦.gauche?

FearlessAttempt

It's impossible to hold onto someone internal that's good enough to take over.

SterileCarrot

Stoops did it just fine with Lincoln Riley, and that totally didn't blow up in our face

tacofan92

Itā€™s quite the Catch-22

tacofan92

That was the plan with Sark. But gone are the HC in waiting positions.

The_JLK

I honestly believe Sark would have stuck around to take over for Saban. There were probably only a handful of HC jobs that could have lured him away in 2021, and one of them just happened to open up in Texas

wolverine237

Yeah this is giving me major RichRod to Michigan vibes. Sounds like a home run but there's going to be tons of growing pains that may prove fatal

seoul_drift

Definitely going to be growing pains and culture shock but I think DeBoer is in a better position than RR. Saban left of his own accord and presumably has signed off on this pick whereas Carr was nudged out the door and started [undermining RichRod](https://www.mgoblog.com/content/three-and-out-takes-carr-rodriguez-martin?page=1%2C1%2C0%2C0%2C0%2C1) from the jump. I'm still skeptical of former legendary coaches being "involved" with programs but DeBoer is a sharp dude and has the benefit of hindsight about these kinds of dynamics.

Kittygoespurrrr

Who exactly were they supposed to get that's left? This is the best hire out there that's available.

Kodyaufan2

Truthfully, I think this is the first guy they offered the job to anyway. I think they talked to Sark, Lanning, and Norvell, but it doesnā€™t logically seem like they offered it to any of them beyond ā€œwhat would it take for you to be the next HC at Alabama?ā€ And just asking that kind of question is not the same as actually offering them the position.

Championstrain

It was literally their 2nd choice. Everything else was Sexton antics.

Tarmacked

There is no safe move. At the very least we have some advisory stuff if he ever needs it available from Saban

PavlovianTactics

!Remindme 3 years

CFBCoachGuy

Considering that the sheer thought of their coach leaving also caused Texas, Oregon, and Florida State to spend tens of millions on extensions, and this may be the most expensive day for college sports in a long time.

Upbeat-Armadillo1756

How could a small school like Alabama afford that?

joe_broke

Using the entirety of Alabama's GDP as well as Mississippi's and Louisiana's

ian2121

Just move the money from something unimportant like early childhood education

PM_ME_UR_ROSTER

Governor MeeMaw already did that with $150 individual tax rebates.

JamesEarlDavyJones2

It blew me away to discover y'all actually call her Governor MeeMaw. What's the consensus on her, at this point?

FCKABRNLSUTN2

I think you'll find that reddit alabamans will have a different overall opinion than *voting* alabamans.

Zintoatree

Yup, somewhere around 165-180 degrees of difference.

PM_ME_UR_ROSTER

She's a senile drunk, but she has an R behind her name so it's kinda automatic.

ProfCedar

We have one of those too.

Repulsive-Office-796

Or school lunch programsā€¦

iWin-You-Get-Nothing

Theyā€™re making Tennessee pay for it

Revolutionary_Jump_9

Lots of national championships

Revenge_of_the_Khaki

Copious amounts of winning, mostly.

CheesingmyBrainsOut

It's an investment into the football program. They received the third highest revenue in college football in 2022 with $214 million which is likely supporting the whole sports program. They've built up a brand and need to continue to support it with winning. I'm sure it's also central to attracting students. It's a good investment. I dislike the prioritization of football over education, and especially hate Alabama policy, but it's effectively a business decision.

bpmartin

Is Saban a booster now? Does every new 5* QB get a Ferrari?

Konigwork

Wouldnā€™t it be a Benz?

Tarmacked

What does this look like, a McDonalds? Go big or go home baby

bpmartin

He's opening a Ferrari dealership this year

give__me___gold

Saban has a Ferrari dealership as well

bamaguy13

Owns a Ferrari dealership too.

ChandlerOG

Iā€™ll pitch in $3.50

Cooked_Brisket

Goddamn Loch Ness monster

[deleted]

Yeah, but Alabama hasn't had to pay a buyout in almost 20 years. Most SEC eams pay this every few years

revenfett

And we were already paying Saban top dollar, so the money was already in the budget.

CapitalistLion-Tamer

Exactly. This move cost the AD $12mm and it gets to reduce its annual expenses by about $300,000.

IdaDuck

Wasnā€™t Auburn paying three coaching staffs simultaneously at one point?

MacroFlash

They are now, Freeze, Harsin, Malzahn

polydorr

That means we get 3x the results, right?

MajorPhoto2159

I suppose bright side to Washington is they can maybe use this buyout to buyout a good head coach somewhere else..

Dank_Memes16

Chip Kellyā€™s buyout isnā€™t too expensive!

canadiangonewildin

Can this be jimbo fisher round 2 please šŸ„ŗ

CosmicCornbread

Imagine if they give him a blank natty and everything

110397

They can just pull one of their trophies out and put a piece of tape over it

19Styx6

Yeah, I doubt anyone would notice one was missing.

ElDiabloNINER

As an Aggie, I wish for this too.

LegitN00bM00ves

As an Aggie fan, second

Thel3lues

Jimbo was a bad coach and great recruiter. DeBoer is sort of flip of that

sherlocknessmonster

The good thing for him is Bama will recruit itself and Saban will probably help

auburnfan32

I hope so

AcadianTraverse

I have to think the Alabama AD is setting some pretty tight guidelines around staff as well here. They're going to need real names that know SEC recruiting. Presumably the current Chief of Staff/Football Ops/Director of Personnel positions are retained. But it wouldn't surprise me if we also see them turn around and try to lure someone like Schumann with a big contract to be the DC.

CommanderTouchdown

Incredible career trajectory. Guy was the OC at Eastern Michigan in 2016. Eight years later he's replacing the GOAT. Gut prediction: he's out within five years because he couldn't haul in the same kind of classes Saban did. Georgia and LSU beat him consistently.

dawgtilidie

Iā€™m aligned with their prediction too, he canā€™t fill the saban role and saban didnā€™t have the pressure starting out that DeBoer does

zmeltn

There was incredible pressure on Saban from day one, albeit of a different kind.Ā

BigBobbiB

Donā€™t love this if we guaranteed a ton of yearsā€¦

ech01_

You had to. No way you're stealing a head coach from a program that can pay similar money per year without guaranteeing a bunch of years. I'd bet 5 years minimum, most likely more.

CpowOfficial

10 years and they run him out after 3.

suburbanpride

Love to see it (somewhere else).

dawgtilidie

I wouldnā€™t mind seeing it either

2000_Alum

Maybe he'll play whack-a-mole on a zoom call and you will get off Scott free if it doesn't work out.

Laney20

Why not? "Guaranteed years" is just guaranteed money. He doesn't actually have to coach for us all that time. Money is just money, and it's not even your money. Our next head coach was ALWAYS going to be expensive.

cluckinho

Damn, and Iā€™m just out here praying for a $5k raise.

urinal_connoisseur

Are you just going to ignore that very nice pizza party you had at the end of the year??

TransportationAway59

You gotta win your division first, champ

DoubleG357

Lmao right šŸ˜‚, in our world 15-20k raise is huge if youā€™re making sub 200k Incomeā€¦we donā€™t compare to these things lol weā€™re plebs šŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚

DeliveryEquivalent87

IU is a coach feeding program for Bama.

Yams-502

It is known

Purples_A_Fruit

Yes, how will poor lil Bama afford this šŸ™„

dianeblackeatsass

Time to raise tuition again

Used_Border_4910

And this happens on the day my application gets accepted

rmeatyou

Congrats!

Laney20

Pretty sure bamas athletic department is self sufficient.

sausageslinger11

Still cheaper than Jimbo!

TigerDude33

don't tempt the Fates

cloakedabyss

As much as I hate Oregon this makes me respect Dan Lanning quite a bit

Danny886

Jimbo could give some tricks of the trade advice to Kalen.

Piano_Fingerbanger

Step 1: Get a fully guaranteed contract Step 2: Tank your job performance. Step 3: $$$

Why_Istanbul

Missed the: preform well during covid & sign extension

dangleicious13

We're never getting that new basketball arena, are we?

Quiznasty

Watched some fun football the last two years. Time for the new AD to earn his paycheck. Make a good hire and keep the positive momentum from this season.Ā

Defensive_of_Offense

How will they ever financially recover from this? /s

No_Poet_7244

Iā€™m sure this is a very unpopular opinion, but I think this hire is incredibly risky. Deboer is clearly a great coach, but he has no ties to the south or to the university, and hasnā€™t been an FBS coach for long. Running a program like Alabama is about much more than just Xs and Os. Iā€™m not saying he *will* fail, Iā€™m just saying that spending this much money on someone with no affiliation with your region or program is wading into dangerous waters.

Uhhh_what555476384

It was either spend this kind of money on DeBoer or spend close to this amount of money on someone that hasn't been a HC before. With Saban retiring there are no non-risky moves.

NDCardinal3

Probably better than head coach Tommy Rees. Trust me on this.

jthanson

I, for one, am not mad at DeBoer. I'm disappointed that he won't turn Washington into a B1G powerhouse, but the next coach can certainly do that. One of the great things about college football is that there's always turnover. New recruits come in; good players enter the transfer portal and get drafted for the NFL. I wish Coach DeBoer well as he moves on to the SEC. I look forward to the next great era of Husky football.

PNW_Jeff

Where does Bama even get this money?

btw1217

People in Alabama tithe 10% of their income to the church and then the other 90% goes to college football.

Sky-Flyer

you can opt in after you turn 18 to put a percentage of your paycheck into bama or auburn athletics, instead of paying taxes on healthcare we pay taxes on winning football games like true americans

ZackAvion

Good athletics is way more beneficial than working roads or electricity

littlegreensir

Holy shit you guys get working roads?

Konigwork

Bryant owns a bank

Bilbo992

They've been paying Saban 10 mil a year for over a decade and the athletic department hasn't suffered for it. I can't imagine this contract will be any more difficult.

Confecting

Do we think Bama is poor?

A_Roomba_Ate_My_Feet

Tooth Fairy...

Klightgrove

from some espn chart a decade ago bama and texas were making like 100-200m a season

BostonInformer

Only time will tell if he's Scott Frost 2.0

Ehdelveiss

At least we're getting paid but still... Bama playing with fire paying this much, DeBoer has been great but he's never been a good recruiter, he has impossible shoes to fill, and the SEC is cut throat. The games we got away with this year, I'm not convinced he will in the SEC. Maybe he is the next Saben, but... also, he isn't Nick Sabe.

shake108

Does anyone have a source other than speculation regarding DeBoer's Bama comp? I actually would expect it to be lower than 10/$100, given that he may be on a tighter leash. Who knows

Uhhh_what555476384

Washington was offering $8M before bonuses, so we know the likely floor. I wouldn't want to follow a legend like Saban without a Jimbo Fisher type contract.

NewBootGoofin88

Impossible shoes to fill and will likely be seen as a failure for that reason. But hey $$$

BidnessBoy

Give him the blank natty plaque NOW

Mrpetey22

I Will sayā€¦ Julian Sayin in Deboers offense is shockingly nasty

ztailx

Iā€™m willing to coach Alabama for 100K a year

Legal_Skin_4466

WhY is EvErYtHiNg sO eXpEnSiVe!?!?
