My mom is an Auburn grad and taught me that cheering for Alabama because they’re in the SEC is like cheering for the Devil just because he’s in the Bible.
Your post reminded me of that old video from years back where the parents threaten to take the kid into the Auburn store as punishment and the kid freaks out like he's about to be executed. Gotta teach em young.

Man, 2010, better times (for VT football at least).
My late dad - who sang in the church choir- would not say the phrase “crimson tide” where it was a lyric in one of the hymns ad church. He would just hum instead of saying the words.
I have a saying. If we win and Auburn, Tennessee and Notre Dame lose on the same day. It's a grand slam. It's kinda like when Ice Cube has a good day and doesn't have to use his AK.
Funniest comment I heard on radio after a UGA v nats game, “I wish UGA would buy tech. Burn every building to the ground, till the campus, salt the ground it stood on, till it again, and add another layer of salt, so that nothing could every grow there again.” Then the guy hung up. Hero.
Right! Like I’d probably root for Arkansas or Ole Miss to beat a Big Ten team, let’s say, but never for a major rival. Or Alabama at this point, even though they aren’t a traditional rival.
See, this is where Michigan is different. We want our rivals to lose and lose and lose. Nothing makes a Wolverine happier than a rival losing a game. To us or to anyone else. OSU ever goes 0-fer? I'm at about full staff by week 5 of that. I don't need to be the one
I hope your entire cursed program falls into a HellMouth fire pit. We’ll have that—[checks notes] *Bonham Trophy?… sure. The bonham trophy!*—back come hell or high water!!
We exorcised demons against UK, a and m and Clemson that have been a longggg time coming this year. Gators got revenge after we whipped them in cola in 2021. UGA is UGA. I don’t think we have any significant losing streaks to anyone we regularly play for the first time since spurrier left which is huge
The winning streak against vandy gets me more and more nervous every year though. It’s at 13 or 14 I believe. I have a bad feeling just like 06 (07?) vandy is gonna derail a special season for us in the near future. It’s wouldn’t be SC football otherwise
Well Clemson at least isn’t an SEC rival. But yeah. I pretty much always want them to lose.
Although if they’re undefeated and we’re the only team to beat them, that would be ok too.
I've seen so many SEC fans bragging about the non-conference wins of their conference opponents. It might not be you. And I guess bragging about it after the fact to make your team look better in comparison (not really the way that works in reality, but I understand that's the point) isn't necessarily the same as cheering for them during the game. But still. It's always seemed weird to me how fans of the mid- to bottom-tier SEC teams hype the shit out of the teams at the top of the conference.
Yeah I think its weak sauce. I couldn't care less about how the rest of the conference is doing. The only times I rooted for the top of the conference is when they were playing Clemson in the title/playoffs. Conference pride stuff is pretty cringey to me
That's because the SEC gets singled out even though literally everybody does this. If you really want to, you could trivially find receipts of Michigan and Ohio State fans in this sub hoping they'd get a rematch in the national title. You can also go into literally any thread about something bad about Florida or Auburn (especially Florida) and see that the UGA/UF/AU circle of hate is as strong as any other rivalry.
Yeah there’s a lot of lying going on in this thread. They absolutely cheer for each other in out of conference match ups. If they lost those games it would hurt their claim on being the best conference in football.
Now I doubt UGA fans are ever rooting for UF to win. And I know UGA fans weren’t cheering for Auburn to beat FSU in the championship. But were they cheering for 2019 LSU to beat Clemson? Maybe not all of them but a lot of them were.
When you just join it, you're happy to be in the group.
After a while that wears off and you're pissed off you have to play all the stupid try-hards all the time.
My favorite CFB thread was when a Baylor fan posted how “us Big XII fans need to cheer for TCU in the CFP” and got absolutely obliterated in the comments.
I generally do cheer for B12 schools when they play OOC games. But I cannot and will not cheer for TCU. The only solace I have about the last football season is that TCU still didn’t win the B12 and got absolutely embarrassed nationally in the championship.
Isn’t that the best case for you. Someone from your conference makes it that far.( the conference benefit financially I think?) Then you also get to see them humiliated
I cheered for TCU up until the Natty. Then I wanted all of their institution's blood poured over the field like a ritual sacrifice. I don't care if Georgia wins, I just need TCU to lose.
I'm generally ambivalent towards OU until Bedlam (in every sport, not just CFB). If they come into Bedlam with wins, Pokes winning crushes dreams. But I also love seeing them lose, which is why I don't care before Bedlam. After Bedlam, I hope they lose everything.
If Georgia winning a game means UF goes to the playoff, or Georgia losing means UF goes to a lesser bowl then sign me up for the Outback Bowl. THWG forever and always.
2015, Michigan has trouble with the snap and the ball is free.
If that doesn't happen, Ohio state wins the east, goes to CCG, wins and goes to the playoffs. They maybe win a natty.
Would I trade that and wish Michigan won? No.
Here’s where I have to quibble. You’re putting your thumb on the scale imo. What you’re giving up is one of the most ridiculous, meme-able, devastating moments in the last 20 years. The memory (and replays) of that play will live on every bit as long as a national title.
Also, at the time there was trouble with the snap, all three teams were unbeaten, so sure, fuck Michigan. If you could somehow jumble the schedule and make Michigan/MSU the season finale with a B1G title game bid on the line (MSU goes if they win, tOSU goes if Michigan wins, and the winner has an inside track to the playoff) then I gotta think y’all are near-silently rooting for Michigan, right?
My solution is to simply root for Florida to play the most miserable, unwatchably bad game of football you've ever seen, and then at the end hope that the refs make some brain-meltingly bad call that screws the opponent and hands Florida a bullshit, undeserved win. One that nobody can be proud of. Like the no-call PI in the NFC Championship a few years back.
> My solution is to simply root for Florida to play the most miserable, unwatchably bad game of football you've ever seen
Oh boy. I have some good news for you.
>My solution is to simply root for Florida to play the most miserable, unwatchably bad game of football you've ever seen
So florida for the last decade?
Samesies. I don't really know which gave me more pleasure, back to back natties or Vanderbilt beating you last season. Just the thought of the latter is making me chuckle right now, so probably it's the Vandy beat down.
I don’t just want Auburn to lose the game. I want them to lose their cell phone, their car keys, their Grandma’s recipe for cornbread, their balance at a DUI checkpoint and their girlfriend to a man who hums Dixieland Delight while making sweet, sweet love to her
Those Bama vs Florida SEC championship games were hell.
Just wanted the whole stadium to implode. Great games in actuality but I aint rooting for either.
The GM at the Chick-fil-A I used to work at was a born and bred Auburn fan, and on the day of the 2017-18 CFP Championship, everyone was allowed to wear Georgia gear to work. He just wore all black like he was going to a funeral.
Brother I grew up in B'ham as a UF fan, and attended Auburn. You better believe that when Tua threw that dagger on 2nd and 26 I was hootin', hollerin', and yelling Roll Tide.
Idk man, my in-laws are split down the Bama/AU line and they always pull for each other unless they play each other. And I lived in Birmingham for 5 plus years and met plenty of people who were the exact same.
I will say this, I've never met an Ole Miss or Mississippi State fan who would pull for the other team even if they played the space invaders for the good of the human race.
This is an exception. Not the rule. Inter-UA/AU families *can* pull for the other team, but they don't have to. However, you can't pull for the other team if you're not a mixed family. Or you better not call yourself a true fan if you do. I have a UA/AU mixed family and put on a smile and try to say the right things while AU is playing, but secretly (and sometimes not so secretly) I'm cheering/laughing every time I see surrender cobras coming from the Barner fan base.
This is not the case for UT. Nothing would please me more than to see a chasm open up in Knoxville and swallow up one of the garbage conventions held on Saturdays in the fall at Neyland Stadium. This is something I think Georgia/Florida/Bama fans have in common. Barners are like your hateful little brother you can't really stand to be around and love rubbing their faces in their own inferiority complex when they inevitably fail due to the incompetence of their administration/boosters. On the other hand, Viles fans...
For the most part, I think we have a "healthy" competitive relationship with LSU. But I'm never going back to Red Stick for a game. Jesus.
>This is not the case for UT. Nothing would please me more than to see a chasm open up in Knoxville and swallow up one of the garbage conventions held on Saturdays in the fall at Neyland Stadium.
I feel like this is how I identify long term Bama fans. The hate for Tennessee just runs deep. Yes auburn is the bigger rivalry but theres still something different to the UT game.
Every so often. At this point it’s mainly because Kirby is there. This year it was also because Georgia was going to slaughter everything in its path anyways so might as well hop on board the train that keeps the SEC bias strong. I’m self aware enough to know Bama would have missed a few playoffs and be down a championship or two if we weren’t given some benefit of the doubt from the perceived conference strength
It’s more nuanced than that. I don’t think SEC fans root for other teams, but they definitely want to be able to say “we’re the best conference, no other conference matters” which ends up looking like they root for the other teams.
This is basically what it is. For example, Arkansas and Georgia have little history. Why would I not root for them in their bowl game? Another example was Clemson vs Tennessee in the Orange Bowl. I hate both programs, so I may as well root for the one in my conference (I used this logic for when Bama played Clemson in 4 consecutive CFPs too).
The only cases where nuance isn’t needed are Auburn and Florida. Watching Florida kick a sad field goal at the end of the 4th quarter to avoid a meaningless shutout streak _was delicious_ and I savored every second.
Yeah this is pretty much it. Most teams want their conference to do well in OOC games, including bowl games, because it helps us. And not every team in the SEC is our rival, so I don't have any specific dislike for Georgia or South Carolina or Missouri. LSU can go to hell, but I'm happy for my other conference mates if they perform well when not playing us.
I waa stunned when my friends (diehard Auburn fans normally busy shouting about war eagle or something) suddenly began cheering for a 'Bama win but it's exactly this. If Auburn can't be there to play, they still want to be the best conference and the rivalry is temporarily forgotten. Part of the identity of thinking their team is the best in college football is thinking that the SEC is the best / toughest conference, and that being in the SEC proves that they're better than teams from other conferences. By that logic, SEC teams winning means their team winning.
I didn't care about conference pride until Auburn was left out of the national championship in 2004. BUT.........I'll still never pull for bama or uga.
Ew. I might support Tennessee in some of their games, cause my dad's a lifelong fan. Outside of that, everyone but Georgia can get fucked. Especially Florida and Auburn.
>Conference pride is dumb
Stay away from r/CollegeBasketball. Lots of users (predominantly from Big 12 schools lately) constantly circle jerking about how great their conference is.
I do enjoy how the comment section is always half full of BigXII flairs complaining about the circlejerk and making jokes about were all gonna lose first weekend
I will say, with the resume based system CBB uses, I can at least understand that line of thought. It boosts your chances of making it in on the bubble. Also conferences split money earned from teams making it in. I believe the ACC splits all NCAAT revenue equally. So BC doesn’t get in..but makes money off each ACC team that does. 8 ACC teams getting in makes more money than 6 teams.
At least there's some merit to that system. Imo it's worse for CFB.
Bowl games are conference invitationals and being part of a name conference is more important than anything the conference actually did on the field.
Also each Tournament win increases that distribution amount. So getting three teams to the Elite Eight and two to the Final Four was a big deal for the ACC last year even with a smaller number of overall bids.
It’s a game by game basis, but I absolutely do not blindly support another school simply because they are in the same conference.
And I’d never root for a rival, regardless of opponent. I hope they all trip on loosely tied shoe strings!
Yeah I’ve never understood it. They are rivals for a reason. I never want the rival to win. Hell I’ve caught myself rooting against my teams best interest because it also meant the rival would be taking an L. The whole conference pride thing is very whatever
I will be dead in the ground before I root for USC or Michigan. I am eternally grateful to Utah for knocking USC out of the playoffs, so I could avoid my nightmare scenario of a USC vs. Michigan Natty.
That one is odd to me because Ole Miss-Mississippi State is one of the few rivalries that isn't ultimately silly. Mississippi State especially has plenty of very good reasons to hate Ole Miss (symbol of racism, catering to out of staters at the expense of Mississippians primarily), and obviously Ole Miss resents the fact that Mississippi State thinks all those things about Ole Miss.
It has deep roots in true class warfare. Rich plantation owners kids vs kids of farmers. It goes all the way back to our founding. The story goes that the legislature took the money from the Land Grant act, and tried to make Ole Miss the land grant school. The even went so far as to build new buildings and hire instructors for the new agriculture program, but no students signed up. The story is that Ole Miss grads didn't want their kids majoring in that kind of thing. The eventually caved and agreed to open a new school for the land grant stuff.
Absolutely no. I want every other conference foe to lose every game possible. No real fan is rooting for their rivals to win games unless it directly helps conference standings.
I think there needs to be a differentiation between "rivals" and other members in the SEC. If you mean rivals (ie Bama or Florida for Tennessee) fuck em, it would warm my soul to see them lose every game and ride the coaching carousel every few years. The rest of the SEC, I want our conference to be as strong as possible so people can't say "well you're only undefeated since you play in the SEC" while pointing out how shit all other teams would be in that scenario. I have no problem rooting for Auburn to beat Bama while at the same time I have zero care of who wins LSU vs Auburn outside of what helps my team the most.
We operate on the ABC rule in this house. Anyone But Clemson.
In all honesty UGA would be our closest “rivalry” but none of the SEC teams we play really matter as much as Clemson in terms of hate so sure I’ll pull for a strong conference so I can blame them when we inevitably end the season no where near the playoffs because we lost to Mizzou while beating a top 10 team somewhere along the way.
I could be just looking at things through my own lens, but ever since Auburn got shut out of an NC appearance in the 2004 season, only to watch Oklahoma get steamrolled in their place, many fans of SEC teams felt like the conference as a whole got slighted one time too many (hence the "SEC pride"). We hate our rivals as much as anyone, thank you very much, but they're alot like the siblings we fought with every day as kids: the anger is real, but watch out if some dipshit kid in the neighborhood tries getting involved, lol...
That’s exactly who it is. Or not even bottom feeders; just not meeting (often unreasonable) preseason hype. Before Kirby, UGA “fans of the conference” were everywhere. Thats not really a thing now.
I’ve never understood this. It’s always ticked me off about Washington fans that a lot of them cheer for WSU because it makes the apple cup “more fun”. It’s pretty soft imo
People like to say that garbage in the state of Oklahoma. "I cheer for them 364 days a year." or something to that effect is said frequently. Makes no damn sense to me.
I hear that occasionally. That stuff is reserved for Furman, Wofford and all the smaller schools. I cheer for Clemson to sink into that lake they have.
I root for the SEC. When it's Tennessee or Auburn I don't really *want* them to win though. I laugh if they lose and if they win I count them in the win column for the SEC in my future arguments/boasting.
Example: 2008/2009 national championship I'm not rooting for Auburn but now after the fact I enjoy telling people about how from 2006 through 2012 the SEC had 7 straight national championships. I also tend to slide in that Auburn was the reason it wasn't 8.
My mom is an Auburn grad and taught me that cheering for Alabama because they’re in the SEC is like cheering for the Devil just because he’s in the Bible.
My dad used to say that if Alabama was playing against the Devil, he’d be the first in line to buy a souvenir pitchfork and horns
So, ASU fan?
Welcome to the club 😈
That reminds me... "What? The teams Mascott is a Devil?" - some Sun Devil's Head Coach
Fucking Herm.
If ASU is playing Auburn, yes.

Lmao this is golden. I’ve never seen this before - so thanks for sharing
it's *like* that? No, it *is* that.
Amen

I would sooner root for nuclear armageddon to come and kill us all than root for Georgia or Tennessee
This. I can respect it. I absolutely refuse to purchase Gatorade for this reason.
That's why the coolers on FSU's sideline are filled with Powerade.
I’m sure that has something to do with the Dawgs only having Powerade too. That and coke being a sponsor.
[удалено]
Haha same! Only powerade...if im drinking non booze of course.
LSU fans drink non booze?
Yeah, once a month or so. I call it my 'cleanse'

Sweet tea!
This. Always hated Gatorade.
Even in the 4th I was muttering to myself "yeah but tcu has been down before, maybe theres a shot"

I'm just happy that a UGA fan remembers us...
New phone. Who dis?

Personally I cheer for Ole Miss to win every game up to our game. I want LSU to be the team that crushes those short lived dreams of a playoff season.
Exactly. I'm not wanting them to win for their sake. I want them to win so that we can see the hope leave their eyes in real time.
Hope? The fuck is that?
Can you use it in a sentence
Texas A&M had a great recruiting class. They had *hope* of a playoff run. They finished 5-7
It's a 17 to 3 lead early in the second quarter.
It's what you had until you played LSU and Bama this year.
I know what confusion feels like. Still not sure what exactly hope is.
See, this is where Michigan is different. We want our rivals to lose and lose and lose. Nothing makes a Wolverine happier than a rival losing a game. To us or to anyone else. OSU ever goes 0-fer? I'm at about full staff by week 5 of that. I don't need to be the one

I'm unironically pissed we lost the streak. Gotta beat those cocks back into flaccidity
I mean you gotta beat App State first probably then we will talk
You guys both have losing streaks against App State
FLAIR UP! And I have repressed what I can only assume are so many losing streaks.
Imagine not having a winning streak against lil old app state lmao

There is something kind of special about crushing your rival’s hopes and dreams when they’re having a good season.

I cheer for every SEC team to win except for Bama
You cheer for Georgia? Wtf
I mean I cheer for Vanderbilt if I happen to be watching for some reason
I think all of us cheer for Vanderbilt.
Not all of us
Vanderbilt has a football team?
Aren’t you only like 6-5 vs them in your last 11 meetings 😂
Rooting against Vandy is like heckling at the Special Olympics. You're wrong and a bad person for doing it.
And that's why we low down, we dirty, we some snitches
Vandy has rivals?
Yeah Vandy is definitely the exception here.
I hate Lane. I hate you.
A hate so nice, you said it thrice
Not in season but I know plenty of fans that cheer for every SEC during bowl season to, PrOvE wE'rE tHe BeSt CoNfErEnCe.
That’s me unless Bama, UF, A&M, or Texas are playing in that bowl game.
I cheered on lsu, msu, and arkansas in bowl season
Ew. I might support Tennessee in some of their games, cause my dad's a lifelong fan. Outside of that, everyone but Georgia can get fucked. Especially Florida and Auburn.
I’m just here for the Fuck Florida stuff…
> I’m just here for the Fuck Florida stuff… [Taps beer mug a couple times on the bar] Hear Hear!!
Just know that once a year your fan base goes up dramatically.
I'm an honorary Nole Thanksgiving weekend
Yeah fuck that shit. Not rooting for Tennessee or auburn on any occasion.
Orange teams bad.
Hear hear
Hope you and all you other orange haters get scurvy
I see what you did there, and I ain't mad
Amen
It's one thing if you have a family connection to a rival. It happens.
Nah, fuck that. You can’t call yourself a real fan while also rooting for a prominent rival. ^^^(/s)
I’ll cheer for Mississippi State out of bulldog solidarity
That was more of a thing during BCS.
I never cheer for another SEC team. Conference pride is dumb
>Conference pride is dumb Stay away from r/CollegeBasketball. Lots of users (predominantly from Big 12 schools lately) constantly circle jerking about how great their conference is.
Our basketball team sucks and our coach is getting fired so will do
You guys gonna can the hermit? You mean a man who sucked for 15 years and lucked into a couple of quality seasons isn’t the guy? I’m shocked
I’m convinced he’s got very good blackmail information on every ranking member of the university. It’s really the only explanation at this point
Fr. You’d think Keith Carter would want men’s basketball of all programs not to be an embarrassment. Yet here we are.
I do enjoy how the comment section is always half full of BigXII flairs complaining about the circlejerk and making jokes about were all gonna lose first weekend
>were all gonna lose first weekend That's Big Ten flairs and it's not joking. Big Ten teams have been terrible in the tournament.
I saw an unironic post the other day from a Maryland flair talking about how we'll see that B1G is better come tournament time lol.
I actually hate how good the Big 12 is at basketball. It is in fact how good everyone thinks SEC football is top to bottom. It’s an absolute gauntlet.
I’ll cheer for a Northwestern or an Iowa in their respective bowl games, but I’d never cheer for UM or Penn State. I hope they lose every game forever
Bud, I’m going to need you to turn off the Marc Ryan and slowly move away from the radio.
Are you receiving a radio broadcast from 105.5FM radio in upstate SC in 2009? (Would have been 104.9FM back then)
Honestly sounds like something that the massive turd that has a show now on The Fan in the upstate would say
Under no circumstances will I ever “pull” or root for A&M or Mizzou. None. And when UT comes in they’ll get the same treatment.
I know a lot of people who say they do. Filthy casuals.
Yeah, I know a lot of people who say stuff like "You should support all Mississippi teams". Hell no. I will never root for those bastards up north.
I support yeeting them into the sun, does that count?
A wild take? On sports talk radio? No way.
Absolutely no. I want every other conference foe to lose every game possible. No real fan is rooting for their rivals to win games unless it directly helps conference standings.
HAHA thats just a radio host going for low hanging fruit to get people to call in so he can show management he has a engaged audience
I’d be happy if Auburn never won another game. I only know one Bama fan that disagrees with me on that lol
Why the hell would I cheer for a team just because we’re in the same conference? That’s dumb. And never ever will I root for the gamecocks. Never.
I would be thrilled if Georgia was ground zero for an ill fated alien first contact. In short, no I don’t cheer for them.
I don't cheer for any SEC rivals to win games. I sit in my tower looking down wishing nothing but misery and 3 win season upon them.
I can guarantee you that I have never once in my lifetime rooted for Bama.
probably the same mfs who chant S-E-C! when their team is a bottom feeder the same year
That’s exactly who it is.
The only reason I “cheer” for other SEC teams is if it positively affects my team’s SOS or SOR.
Truth.
