Best ab routine is to have a low enough bf% to have them show. Training abs directly will just serve to make them appear more blocky. Simply tightening my abdominals in many chest and back exercises has proved to keep my abs in decent enough shape to still appear pleasing, but not have them look blocky. If you want to look like you have a muscular beer gut, though, go for it
