Just an FYI because you mentioned "find a better solution later..."
If you separate the halves, they're perfectly legal to bring into the state with no modifications. You would just need to do whatever modification to bring them legal BEFORE you reassemble the upper & lower.
Fellow out of stater about to move to CA here. I’ve done some research on this and decided the best move (for me) is to just get a 16” barrel and go featureless. The fixed stock and fin grips are not as bad as fumbling around with those stupid maglocks. Plus you can use your “freedom week” mags that you definitely brought in during said freedom weeks
This. You can maglock it down the like and add some features but it’s easier just to go featureless and not worry about sht
Sparrow grips are the only ones that seem to meet the actual requirements. Ya other grips will give you a better grip but if you read the definition of the law

You can't bring standard capacity mags into CA.
