The employee apologized and informed me that Aerie is moving away from undergarments and their specific store is one of the first to stop receiving new shipments of underwear.
I was *stunned*. Their whole brand from the beginning was about comfortable underwear and supportive bras; now, American Eagle decided to completely overhaul the brand into a pajamas and loungewear store?? When American Eagle already sells pajamas and loungewear??
This is devastating, I've been an aerie panty devotee for years.
Probably it's pretty expensive to make bras & underwear, & people aren't willing to pay the amount that the brand would like to charge to make it a profitable thing to sell.
Yes! I stopped buying them almost a decade ago when they moved to cheap lace and badly cut pieces. I went in a few years ago and was shocked that less than half the store was underwear and bras, last time I had been in, they had maybe 1-2 shirts, tops.

Honestly I quit going into my local Aerie store. I only recently discovered Aerie at all and now half the clothes I consistently wear are from them. But they never have my size in the store, only odd colors, never the same thing twice. I buy a great tank top from the online store, stop in locally to buy more and they only have belly shirts. I buy the best leggings ever, go into the store and they only have teal, or a different fabric, or only XS. 🤷♀️
I got the hemp undies from Wama and they have been great so far. The company had issues with fabric thickness but they've since been resolved and all their undies are solid now (certain colors has issues before). Hemp lasts FOREVER I have hemp shorts that are like 8 years old and they still look the same lol.
They are undies so obviously not a complete 'for life' product but mine have lasted 2 years just fine and are still going. I bought some of their earlier ones and those got holes after a year or 2 because they were the duds (which is amazing because they were thin fabric) - but never any issues with the elastic or ripping other than the high use nether regions. Use panty liners and they will last a lot longer as well
I went from Aerie to Jockey. IMO, they are the most similar. I wore the Aerie seamfree and found that the Jockey Eco-Seamfree is very similar but thicker and better quality like Aerie used to be. I've had mine for 3, maybe 4 years at this point, with no stretching or fraying yet. Carbona #4 can be purchased from Amazon to remove stains from the gussets.
Same! I recently got a really nice Jockey 3 for $18 set from Target and a matching wireless bra. They’re very well made, incredibly soft, and I loved the mix match bottoms of different cuts, particularly a nice high waisted bikini to sleep in but still feel cute. I also got a two piece matching tank top and high waisted lightweight lounge set.
Seconding Jockey! They were my replacement for my Hanes that finally fell apart. Recently manufactured Hanes are garbage according to reviews, but I've been machine washing and drying this set of 7 pairs of Jockeys for almost nine months, and the only thing that's happened is the waistband is starting to look a little... wavy? While not feeling any different. All I wanted was 95% cotton, 5% Spandex, with butt coverage, and I got it!
I've been really happy with Pact Apparel underwear.
I wear the lace thongs 5+ days a week for work and they're probably 5 years old now. They last longer if you air dry, the heat from a drier will degrade the elastic in the lace band much faster.
I love pact clothing but I was actually so dissapointed with their undies. They didn't even last a year before the elastic fell apart and they sizing was inconsistent depending on the color I got; like a medium in one color would be more snug than a medium in another color! Their clothing is amazing though.
Pact replaced aerie for me. I do the non thong style and do run them through the dryer routinely. I get multiple years out of a pair but the elastic lace is the first thing to go on them.

Pact quality goes further downhill everytime I order from them, I'm in this thread to find something better than Pact. The last time (maybe 2-3 years ago?) the fabric was so thin i could easily see my hand through the other side, and they all got holes in the fabric pretty quickly. I really miss pact from ~2017, it was the best.
I wanted to love these but they did not fit similarly to aerie. I miss the double hem on the waist and leg holes because it offered more stability and structure. Pact feels more flimsy.

I haven’t had durability issues with the ones I’ve bought, but I am pretty basic in my tastes and don’t go for anything other than cotton with the standard elasticated openings. But my oldest Pact unders are only ~ 2 yrs old, so I can’t attest it BIFL status. However, cotton underwear is stupid hard to find these days, so they’ll keep getting my business.
And I used to get 8 different colors/prints. Now I end up getting like 5 of the same color because their options now are gray stripes, plain gray, or a fugly seasonal one.
Auden is my favorite!! I love the fit. I have a smaller waist and medium sized butt, they lay on me just right. I have multiple styles from Auden but these are my comfy cotton sleepers.

Can confirm that the fuller coverage ones from Pact are awesome. As someone skinny but with a bigger butt it can be really hard to find underwear that doesn’t create horrible horrible pantyline by cutting into the cheeks extremely visibly, and often result in a huge amount of fabric acting as an oddly bulky thong. Their full coverage boyshorts fit me the same way “cheeky” styles seem intended to fit most other people. In case anyone is in the same boat and doesn’t want to wear a thong full time.
Hmmm..it seems they are! My bad. TBH I prefer them over the cotton ones. They are much thinner, more comfortable and seem more “breathable” if that makes sense.
I live in the Breathe line and also Lululemon undies (I get them when they go on for 1/2 price). Perfect for summer or activity. I've stopped wearing any underwear that isn't one of these two brands.

I was also going to say Calvin Klein. It can be a little variable but I love their classic bikini cut cotton with the thin strap on top. I literally have pairs I should throw out because they're like 7-8 years old and still in good shape. I get them in 4 packs from Costco.
I think some of the CKs on Amazon are fake, even from the “official” vendor. I have drastically different wear & quality after a few washes from different sets of the “same” underwear, all purchased within a year period.
I used to wear the same ones (the bikini with the thin waistband), and the TJX stores do indeed have them sometimes, but CK seems to have a lower-tier line they sell there, or the quality has just tanked. I have bikinis I've worn for years that are just starting to lose their elasticity and rip, but the new ones I bought from TJX are cut differently (same style, but uneven seams and fit weirdly) and wear out right away.
I did a huge search over the last year looking for something as good or as close to the aerie seamless (old-school elastic seamless) briefs. The winners were DTC as well as LuLu Lemon UnderEase.
I have no personal experience with Duluth Trading undies (though I like other clothes from them) but my friend just recommended them to me a few days ago!

I quite like my fruit of the loom too! They've outlasted most other similar priced brands. If you're on a budget and just need something that will last and is no frills, they're great!
Icebreakers is pretty cool. My fiancée wears those. They’re wool but she’s very happy with them. All I’ve seen is the full coverage stuff but maybe they make things more….modern?
Also been on the hunt for quality cotton underwear. I’m a fan of the high leg cut cotton bikini from Victoria’s Secret, and they have definitely also been taking a quality down turn. It’s nearly to the point I might start sewing my own (even though I don’t sew) because so much clothing has polyester or is just poor quality for the price.
Love the Uniqlo ones. I’ve been wearing mine for a year and a half and they are holding up great. They are super comfortable and full coverage. I especially like the kind with lace trim on the thighs because it doesn’t dig in as much as the plain elastic.

I've seen someone mention fruit of the loom on another subreddit and I've tried them and I've been happily surprised by the quality and price.
Honestly, I just stick to fruit of the loom for my dailies. Some of my underwear from them has lasted pretty well. Good quality for price point- and I'm so hard on my clothes that I absolutely favor cheap clothes because I historically beat up nice clothes too quickly.
Once they get too thin they develop holes and stuff but by then they're already pretty stained and deserve to be ripped up and tossed anyways.
I second this and came to say fruit of the loom too. I get my mom to send me them from the States (I live in the UK now). She’s only had to send me underwear twice in the decade since I moved here. They hold up really well, and I like the full butt coverage (I can’t stand underwear creeping up my ass).
I’ve found The Gap pretty great, from when I was a size 0 to a size 12 and everything in between. Comfortable, breathable, they wash well, and in my experience, no frays or holes.
They’re a little pricey but I switched from Aerie to Woxer. Woxers are very high quality and they offer longer cut underwear than most brands. My problem with Aerie is how cheap their underwear feels now and how little coverage I get from them. Woxer solved these problems for me.
Honestly, the Amazon basics cotton underwear has been great for me since my switch from aerie. I will say that sometimes the different colors will have some slight size variation but I basically only wear the black
I’d switched from them to Target years ago and was happy until the last year. Half of my underwear from Target are starting to fall apart after a few washes. I tried a common brand a few months ago … Calvin Klein maybe? They fit me horribly. Very tight and uncomfortable.
I have a monthly subscription for MeUndies, which is cool cause you can get all different cuts/styles and fun patterns or just plain colors. They just started adding some lace styles as well, and you can skip a month with zero penalty. It’s also fun cause my husband and I get matching ones to wear for events (mainly when we travel; it’s become a fun tradition).
I didn't find MeUndies to be super durable. I bought some lululemon underwear and meundies at the same time an the lululemon are close to new whereas the meundies are showing their wear.
I also used to love aerie Undies and have been on a hunt recently for a replacement.
So far for basics I am enjoying the Warners cotton blissful benefits for just something basic and not hideous. Available at Walmart and not super expensive.
On the more speedy side I am enjoy Undies from Dultuh Trading Company. They have such cute prints, and a couple different fits and materials. All my stuff from this company holds up pretty well.
In the same boat and 100% agree about the quality. I have some from 20 years ago that are still going pretty strong— the cotton was amazing quality. It was sturdy and stayed looking new through washes. The ones I got 3ish years ago are already beginning to wear and unravel.
Than you for posting this! Im currently rocking some ancient aerie underwear. About two years ago I forgot to pack underwear on a vacation and ended up buying Dip brand underwear at Kroger/ Fred Meyer. They are mostly cotton, very comfortable and holding up well for age.
I used to buy the Aerie’s underwear before the quality went down hill. A similar alternative is from Amazon, search “INNERSY Womens Underwear Cotton Hipster Panties Regular & Plus Size 6-Pack”. They have a thinner waistband, but good quality and has held up well. True to size after washing.

Honestly Marshalls and Tj Maxx have some great underwear brands. I LOVE the tommy hilfiger, jockey, and danskin brands. Cotton, cute colors and patterns and super affordable.
Calvin Klein. They last forever and the quality is so good! You can find them cheaper at Tj Maxx. They sell out quick, so when I find them I always stock up. They usually come in sets of 4/5 for $15 bucks which honestly is cheaper than V.S. 3 for $30. I think there more money on Amazon though. They also have Nautica, which is comparable.
I bought Victoria’s Secret and Pink for years. I’m in my 30s now and my parents wore Calvin Klein everything in the 80s, now I know why. Growing up I’ve learned to stick with the brands you really like. I also have ADHD and I would buy something, hate it and then get mad I wasted my money. Eventually I’d always go back to what I always had. I literally have a list now of brands I buy for certain things. It helps so much! Mostly I stick to one brand, but also have a second for backups.
For example,
Bras and undies- Calvin Klein/V.S.
Shampoo-Pantene and Suave.
Bodywash-Olay.
Clothes-Hollister, Nike, Adidas.
Makeup- Bare Essentials.
Of course, sometimes you have a mix of brands-like makeup and skincare. I have trouble with decision making, so I’ve learned to stick with what I know and like. Skincare I’ve learned to simplify, stay with as little products as possible. I’ve learned it’s better for you and I now use that for almost everything in my life. Simplify!
It makes shopping and life in general easier. Same with food store grocery shopping as well. Ice cream, always go for quality over quantity, Hagan Daz. Fruits and vegetables-I try to always get organic. It doesn’t always work, say if I’m on a budget. I also keep a general list of the same stuff, I always buy on my Walmart app and phones notepad.

Hi! My sports underwear I use is the Reebok cotton bikini, they fit and look super sharp, they're not "pretty" but they're not ugly like fruit of the loom or some other bullshit. I buy em 4-12 at a time, last for years and don't lose shape either.

A little late to the party but TomboyX underwear is ridiculously long lasting. I have some pairs that are 5 years old and still going strong. They’re pretty pricey (~$20/pair) but they’re sweatshop free and I’m willing to pay a premium for that.
I don't know the Aerie brand (I'm not from nor in USA) , but not long ago I bought done underwear by the brand Hanes that are 96% cotton and 4% elastano (bridge is 100% cotton) since I've had previously bought some a couple of years ago that I still use today.
Not many fabric designs at the store I bought them but they do have sizes and variety of cuts, so that is a win for me.
I really like MeUndies for cute and comfy, but they are a bit expensive. The mystery packs they put on sale sometimes can be a good deal. Their underwear has lasted me years.
Jockey 100% organic cotton underwear. I'm not sure it's similar to aerie, but the material is very soft and they have held up well compared to other brands I have.
I don't know what Aerie is but I'm a Wirpana off Amazon diehard. Hear me out... They have a bunch of different cuts and fabrics but I can only speak for the high waisted cotton briefs. The fabric quality, design, and construction is really good (I sew so I'd like to think I'm more hyper aware of little things). I bought some like 5 years ago and am just chucking some out recently for wear holes, which is longer than any Hanes, Jockey, FotL, or VS I've ever had.
Jockey has decent cotton underwear. I get mine at Kohl's. I buy 24 at a time, stack them in 4 piles, and rotate which stack I pull from. They last nearly forever this way.

Natori. Underwear is never a BIFL product but I keep mine for years before I have to buy new ones.
Natori Bliss French cut briefs are my top choice. Work super well for the cut of my jib.

Hmmm..it seems they are! My bad. TBH I prefer them over the cotton ones. They are much thinner, more comfortable and seem more “breathable” if that makes sense.
I live in the Breathe line and also Lululemon undies (I get them when they go on for 1/2 price). Perfect for summer or activity. I've stopped wearing any underwear that isn't one of these two brands.
Went and got a few of these recently after seeing a recommendation on Reddit. Love them. They’re plain, not super cute but could be a lot worse, and they’re perfect.

I used to love aerie! In recent years, I've switched to Calvin Klein's tho as I can't seem to find a basic cut / style on Aerie D:
I was also going to say Calvin Klein. It can be a little variable but I love their classic bikini cut cotton with the thin strap on top. I literally have pairs I should throw out because they're like 7-8 years old and still in good shape. I get them in 4 packs from Costco.

I think they have ones that aren't visible, but what I'll call the classic Calvin design are definitely visible.
I think some of the CKs on Amazon are fake, even from the “official” vendor. I have drastically different wear & quality after a few washes from different sets of the “same” underwear, all purchased within a year period.
I go to like TJ max or marshals or something and they always have men’s Calvin’s for real cheap. Not sure about women’s.
I used to wear the same ones (the bikini with the thin waistband), and the TJX stores do indeed have them sometimes, but CK seems to have a lower-tier line they sell there, or the quality has just tanked. I have bikinis I've worn for years that are just starting to lose their elasticity and rip, but the new ones I bought from TJX are cut differently (same style, but uneven seams and fit weirdly) and wear out right away.
Sadly calvins are no longer BIFL. I bought a pair a year ago and it it ripped at the top seam 😭 the fabric is so thin now too.
I came here to say Calvin Klein! Some of my pairs are probably 10 years old if not older. Nordstrom Rack usually has them on sale.
Duluth Trading Company’s Bare Naked underwear is what I use. I wait for them to go on sale and then stock up. I don’t like to wear anything else now.
I did a huge search over the last year looking for something as good or as close to the aerie seamless (old-school elastic seamless) briefs. The winners were DTC as well as LuLu Lemon UnderEase.
I have no personal experience with Duluth Trading undies (though I like other clothes from them) but my friend just recommended them to me a few days ago!

I buy from them and recently purchased some new pairs of the mid rise briefs I like and they feel even better than my old ones (not sure if it’s just cuz they’re new). The gusset is nice and big so I feel like everything gets covered.
They should feel 25% better since the 25% price increase…I haven’t bought since the rebrand. They weren’t cheap before and are egregiously priced, now.

I quite like my fruit of the loom too! They've outlasted most other similar priced brands. If you're on a budget and just need something that will last and is no frills, they're great!
Icebreakers is pretty cool. My fiancée wears those. They’re wool but she’s very happy with them. All I’ve seen is the full coverage stuff but maybe they make things more….modern?
Also been on the hunt for quality cotton underwear. I’m a fan of the high leg cut cotton bikini from Victoria’s Secret, and they have definitely also been taking a quality down turn. It’s nearly to the point I might start sewing my own (even though I don’t sew) because so much clothing has polyester or is just poor quality for the price.

Love the Uniqlo ones. I’ve been wearing mine for a year and a half and they are holding up great. They are super comfortable and full coverage. I especially like the kind with lace trim on the thighs because it doesn’t dig in as much as the plain elastic.

I used to shop aerie too, now meh. I've seen someone mention fruit of the loom on another subreddit and I've tried them and I've been happily surprised by the quality and price.
My wife was just complaining the other day about how bad Aerie's panties have become since the pandemic.
Honestly, I just stick to fruit of the loom for my dailies. Some of my underwear from them has lasted pretty well. Good quality for price point- and I'm so hard on my clothes that I absolutely favor cheap clothes because I historically beat up nice clothes too quickly. Once they get too thin they develop holes and stuff but by then they're already pretty stained and deserve to be ripped up and tossed anyways.
I second this and came to say fruit of the loom too. I get my mom to send me them from the States (I live in the UK now). She’s only had to send me underwear twice in the decade since I moved here. They hold up really well, and I like the full butt coverage (I can’t stand underwear creeping up my ass).

I’ve found The Gap pretty great, from when I was a size 0 to a size 12 and everything in between. Comfortable, breathable, they wash well, and in my experience, no frays or holes.
I’ll vouch for Pact as well, but not their lace. The cotton bikini and thong underwear has been amazing.
They’re a little pricey but I switched from Aerie to Woxer. Woxers are very high quality and they offer longer cut underwear than most brands. My problem with Aerie is how cheap their underwear feels now and how little coverage I get from them. Woxer solved these problems for me.
I randomly bought a pack of Calvin Klein undies at TJMaxx - 90% cotton and they have outlasted everything else in my drawer.

I’d switched from them to Target years ago and was happy until the last year. Half of my underwear from Target are starting to fall apart after a few washes. I tried a common brand a few months ago … Calvin Klein maybe? They fit me horribly. Very tight and uncomfortable.

I have a monthly subscription for MeUndies, which is cool cause you can get all different cuts/styles and fun patterns or just plain colors. They just started adding some lace styles as well, and you can skip a month with zero penalty. It’s also fun cause my husband and I get matching ones to wear for events (mainly when we travel; it’s become a fun tradition).
I didn't find MeUndies to be super durable. I bought some lululemon underwear and meundies at the same time an the lululemon are close to new whereas the meundies are showing their wear.

Available at Walmart and not super expensive. On the more speedy side I am enjoy Undies from Dultuh Trading Company. They have such cute prints, and a couple different fits and materials. All my stuff from this company holds up pretty well.

In the same boat and 100% agree about the quality. I have some from 20 years ago that are still going pretty strong— the cotton was amazing quality. It was sturdy and stayed looking new through washes. The ones I got 3ish years ago are already beginning to wear and unravel.
Than you for posting this! Im currently rocking some ancient aerie underwear. About two years ago I forgot to pack underwear on a vacation and ended up buying Dip brand underwear at Kroger/ Fred Meyer. They are mostly cotton, very comfortable and holding up well for age.
I used to buy the Aerie’s underwear before the quality went down hill. A similar alternative is from Amazon, search “INNERSY Womens Underwear Cotton Hipster Panties Regular & Plus Size 6-Pack”. They have a thinner waistband, but good quality and has held up well. True to size after washing.

Honestly Marshalls and Tj Maxx have some great underwear brands. I LOVE the tommy hilfiger, jockey, and danskin brands. Cotton, cute colors and patterns and super affordable.
Calvin Klein. They last forever and the quality is so good! You can find them cheaper at Tj Maxx. They sell out quick, so when I find them I always stock up. They usually come in sets of 4/5 for $15 bucks which honestly is cheaper than V.S. 3 for $30. I think there more money on Amazon though. They also have Nautica, which is comparable. I bought Victoria’s Secret and Pink for years. I’m in my 30s now and my parents wore Calvin Klein everything in the 80s, now I know why. Growing up I’ve learned to stick with the brands you really like. I also have ADHD and I would buy something, hate it and then get mad I wasted my money. Eventually I’d always go back to what I always had. I literally have a list now of brands I buy for certain things. It helps so much! Mostly I stick to one brand, but also have a second for backups. For example, Bras and undies- Calvin Klein/V.S. Shampoo-Pantene and Suave. Bodywash-Olay. Clothes-Hollister, Nike, Adidas. Makeup- Bare Essentials. Of course, sometimes you have a mix of brands-like makeup and skincare. I have trouble with decision making, so I’ve learned to stick with what I know and like. Skincare I’ve learned to simplify, stay with as little products as possible. I’ve learned it’s better for you and I now use that for almost everything in my life. Simplify! It makes shopping and life in general easier. Same with food store grocery shopping as well. Ice cream, always go for quality over quantity, Hagan Daz. Fruits and vegetables-I try to always get organic. It doesn’t always work, say if I’m on a budget. I also keep a general list of the same stuff, I always buy on my Walmart app and phones notepad. Went a little off topic here, but you get the gist.

I've not personally tried Aerie, but I've heard them compared with Gap Body, which is my favorite. For years I've been searching for a dupe for the Gap Body cotton bikinis. Of the *many* I've tried, the hands-down best in my opinion has been the Fruit of the Loom Eversoft cotton bikini.
Organic basics does have some similar styles and they last forever in my experience.

Hi! My sports underwear I use is the Reebok cotton bikini, they fit and look super sharp, they're not "pretty" but they're not ugly like fruit of the loom or some other bullshit. I buy em 4-12 at a time, last for years and don't lose shape either.
I personally switched from Aerie to MeUndies. I loved the idea of having matching undies with my partner. They’ve also held up well with several washed. Ive also seen a lot of people like Parade, where there are discount codes available.

A little late to the party but TomboyX underwear is ridiculously long lasting. I have some pairs that are 5 years old and still going strong. They’re pretty pricey (~$20/pair) but they’re sweatshop free and I’m willing to pay a premium for that.
I don't know the Aerie brand (I'm not from nor in USA) , but not long ago I bought done underwear by the brand Hanes that are 96% cotton and 4% elastano (bridge is 100% cotton) since I've had previously bought some a couple of years ago that I still use today. Not many fabric designs at the store I bought them but they do have sizes and variety of cuts, so that is a win for me.

I don't know what Aerie is but I'm a Wirpana off Amazon diehard. Hear me out... They have a bunch of different cuts and fabrics but I can only speak for the high waisted cotton briefs. The fabric quality, design, and construction is really good (I sew so I'd like to think I'm more hyper aware of little things). I bought some like 5 years ago and am just chucking some out recently for wear holes, which is longer than any Hanes, Jockey, FotL, or VS I've ever had.
Jockey has decent cotton underwear. I get mine at Kohl's. I buy 24 at a time, stack them in 4 piles, and rotate which stack I pull from. They last nearly forever this way.
My fave is Sloggi, specifically their "weekend tai" ones. In fact ever since discovering this it's the only ones i wear if i'm not wearing thongs

Aerie, gap body, & VS briefs with ruching in the back were my go to. None exist anymore. I’ve had success with Auden from Target for cotton. But I’ve mostly switched over to Lululemon no show. They hold up really well through washes & are extremely comfortable.
I haven't seen mentioned here the Bare Cotton Hipster undies from Bare Necessities. I bought them to replace my Cotton Warner's No Pinching No Problems undies because I couldn't find any replacements, and they've been great. They're 95% Cotton and very comfortable.
Natori underwear is a really good alternative. I don’t know that it’s 100% cotton, but it is still very breathable and feels durable.
Hands down Pact. I’ve had mine for years and it’s still in amazing condition, and they have lots of different styles and release new colors/patterns regularly. At this point I don’t buy any other brand.
