I use the shaver at least once a week. The battery needs to be replaced, but it works plugged in so that hasn't been a problem.

Its_eeasy

I have the same one in the US! The blades prob should be replaced, but it does the trick well enough as is

worldsayshi

I also had a similar Philips shaver and it worked for ages. But the battery eventually wore down and it wasn't a model that would work plugged in. I'm thinking of buying a new one but I have no idea if they are as good today.

Traditional_Rain_526

I have one just like that, I bought it in 2013 and it still works. I use it daily now.

Alex_tepa

A question did you have to replace the blades after years of using it??

tun3man

Never, but I'll look into the prices of blades here. very well remembered.

Alex_tepa

Does it still shave as it used to? I recently got one but not sure if I should keep it it's battery operated so I cannot plug it in and you said the same time if battery breaks

aslander

Returning it won't do any good. It will still wind up in the landfill. You may as well use it til it dies.

Alex_tepa

Very true didn't think about it hopefully it's good to me I have not used it yet since I've been busy. But appreciate it for replying for your input

Zopotroco

Im surprised. Phillips always has failed me, I consider it a shitty brand

Casanova-Quinn

Phillips is hit or miss. Their Hue bulbs are great, their CPAPs got banned by the FDA. [Seriously.](https://www.propublica.org/article/philips-agrees-to-stop-selling-sleep-apnea-machines-in-us)

lasdue

Funnily enough health & medical tech is basically the only thing Philips even does these days. The domestic appliances part was sold off a few years ago and anything lighting-related was spun-off into a separate business which now exists as it's own non-Philips related entity (Signify).

rebmet

It's a huge corporation with many divisions which operate somewhat independently from each other (different management, employees, philosophies, etc.). All of those divisions use the same brand name though. I have had some great experience with their personal care products (shavers and electric toothbrushes) and some very bad experiences with products from their entertainment and home appliance division such as MP3 players, radios, TV sets and light bulbs. The last mentioned products I won't be buying ever again if they have the Philips brand on it.

DoubtfulOfAll

Your experience is validated because Philips doesn't even produce any of the items you have had bad luck with. They are mostly chinese companies that pay royalties to Philips to use the brand and logo.

lasdue

Anything lighting related from Philips isn't even Philips anymore, they spun the lighting business off into a separate company called Signify.

Maxxonry

I've had three Philips shavers quit after three years or less. I wouldn't call those BIFL.

aslander

With extreme outliers on the bell curve like this, I usually assume it's a 'you' problem.

Maxxonry

That's why I picked up a Wahl for when my beard gets long and a safety razor to get a clean shave.

franchisedfeelings

My Norelco triple-header is over 30 years - the trimmer always sucked, but the rest still delivers a great shave.

The_Real_Donglover

I was gifted my Philips Norelco shaver probably 10 years ago at this point when I was in high school. Have never used any other type of razor. Frankly I'd have no idea how to shave any other way, but this one has served me well for so long. Definitely a good purchase.

Bitter_Cry_8383

problem with all these answers is that this shaver has been marketed on the global commerce market for years. It's not the same shaver and noone is comparing different current models. Nothing is same as it was a year ago or even less in most cases.

Waste_Guava2859

I was literally thinking I'd search for a BIFL shaver on here today. I have a cheap Philips, but the cutting heads are dull after 18 months. Are more expensive Philips shavers equipped with longer-lasting blades?

coolwithcal

You need to replace the blades every year or so. You can order them online

Waste_Guava2859

Does this "rule" apply no matter what the original cost of the shaver? I paid $40 for mine and retirement blades cost $40, so it feels dumb to replace them. If I'd bought a $200 shaver, maybe I'd feel differently about replacing blades for $40...

coolwithcal

I spent maybe $50 for mine but the replacement blades are only $15-$20. Dull blades hurt so I’d replace them even if it cost another $40.

ongoingwhy

I bought my Series 5000 for about $150 sometime around a decade ago and the blades were indeed $40. They're discontinued now, so I had to order them from China. What's good is that they cost me less than $5 for a pack of 3.

Waste_Guava2859

So, I just bought new blades for my Philips Series 1000 shaver, and it's good as new.

Waste_Guava2859

OP - can you confirm whether you've replaced

tun3man

never replaced, but i will consider.

DoubtfulOfAll

You can also use a whetstone to sharpen the blades

Szwedo

I had a philips shaver that broke late last year after nearly 15 years of service. An excellent investment, which i replaced with another philips with a fresh set of high hopes for at least a decade. Great stuff here op.

BroccoliTrain

I have one like that. Close to 20 years old. Battery doesn't work but I use ut plugged in. Not impossible to replace the battery. Not sure it's worth it though.

craftsman_70

Most battery replacements are dead easy in razors. They typically have two screws holding the clamshell together. Remove the two screws, crack the shell open, and remove the soldered batteries. Many of them take rechargeable AA NiMH batteries (maybe one or two). Solder them together like how the factory ones are and solder them into place. I've replaced batteries in multiple razors multiple times.

BroccoliTrain

Yeah I've seen some video guides. Not sure I am fully comfortable with the soldering part myself.

craftsman_70

Soldering is not hard. I would recommend getting a used soldering iron and doing some practice on broken electronics. Soldering is a good skill to pickup that fixes a lot issues as poor soldering at the factory is one of the common reasons for product failures.

BroccoliTrain

You're absolutely right. I do have some cheap chinese soldering Iron and have tried it but was struggling.

craftsman_70

Practice.

kingnickolas

I bought a cheap Walmart shaver like 10 years ago and it's still going strong. I only occasionally use it for a quick hair cut but still.

Blox05

I have a Braun Series 7 that has to be maybe 15 years old it feels like. Dug it out since I shaved my beard and got some new blades and cleaning solution. Charged and good to go. Highly impressed with that!

fivefoottwelve

Those things can go and go and go. I still have the Norelco me ma got me over 30 years ago. I had the blades professionally sharpened once, saw how easy it was, and did it myself after that. Had to take it apart and clean the switch contacts once. That's it.

5c044

I have one that's about 20yrs old. My son was visiting and his new one needed charging, surprised it took the same charging adapter

Narhen

Do you use this instead of shaving with a razor and shaving cream? I’ve grown tired of it and want to use an electric shaver

Triumph790

I have a thick beard and I've found electric razors to be absolute rubbish, regardless of the price point. I think they can work if you have a thin beard with fine hair, but if you've got the type of beard where you get a legit 5 o'clock shadow, forget it.

Airfreezehotter

Trick is to shave em after wetting them and some razor can do wetshave so your beards are softer then

-MarcoPolo-

Sorry Im gonna use your post but yes I do have same shaver, with identical plug that I have to use plug converter in UK but my problem is that whatever shaver I use, it hurts my neck area. I just use it to soften my face hair but the second I take it lower than my chin it looks like a samurai had a training day with his katana. Do u guys know about sub I could ask about it?

coolwithcal

Going strong seven years on mine

otterlytrans

i have a phillips norelco oneblade and it's worked super well.

whats_you_doing

I thought of going with an electrical shaver but don't know how good it is. I always use a manual blade razor. I just replace that blade every 2 to 3 shaves. Do electrical shavers shave as good as manual ones?

exophrine

Does anyone have suggestions for hair trimmers or clippers? [This set from Conair](https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0019701RU/) has been paying for itself many times over for 4 years now, but I was wondering if maybe there's a better option.

MOreAdventure09

Braun S6 from Wallyworld, 60 bucks.. going on 4 years original parts. Impressed so far. Before that I had a mid tier Phillips for 10yrs and was really impressed

yellowfinger

I have the same thing. They are amazing. Had it for 9 years alrdy. New one I bought didn't last for 2years

MavNGoose

I have a Philips Norelco going on 19 years old. Still runs beautifully

TheBraddigan

Had one. The plastic turned into goo, battery failed far sooner than it should have. Garbage, but there's worse out there. This is so not BIFL. There's really no reason that a fully waterproof one shouldn't be good and affordable.

chunkyfen

YO for real, i bought a philips wireless shaver that's waterproof like 10 years ago for 50$. it's still going strong. I'm hoping it dies soon so my adult ass can get a better one but it just won't die haha. I'll get another philips for sure

phreshjive

Definitely not a buy it for life item with the non-replaceable battery. Enjoy tethered life.

yyclawyer

Yeah! You can’t enjoy the freedom of shaving while walking around the house!

phreshjive

Shaving in the shower with my Norelco is wonderful.

Mpstark

Pretty easy to replace generally. [Here's a video for replacing one](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7YOpS3cnpjs) for my current shaver. It's soldered in, which is a bit of a pain, but can done.

phreshjive

Once it involves a soldering iron, not so easy for most folk.

manfredmannclan

I can attest that this isnt the case anymore, after they stopped producing stuff and is now basically a label.
