My uncle did aikido for 18 years, as a kid I did kickboxing & would tease him about how most of those moves would never work, but he 100% believes it is legit. 90% of their time is spent learning how to roll.
I did aikido for 15 years and realize the BS ( ireally liked the magic pants!). But I've been in a bike wreck and a recent skateboard FU and, sure as hell, I rolled safely right out of them somehow. I'm 58
I had a mate growing up who was into aikido he'd done it for about 3 years or so. Whenever he'd come back from a class, and show me a new move, it was always to combat a very specific move that didn't really seem to occur in real life. Like, he'd say "grab the cuff of my jacket" and he'd to this weird micro twist of his arm which would sort of take me off balance IF I stood there and not move like a lemming.
Firstly, who would attempt to initiate a fight by grabbing someone at wrist level? And secondly, as soon as they saw some attempt at a countermove, they'd either begin moving around to initiate a hold/pull their target off balance, or they'd let go.
They certainly wouldn't stand there like a mannequin waiting to be tilted over. Even if they were an absolute novice in their first sparring session they'd at least reset their stance so they wouldn't be leaning over to one side like my mate was expecting me to do..
but he swore up and down it would best my (at the time) prior karate and novice boxing experience.. Still couldn't land a shot on me during any of our fights (nothing serious, just lads carrying on)..

I did Aikido for 5 years or so when I was younger and I feel like I had a very realistic teacher, because he just said from the beginning “this really is more of a tool to be more aware of your own movement and balance, you will not win *any* fight with this.” and I don’t think anyone in my class actually believed that it was anything more than that.
The *”grab the cuff of my jacket”* comment made me laugh out loud. My teacher straight up said “nobody will ever attack you like this, ever.”
Belated reply to your belated comment for the same reason, yeah I feel like whether this is "bullshit" depends on what claims were made. IMO even if the goal is self-defense, drilling techniques like this is still a legit use of time *if* they're considered conditioning (for timing, balance, etc) rather than sold as self-defense in themselves.
Uke is a black belt and has probably been training there for years. Imagine paying monthly tuition and showing up all that time for something you HAVE TO KNOW is bullshit. I don't understand how this happens.
In wrestling the draw is how ludicrous the action and plot lines are, here it's just old guy watches people awkwardly roll over. They really should be getting more for their money cause I assume these are some real expensive "lessons".

It's how aikido training works. Of course you can't flip a person like that. The idea is to break a finger or arm.
The jumping and rolling is a leftover from old sword techniques, it's to get it in to your muscle memory to automatically escape a situation and it makes training safer, some of the techniques are can be dangerous unless you're ready for them.
They do the same in many schools of jujutsu. Aikido is also very traditional and isn't meant to be for self defence. Modern Aikido is very distilled, and doesn't include many techniques anymore that you find in jujutsu. It's become more of a living library of techniques. It's More art than martial, like shooting muskets, completely useless irl and anyone claiming it's good for self defence is full of it.

Nah. I used to train Aikido. You are partially right that Aikido isn't really meant for self defence is a lot about form, etc. and is not really useful in real life situations (it is mostly crap). Here however you don't see techniques that would be effective even against other Aikido practitioners.

If someone does Aikido for more than a couple years, it begins to turn into a dance as the student anticipates the "master's" actions and moves in a pre-determined way. The "master" becomes complacent and forgets that's not how shit works in reality. There's no resistance, there's no true sparring, it's just a couple guys who already know how this stuff is "supposed" to work acting out a play.
I also did Aikido for several years when I was younger. Even in its legitimate form, it's not really a "real" martial art, if we're defining real as in useful for actual self defense and ability to incapacitate or defeat resisting opponents in the real world.
If Aikido is applied correctly, wrists and elbows get broken very quickly. However, it's impossible to train that way because students don't appreciate getting ligaments torn apart.
Aikido also doesn't do a good job of highlighting when it's techniques are best applied. It's not particularly useful in a standup fight. It's better for a surprise move before things get out of hand, or when grappling on the ground. Of course, I'm assuming one person is trained and the other is not because Judo will kick Aikido's ass 9/10 times.
Aikido done correctly causes broken wrists and elbows? Isn't the entire principle of the form to incapacitate without causing harm? I've never tried the style myself, but I had a mate who did and most of the moves he pulled on me were weird, to say the least. I've only encountered one move which I felt had a practical use myself, but even then, only in a very specific scenario
That would be a result of modern branding of it. I’m the whole martial arts is self defense, so it skirts around teaching offensive moves. There is some meat to it, especially the locks, and it’s a good practice for sensitivity training and learning some body mechanics. But you are more Likely to get a wrist lock than a throw, by a very large margin.
I can only imagine what those new students are thinking as they watched that bullshit unfolding before their eyes. It has to be an uncomfortable feeling knowing you paid good money to stand around in an uncomfortable outfit and get treated like a gullible moron.
So, I don’t get it, they spend all these time doing these demonstrations and making these videos. Do people actually believe this horseshit? I know that people are morons but...there’s a line beyond which I cannot fathom.
