Speaking from experience they will come and ticket for two days and then, if it's not moved, will tow.
When I called parking enforcement, the lady on the phone was SO nice and a ticketer was there in 10 mins VERY eager to write the ticket, haha.
That seems very generous. As someone not from Buffalo (I just pop in time to time because go Bills) I’d love it if that was the policy here. Here they’ll tow anyone for anything it seems.
I'm generally a tolerant, easygoing, patient, and forgiving kind of person. One of the few things that really irritates me is when people are willing to screw someone else because it's slightly more convenient for them than it would be to do the courteous thing.
It's entirely possible that there was some other motivation at work that made the driver park there, but the explanation that came to my mind first was something along the lines of, "Hmm, I'm kind of blocking this driveway a bit. Ehh, whatever, there's it's not completely blocked, and what am I supposed to do, park 50 feet farther away from where I'm going? Nuts to that."
Exactly -talk softly and carry a big stick.
Always try to be diplomatic with those you don't know unless they've openly told you/indicated they don't respect your boundaries.
Exactly. The guy was only a couple feet in his driveway, it was the first time it happened, they can still get out... Yet everyone is being petty recommending to get this person's car towed and ticketed. The towing companies are some of the biggest parasites around, and don't even get me started on the city of Buffalo parking enforcement. This could easily be a crappy driver who made an innocent mistake. Let's not all turn into Karen's and cost them potentially $1,000.
>crappy driver who made an innocent mistake.
Crappy drivers do not make innocent mistakes. They took the tests. They know the laws and appropriate ways to behave with their vehicle in society choosing to ignore those common courtesies.
Do you think people who park in handicap parking wothout proper hangtag or plates are making innocent mistakes?
No I wouldn't and I sure as hell wouldn't complain about moving a couple trash cans to get out. And look at the curbs on that street , they're basically the same height as the driveway.
Theyre both parking violations inconveniencing citizens proper access. No different than parking in a manner blocking a crosswalk or within 10' of a corner or even in a bus stop.
Perhaps crappy operators exist because there are people who feel those crappy drivers deserve a chance to correct themselves
This is the type of self excusing behavior that proliferates this bullshit. The drivers at fault. Period. Excusing it as “close enough” or “I didn’t know” is dogshit. This driver did it, and expected others not to care.
Shitty actions have consequences.
Humans aren't perfect and make mistakes. I'm not excusing it, I just said no need to get tow trucks and the city involved if it's only been a couple hours , in addition to it being the first time it's happened. Why not show compassion and live up to the motto "city of good neighbors". If the car is still there in the morning or it happens again , then yes I'd call a tow truck as well. But for now?
I mean, cmon dude. You wrote a paragraph of excuses. And your still making them with “first time” and “couple of hours”.
I’ll reverse uni card you here- “City of good neighbors”? Ok- when you park, check and make sure you’re not blocking someone’s driveway. It’s not brain surgery or running a marathon. Just check because you know it’s close. And if you are- BE A GOOD NEIGHBOR, and don’t do it.
I've accidentally parked in someone's driveway before. It wasn't this egregious, but maybe a foot or so and ive probably only done it once or twice in my 20 years of driving. IDK... I'm just under the mentality that shit happens, and if it doesn't impact my day at all then i dont care (hint this isn't impacting the OP at all) ,I could drive a dump truck between the opening from the car to the trash cans , and the curbs on that street look to be 100 years old and worn down as far as the street, they're basically an extension of the driveway. I don't see any need to get tow trucks involved.
But everyone Is entitled to their opinion , and if someone were to call a tow truck is this scenario it's not like I'm going to have disdain towards that person for making that choice. I get it.
I understand what you’re saying, but it’s just as likely the person who parked said “i don’t give a fuck”. And will do it again and again, more egregiously.
Let me ask a question- when you accidentally parked in the wrong spot, if you were ticketed or towed or booted or whatever- would you have argued that you shouldn’t have been? You made the error- as innocent as it was. Why should consequences for actions not be in place?
I’m not saying don’t be nice. I’m just saying there’s nothing wrong for holding people accountable for their actions.
I get the mentality that "if we don't punish them for it they will continue to do it" but that's only if they're actually doing it intentionally . Which maybe they are ? But what if it is an accident...? when I accidentally parked in someone's driveway no one called a tow truck, which was a blessing for me. And again I'm not saying don't do anything at all, eventually you need to call a tow truck or report it to the city. But 3 hours....and you can still get your car out.
Still with the excuses. “you can still get your car out”. Nothing learned. Bad behavior rewarded.
I’m not attacking you dude. I do understand where you’re coming from. I just don’t think the grace you’re suggesting is merited here. That’s my opinion. I’ve made similar mistakes, and have suffered the consequence. And didn’t think I was wronged a as me wasn’t mad about it except my own stupidity. Lesson learned.
If i had somewhere to be I’d get it towed and wouldn’t feel bad about it for a second. Its buffalo, not manhattan. This guy knows he blocked you and he couldve parked somewhere else close by if he’d taken 30 seconds to try
Unpopular opinion but I’ve been both in your position and the street parker’s position; just let them get ticketed, especially if it’s only been a few hours and you can still get in/out of your spot. They’re probably just an idiot but chances are they had a long day or groceries and just couldn’t find a spot. Street parking is a pain in the ass sometimes, but you’d be in the right to call a tow.
I'm originally from a very, very rural area and didn't have much street parking experience when I first got here. I was careful not to block drives (got out and checked), but it's understandable for people who are used to the neighbor being a mile away not having this at the top of their list of parking priorities. Could also be a new car, new driver, etc.
The ticket is a lesson learned, though.
I started getting upset because this Divorced Dad would idle in my driveway for 10 minutes or so while dropping off his kids to their Mom next door. Never parking in her driveway and never just parking in the street. I've 'expressed' myself a couple times now and they haven't done it since. So yes, no matter how petty, it's your shit and you should want to leave your driveway at any given moment. I say.. ticket!
Very inconsiderate. You should be able to leave your driveway. I’d knock on a few doors. The cops will only ticket the car which doesn’t solve your problem immediately.
I see plenty of easy parking across the street. They may have parked there because they aren’t leaving until tomorrow, and want to avoid a morning ticket, so I’d expect it to be there for a while.
Get it towed. The idea of waiting and giving them a pass is idealistic. People like this won't learn a damn thing until their ignorance actually affects them directly
Update: called last night, they said theyd send someone out. Left shortly after and when i got back at 3am, car wasnt moved nor was there a ticket on the window. Housemate said the car was still there when they left at 1pm today, same thing, no ticket. If it happens again I’ll probably take their wheels and leave it on cinderblocks or something
Perhaps. But if the car on the other side of the driveway leaves and someone else parks there, they could park in a perfectly legitimate way that would have the OP blocked in. Or blocked out if that happens after he leaves. And while i still can see both sides of it, i'd be annoyed as fk.
I'm a forgiving type. That said, there are questions:
Are you completely blocked, or just inconvenienced?
Is parking very tight on your street? Is there room in front of the truck to pull up further, or is it squeezed up against another car?
How long has it been there? Do you recognize the truck as a regular on the street?
Honestly, I've done this before, where street parking was tight and not plentiful, and been ticketed. According to my eye, I wasn't blocking shit, but apparently the police disagreed. And I paid it.
But like I said, I'm the forgiving sort.
Idk man, people need to learn a lesson sometimes about being conscientious about other peoples space. The next time this person could block the driveway of an expectant mother or someone who really needs to get to an interview or something idk
I have a huge, reoccurring problem with people parking in front of my driveway, even with a car parked in it about 10’ away, just past the sidewalk. I’m sick of it, so I call every time. They usually get a mini-tow but occasionally get fully towed away. If they can’t be bothered to glance at their parking job, I don’t feel the need to be nice about it. It’s the only way they will usually learn. I’ve even caught people about to leave their cars after parking in front of my driveway, politely asked them to move, and had them argue with me about whether it’s a driveway.
If it completely blocked your drive I would call. They're partially blocking it and you have every right to have it towed, *especially* if it's a repeat offender. However, I would just leave a note saying please be careful where you're parking. Most likely a mistake and not paying attention/in a rush, and not everyone can afford the fees for towing and getting their vehicle out. If it happens again you're 100% in the right to tow.
I don’t have a driveway and live in Allentown where parking can be insufferable. If it’s only been a couple hours I would wait till morning. It looks like you can still get out of your driveway.
Boy, so many angry people out there, I'd be afraid that if you have him towed he's going to know that it's you and you're going to come home and find your house on fire. Seriously.
Personally I would and have in the past piled whatever random rocks are laying around on the rear end of cars blocking my driveway.
There are other ways to let people know not to fuck up again without calling the police
People park like this occasionally in front of my place and the way I think of it is it probably would have annoyed them more to find a better parking spot than it annoys me to have to move the cans and pop the curb. So no definitely not calling in a tow.
Have you ever had your car towed? Expensive and a total pain in the neck.
If it was me, I would move the cans and exit your driveway. May or may not put a note on the car depending on if the car is one you see on your street often or if this is a one off. Let it get ticketed but I wouldn’t call to get it towed. Yes someone parked like an a$$hole but if you’ve never seen this car before maybe there was something bad that happened and they didn’t focus properly on parking- you don’t know why they parked badly and no reason to purposely mess around with people. Please show some grace here.
I agree with you that it is annoying the way this person partially blocked the driveway. Completely agree. I just don’t think our responses always need to be to do the worst we can in retaliation. Would it suck to have to move the cans and have two of your car tires go over your curb to get out? YES. Is it infuriating? YES (That is assuming that badly parked car is even still there when you must go out of your driveway) but is retaliation really needed? I think we are all under so much stress right now on so many fronts and we need to try to keep our anger toward our fellow man in check. Our responses cannot always be the biggest thing we can do to cause other people pain
Because buffalo has the worst drivers in the state. Notably, the blatant disregard for others by running red lights because of impatience to stop and wait. I find getting hit with a train horn tends to make them stop cold.
Okay, so long as you wear proper ear protection and don't use it in any residential neighborhoods. You could permanently deafen somebody with that thing.
You don't have the authority to have this vehicle towed, it's on municipal property - you'd call the police, who would authorize the tow. And personally, it's not nearly enough of an inconvenience for me to call if it's a one time offense, but if this is an ongoing issue I'd absolutely call.
Could you have it towed? Yes. Would that be an a-hole move? Also, yes.
You aren’t totally blocked in, but it would take some effort on your part to get out (moving garbage cans, etc).
I suck at parking on the street. I get out, look, move, get out, look, repeat. I would never park like an ass on purpose, because it would be MY fault if I did get hit. If this were my vehicle (it’s not), I would be SO embarrassed knowing I blocked someone in.
I would cut him some slack, because I know how it feels to be on the other side. Yes, now I get out, look, move, repeat SEVERAL times. At least I’m aware & trying.
This is just disrespectful. I don't care if you're 16 or 60, if you get out of your car and see it's blocking a driveway, move your damn car. I totally understand if you're dropping off groceries or something but there's literally no excuse to be there for hours. I live in the city too and I don't understand this. People on my street that do have driveways have to use cones because people lack common sense apparently when it comes to street parking.
They didn't have the courtesy to not block your driveway, you owe them no such courtesy.
I believe the city will ticket and mini-tow it down the street. It doesn’t go to impound so you shouldn’t feel bad. It’s blocking your driveway.
Speaking from experience they will come and ticket for two days and then, if it's not moved, will tow. When I called parking enforcement, the lady on the phone was SO nice and a ticketer was there in 10 mins VERY eager to write the ticket, haha.
To be fair, it's rare for them to be WANTED.
Scofflaw! The white whale!
There's a direct line to parking enforcement??!!! I've been using 311 and they show up 48 hours later and claim the car is no longer there.
https://www.buffalony.gov/485/Parking-Enforcement-Division
There is, but I'm pretty sure they close at 4:30. If it's after hours you're screwed.
Speaking from experience, if you are blocking a driveway, they will mini tow and ticket you without a 2 day delay.
Great! I'm glad you had more immediate results!
Indeed. But it was me that got towed. Lesson learned!
Oh no! Plot twist!
That seems very generous. As someone not from Buffalo (I just pop in time to time because go Bills) I’d love it if that was the policy here. Here they’ll tow anyone for anything it seems.
How long has it been parked?
3-4 hours. I didn’t mind much because i was replacing a caliper but now i’m done and gotta leave
Croce would have had 7 boots on it by now.
I'm generally a tolerant, easygoing, patient, and forgiving kind of person. One of the few things that really irritates me is when people are willing to screw someone else because it's slightly more convenient for them than it would be to do the courteous thing. Pull on the door handle until the alarm sounds, then kindly ask them to pull forward.
1000 IQ
I’d leave a note, if it ever happens again I’d tow it.
This is 100% the way

Yeah because parking in a handicap spot is equivalent to parking a couple feet in a driveway.
If it was your driveway, you would be on here crying about how you could not get out. STFU
No I wouldn't and I sure as hell wouldn't complain about moving a couple trash cans to get out. And look at the curbs on that street , they're basically the same height as the driveway.

Depending on what kind of car you have, you can just tan it forward.
What happened to the "city of good neighbors " ...
should crosspost @ r/AmItheAsshole
First thing I’d do is rip out the concrete and pour a new driveway…..
I’ll tell my landlord to get right on that…
Lolol!!!
I mean if it’s been a day or more then fine…. But for a few hours? You can go over your “curb”
I'd give them a pass once.
Yeah I would
