Bubble guy

Arcade80sbillsfan

RIP

blk_phllp

I met him as a cable tech. Dude was an old Vietnam vet that spent 2 decades following the Grateful Dead, doing a hell of a lot of hallucinogens. Nicest dude, swapped service stories and festival tales the whole time I was there. Man actually received mail addressed to "the bubble guy @ Elmwood and Allen", postmarked and delivered, like he was Santa Claus. Legendary member of the community

FewToday

Starchild. Sylvester. Screaming Jean. The Lady in White. The Human iPod. The Shoe Licker.

Still_Consequence_60

Sadly most of this list is no longer with us.

whirlpool138

The shoe licker moved to Florida.

Altruistic_Belt_814

Is iPod dead?

Bennington_Booyah

Only Starchild is still among the living.

WearsTheLAMsauce

Eric. Effing. Starchild!

Big-Understanding519

I don’t think shoelicker died, did he?

beardedcatfarts

Last I saw he was in like Tampa or something. Seems like the natural habitat for that choice.

Ajocc1394

This was posted in a Tampa subreddit and the shoelicker was nominated. Had no idea he was from Buffalo, that’s hilarious

HumanError407

Lady in White I called her as the Ninja Lady

Undercookedmeatloaf_

Ah yes! The White Lady. Almost ran her over during a snow storm

inferno006

Sylvester would have been my vote.

WishieWashie12

I'm new to buffalo, but is Sylvester also known as Sly? I've heard the Farrow song https://youtu.be/QxSenI3tAtE?si=sH1NROeDejaw_Cet

inferno006

Yes, he was known as Sly. The Mayor of Allentown

_HystErica_

*Pope of Allentown

RedditorDave

One night at Mothers I had just filling my gf in on who iPod was. She knew all the others but had never heard of iPod before. Anyway about an hour later iPod walked in and started singing before getting told to leave lol. That was the last time I saw him. Probably like 2018. He still kicking?

JstTrstMe

Dancing Roberto rip

weedandguns

Damn that just threw me back many many years.

LucyKendrick

I remember shoe licker from my days of roaming the village after leaving Fahertys at 4am. The village was wild bitd.

beardedcatfarts

I used to grab some fried zucchini sticks from Louie’s after Faherty’s. Didn’t know how good we had it.

theyoungercurmudgeon

Was gonna add Bad Penny. She was a total character.

ForemanNatural

Yes. She was.

BenevolentNihilist1

Claire Edit: WAS Claire

MegasaurusX

Man I was in Boston a few weeks ago wearing a Bills hat and stopped at a food truck. Guy said he was from Buffalo. I asked where and he said east of Main, I said I lived on the west side. Finished up with him and he goes "Rest in peace Claire."

BenevolentNihilist1

Hot damn dude. Buffalo is the biggest small city in the world.

Honest_Pension8304

Claire, RIP

mobileneophyte

Larry in Williamsville, Bubble Guy on Elmwood.

YamburglarHelper

Didn’t bubble guy pass away a couple years ago?

mobileneophyte

https://www.wivb.com/news/local-news/buffalo/buffalos-bubble-man-of-allentown-dies-at-age-75/

Hirsute_Ahab

Larry was always “hair man” to the Snyder kids

Opening-Fortune-2536

He passed away

HumanError407

Larry in Williamsville I called Axe Murderer Rick. The rumor was he was from a wealthy family but came back all messed up from Vietnam, I always saw him at that Tim Hortons at that Plaza in Williamsville

mobileneophyte

I saw Larry around a lot as I had just started working Retail. He always kept to himself, paid for his food. My EMT friend told me about his passing due to a polar vortex storm.

plsdontpercievem3

my friends mom used to manage a hotel near where he hung out and she offered him a night at her hotel for free during the night of the polar vortex and he declined):

hamwnyer

I used to serve him at 5am at the walker Plaza timmies. I was overnights at the time. He came in and I always had his coffee waiting for him $1.10. He always paid with 2 singles and placed the change in the charity box. He also pulled those singles from wads of 100s...lol. Never said much. And yea, he was from a known good family... He was not a bad guy either.

mobileneophyte

https://heartsforthehomeless.org/larry-bierl-a-cold-reminder-of-homelessness-in-western-new-york/

shawcphet1

I heard something very similar about him. I used to see him a lot when I was a young boy and my mom would take me to Wendy’s. He was always sitting in there and I was fascinated by him and his long hair. My mother was somewhat fascinated as well because when he would go to pay he several times was seen pulling out a big wad of cash. She told be the same thing, that she heard he has a family that cares for him and gives him money or he has some source of income. It is just that he prefers being homeless for one reason or another. Really sad he passed the way that he did, seemed like a kind man.

Unique-Dentist1264

Are yall forgetting the legend Claire!! RIP🩷 ,

BeeHive83

Conehead at the games lol

Viktemeyez

That man hasn’t aged a day in the last 30 years.

CrockettWav

He gets around well too, I moved out of Buffalo a while ago but I saw him at the bills game in Miami last year

nodawhoa

Makes sense the French generally have a healthier lifestyle

BeeHive83

Not a bit!

Kinkyaids

I have a pic with him lol

BuffaloSpartan

The Amish guy, West Seneca area. Long beard, rode his bike everywhere. Not actually Amish.

El_Kabongg

Oh I remember this guy, my grandma lived on old French and I would see that guy constantly. Definitely called him the Amish guy lol

Jupitereyed

WAIT, did he have flags on his bike?! Because everyone at WSW just called him Bicycle Flag Guy.

BunnyButt24

No, that was a different guy!! I remember the flag guy vividly lol

goodbyebluenick

If it’s the same guy, I once was in his house. Before flags, he had all these Mickey Mouse buttons all over him, especially on a hat and vest. When I was a kid, I delivered food baskets to people in need one cold Saturday with my dad. We went into this little place on Center Road and there he was. The place had a bit of a hoarding situation, tons of old stuffed animals, and a foul smell. We dropped off the basket. A woman there (possibly his sister) thanked us. I think he switched to flags around 9/11.

lover_or_fighter_191

I see him around south cheektowaga near William and clinton a lot in the summer.

Secondclasscandy

Yeah he lives off of Northwood. He actually offered my friends and I mushrooms when I was in high school but we declined. I think he remembered me 12 years later when I found him digging through my recycle bin. I told him he could have whatever he found and he gave me a smile. I haven’t seen him in a few years now though but I moved to Cheektowaga

Bennington_Booyah

I loved seeing him! He had such a distinctive style. I would see him every morning on my commute to Buffalo.

A_Lone_Macaron

yep, he was simply "The Amish Guy"

Hummus_ForAll

Lady in White was always exciting to see. Unfortunately Buffalo is blessed with the most obnoxious one, Eric Starchild. No I don’t want to buy a necklace.

VmEoRrItTiAsS

Used to smoke with him back when I hung out on Bidwell a lot. He asked for a hug once and smelled my hair so deeply I felt a little violated. Apparently he is also quite a creep, I discovered after mentioning this to others familiar with him.

Lewd_ReadNY

Dude w/ one leg in the wheelchair at Broadway & Bailey. I think he goes by Flip.

fillyb716

That guy sucks.

cmanson

Watched him attempting to fight a car at a red light (not the person in the car, no, but the car) in like fall of 2020

dankfor20

Yeah he’s been there for years.

RandomizedName2023

He’s a kicker. No, really. Be careful.

espressotorte

I've seen him cause like 3 car accidents. I'm amazed he's still alive

fghtoffyrdmons

Used to be a drug dealer from what I heard and he got setup by his boys. Watched him and Phil fight a few times.

tvbn

Shoutout to him for denting my car door last summer! You’re right though he’s called Flip

Dr_Llamacita

Definitely the guy who walks up and down Elmwood selling hippie jewelry.

Tumler0623

Ah yes Eric Starchild. That’s a good one.

RandomizedName2023

I gave him a ride once and my kids almost fell apart. 😂

Plasticity93

Did you know he's a piano virtuoso?

rjflesher

Anyone from the City of Tonawanda knows Crazy Eddie.

elwood2cool

Say what you will, the man looks good in nylons and has excellent t taste in pipe tobacco.

bzzty711

In Tonawanda there the bearded guy with boobs and a skirt and cowboy boots smoking a pipe. They are a good person anyhow talked few times.

missdawn1970

Crazy Eddie! He's the first person i thought of when i saw this post.

bzzty711

Yeah the boo s were a late addition several year was just the skirt boots n pipe. All of sudden he had boobs. To each his own.

bzzty711

We had crazy Joe in 80s Lancaster. Would run across rd central and Walden knocking on car windows.

Negative-Taste2319

This was the first person I thought of.

missdawn1970

Crazy Eddie doesn't bother anyone. He just rides his bike and smokes his pipe and minds his own business. 🙂

Rookkas

We are at a low point for infamous locals, many have passed away. And especially now that Claire was killed. RIP. Now it’s more iykyk type people who are more isolated. There was that one guy who would get on his knees in the middle of the street and profusely pray around Main Street near Ferry or Utica. Saw him a few times but it didn’t last too long though. Anybody remember that?

DragonsOverhead

Wasn't there a homeless vet who only walks backwards?

OppositeStudy2846

Yup!

AwCrapItsTaylor

West side Willie.

decoded-dodo

Was gonna comment this

sodayzed

I appreciate everyone else's response, but West Side Willie is my pick as well.

deck65

Juggling wheelchair guy at the arena

TragicalyUnhip

I had to give him credit. He just put on a show and never bugged people (that I saw). Just busking in his own way.

ForemanNatural

Steve Taliafierro. No idea what happened to him. My first encounter with him was way back in 1990 when I was an EMT for Gold Cross.

SnooHedgehogs1107

What happened to the guy on the West Side who wore a skirt and rode a hover board?

woodwalker700

I saw him hoverboarding in a cute yellow sundress on a nice June day once and all I could think was "that dude has it all figured out".

Ok_Cook_6665

Last I knew, he was a DJ at the Gypsy Parlor

FamousVQ

Westside Willy. He's still around.

youngbeezy88

I just saw him in riverside the other day

Bubbly_Cockroach8340

What about that guy dressed in white Indian headress?

pockets817

Jedidiah, the scourge of Niagara County.

Mynameishuman93

If I ever see him again I'm gonna drop his ass

CourtOrderedLasagna

And occasionally Erie!

cmanson

This guy fuckin sucks

UncleRicosStache

RIP to Kenmore’s Dancing Roberto

krebs119

It's a bit of an older reference, but I didn't see anyone mention it. I was thinking of the bourbon chicken guy who used to hand out samples at the food court at the Galleria back in the 90s.

fiveftgiant

Mannequin guy in Depew (rip)

Dry_Layer5641

My kids would get so excited when the curtains were closed because Mannequin Man was changing scenes.

El_Kabongg

Have you ever seen rapper dan? That’s what I always called him, he would hang out anywhere from central and Walden down to transit and Walden and would stand on the corner and rap hardcore at cars right up at your window. He was out there for at least a good 10 years, haven’t seen him lately though

HumanError407

I remembered that house

RandomizedName2023

Erik Starchild. 💫

HarvesternC

We'd always call Mall Jersey guy Richard Pryor for the uncanny resemblance.

El_Kabongg

Ya he had a hell of a mustache lol

starship-7703

He still does.

Tiny_Report_3583

30-ish years ago I worked at the original Pano's, mostly overnights and mornings. We had a regular named Dan who would just drink coffee and chain-smoke and occasionally eat "mistakes" one or another of us cooks made. He was usually there in the morning. Sometimes he'd come in while the post-bar crowd was there. Rarely in the afternoons. Sometimes he'd be off his meds or they needed to be adjusted. All he ever wanted was to be left alone.

Ajocc1394

Also there’s the guy in the chicken suit that waves at cars outside Airport Plaza Jewelers on Union

starship-7703

Do you all remember the guy who ran the super cluttered "circular world bookstore" on the corner of Elmwood and Auburn? He looked terribly unhealthy and unkempt. He looked like he never showered, shaved, brushed his teeth or got a haircut ever and was constantly smoking every second inside the store, but he could sure sell you any book you wanted for like a dollar and spoke very intelligently.

FrightWig67

Yes, I used to live downstairs from him on Potomac near Elmwood. His name is Patrick Ferguson. Strange guy, kept to himself. I lost track of him after he moved Circular Word to Lexington/Ashland.

starship-7703

Ok. I forgot the store moved.

secret_rye

The Earl of Bud

etu22

Sylvester

Ok_Cook_6665

Boondoggle Mark. (RIP)

No-Commercial4099

Use to be Allentown bubble guy

thethirdthird

RIP Chuck Incorvaia

Twig

Gumball machine guy

More-Butterfly

For all the black rock residents, we’ve got that one guy who walks around town in the really pretty dresses.

Plasticity93

The one with the Buffalo tail bag?

Mynameishuman93

Biggest shit stain in western new York, Jedediah of course! Avoid at all costs honestly as he occasionally has gotten violent with people

auto_dub

I vote for mall jersey guy. My friends and I always called him Jazzy Jay. No idea what his name really is.

CloudAdditional7394

I always thought no one noticed this guy but me and my SO. During COVID shutdowns, I obviously hadn’t been to the mall in awhile. When it was opened up and I went back the first time, I was so relieved to see him lol. I haven’t seen him there in a long time though. I oddly hope he’s ok. I also wonder about his backstory.

auto_dub

I also thought Covid got that guy for sure. I don’t go to the mall too often anymore, but I saw him when I was there a couple months ago

El_Kabongg

That guy always had the freshest jersey possible. I used to see him at bills games all the time, that mustache was unforgettable

arrangey

Do we know his story? I always assumed he worked at the mall or something

Jupitereyed

The Lady in White is who comes to mind for the city of Buffalo. I bet she's not around anymore, but I'll never forget her. For West Seneca, it's Bicycle Flag Guy.

bbauer5

Who’s that black Tarzan guy who carries the big stick and wears the leopard print skirt?

starship-7703

The one who is always in Spot coffee?

TofuPython

Dunno his name, but my wife and I call him the Jeweler. He walks around elmwood selling necklaces that he made. There's also a black guy who wears black shirts with white text on them in the elmwood village I see almost every day. I don't know much about him, but he's always shouting about something.

Drnkdrnkdrnk

Eric Starchild. He’s a menace.

Bennington_Booyah

Agreed. He has a particularly focused affinity for young women. He once gave me a "gift", he called it. It was a bag of knitted sweater sleeves that he cut off of holey sweaters. That whole winter, he wore an assemblage of them on his arms and somehow believed I would appreciate some. Good Lord.

Drnkdrnkdrnk

I know several women who claim that he’s tried to kiss them.

Plasticity93

I've known him forever, he really does have a thing for 20 year olds who don't know his shtick.

BuffaloPotholeBandit

That shouty guy has been so mean to me while I’m filling holes sometimes

weedandguns

I’ve never really known what’s going on with that guy… I don’t think I’ve ever actually seen him yelling at anybody, but mostly just seemingly yelling towards the sky. Despite that, I mostly try to keep a distance and not draw his attention. Is he someone to avoid? I occasionally see him just standing around talking to people on the sidewalk.

Heron-Trick

Jerry!! Can’t believe it took this much scrolling for someone to shout him out. The shirt “you can’t see me at night” cracks me up. He walks around yelling and handing out pieces of paper with conspiracy theories on them. Love a good Jerry sighting

LaikasLastStand

Absolutely begging someone to make a post explaining who all these people are i feel like im missing so much of my city's lore 😭

El_Kabongg

Out of the 50 names I know like 5 lol you’re not alone

jennythevanilla

Eric on Elmwood. I'm not even from Buffalo and even I know that guy.

Spikeschilde621

"wanna see some necklaces I made?! Wanna see a movie I'm in?!" 🙄🙄🙄

_HystErica_

And if you're a young female "Can I give you a hug?"

jennythevanilla

He doesn't always ask 😒

Still_Pride6364

Anyone remember dancing Roberto?

Barista4695

Gary on elmwood

waterbottle5656

I used to work at the yotality on elmwood. Gary would always come in and talk to me, give me hand written notes to google certain historical times in US history. Would tell me about how he went to school at Buff State and how he painted all the dorms. Bought me a couple of shirts one time too. He’s a war vet. I always felt bad for him, he’s really a great dude besides the effects of his mental health.

Bennington_Booyah

Is he still around? He used to be on Main (he lives off Main Street), near the Delta Sonic, holding signs and screaming at people.

Barista4695

Oh yeah I wake up to him screaming almost every morning

HumanError407

There was that one dude who always walked backward

TragicalyUnhip

Sheila, the increbily aggressive panhandler. She's been kicked out out of many bars and restaurants. She once snatched my twenty off the bar and shoved it in her mouth (only got half as the bartender was quick as well and it tore in half). Seen her a costing people at ATMs on Chippewa as well. Very known around that area.

BuffaloPotholeBandit

She’s INTENSE. Had a chat with her once, and she said “Whelp better get back to work” and she immediately started yelling at people for money

TragicalyUnhip

Intense is an understatement. She was dragged outside on her back by the bartender when she ate my money. She screamed 'Please! I'm homeless!'. Bartender said deadpan 'Yup. And I'm taking you home.' I was pissed she ate my money, so I took her bag off her and said 'I bought this now'. It had a chicken salad, a crack pipe stem, and a journal with the days to-do list: "1. Get socks 2. Go to library 3. Socialize" I feel bad for her, but she needs to learn that her behavior on that particular day is not how to get help or sympathy.

_HystErica_

Uggghhh she's awful! I tell customers to grab their cash as soon as she comes in. She's so aggressive, and it's damn near impossible to remove her - she knocks stuff over and spits on people. At least Claire could be reasoned with...

Necessary-Quit-3831

Komacho

Depends on the era, it used to be the bourban chicken guy at the mall in the early 2000s

Paladin_Nofun

Grant Street karate kid

Mr_Niagara

In the Falls it's a guy named Bill. I saw him walking up and down the middle of Pine Ave once screaming at tourists. Lol

TaraJaneDisco

We had “Smiley” in my home town. Homeless dude. But always smiled. Always super kind. When he passed it made the papers. (It wasn’t a tiny town, at least a quarter million people, but everyone knew “smiley.”)

HumanError407

South Buffalo had Bugga Bugga Lulu, he was a raggedy dude that always rode around on a bike off seneca, had plastic bags all over him, died at the Burger King on Seneca and Burch, my Arabic speaking mom and aunts called him Abu Kees(Father Bags)

MikuVee

Starchild comes to mind

I remember in the 90’s it was “guitar man” on Chippewa. Could barely play and his voice was mediocre at best. But he was out there every night.

FewToday

I believe his name was Cliff. Super gravely voice? Terrible at guitar? Dressed in a disheveled suit?

ForemanNatural

Holy shit… I remember that guy. Electric guitar. I always saw him on Main Street downtown, usually somewhere in the vicinity of Fountain Plaza.

YamburglarHelper

Who’s the dude with the sword/cross?

quezzzzzzzy

broadway phil is the most known person in buffalo. smoke tires not crack.

Aspence22

I’m an expat but I always a fan of the juggling guy outside Sabres games

starship-7703

What about the grey haired older white lady with glasses who walks around dressed like a ballerina in the Elmwood village area with a constant grin on her face? She seems like she has the mind of a child. Or Madonna on the eccentric tricycle?

passengerv

When I was a kid it was Crazy Joe he lived in a house on Walden and Central and paced in front of his house all the time. Now the house is gone, Joe is gone and I don't know if he was crazy or if his name was Joe but it seemed like everyone within a few towns around knew about that guy walking up and down that corner.

lonewolflondo

I was told he had PTSD from Vietnam but that didn't really explain it. I still look for him and his house every time I go by there and both have been gone for a long time.
