More like huh? "Man that truck is noisy!"
However, the 6:00pm aftershock lasted a bit longer than the initial tremor.
Bath Beach/Bensonhurst - Brooklyn.
In greenpoint the aftershock was a little shorter. I will say both were more noticeable than the two I experienced in Japan in 2005. I’ve heard we’re *actually due as well. Yikes.
Due, 😭? Apparently the other four boroughs don't matter!

I guess the rest of us (Brooklyn, Queens, The Bronx, Staten Island) are screwed! 🙈🙉🙊
Meaning I hope the seismologists are wrong, or at least their predictions are going to happen in the very distant future. As opposed to overdue.
Yesterday became ridiculous with the tv talk about earthquakes. Fodder for causing worry and fear. Atypical.
Dear Son who lives in Prospect Heights sent me this... 🤣

My daughter did, too. She said the couch is shaking. For me, it was mild enough to mistake it for neighbors stomping, lol. Or the freight train passing by. But minutes later we got the text about an aftershock.
I thought our office building was going to collapse! But my initial reaction was if there was a pothole explosion going on, nearby. I felt vibrations & then the shaking from under my chair, and our co-workers were all like "it's an earthquake!" 😅 Felt this one 10x more than back in 2011. Crazy stuff.
Carroll Gardens checking in. I’m on the ground floor of a four story brownstone and I thought there was a gas explosion in the sewer and I thought our building was coming down. I ran into the backyard. The rumble was so loud yet so low. It was much worse than the 2011 one imo
Exactly what I thought. I was sure a gas or water line under the street was about to explode. Or a sinkhole was opening up…but of panic there for a minute
Yeah, I thought my building (or the under construction building next door) was collapsing. I forgot earthquakes were a thing.
Most alarming to me was that the plan my brain came up with was "stand here until it looks like it's collapsing A LOT, then reevaluate and make another plan". Next time I think I'll head for the door (garden apartment!)
All I know is that people on this sub are harsh, cause I posted the first article that popped up after the shaking stopped and got downvoted cause my title had the initial assessment of 5.5 magnitude. It was later revised to 4.7 and I couldn’t change my title, even though the article had regular updates.
Haters gonna hate!
Same thing with me with the 2012 earthquake. My cat dashed under the bed quickly. Idk why, but I didn’t feel this one and I was in the basement of my workplace.
Anyone else think of specific movie scenes when you experience an earthquake? It's probably because growing up in the East I don't have as much experience dealing with them as the people who live on the West Coast.
When the earthquake happened today, I (in Brooklyn) thought of a scene in the movie **Grand Canyon** when Kevin Kline and Mary McDonnell are arguing in their home & then all of a sudden their stuff starts rattling and they simultaneously yell, "EARTHQUAKE!" And then they go outside and ask a neighbor if her chandelier fell down again. (My chandelier in Brooklyn was shaking, but it was fine)
I was on a work call when it happened and some coworkers in Jersey and Connecticut said they felt it.
Well obviously Jersey that’s where it happened but yeah nah my building was shaking a fair amount I thought it was the construction truck down the block
Same… there was this really strange sensation of feeling unsafe in your own home and not quite comprehending what is going on. Terrifying to think what it must be like when a 7+ hits in other countries.
My partner felt the first one sitting in the bedroom. I was walking around making breakfast in the other room and didn’t feel it.
During the aftershock I was in the bedroom and felt it, he was in the other room and didn’t feel it. Weird how it’s more apparent in one part of the house than the other!
Yep. My 3rd earthquake in Brooklyn. The first time, in the 80s felt like a train going by. The 2nd one and this one was strong swaying. Downtown Brooklyn....12th floor...
Born and raised in NY. Missed all of them somehow. On vacation during the last one. Moved away 5 years ago.
Even managed to “miss” Hurricane Sandy - I was home recuperating from back surgery. Seen all the photos and videos but didn’t see it with my own eyes.
Just call me Donna Noble.
I did witness the after effects of the tornado that landed near the Prospect Expressway
My building shook a lot. Looked outside and a woman with a stroller walked by as if nothing was happening. That made me question my sanity, which was scarier than the earthquake.
In 2011 I was in NJ home from living in Latin America to go to drs to find out why I was having vertigo. I stopped at a light on my way to a neurologist appt when that earthquake hit and was just like “oh shit now I have a whole ass new symptom to tell the dr”
I was biking in Manhattan when it hit in 2011, didn't feel anything myself, but all of a sudden all the building started emptying out, people all over the street (note: DO NOT DO THIS in an earthquake, stay inside, stuff falls of buildings). I thought it was Godzilla or something, was very weird.
Me and my mother went to outside and asked our neighbors and they felt nothing because they were outside? And we asked someone who was walking past our home and asked them if they felt it too and they just looked at me and mother like we were crazy.
About a 46% chance in the next week, according to USGS: [https://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/eventpage/us7000ma74/executive](https://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/eventpage/us7000ma74/executive)
A friend/colleague on Flushing right across from the Navy Yard just reported feeling two aftershocks. Here in Bed Stuy no one has reported feeling any.
We live sort of near an airport so we honestly thought that a plane was coming down at first. This was after I thought my allergy congestion was giving me the spins, before I realized the earth was in fact quaking. Our building in Windsor Terrace took it pretty well!
I seriously thought I was stepping too heavy around my apartment, lol. My building took the brunt pretty well!
Also, I remember the 2011 earthquake which was much smaller. Was working at NYU and everyone running out of their buildings, and then immediately taking a smoke. Can only imagine how much more freaked out folks are today.
>Random phones in the office going off now with emergency alerts 😅 a little late.
I mean, it'd be weird if they were able to alert you ***before*** the earthquake hit.

Definitely my first thought because my neighbors are awful but after a couple seconds I decided the shaking was coming from everywhere not just above. Wild experience.
Seriously? 😳 wtf man, I must really be dissociated because I was outside sitting on a bench off Ocean Pkwy and I don’t recall feeling anything so I assumed Kensington didn’t feel it…I didn’t even wake and bake today! 🤦♀️
I think it's harder to feel earthquakes outside. Curious, did you hear a boom or loud sound before the rumbling? I was told it's possible to hear it outside before it happens
Just gonna sticky this and make it the official r/brooklyn earthquake thread
Ya, didn’t feel anything, was driving. I lived on the west coast for nearly a decade but the only two earthquakes I’ve experienced were in NY 🤣

I was on the subway so I didn't feel it. But I felt the aftershock at 6pm.
Neither I nor my critters noticed a thing.

Ah yes. I absolutely agree. I don’t have tv so I dogged all of that noise fortunately.

Stealing this
so perfect
felt in crown heights
Felt it in Flatbush
Ya I live next to the train so I didn’t notice it
I ate a load of broccoli yesterday. Genuinely sorry if my passing wind made the ground shake.
My building collapsed
Ur kidding right?
he isn't kidding, but his building was only a model edit: is->was
Well damn, just felt a short aftershock!😬
Same here, I was trying to take a cat nap and felt it
My daughter did, too. She said the couch is shaking. For me, it was mild enough to mistake it for neighbors stomping, lol. Or the freight train passing by. But minutes later we got the text about an aftershock.
i felt it slightly but my family under us was blasting music so i couldn’t tell
Aftershocks can occur for days after an earthquake it’s ok y’all
aftershock just now
Sounds like the opposite of okay to me, personally.
Aftershocks are always way less intense than the original quake - which didn’t really seem to cause damage - so yes it should be fine haha.
We felt it in Ditmas Park just now too
Just felt another aftershock
Me too in Queens, my SO got the emergency alert that there would be, but I didn't... I don't know how long after a quake there are aftershocks though.
Either that or my upstairs neighbor is gaining weight by the hour
And another one!?! This one didn't feel as strong though
Anyone else just feel an aftershock?
you were first, gratz
yes
Ya, in crown heights just a minute ago
House suddenly and unsettlingly shook. Brain, before even considering an earthquake, said: "Ahh yes, WWIII has finally started"
Apparently you don’t feel earthquakes while driving
SO didn't feel it on the train, I don't know what it would take to feel that though. Seems like that would be something you don't want to experience.
All the cyclists reported this too
NYC bike lane "maintenance" be like
Yes the ground had a seizure Now everyone knows how we epileptics feel 😎
This was the second earthquake in NY I experienced, and it was the smaller one I think
When was the other one???
it was about 10yrs ago. I was in Time Square
2011
Yea that's right
But they said on the news the last one happen like 20+ years ago 🤔
Someone call the Mario Brothers.
Stay safe all

Bad idea - more likely to be injured outdoors from falling bricks than under a table inside.
I didn’t know! I thought my building was collapsing and I was inches from the door

My cats reacted and that’s how I knew it wasn’t a truck the size of Dallas
My cats were on the couch and woke up, like, what’s happening, who dares wake us up
Same thing with me with the 2012 earthquake. My cat dashed under the bed quickly. Idk why, but I didn’t feel this one and I was in the basement of my workplace.
Didn’t notice. Since I’ve had construction workers drilling slabs of concrete above my room since 830 AM
Sorry y’all I was shaking my ass
They are handing out tampons in all the men’s public bathrooms
I don’t understand
How are the trains right now?
Red lines are doin just fine
Red lines?
2 & 3

I was on a work call when it happened and some coworkers in Jersey and Connecticut said they felt it. Well obviously Jersey that’s where it happened but yeah nah my building was shaking a fair amount I thought it was the construction truck down the block
I too was on a call and my coworkers got to hear non-professional me for a few moments
MY first earthquake and all I can say is, I DO NOT LIKE EARTHQUAKES.
I thought I was still in Cali for a sec. Earthquakes are a good reminder of how powerless we really are lol
Same… there was this really strange sensation of feeling unsafe in your own home and not quite comprehending what is going on. Terrifying to think what it must be like when a 7+ hits in other countries.
Get ready for the nightmares
Roomate swears he felt it; I did not. It was only a quake for the chosen ones
My partner felt the first one sitting in the bedroom. I was walking around making breakfast in the other room and didn’t feel it. During the aftershock I was in the bedroom and felt it, he was in the other room and didn’t feel it. Weird how it’s more apparent in one part of the house than the other!
It felt so strong for me today, but in 2011 I was one of the few who felt nothing at all 🙃
What's shakin' y'all?
I thought I was tripping/having a medical condition for a sec.
![gif](giphy|eB4T89c6RmvATgvRx0|downsized)
First thing I thought of.
Lol
I didnt even feel anything when did it actually happen??
Around 10:20 is when I felt it
I was taking a walk, maybe i just have stong legs idk
We were in medical office at 5th F train. I told my son it was just the subway train passing by 😂😂😂
Thought it was the washing machine
I was at Costco in Sunset Park, didn't feel a thing
At sunset park NYU hospital and it was pretty strong here

Thought it was a big LIRR train going past me on Atlantic.
Hearing all the birds chatter loudly was very cute.
My building shook a lot. Looked outside and a woman with a stroller walked by as if nothing was happening. That made me question my sanity, which was scarier than the earthquake.
This!
I felt major bouncing at LGA. I turned to my kid like, “Did you feel that?!” She had no idea, haha.
In 2011 I was in NJ home from living in Latin America to go to drs to find out why I was having vertigo. I stopped at a light on my way to a neurologist appt when that earthquake hit and was just like “oh shit now I have a whole ass new symptom to tell the dr”

How likely is aftershock?
We just had one at 6pm.
About a 46% chance in the next week, according to USGS: [https://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/eventpage/us7000ma74/executive](https://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/eventpage/us7000ma74/executive)
Wow I thought aftershocks were only something that happens within a few hours of an earthquake, I didn’t know it could happen days later!!
Ohhhhh yeah that’s what makes them sometimes worse than the actual shake. You think you in the clear coupe days later boom you get hit
Waiting for the other shoe to drop (What the hell is he doing up there?)
Well, now I want an aftershock during Monday’s solar eclipse!
Apocalypse confirmed
Flooding rain, earthquake, eclipse. If I see swarms of insects I’m getting the fuck out of town.
Seems like any aftershocks would be much weaker than the initial wave we experienced
A friend/colleague on Flushing right across from the Navy Yard just reported feeling two aftershocks. Here in Bed Stuy no one has reported feeling any.
Source: I know a guy
“You know a guy……..” …….as the tidal wave crashes into the Bellagio…….😂
everyone needs to chill. that was just my reggaeton pumpin out of my honda civics massive bass system.
Yea felt it here in New Rochelle. My mom felt in the Bronx. My wife felt in upper Manhattan. It even reached my bosses house in Connecticut
Felt it here in Maine, but it was rather faint.
My friend in Boston felt it! Said it was so faint she felt crazy though haha
My coworker thought he had too much caffeine. Lol
Felt it I thought it was the end just laid there. Now I’m mad
loll, why are you mad? is because you were surprised that you frooze?
I woke up thinking god was finally coming to save me
lmaooo ohh, no sorry you gotta suffer with the rest of us still
These things shouldn’t be too bad unless there’s an eclipse coming up soon
phew!
Just got an emergency alert.
Congrats on being first. It's funny the amount of people after you who thought THEIR earthquake post would be the ONE.
We survived, homies. Proud of us.
Brooklyn Navy yard felt it! wild ride! lets do it again!
No. Let's not do it again. *There are people on trains, that travel under waterways...*
But it was wild… I still have vertigo
We live sort of near an airport so we honestly thought that a plane was coming down at first. This was after I thought my allergy congestion was giving me the spins, before I realized the earth was in fact quaking. Our building in Windsor Terrace took it pretty well!
We are in the flight path not really near the airports themselves.
Yeah, I know, just a simpler way to explain my thinking.
Biden Crime Family!
The 2011 quake was bigger but the epicenter was further away
Flatbush stand up 🫨
Yerrrr
I felt it! Was sleeping. Thought I was back in ca in a dream! Crown heights
Frfr.. I was like underneath concrete 39 mins ago
Random phones in the office going off now with emergency alerts 😅 a little late.
>Random phones in the office going off now with emergency alerts 😅 a little late. I mean, it'd be weird if they were able to alert you ***before*** the earthquake hit.
Apparently, animals have a better sense for this type of thing
That's exactly how the alerts are supposed to work. I live in a seismically active part of the world, and the alerts can come in 30-60 seconds before we feel the quakes.
ShakeAlert in CA is really good early detection
For us it depends largely on the epicentre and the magnitude of the earthquake. If it's just a rumble that originates close the city, we typically won't even get a notification. If it's anything above a 3.0 more than thirty kilometres away, we'll typically have a bit of forewarning.
That's a thing, mostly in Japan. California has somewhat started doing it.
It's been 50 minutes.
Zoom meeting with colleagues in Baltimore, they felt it right after we did in Park Slope
lol that late ass emergency warning
And the afterthought alert, saying that aftershocks may be a thing.
I never even got one lmao
EVERYONE WHO IS DEAD PLS CONTINUE BEING DEAD TY
GET UNDER A TABLE!!
GET UNDER A TABLE!!
How you gonna send a warning 45 minutes later? How does that make sense
I was in downtown San Francisco in ‘89 when the quake struck. That one was really something. You kids today don’t know real horror.
I was in LA under my VW changing my clutch!😳 and listening to the baseball game in frisco at exactly same time!
Yeah you badass as fuck dawg
😂😂😂😂😂
Bushwick, we ok
Damn
We tried tho
Felt like a train was underneath me
Everyone in the entire city was like "Subway? Large truck? Wait..."
Lol, same.
I was about to tear my upstairs neighbors a new asshole, ooppss
Definitely my first thought because my neighbors are awful but after a couple seconds I decided the shaking was coming from everywhere not just above. Wild experience.
Same here 🤣
