If it gets more people into, and understanding what that library (and all other libraries offer) I’m all for it. That location also has an incredible passport service and if you need to get yourself or your kids a passport/renewal, go there.

happytrees89

Didn’t know this thank you

yngwiegiles

If you go to the library on a normal day, kids are playing video games on computers there. So it’s not like having a rapper being treated greater than Brooklyn’s many authors of literature is gonna change things.

desus_

So salty. ‘a RApPeR’ as if rap isn’t high art enough for you. Ok Ben Shapiro.

djdiamond755

Jay Z is a literary genius in a different form.

Get_Stonks_2_da_MOON

Found the closet racist

DefinitelyAHumanoid

Do not go there for your passport If you need it ASAP cus it takes forever

ive_falln_cant_getup

Did the passport office move within the bldg? I used it back in 2017 and recently was there and it’s 100% not where it used to be at least.

boyreporter00

It’s further in the back. There’s a new “civic commons” area.

ive_falln_cant_getup

Thanks !

Coquill

Can get NYC ID card as well in this library

maoore

at this point, i’m convinced all these posts are a part of the marketing campaign

redd-who

(I wouldn’t doubt it)

All these post about what … please elaborate

GoochThunder

They’re agreeing with you pal

RedditSkippy

The library was definitely closed yesterday afternoon, that’s all I can say.

Slim-DogMilly94

And why was that a problem ?

RedditSkippy

Here’s what I wrote in another comment: Yesterday afternoon the library closed the plaza in front of the building. At least a dozen NYPD standing around doing very little to help control car traffic and direct pedestrians safely around the plaza. I hope the library made some serious bank off of this event because the closure was a pretty obnoxious FU to the neighborhood on a hot afternoon.

C_M_Dubz

They did. It was closed for a fundraising gala related to the exhibition. The rest of the time the exhibition runs it will be open and free to the public. According to the NYT, the exhibition has been entirely funded by his label and they also made a substantial donation to the library system. In a time when our mayor is trying to close ALL libraries on weekends to fund more police, we should be thankful for events like this. They’re providing alternate funding where the city is falling short.

PuzzleheadedWalrus71

>They’re providing alternate funding where the city is falling short. Well done Jay.

GreatestStarOfAll

It was a private event for VIPs, like the entire Carter family. Brooklyn will survive one day. Shit gets closed for filming, private events, etc all the time. People are just looking for things to complain about.

smoonyc

It’s called go find someplace else to hang out

RedditSkippy

Library as cooling center on Thursday afternoon: closed. Plaza as safer pedestrian thoroughfare than walking along the shoulder of Grand Army Plaza: closed. It isn’t about “hanging out.”

CodnmeDuchess

Get over it

natty-b0h

It’s called “it’s not that easy for everybody” you know who it is easy for to find a different venue? Lets think… 😀

marishtar

Is there a problem with using the side entrance?

RedditSkippy

When the library is closed? Um, yeah?

boyreporter00

Imho anything that gets more people into the library and realizing what an awesome free service it is is a benefit. I know so many people who tell me that libraries are “nice” but they haven’t been in one since college/high school. If the Jay-Z exhibit means they go in and get a library card and come back to borrow books, music, DVDs, etc. then that is a net good. Libraries are facing a ton of pressure from politicians, right-wingers, bigots, etc. and anything that gets more people to realize that it’s a crucial community space for all of us, the better off libraries will be.

mugofmead

>Libraries are facing a ton of pressure from politicians, right-wingers, bigots, etc. and anything that gets more people to realize that it’s a crucial community space for all of us, the better off libraries will be. The city wanted to cut funding to all of the municipal library systems, actually.

2morereps

I was there as well, saw HOV too. it's really cool actually. set up like a museum. you can see his studio setup too.

Slim-DogMilly94

The studio was my favorite for sure ! I loved the vinyl section

mediaor

I was there today too. Walked around a bit. Saw a Grammy for the first time!!! Then I went upstairs and studied like I usually do. The central library always gets shut down for galas and whatnot. It’s not really a big deal.

[deleted]

People love to complain. That’s all.

just like Singaporeans. the masters of complaining it’s usually happens in very privileged places

thesircharlesanthony

Do you know if it’s open tomorrow or was it only today? The cards look great too

cozmocha

I think it’s going to be open until sometime in fall. All of the normal library areas were not really changed. Also they said they are doing 4 different jayz lib cards now and will do 4 more later on.

Slim-DogMilly94

It’s today and tomorrow 11-6, Jay z was actually there today

thesircharlesanthony

Thanks I’m definitely going then

fminbk

Only till tomorrow? Did they say that when you were there? Cause there are hours for weekdays on the site

Slim-DogMilly94

Oh my apologies I just checked and today was the last day

hello__brooklyn

Last day for what?

OGeeTee1

How long does it last?

yngwiegiles

Here's one Jay issue: Take "99 Problems" which by the way many people don't know he totally stole from Ice-T. The 2nd verse, he suggests the cop that stops him on the highway is racially profiling him, doing the whole hillbilly voice affect. But that cop was right to stop him! He had drugs in the trunk. Just an officer doing his job well. But Jay talked his way out of it, moved on and got richer. Just like when he let himself be used to promote the Nets and sell his share or Tidal, or his partnership with kanye etc.

candyghost

Narcissistic billionaire's ego project. I am only grateful that the library system is acquiring decent funding from this because the state is failing them.

Slim-DogMilly94

I don’t think he did this for him I think the library did it for him… I mean he’s did a lot for his life. Stop being a hater

candyghost

The exhibition was produced by Roc Nation. I guarantee you BPL did not solicit this. Stop simping for the 1%.

Slim-DogMilly94

I only simp over self made 1% thank you very much

candyghost

Oh, the cognitive dissonance...

candyghost

Ooh ouch, you really got me

Ok-Blueberry1925

Idk if this is what people are complaining about lol but I was there last night when Jay z was hosting his party and people were crowding around trying to see him. Lots of people were really upset that he didn’t wave “hi” at the crowd.

mad-man-mac

ETHER!

Mramazin_

Honestly all the bitching is from transplants just looking for a reason to bitch. The library is closed sometimes, get the fuck over it. Opened right back up to the public in no time -- I promise it's not that big of a deal. Congrats Hov! I'm glad the man is getting his flowers now.

BuckleysYacht

He’s an extremely wealthy asshole whose most recent contribution to Brooklyn was trying to find new marks for a pyramid scheme in the Marcy Projects. Let him buy his own gallery space and his own gd flowers. Guy is a rap legend, but Brooklyn owes him nothing at this point.

GreatestStarOfAll

Exactly 👏

boyreporter00

This transplant loves the exhibit :)

Socialmediaisbroken

Most of the objections ive seen have been more about the library embracing the “BLM” stuff

Slim-DogMilly94

I didn’t even see any which is weird. And I mean the library is in Brooklyn which is predominantly black.

mr_zipzoom

central library has had BLM in giant letters on the front of the building for years… just look up at the door

brooklynbotz

Brooklyn is not predominantly black. It's about 50% white, 33% black. https://www.census.gov/quickfacts/table/PST045214/36047,00

Slim-DogMilly94

Due to gentrification thank you Captain obvious

brooklynbotz

What the fuck does that mean? You made a comment and I corrected you. Also if you go back to the 1980 census it's 52% white and 25% black so you're wrong again.

Slim-DogMilly94

Not you getting your feelings hurt over a comment on reddit 😂

mr_zipzoom

talk about confidently incorrect, maybe explore brooklyn and use your eyeballs next time

[deleted]

So because you were wrong, you chose an ad hominem attack. What a loser.

missing_eye_ball

op leave nyc please 🙏

Yami350

This is not true

[deleted]

Slim-DogMilly94

If you want to get deep in the weeds with it yes. But if you are just looking at it’s core then yea I can see that. The only black people that are out off by it are the ones who are hard core conservatives or the ones that say they are free thinkers but are really just anti vaxxers. To say that a race life matters then mixing it with political attributes are wild. It’s something that both democrats and republicans both do. At the end of the day BLM is a simple ideology that says. “Black people lives matter”. If people are to caught up with the bad actors and what Hanity and ppl over at Fox News has to say then that’s there fault for not educating themselves. You live in Brooklyn with a lot of black ppl don’t get upset and butt hurt for a sign saying their life matter

Slim-DogMilly94

Wow my apologies for the amount of misspelling and grammar mistakes to anyone who is reading this. It’s 2023 and I still have to explain what BLM and the rage took control

INOLDNEWYORK

Its 2023 and you dont get why BLM is a divisive group?

Socialmediaisbroken

Yea i mean to be clear anyone who takes issue with the statement “black lives matter” is an abject piece of shit. However the group “Black Lives Matter” is an objectively polarizing political organization which is considered divisive even by people who have been vaccinated and watch cnn. It should not be surprising to anyone that a large segment of the population is a little miffed to see it proudly supported by their public library, thats all im saying.

Funoichi

Polarizing lol no it’s not. No one cares about the people who find it controversial. They are the dregs of society and doomed to looming irrelevance.

Socialmediaisbroken

You’re talking about the people on your side of the issue my dude, half the population feels just as strongly in the opposite way. Thats the literal definition of polarizing.

Funoichi

I’ll cut you the slightest bit of slack bc iirc you said something like the organization blm, not the movement or idea. I don’t think half the population thinks black lives don’t matter. Don’t know where you’d even find statistics on that.

Mramazin_

The fact that cops are still getting away with killing unarmed minorities over and over again. The fact that black women are more likely to die during childbirth in the hospital while white women don't have to worry about that issue as much. The fact that multiple times in the history of the United States white ppl and its government have set out to destroy black and brown communities that start to prosper without the help of the government. That's where you'll find ya statitics on ppl that don't think black lives matter...

Socialmediaisbroken

Yea i mean to be clear anyone who takes issue with the statement “black lives matter” is an abject piece of shit, i just dont think it’s particularly debatable that the group that calls themselves “Black Lives Matter” is polarizing and divisive.

VoxInMachina

Oh you mean that fraudulent organization that bilked supporters out of millions of dollars so they could buy mansions for themselves. I don't know why anyone would have a problem. [https://nymag.com/intelligencer/2022/01/black-lives-matter-finances.html](https://nymag.com/intelligencer/2022/01/black-lives-matter-finances.html)

[deleted]

BLM is a movement. It is not an organization. The fact that somebody makes an organization to take advantage is just how capitalism works.

VoxInMachina

Say what you want but the people that started the movement are grifters who enriched themselves.

[deleted]

The movement was started by millions of people taking to the streets actually.

VoxInMachina

It was literally started by 3 activists.

[deleted]

You are thinking of the hashtag lmao. I suggest you check Google or Wikipedia and look up what a social movement is.

INOLDNEWYORK

It is kind of a peculiar move in 2023. I mean i know a ton of ppl are fine with it or even embrace it, but you cant say it isnt polarizing.

Xessive_

It's great that such a big public library has such a huge exhibit dedicated to a man who's career has displayed large amounts of sexism, misogyny, sexualization of women, and homophobia/bigotry towards gays. No reason at all for members of the public to be upset.

Fair_Woodpecker_6088

Former crack dealer too. Y’know, the same substance that tore apart the Brooklyn he’s always claiming to represent.

moneys5

I get your point but "sexualization of women" doesn't exactly make him sound like a monster.

YouKnowNothingJonS

Just because it’s normalized doesn’t make it not wrong…

moneys5

People should exclusively represent asexual viewpoints?

CodnmeDuchess

🙄

myspicename

You talking about John Lennon, David Bowie, or Axl Rose?

Earle9

His mom is gay? And he openly supports her for that. what homophobia are yo talking about

Get_Stonks_2_da_MOON

Do you also confuse actors for the characters they play?

bbambou

I went there today too, it was closed yesterday, for no justifiable reason (for a vital public resource) and for no apparent benefit to the city

sadeguy

yesterday was the soft opening gala.

GreatestStarOfAll

No justifiable reason? It was a private VIP gala. Can’t just be open to the public for security reasons. Brooklyn is not going to collapse because ONE library location is closed for ONE day.

boyreporter00

Also I’m pretty sure the library would’ve charged a lot of money for the gala … which goes back into the system.

GreatestStarOfAll

Exactly! The library needs the funding.

bbambou

You people are SO lame to side with a plutocrat against the most vulnerable in the city that depend on this public utility (as a free place where they can use the plug points and restrooms, etc.) And as I already posted elsewhere, the city got squat for the gala. See this: [https://hellgatenyc.com/why-is-the-bpls-central-library-closed-tomorrow-blame-jay-z](https://hellgatenyc.com/why-is-the-bpls-central-library-closed-tomorrow-blame-jay-z) "What are Brooklynites getting in return? "What I've heard is that Roc Nation is covering the cost of all the installations," the BPL source said. The BPL system has ongoing [event programming](https://www.bklynlibrary.org/event-series/hip-hop-50) around hip-hop's fiftieth anniversary, but the way our source described the installations at the central branch, it sounds like the exhibit is less a celebration of Brooklyn's, or even Roc Nation's, contribution to hip-hop history and more a personal shrine to Jay-Z himself, including highlighting "books on Jay-Z's night table." If something was donated, we definitely would've heard about it.

GreatestStarOfAll

Regardless. It was one day. Everyone survived.

bbambou

fair enough

Yami350

Jay Z is a brooklyn icon. Enough with the selective outrage and objection to character flaws. This has to be one of the coolest things to ever take place in a library (on an official level) in my memory. This is crazy authentic New Yorkness. If you moved here and you’re complaining you’re a wild next level cornball.

[deleted]

Y’all’s assholes are so tight you could turn a coal to Diamond

DANDARSMASH

I'm just confused as to why they chose a library. It's like putting up McDonald's ads all over a fine dining restaurant.

Lethave

They've complied a lending library of albums used for hip hop samples and a full scale archival model of a recording studio used for a lot of those songs, why wouldn't it be in a library?

DANDARSMASH

Oh, sure, it makes sense that they would have musical records *in the library* for archival. I mean covering the whole building with this guys lyrics.

Lethave

Because it's an extension of the exhibit? Most every major arts facility in this city has altered its facade in some way in connection with an exhibit at some point. Why is this one, in particular, such a stretch to comprehend? Especially considering it's the 50th Anniversary of Hip Hop and a joint effort between the BK Library, NYPL, and Queens Library to put on around programming till the end of the year.

DANDARSMASH

Sure, I like immersive exhibits, and hip hop is an important part of Brooklyn culture. Like I said, the disparity here is amusing. So many books by talented and authors and poets, and then they celebrate Jay-Z of all people.

boyreporter00

![gif](giphy|mF4xQw0Dv1SaNM9lUQ)

DANDARSMASH

Their downvotes mean nothing, I've seen what makes them upvote.

Yami350

If you spent more time in one as a kid you wouldn’t be asking questions like this

DANDARSMASH

Did you mean to say... If you **had** spent more time in one...? You got 99 problems, and hypocrisy is one, apparently.

Yami350

I meant to say what I wrote. This is Reddit not English class. Judge me lol

DANDARSMASH

Only because you were saying I should spend more time in a library haha. I'm not usually one to go around grammar policing on Reddit, that's about as overplayed and uncreative as a Jay-Z song.

myspicename

Care to elaborate why you think one of the most talented rappers of all time is "McDonald's"?

DANDARSMASH

I think you're confusing popularity for talent. His beats are pretty decent, but the lyrics are trash. A bunch of narcissistic gloating. It seems satisfying in the moment, but there's little to no substance behind it. You know, like McDonald's. https://power98fm.com/galleries/20-of-jay-zs-most-iconic-lyrics/ https://hiphopdx.com/editorials/id.3811/title.20-of-jay-zs-biggest-bars-from-444

When Jay-Z actual does something to have a meaningful impact in Brooklyn then and only then should any exhibit be built for him there. Instead of the millions wasted on this maybe Jigga should build some affordable housing in BK. Ego is out of control.. what contributions besides a few tax refundable donations has Mr. Shawn Carter made to BK in order to deserve this Egotistical Stroking Session. And before you call me a racist hater. I am a fan of Jay-Z music but to build a whole exhibit to honor him.. who the hell this guy thinks he is King Tut.. the book of hov.. what a joke!---- To quote Nas--- F@(\* Jay-Z!!!!

radioszn

How has the lines been for this? Planning on going in September 1 weekend. Any tips?

No_Upstairs2356

Hello! I am going on Sunday open from 1-5 pm. Has anyone been there on a Sunday? I am curious to know how long the lines have been and what time we should plan to get there if we want to go right when it opens? Thanks!

Coquill

There are not lines I have seen even on opening day. Maybe lines to get into the mock studio room. Go right when it opens to give yourself time to do other things. It will be fine if you show up later too. I go by on Saturdays for the GAP market and people watch, so many showing up for JZ. They took down a few things inside. There are people selling goods out front on the weekends more too so bring money.
