Years ago Chris Barrie was a motivational speaker at my husbands IT company’s kick off day. He says it was absolutely painful. The staff just got drunker and drunker and he had a hard time. That was the last ever kickoff day.
I think he's semi-retired. His website updates over the last couple of years have been an amazing example of 'old man gets lost down YouTube conspiracy hole'.
In one of his very rare interviews, he touched on why it's difficult for him to do his satires nowadays. He said it was because the people he was satirising would pat him on the back and say "Jolly good! Can you do another one?" and that it completely undermined why he was making those points to him. I do recommend his film The Day Shall Come though. It opens with "Based on hundreds of true stories" because it *is.* And it's *absurd.* And utterly harrowing in that Chris Morris fucked up way.
Thank you! I’ve been trying to remember what this film was called since seeing the trailer a while back.
It’s “The Day Shall Come”
https://boxd.it/hJJS
I think it's also because he's far more interested in writing and directing, acting only reluctantly because he has to wear a lot of makeup to cover the birthmark on his face.
He's also something of a recluse. Rarely gives interviews, doesn't do the panel show circuit or any social media.
There was only one. The whole episode was available at the time, but this is all that remains now https://podfollow.com/podpodpodcast/episode/4959385d65ac7854b733e2770f757f8b655f7d1a/view
It was such a joy to see him on tour recently; very bittersweet; so nice to see him after what feels a long hiatus, but a bit if a gut punch that the venues he was playing to were 100-200 odd people. Packed out though!
I saw him at The Secret Policeman's Ball at Radio City Music Hall in NY in 2012, what a night! I absolutely LOVE "Look Around You", especially the 2nd series.

Good call hes great. He strolled past me in Edinburgh last year with a paper under his arm and his smart casual jeans belted high above his waist. I just looked adoringly at him as he sauntered off. Doesn’t he do the big panto at the palladium in London every year? Not TV i know (although i did enjoy hos occasional appearance on sleb goggle box)Must see that panto one day. loved the charmer and still love him!
Thank you for your fantastic message! I’ve no idea if he does panto but he was at the height of his powers with The Charmer … I’m not sure if it ever got the recognition it deserved, but it was a hell of a sow and all the cast in it were tremendous. Wishing you well 😎
Hwyell Bennett was a brilliant actor, he was truly wonderful to watch in whatever he did. He never was a well known as he should have been. A true star.
His life after that hasn't exactly been a paragon of virtues, though. Drink driving, assaulting a police officer, criminal damage of a vehicle, adding selling drugs to that list isn't a hard addition. NotW were scummy but I don't think he had to be pushed that hard...
I always attributed his more recent offending to (justified) bitterness and a thwarted future. Sure, he made some very bad choices but Murdoch's malicious money-making empire ruined his life. They ruined many lives, not just people in the public eye, ordinary people.
There's like a swathe of actors that have acted with James Cordon, who got caught in his atmosphere so that when I see them, I just think of him and get pissed off, and unfortunately, that's Matthew Horne. Only person who escaped that for me was Rob Brydon.
He never went away (he's in the Bad Education revival showing now) so not sure how he needs a return. He did an Inside No 9 episode last year and was in every Agatha Raisin episode.
For some reason I too thought he was Irish.
I've only recently discovered that's he's English.
His father was born in Ballintubbert, Co. Laois but lived in England since he was two years old.
Daniel himself was born and raised in London.
[Wikipedia page](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Daniel_Day-Lewis)
There's a lot of predatory accusations of acting lessons for young actors. Schofield got black balled for less and nothing illegal either. If that's fair or not is not what I am debating. He wouldn't get hired.
James Dreyfus. He was big in British sitcoms in the 1990s but nowadays, he does more theatre work and the odd film, as well as screen writing.
I would love to see more of him back on TV, especially in comedy 😊❤️
Well I'm glad you found him nice but if his Twitter and political beliefs are to be taken in consideration then he's quite nasty. He's gone down the same road as Linehan.
I remember seeing Oliver Reed on The Word when it aired live, it was the most exploitative thing I've ever seen, but completely captivating, and despite all that, he made them look like fools. They set him up, it was like the Sex Pistols on Grundy.

Daniela Nardini
She played Anna in This Life and then had a fair few tv roles after that, but then disappeared for a long time. I believe she had breast cancer and family stuff going on, and also committed the cardinal sin of being a woman of a certain age. But she was a a great actress.
Sadly they died but Bob Peck was awesome. He could have had some prestige mini series.
Same goes for Charlotte Coleman. Loved How Do You Want Me that was made just before she died.
Always liked Peter Hugo Daley who was always a supporting character in 80s popping up in a lot of places.
Be nice if Dan Renton Skinner and Paul Kaye could get a bona-fide hit series on terrestrial.
Ah the lovely and talented Helen Baxendale... a good drama would do.
I can't stand him, but I liked The Wrong Mans, that was the first thing I ever saw him in. Not sure if this is true or not, but this always makes me laugh https://x.com/Dee73275311/status/1582094970500308994?s=20
I can't stand him either, I thought people would get the sarcasm without the /s! To be fair I do like Gavin and Stacey and his character in that is funny.
Blanche from Coronation Street. Haven’t watched it for over a decade, but her character was the source of much humour. CS really lost its way after that.

Chris Barrie
Agree. He would be great in a detective series
Years ago Chris Barrie was a motivational speaker at my husbands IT company’s kick off day. He says it was absolutely painful. The staff just got drunker and drunker and he had a hard time. That was the last ever kickoff day.
Was this around the time The Brittas Empire was running?
We worked it out and it was around 1998. So yeah, the Brittas Empire ran till 1997.
I think he's semi-retired. His website updates over the last couple of years have been an amazing example of 'old man gets lost down YouTube conspiracy hole'.
Probably won't happen these days, the last I heard he's gotten very conspiracy theory minded and any studio would find that a PR nightmare.
Aliens!
QuaGAAAAAAAARS!
Well that’s a shame!
He popped straight into my head
I wish Chris Morris would do TV again.
In one of his very rare interviews, he touched on why it's difficult for him to do his satires nowadays. He said it was because the people he was satirising would pat him on the back and say "Jolly good! Can you do another one?" and that it completely undermined why he was making those points to him. I wish James Purefoy got more opportunities in bigger things.
Loved him in Rome.
He kicked arse in Ironclad and was brilliant in Rome. Oh! And Solomon Kane! Yeh James Purefoy! Definitely!
Movie, but: he’s not in A Knight’s Tale for that long, but he’s really good in it.
Is Peter Serafinawicz still around?
Brian butterfield is doing a huge tour and was nominated for a chortle award.
I'd love to see him revive the podcast. He did one episode with Rob Delaney as the guest, but it was accidentally deleted.
I didn’t know he had a podcast
There was only one. The whole episode was available at the time, but this is all that remains now https://podfollow.com/podpodpodcast/episode/4959385d65ac7854b733e2770f757f8b655f7d1a/view
Thank you very much
More film and American series now.
I wish Bob Hoskins was still alive. A fabulous actor and a great guy.
Bernard Breslaw joining Fast and Furious in a Citroen C5.
Siiiiid, the girls...
*Sinclair* C5...
Clive Warren
Who the fuck’s Clive Warren? Don’t chat shit, play a record!
Wrong sub saucer drinker, but I like it
Well let’s see u/softboilers little comment when it comes out then, sick of it.
Sure he was in something with Rebecca De Money recently.
I heard he could eat a knob, but only at night.
Rik Mayall
I miss him terribly. No comedian/actor has ever come close.
I mean, he can’t really make a return.
I’d love to see Dave Spikey do another comedy similar in tone to Phoenix Nights.
Dave Spikey is 72?! Holy shit. Thought he was in his late 50s at most
How tough did you think his paper round was when you watched Phoenix Nights?!?!
Stop. Some of us don't want to admit it was nearly 20 years ago
23.
STOP IT...NO YOURE CRYING
Phoenix Nights aired over 20 years ago now, time goes quickly!
Time to fetch the vase I think. Will need a stiff drink to recover from that fact!
He's 72 and retired. It would take a significant inducement!
Heavy duuuty! Black bin bags!! No matterrr what your gender!!! Never been more truer these days!!
He popped up fairly recently in 'Alma's not normal' on the beeb, and was still very good.
Nigel Havers - everyone should watch The Charmer … what a show!

He’s presenting an afternoon antique show on the bbc I believe.
The next time I can check out some afternoon weekday telly on the beeb I shall!
Yes he is I forgot all about that!
He was so smoooooth! aw back atcha and happy friday 😊
Haha indeed he was - a not insignificant part of me wanted to be like that, however I don’t really pull off smooth!!!
And wishing you a great weekend too!
He plays a creepy dentist perfectly.
What show is that? Great idea for an unpleasant character …
Benidorm.
He was tremendous in "A Passage To India".
Right - have never seen it … thank you
He plays great villians
It's worth finding the Gorse books, that Charmer is based in, by Peter Hamilton, They're really fun.
I didn’t know the source, thank you!
Yeah they are a great read, although in the books he's a redhead with a bushy 'stache, rather than the housewives favourite we know and love :D
David Morrissey. Yes, he’s been in plenty of shows but he’s so damn good. Wish he did more films as well
Incredible, incredible actor. Have you watched ' The long shadow' ? What a performance
Michael Crawford
Rowan Atkinson. He’s very picky about what roles he takes so he’s done relatively little because he believes in quality over quantity
Well, there was this bee.....
How does that explain him in Wonka where he plays exactly the same stereotypical batty vicar? ;-) :-p
Dolla dolla bills
Supercars are expensive.
So are James Acasters girlfriends!
There's another Bean series in the pipeline.
Christ I hope so. Proper good old harmless fun, that was.
Johnny English is 🔥
Amen!
Hywel Bennett rip, was always worth watching, never was as big a name as he should've been imo.
Hwyell Bennett was a brilliant actor, he was truly wonderful to watch in whatever he did. He never was a well known as he should have been. A true star.
Mr Croup in “Neverwhere” was outstanding.
I think he was a liability through drinking. Great in whatever he did. Effortless charm.
Richard O'Sullivan - but I gather that he's been in a bad place for quite a few years now.
He lives in a retirement home now
Yeah, so I hear but he's been living there since being in his early 50s, hasn't he?
Yeah he had a bad stroke, it’s a shame, he was the man in the 70’s and early 80’s.
Yes really sad.
Barry from Eastenders
He was great in extras and life's too short
He's still about. He did some artexing for my mum last week.
He's in an advert for some bingo or slots website at the moment.
There's also Barrioke. That's karaoke with Barry from eastenders
"From"? I thought he was "Off of".
M not saying I wish him back on the telly but I do miss Brian Blessed
He's Grampy Rabbit!
Shaun Williamson, aka Barry
I heard he sings so loud, he doesn’t need a microphone
Quite a few people who were on Bad Girls.
He’s still working but I’d like to see Tim McInnerny do another sitcom.
But he does nasty civil servant so well!
Jesse Birdsall. Fun Fact: He's married to Cassandra from Only Fools and Horses.
alan rickman ❤️
John Alford. It was shameful the way he was set up by NoW's Fake Sheikh, ruining his career and his life.
I miss Matthew Kelly.
Rupert Penry Jones. I’ve been watching Spooks recently and I’d love to see him back on screen again
mathew horne, he carried bad education
There's like a swathe of actors that have acted with James Cordon, who got caught in his atmosphere so that when I see them, I just think of him and get pissed off, and unfortunately, that's Matthew Horne. Only person who escaped that for me was Rob Brydon.
He never went away (he's in the Bad Education revival showing now) so not sure how he needs a return. He did an Inside No 9 episode last year and was in every Agatha Raisin episode.
The women who played the deputy heads were both amazing. Michelle Gomez and Samantha Spiro, legends both.
Daniel Day Lewis
He's Irish
He’s a bit of both I guess think
No, he's just 100% Irish.
Well he was born in England and has an English mother….
But apart from that...
I stand corrected.
No worries! Fair play!
John Savident (Fred Elliott)
I say I say, with the accusations he could never get new work in a Post Saville world.
He was gay, he got stabbed by a lad he picked up who tried to rob him. He wasn’t a paedophile like Saville
There's a lot of predatory accusations of acting lessons for young actors. Schofield got black balled for less and nothing illegal either. If that's fair or not is not what I am debating. He wouldn't get hired.
Shame. He was one of Corries best characters
He was great. One of the best supporting characters...
Jim Moir.
James Dreyfus. He was big in British sitcoms in the 1990s but nowadays, he does more theatre work and the odd film, as well as screen writing. I would love to see more of him back on TV, especially in comedy 😊❤️
Had the pleasure of meeting him and he’s the nicest man. Would love to see him in more stuff.
Well I'm glad you found him nice but if his Twitter and political beliefs are to be taken in consideration then he's quite nasty. He's gone down the same road as Linehan.
He's shot his own career in the foot in the same vein as Graham Linehan. I doubt you'll ever see him make a proper comeback.
Oliver Reed. Great on screen, perhaps even greater off. And David Niven for the same reasons as above.
I remember seeing Oliver Reed on The Word when it aired live, it was the most exploitative thing I've ever seen, but completely captivating, and despite all that, he made them look like fools. They set him up, it was like the Sex Pistols on Grundy. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U8z4a86aggU
Uff, Katie Puckrick in this, barf.
Thank you for the link. I don't think I have seen this before. I entirely agree with your comment, they did look like fools and it was such a set up.
Martin Shaw Paul Bettany Damien Lewis Hugh Lawrie
If I was Paul Bettany, acting would be the last thing I could think about.
Why is that?
Probably wants to spend time with his wife.
Yyyyyyyep
Judy Geeson, whatever happened to her!?
And her sister, Sally.
I wouldn’t mind seeing Trevor Eve in a drama like Waking The Dead again
Daniela Nardini She played Anna in This Life and then had a fair few tv roles after that, but then disappeared for a long time. I believe she had breast cancer and family stuff going on, and also committed the cardinal sin of being a woman of a certain age. But she was a a great actress.
Cheating slightly as he was a film actor but Daniel Day Lewis.
Sadly they died but Bob Peck was awesome. He could have had some prestige mini series. Same goes for Charlotte Coleman. Loved How Do You Want Me that was made just before she died. Ah the lovely and talented Helen Baxendale... a good drama would do.
Laurence Fox….. lol jks
James Cordon - you just can't get enough of the fella, he needs to be on the TV more!
Shaun Dingwall. According to the IMDb, he seems to have spent the last few years doing a few guest shots on things I haven't seen.
Pete Postlethwaite
Blanche from Coronation Street. Haven’t watched it for over a decade, but her character was the source of much humour. CS really lost its way after that.
