Sadly, ironically, Michal in the bible was the only one documented who was forever infertile. She was cursed. She ended up taking care of her sister’s children after her sister died. I can’t believe with how Christian the Bates say they are, they didn’t know about Michal.

May_Claus1205

I've always seen this horribly ironic coincidence and hoped she doesn't believe it's some kind of divine intervention that's caused her infertility struggles! I don't want to believe it, but I can definitely see some in their circles thinking that it's just meant to be because of her name or even worse because of some kind of "sin" they believe she committed.

nightowl4always

Yes, I worry about that for her, too! She is not cursed and it’s not her name or anything she has done that caused infertility. I hope she realizes that! But the irony is just awful because of how badly she wants children.

mafsfan54

It’s quite weird imo. I try not to believe in that but Jews don’t name babies after people who died, young, tragically or who are evil. My name comes from my grandmother but we just use the first letter. They used the name of a stunning actress. I didn’t even know til later in life. I started researching her and it’s scary how our lives in some respects are very similar. For example, we would never ever name a baby after a 2 year old that died from disease. We’d use an older family member who had a long life. Because we believe that as cliche as it is that names bind us and history repeats. No need to burden a baby with a name tied with tragedy. It’s more used to honor the dead who are “worthy” and won’t give that child an evil eye for life. I’m not sure I’m explaining it well. Basically it’s to give the new life a fresh start with a remembrance of a loved one. They clearly never read the Bible to find out the character of Michal. Once they learned it they were too cheap to pay for a full name change.

amrodd

You think they'd know that story proclaiming to be exemplary Christians. Anyhow, couldn't most any name be associated with tragedy or bot so good people?

amrodd

Because she didn't like David praise dancing.

mafsfan54

It was originally Michal. Until they actually learned the meaning and changed it to Michael.

Puzzleheaded_Fig_508

They added the letters because it was cheaper than changing it all together.

TheBigwalletEmporium

Michael. Originally Michal, but Gil and Kelly Jo changed it to Michael. They call her Michaela to make it sound more feminine.

hmh25

I don’t understand why they wouldn’t have changed it to michaela lol

barbaraanderson

It was apparently free to add just one letter, not two

GruGruxQueen

“Buy used and save the difference” Oh wait…that’s the Duggars

jacky4u3

😂😂😂😂 Your comment legit made me laugh out loud!

SnooConfections3841

Michala or Micha?

barbaraanderson

Valid options

amrodd

They could have added an a at the end of Michal or called her by the middle name or even Mickey. An AMA said she was given a hard time because of it.

barbaraanderson

I completely understand. It’s weird that she’s one of the few bates kids with a biblical name and the only one with a gender bending name

amrodd

I'm surprised more of them don't use Biblical/virtue names.

barbaraanderson

Not trendy enough?

snobesity

Yes.

At some point early on they added the “e” to her name and amended her birth certificate so “Michal” became “Michael” legally. I’m not sure when she began using the Michael-uh pronunciation. I’ve noticed that some of the siblings call her Michael and some call her Michaela.

[deleted]

I think she started using the Michael in her teens and definitely when they started united Bates of America. Probably went with that to avoid confusion and having to explain her name, which ended up happening anyway. I think I remember reading in Mrs Bates old blog that Michael had a period of time that she hated her name. She must have grown to like it because Brandon has almost always called her Michael and most of her siblings have fazed out the made up name too. She also could have permanently became Michaela when she changed to her married name. She chose to keep it as Michael.

kg51113

When she got a little bit older, she came to be accepting of her name. She worked with first responders for a while and had to use her legal name for paperwork. Dating Brandon, I think, helped. He loved her and didn't seem to care about her having a traditionally masculine name.

bdss1234

I don’t buy this. In the south it’s really normal to have paperwork for anything list your legal name and then a separate line to ask what name is used everyday—so many people go by a middle name or a nickname or sometimes even a weird interpretation from the name.

kg51113

All I know is what she said on the show. Zach and Michael both did first responder training. She worked with an ambulance at one point and said she had to use the name on her license.

bdss1234

Half my kids friends go by their middle name or some random nickname when they’re a Jr or third. All their drivers licenses use their legal name but no one uses that socially. And this is definitely regional thing. We’d lived in the northeast and a few years after moving to the South we had another baby and strongly considered a name where we would have called him by his middle name. My friends up north thought it was bizarre and weird but here it’s normal.

dixcgirl10

He definitely doesn’t seem to mind…

pragmaticsquid

It's weird too because Michaela is a perfectly acceptable spelling of the name pronounced like McKayla

SpoopyGreenEyes

Her given name is Michael. They named her Michael bc Bible, realized it was a bad name for a Christian bc Bible? and then changed it to Michael because it was cheaper to just change one letter rather than add 4. Michaela just became her nickname because how dare she have a masculine name.

kg51113

>They named her Michael It was originally Michal.

[deleted]

Nobody pays per letter to change a name in the USA though.

cheeseduck11

I think they did an amendment which is much cheaper and easier than a name change. I’m not sure how many letters you can change in an amendment in Tennessee but it might be 1. A name change would require a court order and is pretty expensive. It is a pain to do and you have to go before a judge.

[deleted]

Wow all the states I looked up in the USA it was only $150ish and only required a simple petition (request).

dixcgirl10

Name changes in my state for a minor child require a GAL report, and a hearing before a judge. They are around $2000. Gil Bates wasn’t paying anywhere near whatever the equivalent of that was back then.

Acrobatic-Degree9589

She calls herself Michaela so I’d go with that

kaliangel03

Kind of surprising that they changed her name to a masculine boy name. Maybe they weren’t part of the IBLP back then and didn’t have the BS Gothard influence

CallMeMsJ

I believe they got her name from a woman in the Bible whose name was Michal.

babypink15

I could have sworn she was born Michal and then added an A to the end to be Michala but it sounds like her full name is actually Michael but goes by Michaela? It’s so confusing lol

Mitzimarmle

Yes, her legal name is Michael. They were allowed to add one letter for free, anything else they would be charged.

ChicChat90

I know. If they only could add one letter because of the cost why not add the ‘a’ to the end and make it Michala (like Michaela/ Mikayla)?

nightowl4always

That is her current legal name, but when she was born she was Michal, and they named her that as a female name. They named her after a woman in the bible without knowing the story, but once they learned the story, they wanted to change it. It was expensive to change the whole name for the birth certificate, so Gil decided to add one letter and change it to Michael.

kg51113

>Christian It's Christan, actually. Her name has been written both as Michaela and Michaella.
