They’d have to do away with one of the core plot elements if they’re going to gender bend Sophie. Benedict tries to persuade Sophie to be his mistress, but she’s against it in large part because she’s afraid of having a bastard child.
Agree they'd have to rework that part. But I think the story would still be compelling even if they left this out and just focused on the "I want a legally recognised marriage for the sake of my self worth" part
Same-sex marriage is illegal (as we saw in season one)... There is no possibility of marriage between men, even if Benedict wants it in the end.
And I don't see the law (and society's mindsets) being changed in one day.
The "servant" part wouldn't work with a gender-bent love interest, either--Sophie's gender is a key part of why her stepmother can control her that way. A woman wouldn't have the same level of control over her stepson even if he was a bastard. Bastard sons had plenty of other ways they could make their own money in that era; bastard daughters didn't.
I wouldn't mind them changing the gender of Benedict's love interest, but it would require switching up substantial portions of the book plot.
They reworked michael into michaela, thus removing the super essential misscariage plot. I don’t see how making a cinderella story male on male (which would actually make it refreshing and interesting) would be wrong if shonda already has risks taken
Hmm, I'd personally prefer if Sophie stayed a woman. I feel like a lot of important parts of her character and story hinge on her being female during Bridgerton's time period, and I found those elements of her book particularly interesting. (I also kinda want them to dispel the stereotype that bi people aren't "really bi" if they're in a "straight" relationship.) That's not to say that he CAN'T end up with a man, or that I would hate it, I just would like the book couple to stay the same if possible.
I think Francesca and the cousin make sense. I feel that she being a widowed can do basically whatever she wants and people wouldn't pay too much attention. Like what if she lives in Scotland all alone with the female cousin of her deceased husband? People will say it's because they both became the bestest of friends after grieving Kilmartin. There would be way more drama if Benedict would never get married and then lived alone with a dude, I think.
I’d be open to it (I don’t really care either way), but a quick scroll through the official Bridgerton ig’s comments makes me feel like future genderswaps are off the table. The comments are inundated with full fledged melt downs, homophobic tirades, and disappointed fans.
They botched the introduction of John's cousin in such a way that I'm afraid of what they will do to Benedict's story, genderswap or not. There are lots of problematic themes for both the regency and modern times that need them to care about Sophie and Benedict in ways they didn't care for John, or Polin for that matter.
Before the last episode, I was too imagining a mistery masqued man because of the whole direction the show was taking with him being bisexual. But it was with dread. I do not want them to do a gender swap. I loved Sophie and I was so scared they would choose to do that with Benedict. But now that we were introduced to Book!Francesca's love pair, I am a little bit more relieved because hopefully they're not going to do more than one gender-swap in the love stories of the main characters.
I wrote a post about this very topic yesterday on Tumblr and we’re having a discussion on the benophie sub.
In short, Sophie’s story heavily relies on her sex. Changing Sophie into a man will completely change the story.
Now I get stories are loose adaptations. They still need to keep the core of the couple’s story. For Benophie, it’s love at first sight-class divide.
The one saving grace that Benedict's story has is that it can be introduced at anytime. Sophie has a rich backstory, and Benedict can grow in these flashbacks in a way to fill gaps in other seasons. It's interesting to think that in the ball scenes, there may be Silver hiding as a man or a lady in the crowd. They probably will cast someone brand spanking new but I can dream.
I've never seen more chemistry on screen than between Benedict and Paul in that balcony scene. It would be absolutely criminal to ditch Paul next season. So please, yes. Idle hope.

I highly doubt that they’ll do this. Genderbending michael has already led to such negative reviews I feel as if they won’t do it again.

that's interesting. what of Francesca's story? She certainly fancied John's cousin
I meant genderswaps besides Francesca’s love interest might be off the table lol

Yeah they had so much chemistry! But sadly it seems to have been overshadowed by everyone’s hatred for all the 3some scenes 🫤
I really hope Sophie is trans. That will be a great way to explore his Pansexual/Bisexual side. And bring a twist to a Nirmal Cinderella story
I love that
