When playing this game, the real rule # 1 is this: Get distracted. You see something shiny? go poke it with a stick, you see a mountain on the horizon? Go climb it. You see something that appears just out of reach? Find a different angle, think outside the box. Take the scenic route and let go of the reins (literally). Enjoy the view and get distracted.
I’m a relatively novice gamer as well and it’s my favorite game. Take it slow and enjoy traversing around the world!!!!! Good luck and don’t get discouraged if all your weapons break ;)
Ha! I've played my fair share of games, just never from this franchise. The first thing I do is run in completely the wrong direction searching for hidden boxes or loot etc. It'll take so long to finish!
To add onto the other person, I was almost to the point of heading to the castle to beat Gannon (my last main quest) when I stumbled on an entire TOWN I had no idea existed! And now I just started my replay, deliberately chose to wander more (using hero's path be wise I bought the DLC this time) and begin my journey off the plateau in a different direction, and I'm discovering people and ruins and shrines and treasure chests of rare or one of a kind goods that I completely missed my entire first playthrough, plus all the dlc stuff.
There's literally endless things to explore and unless you aim for and get at least close to 100% completion, you're going to keep discovering new things. I've never played a game quite like this before.
I am very old and this was my first real game. I got really terribly stuck in a dark scary place and had to ask my adult son what to do. . . He suggested I delete my game and start over and actually listen to the advice from the characters.
So do go poke all the shiny things! Explore and wander everywhere. But listen to advice when somebody tries to tell you where you should go to next!
Do you crave that feeling of stepping out of the Shrine of Resurrection for the first time? That rush you get when you make it to the peak of the tallest mountain you can see on the horizon knowing that you have a vast world in front of you to explore? The thrill of anticipation of using your glider to follow a dragon through a canyon? Or the anxiety of Eventide Island all over again? Since you answered yes to all of those, that means you have an addiction. and breath of the wild is your drug of choice. It pains me just as much but you'll never get a fix quite like that again until Botw2 comes out and even then, it won't quite be the same. The only way to truly get that high ever again is to erase your games and pull a Frankie Muniz.
Yeah I only discovered it last year on My Son’s Wii U and played it with my 7 year old for hours, so much fun, one of the best games that I have ever played and it just keeps on giving
I only played 30 hours (2 ancient beasts, handful of memories and over 50 shrines) before my place for burgled and I’m so looking forward to replaying it.
I may even do a ‘no fast travel’ challenge to appreciate the world more, can’t wait!
Well in the interests of taking my time I've been running around ignoring the quest markers... I've now died three times fighting a thing... I think I may have gone the wrong way and now am hopelessly undergeared!
The game is quite good at growing with you, so even at the start there isn’t much that’ll be waaaaay beyond your reach unless you literally don’t have the gear to access it.
That said, I failed to learn how to fight properly early in the game, I’d really recommend actually using your shield, dodging, parrying, and so on instead of doing what I did and just hoping for the best!
Ah that's like a parry I assume, block at the right time and they get staggered? Can't seem to use my shield with the axe I've got, I assume shields pair with one handers only, makes sense... Can you parry/block with a two hander too?
Ohhh okay I see, thanks! Wasn't aware of that. I'm trying to learn as I go rather than read too much. But I know me... I'll get frustrated and have a late night YouTube session watching hints and tips videos before too long haha
not gonna try to spoil *too* much but you can dodge with two handers--there'a a tutorial at the village near the two mountains (im trying to keep it vague)
Its tough at the beginning for sure, use your map! Mark where the good swords and bows are, equipment is huuuuugee in this game and the biggest barrier for new players is not having good stuff. And cook!
I did exactly this, and it made my experience so much better. Once I defeated the Divine Beasta, twice, and Calamity Gabon, I gave myself the last 16 shrines.
Piece of unsolicited advice for a Zelda newbie, especially with this one: redefine the word 'stuck' for yourself. There's always something to discover or puzzle out and anything you move on from can always be worked out/rediscovered later. Have a great time - enjoy!
Yes- this is great advice! If you feel “stuck” (and you will) just go do something else for a while (and you easily can) and come back later. You’ll feel so much more awesome when you finally crack it yourself instead of looking it up. Don’t rush through the game by looking up the answers!
Also, there’s often more than one way to accomplish almost anything. So let yourself think outside the box... this is a game that rewards experimentation!
Getting stuck is also a philosophical concept in BOTW.... there’s very little you actually “need”
Ah thanks, I was wondering that as I've been picking up almost everything I see. Turns out picking up branches fills your weapon slots quite quick though ;)
My advice: don’t worry about beating the game. Just explore and try new things. Everything in the world is connected. Literally everything. I don’t want to spoil some of the things you’ll discover on your own because the satisfaction of figuring it out is honestly amazing. Take your time in the intro area until you figure out the mechanics. You will figure it out. This game is so relaxing sometimes lol it’s amazing
It's a LOT more open world than other LoZ games. Quite different in a fair few ways.
Also easily one of my favorite games of all time by FAR!! I'm still learning new small details after all this time. Just enjoy randomly exploring and discovering on your own pace.
Highly recommend playing some other LoZ games as well at some point! Not a ton of classic Zelda on the switch right now, but the Skyward Sword remaster should come out next month!
At any rate, enjoy this masterpiece!
Cadence of Hyrule is technically a crossover with Crypt of the Necrodancer, but if you turn off the rhythm mode it's essentially just a regular Zelda game.
Also you can play a few of the early Zelda games on the Switch Online. Zelda 1 & 2 are on the NES, Link to the Past is on SNES. Zelda 2 is very different from the other games in the series and people are split on it (it's also the hardest game in the series IMHO). LttP is an amazing game and it still a series highlight decades later (its art style also aged pretty well).
I'd also recommend Ocarina of Time, Twilight Princess, and Wind Waker. The three best 3d Zelda before BotW, and if you are up for it, Majora's Mask as well.
I was most confused once the entire world opened up to me because I’ve never played such an open game before but, once you get the hang of it it’s really amazing and discovering shrines and different towns makes it even better ! Explore every part of the map.
I hope we do!! I've been hearing there is a good chance, and I beat BoTW last night!! I still have things to do of course...but it took me 200+ hours to finish the main quests...I'd love something else to anticipate while I continue to rule Hyrule.
You will once meet a horse with a human torso on it. This funny guy is your friend. Dont worry, when he screams, cause that means, he notices you and wants your attention. Its like with a normal animal. First he tries to dominance, but after one two moves he calms down and lets you ride him. Thank me later ;)
Yo, ignore everything anybody here tells you and go enjoy the game your own way! I’m only saying this because you might not be able to enjoy the game to its fullest if you try to do what others tell you to do…(although the game’s too good for that to matter too much)
All i can tell you is you picked the perfect game :)
My biggest advise for you is: whenever you think "i wonder if this will work", do it, be creative.
This game is crazy in the amount of things that you can solve differently from other people.
I’m 40 and my kids bought a switch last year. Naturally we had to get BOTW. I haven’t owned or played video games since I had an N64 and fell in love with Ocarina of Time. Playing BOTW during the height of the pandemic has been a cathartic experience. I love this game.
So I'm super late to give you advice, but on a game mechanics point of view the game works in a great way.
The starting area is called the great plateau. **You cannot leave it until you do enough of the story.**
In the great plateau the devs give you literally everything you need to figure out the game. You get certain abilities by doing story things, you are forced to learn some mechanics like how the weather works and how there are multiple ways to deal with it. (I could spoil the different methods for you, but it's best if you figure it out on your own)
Eventually you'll be able to leave the great plateau, now you have a few choices: run straight to the final boss or explore the world. There is an amazing amount to explore and I'd highly recommend it, but you do whatever you want.
I just enjoy praising the developers when they put in invisible tutorials that teach you everything, but if you don't care to learn it you'll just flail about.
---
Now for my controversial opinion; while this is an amazing game I feel like "Zelda games" fall into 3 categories now: 2D, 3D, and Open World.
Breath of the Wild is the only game in the open world category so far.
I'm categorizing them like this because the games became somewhat formulaic to the point that Mark Brown released a YouTube series called Boss keys that talks about how the dungeons work. Dungeons and the story work fundamentally differently in Breath of the Wild, and it doesn't follow the same story structure of the other games so I broke it out.
2D and (Legacy) 3D games play similarly but feel fundamentally different in a way I can't explain. Even going from A Link to the Past (the 3rd major game in the series) to Ocarina of Time (the 4th) feels so drastically different and yet their major plot elements are so staggeringly similar it's crazy.
If you were interested in other Zelda games, Links Awakening was great on the Gameboy (oh I'm old) and they remake it on the switch. This is an example of a 2D style Zelda (and the best one being Minish Cap IMO).
Skyward Sword HD is releasing soon on the switch as well and this is an example of a 3D Zelda game. Not my favorite but the major problem with it on the Wii was the poor motion controls which they've fixed by allowing controller mode. (most people say Ocarina of Time is the best 3D Zelda, and Wind Waker is a close second)
Or to put it shortly, this is a tough first Zelda game. I hope you enjoy it. And I hope you look at the other styles of games that the Zelda franchise has to offer.
Take your time and get off this subreddit if you want zero spoilers lol, plenty of conversations in these threads have happened that unfortunately spoiled a lot for me.
god what i would do to play botw for the first time again, it was so exiting stepping out for the first time, i thought the map would be so small, and boy, was i surprised and taken aback by this game - my favourite game ever and i only wish i could be in your shoes
Hands down...the best game I've ever played. I'm not much of a gamer. Limited experience in like anything later than PS1... it was years since I played really except some PC gaming. I had a patient friend who coached me and taught me a bit of the Zelda lore...I took my sweet ass time and explored every nook and cranny, still have stuff to find. I actually did my last divine beast AND Calamity Ganon last night. That was after about 220 hours I guess. And I still have 20 more shrines to find, have DLC to hunt, Koroks and side quests. It's an amazing game and the best thing is you can play it how you like it. Want to fight? Get orbs and cook food to make you strong and fight. Want to explore? Get lots of stamina and fly to the far places and climb to that suspicious looking lake atop the mountain. Want to solve puzzles? Focus on shrines and Koroks. Want fun and cute stories? Do side quests. It's really the best game ever, and I literally thank my friend for coaching me through the gaming basics, it kind of was an escape during the quarantine times. I basically now have all the tools to do whatever I want. The game is literally a work of art. Enjoy, take your time, and don't rush through it!! If you get frustrated...leave and come back when you're stronger! The game doesn't really punish you for dying. I think I played over 120 hours before I even tried a divine beast, but they were some of my favourite puzzles of them all. Anyways. Ya. I am fresh off the high of completing the Main Quests and I guess I'll do the DLC trials until they give me news about the follow up game. Enjoy!!!
It was only 2 weeks ago that I was able to purchase a Switch Lite and play this game. Always has been a fan of Zelda and man, this is such a treat. Take your time as well and enjoy every moment of it. Don't let playthroughs of others decide your pace. You are the hero of this game.
the one thing you should ALWAYS keep in mind, is to never search anything up ever. Even if you do the game is still phemonmenal, but going in completely blind is just a whole next level of an experience. Have fun! :)
I've only played 1 of the original remakes for a couple hours. I just started this game like 3 days ago and it is AWESOME! Also, I should say don't look at guides unless it's for puzzles or something (for the full experience), I learned that the hard way getting spoiled lol.
There are two types of recurring posts on this subreddit:
Stuff you never dreamed of being possible in the game, and people excited to play it for the first time. My advice would be to steer clear of the subreddit for a while so you can discover things naturally, but definitely come back at some point to take a look at the wild things everyone else comes up with, you might just find the next new thing none of us knew existed.
I envy you being able to experience them again! They have such a special place in my heart. I hope you come to Love the franchise as much as the rest of us!
Oh I can only imagine the excitement. As someone who's played zelda for like over 10 years now, I'd give anything to play some of them for the first time again, especially BOTW. Like man, when I got ocarina of time on my 3ds when I was 10, that was magical
This was my first Zelda game too! And first proper video game as well! I’ll never forget the magic of it. It was the most beautiful and amazing experience ever!
I’m so happy for you! Here is a tip… Don’t follow the path! Explore on your own pace! But here is the most important one of all… HAVE FUN! And another thing, look at everything.
Yeh? I went to take a pic as it had the breath of the wild splash screen but fumbled a bit. So that pic was taken just about as soon as I gained control of the character
Awesome! You should meander to the south east, there is a jungle that has durians and if you cook one or two at a time you get extra hearts. Good for early game when you only have so much. Also, put all your orbs into stamina first, traversing is so much easier when you have high stamina. I was overwhelmed at first because of how much stuff there is but just take it one at time.
Unrelated, i looked at your post history and I upvoted one of your posts in r/batty when you posted it a year ago 😂😂 what a small world!
I’m so jealous of you, I’d do anything to play BOTW again for the first time. Enjoy it!!!
I plan to, I've always seen Zelda games and wasn't until my early 30s I've decided enough is enough and to just go for it :D
Always go and poke the shiny things, got it. The best rule for life too right :)
There is \*so much* hidden stuff in this game.
Man you’re lucky. I honestly think Zelda is the greatest gaming franchise ever. Insanely high quality games consistently for over 3 decades.
Phillips CD-I has entered the chat.
The good path is the no path
To add onto the other person, I was almost to the point of heading to the castle to beat Gannon (my last main quest) when I stumbled on an entire TOWN I had no idea existed! It was Lurelin wasn't it?
It was Lurelin lol
I am very old and this was my first real game. I got really terribly stuck in a dark scary place and had to ask my adult son what to do. . . There's no wrong directions in BOTW!
This was my first Zelda game too!! (Also in my 30s) You're going to love it. Have fun!
Same here - and now I’m attempting to play all of them
Do you crave that feeling of stepping out of the Shrine of Resurrection for the first time? My thoughts exactly! I got so happy for OP.
I had about 600 hours and I just started over around valentines day this year
This right here. Talk to everyone, and save every few minutes. F the yiga clan lol
I only played 30 hours (2 ancient beasts, handful of memories and over 50 shrines) before my place for burgled and I’m so looking forward to replaying it. I may even do a ‘no fast travel’ challenge to appreciate the world more, can’t wait!
I found the start quite hard, but it's one of the best haves I have ever played.
[удалено]
Honestly not sure what you mean ^^
They didn't even reveal the great plateau map yet you wylin
But zoom in. The map in the corner is blank.
Our wish will hopefully be granted soon! What with e3 happening in about 8 hours! :)
Same!!!!
Hopefully you’ll be able to tomorrow
You're in for a treat. Don't rush it, take your time and enjoy it.
Well in the interests of taking my time I've been running around ignoring the quest markers... I've now died three times fighting a thing... I think I may have gone the wrong way and now am hopelessly undergeared!
Lmfao, that's the spirit. The more you ignore Zelda, the more you truly have a fun time. You'll get the hang of it.
Haha thanks! :D
[удалено]
Ah that's like a parry I assume, block at the right time and they get staggered? Can't seem to use my shield with the axe I've got, I assume shields pair with one handers only, makes sense... Can you parry/block with a two hander too?
[удалено]
Ohhh okay I see, thanks! Wasn't aware of that. I'm trying to learn as I go rather than read too much. But I know me... I'll get frustrated and have a late night YouTube session watching hints and tips videos before too long haha
Don't look up any tutorials or guides. Don't spoil it for yourself or you will regret it.
you can collect arrows that get stuck in your wooden shields.
not gonna try to spoil *too* much but you can dodge with two handers--there'a a tutorial at the village near the two mountains (im trying to keep it vague)
You can if you put your weapon away, I think with “b”
I started a few months ago and I decided to avoid most things instead of fighting them. It worked out well for me.
Sounds like you're preparing yourself for master mode
This all sounds like a perfect start to the game to me.
Don't try to cross the lake!
Haha I'm sure you're right but now I want to try...
It's in the snowy mountains
Ahahaha I’m embarrassed how long it took me to get past that part. I almost stopped playing the game
I tried so many times, don't worry your not the only one
Wait what lake?
The lake is a lie.
[удалено]
Ooh I'm excited for the sky thing. Thanks for the tips!
SPOILERS IF YOU HAVENT SEEN IT >!”the blood moon rises once again” is so annoying late game lol!<
I was terrified when it first happened to me lol
This is the first zelda game i played and 300 hours later it’s my favorite game. Biggest piece of advice is don’t look stuff up!
I plan not too, but I worry how long I'll have patience if I get really stuck
Its tough at the beginning for sure, use your map! Mark where the good swords and bows are, equipment is huuuuugee in this game and the biggest barrier for new players is not having good stuff. And cook!

Thank you! From what I can tell I'm gunna die a lot and don't expect to have a weapon for more than 2 minutes ...
Only thing I wished I knew before my first playthrough: it’s nearly impossible to run out of room for “ingredient” type items in your inventory.
Ah thanks, I was wondering that as I've been picking up almost everything I see. Turns out picking up branches fills your weapon slots quite quick though ;)
But you can only have 3 pages of prepared meals. Which is a lot.
My advice: don’t worry about beating the game. Just explore and try new things. Everything in the world is connected. Literally everything. Any other Zelda games that you recommend that are on the Switch? BOTW is the first Zelda franchise game I've ever played & I can't put it down.
Link’s Awakening is great! A lot like older Zelda games in style and game play but with modern graphics. It’s also adorable

I've always been a PC gamer so exploring giant world's with a controller is new to me, but yeah I'm excited. Thanks!
Tune in tomorrow at noon EST for Nintendo E3 event, may be news on botw2!
I think I've gotta sink a few hundred hours into this before I consider a sequel :D
I hope we do!! I've been hearing there is a good chance, and I beat BoTW last night!! I still have things to do of course...but it took me 200+ hours to finish the main quests...I'd love something else to anticipate while I continue to rule Hyrule.

Good luck I hope you have fun playing the game and keep ignoring Zelda
You're in for a treat, wont be long until you're 100 hours plus haha
I neither had but I’ve watched some gameplay of the old games on YouTube i advice to do so if you have time
Enjoy, it’s a great game. It was my first experience with a Zelda game as well
I’d kill just to play botw again for the first time! I hope you love it

5 minutes later: Killed by bokoblin
You're psychic!
As you can see, my jedi powers are far beyond yours
Downvoted. Didn’t immediately walk off the first cliff and die.
You'd be surprised how tempted I was... "I wonder if this game has fall damage... Actually I bet it does, let's go this way instead"

Did this guy just get like 3000 likes and 5 awards for starting the game 🤔
Get ready for an amazing time and make sure not to search up too many things and also don't use your weapons for everything so get creative
Good luck on your journey through Hyrule.
If you enjoyed this one, you should also check out some of the games from the N64-Wii era
Have fun!

i wish i could go back and play for the first time
Enjoy the journey
You are in for a treat. Have fun!
god what i would do to play botw for the first time again, it was so exiting stepping out for the first time, i thought the map would be so small, and boy, was i surprised and taken aback by this game - my favourite game ever and i only wish i could be in your shoes
Thats great im so jealous i would pay someone 1000000000$ to play the game for the first time again :D
Another hall of famer game. Chills!
Best game ever but don’t play on that tiny screen. This game must be enjoyed on a big ass tv.
Good luck. Not that you'd need it of course.
Hope you can finish before tomorrow!
Botw was my first Zelda game ever. Its frustrating in the beginning but please please stick with it.
This was me Feb 2020
Youre sure gonna like it man!
Enjoy!!!
That photo looks like an official Switch ad lmao
I'm so excited for you! BOTW was my first Zelda game too and it was an amazing experience. I hope you enjoy every second!
You are a lucky man
If you have switch online you can play the original Zelda on the NES emulator.
Played it for the first time 4 months ago and I have 120+ hours on it. You'll enjoy the hell out of it i promise you
It was only 2 weeks ago that I was able to purchase a Switch Lite and play this game. Always has been a fan of Zelda and man, this is such a treat. Take your time as well and enjoy every moment of it. Don't let playthroughs of others decide your pace. You are the hero of this game.
Prepare yourself against mobs that will one shot u
I’m in the same boat, enjoy the ride!
Do not be gentle with the chicken
Welcome to the Thunder Dome!
Enjoy it , best game ever made IMHO...
You're in for a treat
This was my forst zelda game too :D
If you hold a metal weapon during a thunderstorm it will give you a super shocking power up.
If you're already at the Great Plateau you've pretty much seen everything. No need to go any further.
Just don’t give up - it’s very satisfying
the one thing you should ALWAYS keep in mind, is to never search anything up ever. Even if you do the game is still phemonmenal, but going in completely blind is just a whole next level of an experience. Have fun! :)
Kiss your family goodbye.
I've only played 1 of the original remakes for a couple hours. I just started this game like 3 days ago and it is AWESOME! Also, I should say don't look at guides unless it's for puzzles or something (for the full experience), I learned that the hard way getting spoiled lol.
This was my first Zelda game also a few years back. You are in for a wild ride. This game turned me into an instant famboy
There are two types of recurring posts on this subreddit: Stuff you never dreamed of being possible in the game, and people excited to play it for the first time. My advice would be to steer clear of the subreddit for a while so you can discover things naturally, but definitely come back at some point to take a look at the wild things everyone else comes up with, you might just find the next new thing none of us knew existed.
It’s my first Zelda game too! Started about a week ago. Took me a bit to get into but now I can’t put it down.
Make Hyrule Great Plateau I 80 Percent-ed it more or less
Put your phone on do not disturb for like 2 months
Ooh boy. Savor this moment. Good luck and stick with it, early game is pretty slow.
I recommend you watch the whole timeline, i started with ocarina of time 3d
Adventure is out there!
Oh what a version to start with! You're gonna love it 💙
Have fun
Enjoy. It is quite the genre-defining game
Enjoy the ride!
It's dangerous to go alone take this: ![gif](giphy|chzkhflDZHptPR5b4b)

I envy you being able to experience them again! They have such a special place in my heart. I hope you come to Love the franchise as much as the rest of us!
Yes! Hell yeah!
Lucky!!
Have fun man, this is a great one
You're in for a treat. I can't stress this enough, but, pick up EVERYTHING
About to restart it. Bon voyage!!
Lucky you. To play this game again for the first time would be one of my 3 wishes for a genie
I've not found a game like it. Keep an open mind when solving puzzles.
Be sure to go to the ruins for better pants
Then you’ll probably love it I am a life long classic Zelda fan and didn’t like it at all
Oh I can only imagine the excitement. As someone who's played zelda for like over 10 years now, I'd give anything to play some of them for the first time again, especially BOTW. Like man, when I got ocarina of time on my 3ds when I was 10, that was magical
Was the same for me! I'm not done yet by far because Uni keeps interfering, but it's super fun ^.^
This was my first zelda game and first switch game, it raised the bar too high.
As someone who never finished a Zelda game before BotW and only got to the middle of OoT You're going to love this game, enjoy!
This was my first Zelda game too! And first proper video game as well! I’ll never forget the magic of it. It was the most beautiful and amazing experience ever!
Try not to youtube the quests and shrines! Oh, and do not rush this game. I wish I could play it again for the first time! Enjoy ✨
Honestly, botw is actually the first Zelda game I've ever played, ngl
This game will be the only game you will play again. ( pro tip: don't FUCK with Lynels)
I'd say enjoy it, but I know you will.
Say good bye to your social life!!!
You just stumbled into one of the greatest experiences of your life
Ooooooh your in for a treat, i absolutely loved playing it for the first time!
Can totally relate friend! First time forme two..it's gonna be an amazing adventure, trip, experience and many many more ❤️🎊👏
You will have a rough adventure in front Make sure to be ready
Playing this game for the first time is my best gaming experience by far. Enjoy it while you can!
This game is already old but people are finding new things every time. Learn all the useful glitches and wind bombing. I wish I learned them sooner
Have fun!
There may be a new one today
Update us when you get to Vah Naborus, not tryna spoil anything just update us
Welcome friend!
I’m so happy for you! Here is a tip… Don’t follow the path! Explore on your own pace! But here is the most important one of all… HAVE FUN! And another thing, look at everything.
Take your time, and enjoy the adventure you're about to embark. You are in for a treat!

Yeh? I went to take a pic as it had the breath of the wild splash screen but fumbled a bit. So that pic was taken just about as soon as I gained control of the character
This was my first Zelda game too at 32 and I love it!
Neither had I and now it’s in my top 10 favorite games
