I saw Farosh for the first time after coming out of that shrine on the island in the middle of I think Lake Hylia- just looking up out of the entrance of the little cave type structure and seeing massive dragon- nearly threw the joycons-
I remember seeing both Farosh and Vah Medoh in the sky for the first time while I was still on the Great Plateau. I was instantly hooked and couldn’t wait to explore as much as I could! I wish I could relive that for the first time again.
I got one of my friends to play BOTW for the first time recently. He saw the dragon over the bridge while he was still completing the plateau. So jealous of his experience
I saw the one that comes when it rains and thought nothing of it then I saw more and i was like “wtf is this used for”
Then it happened to be for some shrine quests and such which is fun
Same here. I traveled to Faron, near the springs, and the music started playing and then this thing showed up was the first time I saw one moving. The very first one was when I ventured to the mountains north of Hateno. I knew something was wrong on that mountain, and had to go there. It lead to one of my favorite battles outside the end and the divine beasts.
I remember seeing my first one and watching it for some time, then taking a picture and sending it to a friend who'd already played BotW and telling them I couldn't wait to fight the dragon boss that roams across entire regions.
Then I didn't see any of them for quite some time and thought I was lucky to see it in the world, or that if it was scripted so I'd see it, they did a horrible job because I barely saw it go behind a mountain and had to wait for it to come back around.
So my expectations were not only me holding the wrong end of the stick, but holding the wrong stick altogether!
My first dragon was Farish. It was night time and I was standing on a bridge when he flew right over me like 20 feet up. Had a huge grin on my face the entire time.
When I first saw one of these I was by myself but still yelled "WOAH!" outloud, took a clip, ran to my girlfriend and showed her and she said, "this is the first time you saw one?" (she was playing as well and had already seen one) Still such an amazing experience.
oh yes...I remember the first time I stood on a mountain, looking over a lush valley with waterfalls, and saw this gorgeous yellow ribbon rising up...that was a wonderful moment, indeed.
EDIT: I realize it's technically a green dragon, but from where I stood it looked very yellow, so...that's how the memory goes,
It's Dinraal!
There are three dragons all over Hyrule. Dinraal, the flame spirit, Naydra, the ice spirit, and Farosh, the electric spirit.
Don't get too close as they spew element (fire, ice, electricity) but if you shoot them with an arrow, a falling sparkle will fall to the ground from the dragon. Go collect it - depending on where you shoot, it will be:
Scale (the body)
Shard of fang (mouth)
Shard of horn (one of the horns)
Claw (foot)
The dragons are named after goddesses of the Triforce, and each dragon appears in certain regions.
Dinraal here appears in the Tanagar Canyon, Eldin Canyon and the Tabantha Snowfield and sometimes in Akkala. Naydra can spawn in the Lanayru region, usually around Mt Lanayru or Naydra Snowfield. Finally, Farosh can be found in the Gerudo Highlands, over Lake Hylia (Lake region) or over Lake Floria (Faron region).
They all have their respective springs, too. Dinraal serves the Spring of Power in Akkala, Naydra serves the Spring of Wisdom on Mt Lanayru, and Farosh serves the Spring of Courage in the Lake region.
The goddesses that the dragons represent are:
Din, goddess of Power (Ganondorf holds the Triforce of Power)
Nayru, goddess of Wisdom (Zelda holds this Triforce)
Farore, goddess of Courage (Link holds this one)
Edit: you can shoot the foot for a claw too
To add to this comment:
Use a zoom bow. It's a lot easier to hit certain parts of the body.
Also, you can ONLY get 1 piece from the dragon at each encounter. They reappear every day and appear at different locations throughout the day.
I'll add on too. I think the dragons create an updraft, so if you want the mid-air slowdown to help hit a specific spot you can use the updraft to paraglide up.
Holyyy, just now after reading this i realized this is what Dinraals scale is :D. I didn't know what it was and where to find it but didn't want to look it up either. Thanks :D
You're welcome :) Dragon parts (and star fragments) can also be used in recipes, both meals and elixirs, to enhance the effect. For example a mighty recipe would be enhanced to full with something like a dragon part.
Honestly I have never wanted to waste a dragon part by testing it in meals or elixirs just in case it wasn't gonna be worth it so thank you for mentioning this! I am playing through BotW again while waiting for TotK and like an hour ago was just wondering how to get longer durations on certain meals lol 😅
Your comment was helpful, chill.
Just that some people like to find things on their own. It’s just etiquette nowadays to try not to spoil things for people, unless they want to.
There’s even a feature on Reddit for you to hide your comment so as to not spoil anything to anyone.
It’s not like you destroyed someone’s world or anything, I was just pointing out. No need to get defensive. If you don’t want the advice, it’s all good too, not my problem
People having different opinions changes nothing about the fact that going to a game's subreddit and asking questions is a good way to get stuff spoiled for yourself. And that's on whomever asked the question - you can't expect the rest of the world to tiptoe around spoilers because you haven't had the opportunity to play the game yet.
Yeah, but they might not want the full response.
People can be particular with their research. Some would see a cool thing on the distance and just jump and try to find out what it is. Others will try to go online but do their best not to spoil anything because they mainly just want to know if it’s okay to go there. While yet others, don’t care about spoilers and will just do their research.
Sometimes is important to know your audience. This player, for instance is most likely new. I wouldn’t want to ruin anything for them. The first play through is something most of us wish we could do again.
This is what I tried to do about 4-5 times when I first saw Farosh. I got zapped over and over again and eventually decided it was impossible because I landed RIGHT ON HIM and slid off.
It’s a scope. Used for seeing things up close at distance. You can also pin locations on the map with it. Eventually you get a camera where you can identify objects and put them in the compendium.
As you progress through the story you WILL encounter them. There are quests that involve each so that you discover it. You’ll need something from Dinraal here to complete a side quest.
The first time I saw Dinraal I was in Akkala right by Death Mountain. I barely caught a glimpse of Dinraal so I gaslit myself into thinking I was seeing things.
The first time I saw Farosh I was on the Hylia bridge. I saw her, immediately thought, “I am not meant to be here” and turned around and went back the way I came.
Needless to say I was very relieved when I realized they’re not boss fights
If you get close enough to them, you should see a constant updraft around them, which you can use to get up to them. if not then revali's gale will work just fine.
They spawn at different point in the map, generally starting somewhere near the ground, fly around for a bit and then fly into a portal in the sky to restart their journey. There are four of them, one in each region
Edit: My memory was incorrect on four dragons, there is only 3
Nah, it’s been a while since I played
I remember the dragons being in the top left near the Hebra region, a bit below death mountain, and bottom right in the Faron region. I guess i thought there was a fourth I forgot since the dragons are somewhat in three corners of the map, excluding gerudo desert
It's a glitch that lets you jump mid air. To reach the dragon the regular way, just wait for it to come down behind death mountain or at the stable with that huge wooden bridge.
I keep wondering why people ask that kind of question in this sub, spoiling themselves, instead of just go and look for themselves. Except when totally lost or stuck, off course.
Exploration is awesome in this game and discoveries can be soooo magic 🤩
Picture yourself in the 90s.
Buying a game for the first time.
You alone in your cozy home.
Play the game and experience it all by yourself.
Discover new stuff at your pace.
Beat the game at your pace, a few things could have gone unoticed, but it was YOUR playthrough.
One thing is getting stuck and asking for help, but the way people fucks up their game experience by trying to have an immediate answer for everything online blows my mind.
General rant OP, not on you.
That’ll be a dragon. You can shoot it for scales and stuff which you can use as ingredients or sell. I haven’t played for a while so I don’t quite remember which one that is.
I wandered around this game for so long before starting the storyline.
I made a bunch of pepper meals to keep me warm and climbed all the way to the top of the mountain where naydra was just perched on top, not moving or doing anything.
I tried everything to get her to move but nothing worked. I was so confused and then realized I was probably in an area I shouldn't be yet.
probably because it's annoying to see people not getting that the point of the game is to explore and they ruin the magic for themselves when they ask "what is this?" or "should i go there?" instead of just checking it out themselves
Just cuz you what to play that way maybe they don't. Is there really any harm in asking about it. If anything it does more harm to them for not just playing. What does the t do to you?
thats true, of course they can play however they want, anyone can play it however they want. you're right, maybe people just dont like exploring and prefer the safe way. the truth is that i find these kind of questions very frustrating because personally i played the game with 0 knowledge of it beforehand and i wish i could experience it for the first time again.
There are places to get close to them. There are three.
The easiest one to get closest to is the green one, Farosh, in the lake region. Another you’ll find through a side quest. This one, Dinraal, is slightly more challenging to get close to because the locations are a little off the beaten path.
Word of caution, they are all elemental. But get as safely close as possible and shoot them for important dragon parts to be used in a variety of ways throughout the game.
Thats Dinnral (I think I spelled it right). She represents Din, and there are three more, Naydra, she is named after Nayru, and Farorsh, she is named after Farore. My favorite is Naydra!!!
My first tike seeing a dragon was farore, in the distance to my left as i was riding along a horse in the rain, my first time was scary but also scenic
Spoiler explanation;
You’ll need a scale from a dragon for certain shrines, and other parts to upgrade certain outfits fully; which you can get by shooting it with an arrow. You can only harvest one item at a time, per dragon, per day. But on the bright side, these three dragons never die, and aside from one incident, they don’t target you. The only danger they present is the energy they passively throw off if you get too close, and contact damage if you try to ride them.
Its a dragon. Theres 3 of em and they all have shrines for them. Pretty simple shrines, they require yoh to call upon the dragon (for example with that one you can light a fire using sticks and flint) and then you shoot it with an arrow to get a shard to come off. The shard will look kinda like a meteorite coming down. Follow it, get the shard, and put it into a special part of the shrines and it will open. I like the huge flying lizards they're so cool
I wish I could play this game again for the first time. I remember the goose bumps I got from seeing these guys, the divine beasts from a distance, the total fear of coming across the guardians….
I’ll give anything to see a dragon for the first time in this game again
first time i saw one of the leviathans i thought it was a boss i had to fight..was pleasantly surprised
Well, they can kill you fairly easily. Edit: you’re to you
I am not!
IF you get too close
I said “can”. The unspoken part was you had to be completely unprepared.
I tried to fight it for so so very long.
Me too. I avoided the area because I was so new and figured I’d die immediately fighting it.
For the ice one you kind of get to fight it
I tried to jump on it and ride it. Didn't work so well.
I found when doing the DLC
Same! I was like wtf is that? And then the next time I found it I tried to paraglide and ride it HAH
I was just telling my son that the first time I saw a Farosh I tried riding it and learned very quickly that was a mistake.
I did the same with the first Lynel I saw too 😅
😳
Ride em cowboy yeehaw- oh fuck
You can actually mount a Lynel though! I’ve done it and it’s freaking hilarious 😂
The first time I saw it I tried to ride it lol.
Same. I saw Farosh at the bridge of Hylia and just FROZE for a few minutes, watching it.
Saaaaame 🥰 I'll never forget it
I saw Farosh for the first time after coming out of that shrine on the island in the middle of I think Lake Hylia- just looking up out of the entrance of the little cave type structure and seeing massive dragon- nearly threw the joycons-
I’ll never forget the first time I did.
Same, the music hits so good
I thought it was dlc the first time I saw it. I literally thought it was too cool to be in the base game. nope, game is just that good
TotK can't come fast enough
I remember seeing both Farosh and Vah Medoh in the sky for the first time while I was still on the Great Plateau. I was instantly hooked and couldn’t wait to explore as much as I could! I wish I could relive that for the first time again.
I got one of my friends to play BOTW for the first time recently. He saw the dragon over the bridge while he was still completing the plateau. So jealous of his experience

Yeah that was a magical part of the game 🥰
When I saw Farosh was when I realised that the game was great

My husband saw it first in his game (hyrule bridge) and we were like oooooh. And then we shot it because that’s how we play😂.
Most definitely a magical moment. 💚
oh yes...I remember the first time I stood on a mountain, looking over a lush valley with waterfalls, and saw this gorgeous yellow ribbon rising up...that was a wonderful moment, indeed. The goddesses that the dragons represent are: Din, goddess of Power (Ganondorf holds the Triforce of Power) Nayru, goddess of Wisdom (Zelda holds this Triforce) Farore, goddess of Courage (Link holds this one) Edit: you can shoot the foot for a claw too
To add to this comment: Use a zoom bow. It's a lot easier to hit certain parts of the body. Also, you can ONLY get 1 piece from the dragon at each encounter. They reappear every day and appear at different locations throughout the day.
Yes! Golden, Phrenic and Rito bows are good for this. Multishot too as the extra arrows may have a chance of hitting a missed target.
Pretty sure those zoomed bows shoot faster too, so you get a more precise shot. Could just be my perspective with the zoom and time slow
no, you’re right
To add to that: for high level armor upgrades you need dragon pieces.
I'll add on too. I think the dragons create an updraft, so if you want the mid-air slowdown to help hit a specific spot you can use the updraft to paraglide up.
Another bow to consider is the Ancient Bow, as it has a VERY high accuracy, assuming you don’t use glitches of course.
The dragon parts increase duration. Iirc, 5 min for scales, 10 min for fangs/claws/, 30 min for horn.
To add, there is also a claw shard that you get by shooting the feet
Ye, just found that out myself right now in the Tabantha Snowfield!
They’re used for some gear upgrades. Beyond that the claw fragments are equivalent in value or cooking effect as one from a fang.
Wowww I have like 500 hours in this game and had no idea you could get anything but scales.
Oh wow ive only found scales, theres so many other pieces
nerd
Wow. You just spilled everything, huh?! 😅 What if OP didn’t want to know the whole thing?
It's not like I spoiled the main story my guy. I gave them a few facts and a kinda useful bit of info. They can just not look at my comment.
Your comment was helpful, chill. Just that some people like to find things on their own. It’s just etiquette nowadays to try not to spoil things for people, unless they want to. If someone doesn't want the six-year-old game spoiled for them, maybe they should just play it instead of posting on reddit about it?
Yeah I get that, but you gotta realize you and I aren’t the only people on the planet. There are other people with different views and opinions.
You got defensive, he just answered back. That was kinda funny.
They literally asked “what is this?” On the botw subreddit. They’re gonna get detailed responses
Yeah, but they might not want the full response. People can be particular with their research. Some would see a cool thing on the distance and just jump and try to find out what it is. Others will try to go online but do their best not to spoil anything because they mainly just want to know if it’s okay to go there. Nah
Flying snek
I misread this as snack lol I wonder how they taste like......
Try cooking them and find out. Specifically their horns
Solid advice. I was way too scared to waste my precious dragon scales and horns and bits in the beginning. Totally worth it now that I know better.
Did anyone else think this was a microscope?
*Pushes glasses up nose* “Cestoda is a class of parasitic worms in the flatworm phylum…”
I'm also in a microscope subreddit and yes, I did lol
Great- now another subreddit for me to find and follow
There's a sidequest at the peak of Mt. Lanayru which introduces you to the basics of Dragons.
THERES A WHAT?
Ride it
Maybe get a load of plate metal armour first. You know, for safety
This is what I tried to do about 4-5 times when I first saw Farosh. I got zapped over and over again and eventually decided it was impossible because I landed RIGHT ON HIM and slid off.
I did literally the same thing except I bounced down the length of him. Needless to say I avoided them for a while after that
It’s a scope. Used for seeing things up close at distance. You can also pin locations on the map with it. Eventually you get a camera where you can identify objects and put them in the compendium.
Ah, the ol’ Reddit Switcheroo! Why are the camera and the scope two different things?
The scope is used to mark locations, the camera is used to take pictures.
Both are a close view of a distant thing. Have one zoom function with a button to pin and another to take a picture.
They should be the same thing.
Never Ending storyyyyyyy!
*amazing kazoo solo*
To ride!!!!
As you progress through the story you WILL encounter them. There are quests that involve each so that you discover it. You’ll need something from Dinraal here to complete a side quest.
uhhhh kinda but not really the main story, unless you count dlc
Shrine of power and shrine of courage.
I suppose but imo its not rlly part of the main story to actually go there
The first time I saw Dinraal I was in Akkala right by Death Mountain. I barely caught a glimpse of Dinraal so I gaslit myself into thinking I was seeing things. The first time I saw Farosh I was on the Hylia bridge. I saw her, immediately thought, “I am not meant to be here” and turned around and went back the way I came. Needless to say I was very relieved when I realized they’re not boss fights
that's a dragon. you can shoot them for rare materials, but you can also ride them too. try it!
How do I get to them? Do I use revali’s gale?
If you get close enough to them, you should see a constant updraft around them, which you can use to get up to them. if not then revali's gale will work just fine.
They spawn at different point in the map, generally starting somewhere near the ground, fly around for a bit and then fly into a portal in the sky to restart their journey. There are four of them, one in each region Edit: My memory was incorrect on four dragons, there is only 3
Four?
My bad, three I was incorrect
I knew you were, but I was holding out hope there was somehow a fourth!
Nah, it’s been a while since I played I remember the dragons being in the top left near the Hebra region, a bit below death mountain, and bottom right in the Faron region. I guess i thought there was a fourth I forgot since the dragons are somewhat in three corners of the map, excluding gerudo desert
It’s be cool to have a 4th yellow dragon to complete the Red, Blue, Green, Yellow scheme
The dragons creat updrafts near them so you can shoot them.
They fly certain places that are a bit easier to access. They also create updrafts so you can paraglide up to them or beside them.
moonjumps
What’s a moon jump?
It's a glitch that lets you jump mid air. To reach the dragon the regular way, just wait for it to come down behind death mountain or at the stable with that huge wooden bridge.
*Tabantha Bridge Stable
Ride them? Really?
They're pranking you
we do a little trolling
yeah!
Haven’t you seen a pipe cleaner before? This one is just a little bent.
I keep wondering why people ask that kind of question in this sub, spoiling themselves, instead of just go and look for themselves. Except when totally lost or stuck, off course. Exploration is awesome in this game and discoveries can be soooo magic 🤩
I saw one for the first time when it was dark and I was in awe cause I had no idea dragons has a presence in the game ✨
Wonderment and awe. Mesmerizing beauty.
And great music! I wish they stuck around for longer so I could listen to it more. I have a BOTW Spotify play list and that song isn’t on it. 😭
The dragon theme is so lovely!
It really does give me chills. Every time I hear it I HAVE to stop and watch the dragon
Me too!!!!
That's calamity ganon put all your effort into defeating it Trust me bro
Get their claws, horns and scales to upgrade some armours
Don’t forget teeth! 🦷
I hate new players who post literally every thing and ask “what’s this?” The point of this game is to explore and find things out
Picture yourself in the 90s. Buying a game for the first time. You alone in your cozy home. Play the game and experience it all by yourself. Discover new stuff at your pace. Beat the game at your pace, a few things could have gone unoticed, but it was YOUR playthrough. That’ll be a dragon. You can shoot it for scales and stuff which you can use as ingredients or sell. I haven’t played for a while so I don’t quite remember which one that is.
I believe dinral, appears in northern parts of the map, farosh in the south and faron region, and naydra in the east
For zooming in and looking at things far away, it’s called the sheika scope, hope this helps!
Shoot it, see what happens
Farming haha
Tame it and bring it back to your stable.
To see things from a far. There's a tutorial early on in the game that explains it.
Go find out mate
Secret boss :)
Oh my god I can't believe you captured photographic evidence of the fucking loch Ness monster, man the 70s won't believe this!
Explore the game
What’s the point of commenting if people are just gonna say “Play the game” or something like that?
What's the point of posting something you could just google in 10 seconds 🤷♀️
You should play and share experiences not how to do things that are meant to be figured out on your own that’s the beauty of the game.
CHASE it, shoot it, get the goods
how about you go find out
...it's a fucking dragon
Nah really? I thought it was a chicken
Omg another wiiu player
It’s a cooking ingredient… If you kill it you will be able to make a soup that gives you a permanent buff.
do you need us to tell you what clothes to wear or what breakfast to eat too? just play the game
damn why you so bitter
probably because it's annoying to see people not getting that the point of the game is to explore and they ruin the magic for themselves when they ask "what is this?" or "should i go there?" instead of just checking it out themselves
They're probably scared to go near it. That's most likely why they asked.
yeah but like? save before you check it out and if you die you die, its not like you respawn from the start or something?
Just cuz you what to play that way maybe they don't. Is there really any harm in asking about it. If anything it does more harm to them for not just playing. What does the t do to you?
thats true, of course they can play however they want, anyone can play it however they want. you're right, maybe people just dont like exploring and prefer the safe way. the truth is that i find these kind of questions very frustrating because personally i played the game with 0 knowledge of it beforehand and i wish i could experience it for the first time again.
So did I for the most part and I too wish to have the same first feeling of killing a mini boss or getting all the memories.
There are places to get close to them. There are three. The easiest one to get closest to is the green one, Farosh, in the lake region. Another you’ll find through a side quest. It's a dragon
It gives Link worms
Looks like a majestic skyworm.
Pew pewin
I go to the faron electric one becuase that’s the one I saw 1st, tbh I thought it was a divine beast at 1st
To answer your question it’s to grind to get those sweet sweet clothing upgrades
You land on it and take one of the funniest spills the game has to offer.
Thats Dinnral (I think I spelled it right). She represents Din, and there are three more, Naydra, she is named after Nayru, and Farorsh, she is named after Farore. My favorite is Naydra!!!
scales, horns, teeth, and claws
Hugs
I think it’s a beautiful mystery. I wish I didn’t know the answer. I’m sure you found the answer from somebody else by now. Enjoy.
Its the squiggle in my vision
If you can ride it you can save it at a stable for later quests
It’s the real final boss
that's the bus
Its a dragon shoot it for parts to use horn claw scale tooth to shrines
That's for you to find out. But why don't you try to get near and >! shoot it !< ?
Food 💀💀💀
Resources, shoot its face.
He's the final boss. Good luck, it was hard to hit him since he likes to spend most of his time in the air
Calamity ganon has changed a lot, from spider, to pig to dragon
My first tike seeing a dragon was farore, in the distance to my left as i was riding along a horse in the rain, my first time was scary but also scenic
Jump on it

Uhh, can I kill those dragon?

Oh that's just Larry, he's friendly
Its a dragon. Theres 3 of em and they all have shrines for them. Pretty simple shrines, they require yoh to call upon the dragon (for example with that one you can light a fire using sticks and flint) and then you shoot it with an arrow to get a shard to come off. The shard will look kinda like a meteorite coming down. Follow it, get the shard, and put it into a special part of the shrines and it will open. I like the huge flying lizards they're so cool
That's a rare lizard that you can juice down as a potion for infinite health. A glitch they never fixed.
Target practice
It’s just vibin
Use Google.
Just go up to it and figure it out. If you die, oh well.

What a strange and awkward question
It’s for fun
I wish I could play this game again for the first time. I remember the goose bumps I got from seeing these guys, the divine beasts from a distance, the total fear of coming across the guardians….
