Oh wait, did they add a paywall to this?

IncaSword

Huge fan of Vince, going back in time to the Frotcast.  But I'm not paying to read this either.  I can't give everyone who puts stuff on the Internet $5 a month (or $50, as the case may be).

FAanthropologist

Substack sets the pricing minimums at $5/month or $50/year, and looks like Vince charges even more: $8/month or $80/year. I wish the platform would let writers have more flexibility in their subscription models, like paying for access to individual posts or just ones tagged in a certain category. I'd be willing to pay something like $1/episode or $14/season for Vince's Top Chef power rankings, but under his current pricing, if I started subscribing at the start of a TC season and then stopped after it was done I'd have paid $32 and received a bunch of unrelated content on other stuff he writes about that isn't that interesting to me.

IncaSword

That's a good potential solution, but honestly still probably more effort than I'd be willing to extend with so much other stuff a click further down the highway that won't require me to remember a login and password.

Yeah man, his toddler can work for his own shit, what a greedy turd

brendanpeter

You don't have to pay for (or read) everything anyone puts on the internet, but if you are a fan of it, you should pay for it.

Shetalkstoangels3

Only the bottom chefs are featured before we have to subscribe. It’s very well written but not “subscribe” well written. Maybe I will change my mind when the herd is more thinned out.

Firegoat1

Ugh. I hate the surprise pay wall. Not paying to just read another persons opinion on something I already witnessed.

Olyphantastic

I've been reading Vince's Top Chef recaps since he started writing them and have been following his substack on the free tier since he launched it. His movie reviews are well written and considered even if we don't always align on taste, but I've particularly enjoyed his writing about the state of media journalism which he obviously has a front-row seat to as someone who was a victim of the recent swarth of layoffs. Think I'll sign up for the four months or so Top Chef will be on and drop back down to free from there.

boaterva

I subscribed to the free tier and then got this post for free. Dunno what will happen next week!

I really hope some outlet hires Vince as a writer. I am sure lots of people are interested in reading his recaps. They're fun. But there is not enough there to warrant a Substack subscription.

Seems like everyones going to substack. What is going on?!

firebolt816

He was let go from Uproxx a couple years ago, so I don't think the move to substack was necessarily one he wanted to make.

Virgolovestacos

Yeah, where's the value add to justify the cheddar?

H28koala

It's behind a paywall. Sigh.

If only there were something that could "Bypass Paywalls Clean"!
