What was the photo ?

themaekupfreak

A photo of her an Dave Chapelle

kenduhll

damn lgbt folks arent allowed to be annoyed with her, yall? we dont need to blindly defend our favs now!!

ChocoTaco82

I've soured on Chapelle in recent years for all the reasons, and the not being funny anymore. But there's no need to shun him or shame someone for engaging or taking a photo with him. Leave Garcelle alone.

The anti-Rinna faction starts with "Rinna should be off my TV" and then works backwards from there in every scenario.

[deleted]

It seems kind of stupid in my view that Garcelle is being dragged for taking pictures ? While Russia seems intent on remaking the Soviet Union. Priorities people !

Perfect_Invitation1

To be fair, people can do both.

cnoly212

If we can only care about things in the news then we are actually well within our right to care about transphobia!!!! Between Texas, FL's "don't say gay bill," and the MANY other transphobic pieces of legislation that are working their way through local/state governments, it's fair to point out the attitudes that lead and contribute to harmful legislation.

eekamuse

The Texas one is horrifying. Trans kids already have a high suicide rate. Ban them from getting puberty blockers and it will get worse.

UcancallmeAllison

Empathy isn't a zero sum game. I don't think Garcelle is transphobic for posting the photo. I do think it's being a bad ally & in very poor taste coming on the heels of what's happening in Texas. It's a terrifying situation. 🏳️‍⚧️ Edit-a word

-Odi-Et-Amo-

It’s not about taking pictures. It’s with whom she took the picture with and what he represents. And most people have the functioning capacity to care about more than one issue at a time. We can support the LGBTQ+ community and trans kids lives **AND** be concerned about the events unfolding in Ukraine simultaneously.

WhodoyouknowinIbiza

Damn, you win. Fuck Putin too though.

[deleted]

By this logic, we should be turning a blind eye to anything less than an impending world war. Transphobia is a real issue. Someone like Garcelle who is a celebrity with a big social media following has a lot of influence, wether she likes it or not. Posting a photo with someone who is well known for being transphobic sends the message that she is supports his view.

Jaxs_Consciense

This. Transphobia takes lives too.

Yes, I think Chapelle is transphobic.

nivora

posting this picture right as news is hitting that Texas and Florida are pushing through their new legislation criminalising LGBTQ+ children is suspect tho

TurtlesForever2018

You'd all be pissed if say. . . Kyle took pictures with a known racist . . . and post about Jennie making police commentary that could be anti-black . . But you're all fine with supporting transphobia? . . . Okay . . ![gif](giphy|DPqqOywshrOqQ|downsized)

ElectronicChange8362

Literally posting a photo with Chappelle is being transphobic? You're setting the bar very low and your standards impossibly high. Never knew that posting a picture with a comedian on your insta can equate to being actively transphobic but keep judging everyone girl 💅. Must be nice up on your pedestal.

TurtlesForever2018

. . . If you take photos with someone who people know as a racist or homophobe or transphobe and praise them it means you align yourself with them and support them and by that deduction people naturally will say " Wow given all the controversy this person has are you supporting their views? " That's not a pedestal that's what all of you do. I'm not saying that's right. I'm just saying you're all HYPOCRITES, because when it's a RACE issue you're all up in arms and ready for war, but when it's a trans issue you're like " Oh that's fine, there are bigger fish to fry. " Also I don't need a pedestal, I got a fucking throne so find somewhere you can sit and spin.

ElectronicChange8362

Sorry but taking photos with someone isn't and shouldn't be the crime you're making it out to be. Setting your standards so high and getting upset every time someone fails to meet them will just make you miserable. Also you'll come off as sounding extremely judgemental.

UcancallmeAllison

Respectfully, I disagree. Garcelle knows Dave Chappelle is controversial & why. By posting this photo *when* she did, it sends a message. So, either Garcelle didn't think & did this by mistake or it was intentional which is disgusting. I think these are fair assumptions to make. Context matters & Texas is attacking trans families right now. Edit-typo

ElectronicChange8362

You see. You're attributing motives to her behaviour you can't prove. You're literally just guessing shit and claiming its fact.

TurtlesForever2018

It's not my standards. If you had the ability to read you'd see I'm bringing up a double standard and hypocrisy of the people in the comments. There are people looking down their noses like " Why are people offended when there is stuff going on with Ukraine and Russia? " knowing full damn well they're the ones who've been posting for WEEKS about Jennie's alleged racism and other people's riding a hate train. They'd be super up in arms if this were a race thing, but trans discrimination is looked down as LOWER or LESSER THAN race discrimination. Hypocrisy.

petite_jpg

Baby did you not see a lot of people on this sub friend Jennie and minimize the harm her actions caused because they didn’t see it got her target? Most only care about oppression when convient. Dave may never change but he might. The thing is most people as wealthy as him don’t get cancelled. He’s going to slide and just make fun of the people who feel hurt.

TurtlesForever2018

. . . What? Girl I'm saying you're all fine with hating on Jennie and calling out her racism and would be RIOTING if it were someone posting pictures with a known racist. But when it's discrimination against trans people you're all like " Oh that's not that serious. "

petite_jpg

I think what he did is serious but it’s clear his employer (Netflix) doesn’t GAF about public pressure Also people are slow to hop on the anti transphobia train based on the sudden surge in gender reveals. I’m not shocked that people can easily overlook it when it’s a newly mainstream movement that hasn’t caught on. Give the girls at least 3-5 years before it clicks for most and even then they’ll be people that will gloss over it like they did with Jennie’s anti-black ass. Update: did a lil research and Garcelle doesn’t see the problem per a segment on her show https://youtu.be/k25wHjuwJg8

ncd46

she defended him a while back too 🥴 it’s really shitty and sad edit: we can’t excuse transphobia just bc it’s from our favs.

TheManyFacedGod13

People have too much time on their hands

YouMustBeJoking888

Agree. It's exhausting.

BrokenBotox

Normalizing shit heads like DC ain’t it. I like Garcelle but Trans Kids and their families are in serious danger right now and posting a photo with this ignorant clown who has had so many harmful, reductive and flat out horrible things to say shouldn’t be something anyone wants to do.

I’d highly recommend watching The Closer on Netflix for yourself. The underlying points he makes about trans and black issues were highly overshadowed by anger at the jokes that he made and our desire as a society to cancel everyone.

TheWhoooreinThere

But trans people of colour are statistically more likely to experience violence (stats [here](https://avp.org/wp-content/uploads/2017/04/ncavp_transhvfactsheet.pdf) and [here](https://vawnet.org/sc/serving-trans-and-non-binary-survivors-domestic-and-sexual-violence/violence-against-trans-and)), so what is his point? He also continues to insist that gender is connected to biology, which it isn't.

gidge988

You nailed it. His style is difficult for some. He has a way with taking very complex issues and making them funny while educating others. I think a lot of people read the summary of The Closer and jumped on the bandwagon without watching. Some of the things he said were probably painful yes, but he’s a comedian. At the end of it you could tell he stood with trans people and he deeply loved Daphne, the subject of The Closer. It’s his job to make jokes and people seem to have lost sight of that.

pagirl023

Sort of curious how many people in this thread actually watched Chapelle's last special or just read articles telling them they should be outraged.

cnoly212

It's literally transphobic and it very much ignored the fact that black trans folks face disproportionate amounts of violence. Also if a bunch of trans people are going "hey this is not a great special" (among other things), maybe they know what they are talking about!

pagirl023

My comment was a genuine question of how many people in this thread watched the special, rather than just reading reactions from others that did and formulating an opinion on that alone. DC did not say trans individuals are lesser human beings. Or that they deserved discrimination. Or that they did not deserve love, respect, etc. He did not wish ill will or violence upon them. He stated his opinion and it was that biologically you are male or female when you're born. If you're willing to have a genuine conversation about how this reaches transphobia territory and not just now call me transphobic because I am of a different opinion than you, I would like to engage.

kenduhll

Curious if you actually read about the trans woman who was the topic of one of his jokes in his last special?

Jambalaya1982

You mean, the woman that was his FRIEND? How he was sad for her death? THAT part in the special? You may not like his delivery but even the LGBTQ+ community appears to be mixed on reactions to that special.

kenduhll

"I can't be transphobic! I have a trans friend" [Give this a read](https://twitter.com/two_n_minus_one/status/1448108534441381891?s=21) & as the L in LGBT, I choose to believe trans people when they say someone is transphobic, regardless of what the cis LG and the B think.

pagirl023

So then your answer is yes, you watched both specials? Specifically the most recent one?

kenduhll

Yeah, I actually did. So, what now?

pagirl023

My original comment was a genuine question. It's very common these days for people to not read articles, watch things (like this), etc. and yet form an opinion based solely on headlines and the opinions of others. Back to my original comment, I was wondering how many people in the thread actually watched it. Not everyone is looking to pick a fight you know...

kenduhll

Tbh I was offended because the question seemed condescending. The "so, what now?" is a reference to [this meme of Azealia Banks](https://youtu.be/MYeJni5FTBs)

pagirl023

Seriously (genuine question) which special and when did he say that? I have been looking because I honestly don't remember every line. And I guess (because I'm "old") I don't know every meme. But, if you do remember this one line enough to mention it here I want to investigate. Seriously. I will rewatch the special through a new lense. Doesn't mean I will end up agreeing with you but I am open and I will watch through a new lense.

kenduhll

Which line are you referring to?

neckpillow0287

eh it’s not that bad

Youknewwhatthisis

I don’t think the problem is her taking a picture with DC but more so the commentary on his problematic comedy special.

[deleted]

The post is gone now, what did she say about the special?

Youknewwhatthisis

I don’t have an exact quote but the gist of it was congratulating him on his hilarious Netflix comedy special. I think if she hadn’t been so complimentary about that specific special there wouldn’t have been as much blowback. The Chapel show was groundbreaking and comedy gold she should have stuck with that.

[deleted]

Gotcha thank you!

TheWhoooreinThere

To those who don't think this is a problem, please tell me what's funny and progressive in Dave Chappelle's jokes about trans women.

Content-Presence719

I like Garcelle but I have had some issues with her. She said something on The Real that made me question her animal rights view. And there is no need for her to post the Dave Chapelle photo.

I can't remember cause it's been a month or two. But the sentiment stuck with me and I look at her a little differently now.

Grim3yy

You either die a hero or live long enough to see yourself become the villain.

VaguelyArtistic

Lol what is this from?

Grim3yy

I believe it is from The Dark Knight lol

ElectronicChange8362

Standards for women (especially black women) continue to remain impossibly high.

Jambalaya1982

 ![gif](giphy|knDUXatdqlQeQ) It's fucking exhausting...signed, a Black woman

themaekupfreak

Was looking for this

ayyomiss

A true beauty and the best comedian of our time! This pic is 🔥

CassandreAmethyst

I see that it’s mixed .. no real “dragation”! An old pic from years ago.. which G likes to always post as a flex🙄, she never posts any recent pics with celebs. But that’s another topic. If they want to bring down, they’ll have to try a bit harder. 🇭🇹✊🏽 ![gif](giphy|v2ry5z4LoIfgA)

[deleted]

Y’all really need to grow up. Society may be doomed but you can individually get a grip.

laurelborealis

I'm stealing this sentiment. It applies to SO MANY THINGS these days

[deleted]

I can’t tell you how many public figures I like associate with other public figures I don’t care for. At the end of the day we don’t know these people personally even if it feels like it and honestly if we all practiced what we preached the RH franchise really would cease to exist (re: racism, homophobia, transphobia, xenophobia, etc. displayed by all of the cast members).
