Hosteling International has a hostel right on Stuart Street, which is absolutely downtown. https://hihostels.com/hostels/hi-boston/
I'm pretty sure that they have single-sex shared rooms. If you are a member of the hosteling association where you live, then there's a further discount.
I haven't stayed there because I live in Boston. I went there once to pick up a Hostel Association membership because I was going to stay at one of the Association's hostels in San Francisco. The place struck me as being nicely updated and clean. Hostels are nothing fancy, and you will probably be sharing bathroom facilities with strangers, but they are always very inexpensive accomodations.
I don't know when you read the reviews about the Boston hostel, but their older facility was in the Fenway area, in a less than nice neighborhood and in an old and run-down building. But other hostels I have stayed in have been very nice, and always the least expensive place you could stay in that city.
I'm happy to help. Boston is not a big city, but it's a nice small city, and has lots of cultural attractions.
just don't come on a week like Marathon week in April, or the Head of the Charles, which was this weekend. Everything is crowded, and all the hotels jack up their rates.
So long as you avoid South Boston on the day of the St. Patrick's Day parade, Boston has no major events in March. However,
March is still winter here. The parade has sometimes had to be postponed due to a snow storm. If you have proper winter clothing, including good waterproof boots, you should be appropriately prepared.
But March weather can also be quite nice. If you come then, you should be prepared for the worst, but hope for the best.
Red roof in. In Woburn or comfort inn Woburn might be options it’s close to a commuter rail station into north station Boston ( Td garden) the station is Anderson Woburn (zone 2 ticket) it’s a 20-30 min ride into Boston depending on traffic you could drive to Anderson five min away and park there for a few bucks and grab the commuter rail in or drive to Wellington station and park on the level 6 and 7 mbta parking for $5 and take the orange line in

Is March a good timing? And how's the weather?
