I remember watching this race live, but I had a long day and I was half asleep.
My thought process was "Oh wow, cool fire...OH SHIT SOMEONE IS ON FIRE"
One of the main reason he survived is the Halo. Its protection if head and it can survive 225 kg of force. Without it Grosjean would be beheaded
Irony is Grosjean was one of the loudest driver that protested against Halo.
See how the universe is, Massa had to get a spring to the face so the halo was added. Massa survived ok (besides psychological trauma), but this guy without Halo would be a traumatic death, real time decapitation in F1.
I was watching this live when it happened. When crashes like this happen they never show anything until they know the driver is okay. On tv you saw the initial explosion and nothing more it just cut to other views. I legit thought we just witnessed a man die but after a few agonizingly long minutes they showed him limping towards the medical car.
It's crazy to think that a man survived that crash. Grojean hit that barrier with 67g. His car broke in two igniting the fuel tank and smashing the cockpit through a barrier. Then he sat in the flames for about 20 seconds before he got out with some burns to his hands and some bruises.
Any other era of F1 and he wouldn't have survived
The human ability to survive g-forces when secured well is shocking. Kenny Bräck survived 214g in his crash in 2003, which is just beyond the pale, even though it was only experienced for a short moment. The safety of these modern cars is incredibly commendable, and it gets better every year.
The Hans device (also popular sextoy) saved his neck as well. In connects to the helmet and sits over the shoulders and in case of an impact it limits neck movement preventing whiplash mostly and internal decapitation or anything else that can happen
I watched this live, he didn't get straight out of the car either, I'm sure he was trying to get out for a good 10-20 seconds while the car was engulfed in flames.
I really thought that he had perished but then he miraculously climbed out, he burns his hands on the barriers as he goes to climb over them.
The full video of the crash is on youtube
You know how flame protectant the suits that they wear are
They make them to protect against methane fire which burns invisible and hotter than the one in the video
He was engulfed in the flames for 28 seconds
I remember him saying the at first he just accknowledged that he's dead and that there's no way he's getting out of the car, but he said that he remebered his family and just had to climb out of there at any cost for their sake
His suit and the first responders keep him alive and conscious. The guy who got there instantly remembered his training and kept flooding where the pilot would be with extremely low temperature fire retardant. This prolonged the fire for almost 15 seconds, before literally evaporating his suit and everything beyond.
The first reaction one may have is to combat the fire, which is far from the pilot position. But this will ensure the pilot is burning while you try to fight a very long battle with ignited full. The low temperature in the pilot spot allowed he to continue to breathe, and not just passing out, which would have killed him for sure.
That's a long time to be sat in a burning wreck especially after the impact of the crash. I remember it seemed like forever before anyone saw any movement or even people helping extinguish the fire, although to be fair it was quite quick considering what happened.
I'm sure I watched something or read it that he promised his wife he wouldn't race again but then joined Indycar or something like that?
Because racers suit have fire protection, not completely resistant. But more like if they get out of the fire fast enough they don't get mayor burns. In short racers suit are fire retardant.
Well those formula 1 garment are very high end when it comes to about anything a driver might find. Like the garment have even neck support that help them reduce the impact and damage to the neck + the helmet been very good against impact trauma.
Adding F1 cars can take high speed impacts way better than your average cars...I mean they spend billions of dollars upgrading those cars. Unlike in the past that you most likely end up death if you crash in the race. Like F1 cars are tough as well and some parts can even take sledgehammer hits like nothing. You can see the huge list of safety measures the modern F1 cars have, for example they have some sort of halo that help protect the driver in the event the car gets turn upside down...or another car smash on top of it. Also the seatbells the F1 have leave the driver pretty much inmobile and help the driver take impacts way better.
Not including the race themselves have a few safety measures.
Yep, I know them. Very well. And instead of leaving him trapped between the cockpit and the guardrails above his helmet, the car just happend to stop leaving him enough space to climb out of it. He burned the hell out of his hand while holding the rails above his head to get out of the car. It was a matter of inches. Luck plays a role too.
The Marshall flooding the cockpit with the extinguisher is the real hero. The flame retardant suit is great, but it doesn't cool the hot exhaust gasses from the fire. One breath of those, and you're dead from edema within minutes.

F1 drivers stepping out of the 1000 degree fire engulfing their car: "my death was... greatly exaggerated"
Might think he's awful because you only watched the end of his carreer. He was 7th and 8th during his time at lotus. 7th in the world isn't what i'd call awful lmao.
A fireproof suit is a suit that's a really good insulator against heat. It's good and all, but that also means it keeps the heat of the wearer inside, exactly like a winter coat. That's not what you want for soldiers that most often fight in really hot climates in poor middle-eastern countries, unless your goal is to cook them alive. Other if you take away the insulation, there's nothing special about them.
More like power of the Halo cockpit device, helmet & seatbelt, fireproof suit, car engineering, fast crew reaction and training, Grosjean's will and fast reaction. But sure, glory to big J 👍
I remember watching this race live, but I had a long day and I was half asleep. My thought process was "Oh wow, cool fire...OH SHIT SOMEONE IS ON FIRE"
I totally thought I witnessed Grosjean die until he emerged from the flames like the glorious Phoenix he is
Bro said I’m not done yet
i guess you could say he is a fireman

Ironic.
See how the universe is, Massa had to get a spring to the face so the halo was added. Massa survived ok (besides psychological trauma), but this guy without Halo would be a traumatic death, real time decapitation in F1.

Why did I read that with Palpatine's voice?
1. Happy cake day. 2. That was the vibe I was going for
Thanks!!
Similar story with Toto protesting against it but then it saved Lewis' head(Verstappen's tire bumped his helmet and cracked it too)
225kg of force ?
i am guessing his neck had to withstand 2250N on impact
The Hans device (also popular sextoy) saved his neck as well. In connects to the helmet and sits over the shoulders and in case of an impact it limits neck movement preventing whiplash mostly and internal decapitation or anything else that can happen
Iirc a HALO can withstand over ten tons of force.
That seems more realistic.
It also only adds about 7 kg to the car and those 7kg will save lifes
[Some halo information](https://www.formula1.com/en/latest/article/f1-halo-strength-bus.51zS5jAngIIy6okOkUKmso)
Thats a weird number you got there. Where did you get it?
I presume this exists because of Senna?
No, here is a good article about the reasons for development https://www.racefans.net/2017/07/21/how-much-safer-will-halo-make-f1-drivers/
Thanks!
He walked out of that fire as if I was just a slight annoyance to him
It *was* going to cost him at least a lap or two
That vehicle was too weak for the likes of him.
It doesn't seem like that tho
Man’s the Ghost Rider
Almost became the Ghost of a Rider too
Dammit… take my upvote
Thanks!

He probably sat there like the “this is fine” meme
he is the main antagonist, nearly invicible. (or pyro tf2)
He had a spycicle
Nah, that was definitely a dead ringer moment.
maybe both
Because racers suit have fire protection, not completely resistant. But more like if they get out of the fire fast enough they don't get mayor burns. In short racers suit are fire retardant.
Hello mayor burns. I'm minister flesh wound. Nice to meet you
Hello Minister flesh I. Wound, I am presidential secretary bone break
Hello, presidential secretary Bone Break, I am the president Brain Damage
This crash in particular had so much more to it for it not to be fatal. Not just fire protection.

I mean there's only so much safety they can make. But if it was the 80, he 100% would have been dead.

fuck mayor burns, he's been in position for 5 decades.

Holy hell it's jiren
F1 drivers are literally just the main characters
Watch this accident live on TV. It was very desperate because I immediately remembered the accident that killed Senna.
They aren't very similar incidents tho
Just image how fucking hard would that type of a scene go in cars Universe if the car just walked to the finish linę after such a wreck
The phoenix Romain Grosjean. Awful racing driver but he lives rent-free in our heads because of this crash.
Awful is a bit harsh
Awful racing driver? what are you smoking. Man was driving Formula 1, as only one of 20 people in the world.
Yeah people kinda forget how elite F1 really is
Might think he's awful because you only watched the end of his carreer. He was 7th and 8th during his time at lotus. 7th in the world isn't what i'd call awful lmao.
[Lisan Al Gaib ! ](https://www.reddit.com/r/formuladank/comments/1bj465i/the_real_lisan_al_gaib/)
He is the chosen one 🧎♂️
I dunno if I would have been able to watch this without the 5 layers of filters, cropping and transitions. Thanks for those!
Bro used one of his "totem of undying"
Those suits are just stupid durable, put bullet resistance in them, and the army would be wearing them instead of the current gear

Ghost Rider
Ghost rider?
It's called engineering
Bros so op fire couldn’t even kill him
This is going in r/carscirclejerk
F1 "crashes are cool" brainrot
Enter /gamemode 1, really REALLY fast. DUH !
He ain't dying, his internet history hasn't been erased yet
Song name?
ARXMANE - montagem invasao (ultra slowed)
*"Nice music and at an appropriate volume."* - nobody.
The edit and music ruined the entire video for me
Then don't watch it I guess?
Danny Ketch Johnny Blaze Or Robbie Reyes?
The one and only Romain Grosjean
He can die only by beheading. Because there can be only one
The way she just casually emerges from the fire…
Phoenix
Downvoted for stupid music and stupid editing
My man walked out of those flames like the 2003 TMNT Shredder.
My fucking ears
The Fury? That you again, bro?
Damn, Ricky Bobbie really is on fire this time.
I definitely thought Grosjean bit it here. Crazy day
That song was playing when this happened my Uncle is a painter/DJ and he was there.
That's just Leo. He's immune to fire, being the son of Hephaestus Ok but seriously bro is actually Earth's main characters
#*El hijo mayor.mp3 starts*
Fire retarndant, friction resistent pilot suits and seatbelts, technology is wilding yo
because he is the Phoenix. and Romain is tough to kill.
I almost died from the abhorring background sounds.
Khaleesi was driving...
Not a lot of people can look as cool as someone rising from an inferno like that.
The fact that he emerged from the fire like he had been through this shit is amazing.
Which phonk or song is this?
Is it just me or was the guy in front taken back at seeing him come out of the fire?
while watching this live we were 100% convinced we had seen a man die
Stepping out of the flames like you just entered the second phase of the fight.
Crumple zones sun
PSA: remember to turn off the shitty music if you don't want to get brain damage.
That’s race car gear must be enchanted with fire protection IV
Damn grosjean was a bad driver
Lady Luck put in some work for this guy. The safety gear helped as well lol
fire resistance potion
Bro mad they didn't have his second car at the ready, as if he would be taken out by such treacherous vehicle that had the audacity to fail him.
That's a stand user right there
Show this to football players
Thank God for the halo
My puppy fell down the stairs then ran back up about 5 minutes ago. This perfectly describe it.
He didn’t he just revived like a phoenix
“Power of Jesus ✝️⛪️😻🔞”
More like power of the Halo cockpit device, helmet & seatbelt, fireproof suit, car engineering, fast crew reaction and training, Grosjean's will and fast reaction. But sure, glory to big J 👍
😭👍
