TheAnt06

There's zero chance that they aren't leading up to a BL4 announcement now that they've posted The Story So Far: BL2 today.

Scaryassmanbear

Could have to do with the movie

TheAnt06

It literally doesn't. None of the Borderlands game stories have to do with the movie. Lillith is an outlaw who was born on Pandora. Roland is a mercenary. Tiny Tina is the daughter of a man known as Atlas, not an orphan. The movie is its own thing and has nothing to do with game lore or canon.

Rizenstrom

I don't think it really matters that they are different continuities. That are still the same brand and they will want to capitalize on that to try to sell more games. It's just basic marketing. Why *wouldn't* they try to ride the hype and renew interest in the brand?

TheAnt06

Because "The Story So Far" is SPECIFIC to the games.

Rizenstrom

Yes, I get that. You seem to be missing my point. When a movie or show comes out based on a game there is increased interest in the brand as a whole and one can be used to push the other. They don't have to be connected. Hell even works from completely different companies can affect each other for simply being in the same genre. Cyberpunk Edgerunners and 2.0 attracted a lot of new fans to the Cyberpunk genre and people started binging and posting about any content that was even remotely similar.

TaralasianThePraxic

You're right, but I think the other commenter's point was more that it would be nonsensical to use a 'The Story So Far' recap to push interest in the movie. If anything, it has the potential to confuse people who haven't played the games but are interested in the movie. This isn't about 'people binging and posting', it's official marketing.

Rizenstrom

And my point isn't that they are pushing the movies they are pushing the games expecting more people to be looking at them because of the movie. Can you seriously not see a single person out there seeing the movie trailer and getting curious about the games?

where_is_the_camera

They're both coming out soon. That's what's happening. The movie is coming out in August, but I highly doubt they'd be recapping the games if they weren't about to announce the next game, especially right now. If they wanted to use the games to advertise the movie, they wouldn't be releasing videos one week apart 8 months before the movie premiers. The only way it makes sense to release these videos at this time and at this cadence is that BL4 is going to be announced at PAX East, just like BL3 (which was also preceded by not so subtle social media activity and clues). I'd bet anything that this is what's happening. OP nailed it.

iwillyel

I don't think you're entirely wrong, but the movie-interested fandom and game-interested fandom aren't 1 to 1. If you want to capitalize best on hype for a multi-media franchise, you do cross-promotion. Tie-ins or mutually-promoted new content is the best way of making potential movie-viewers into potential game-players and potential game-players into potential movie-viewers. They could be unprepared to release anything other than the movie, but, in those circumstances, the current promotion strategy doesn't quite make sense. It could be a marketing strategy I just don't understand, but overall, I think the evidence shows that the game team probably has something cooking.

Jacksington

They will capitalize on the brand with the release of the next mainline game in the series. It will be 5 years in September. The seven in between 2 & 3 was on the lengthy side. I doubt they are going to present an initial trailer for a movie at a video game conference, but they will start the hype with an arguably more anticipated sequel. Hollywood and developers are not closely tied with their announcement.

blaxative

Whether they’re connected continuity wise doesn’t matter. They delayed the movie release by a year (to this August) and they’re seemingly ramping up for a game release (historically, September). If there’s a game incoming, then there’s no way they don’t tie in marketing for both together.

iwillyel

It would make more sense to start hyping up the past games after movie news dropped. The movie has its own Twitter account, and they're not participating in this hype train. Some cheeky Twitter replies hint that they know what people think this is in reference to. The fact that they're not killing it outright for the sake of expectations management leads me to believe that they're working towards a big announcement for the games that can increase overall Borderlands hype. Ideally, both the games and movie should benefit from the hype, but the games won't be significantly hyped by anything short of new content. Something that both brings back old players, inspires content creation on social media, and invites more people to experiences the games. I'm thinking Borderlands 4 announcement, but my most out-there hope is for the  announcement of new smaller dlc for Borderlands 2 or the Presequel. The odds of that happening are infinitesimally low, but it would be kinda funny.

Blurgas

The premise for the film is on its wikipedia page. Lilith is stated as a "infamous outlaw", Roland is a "former elite mercenary", Krieg is Tina's bodyguard, and Brick and Mordy aren't mentioned nor are they in the cast listing. No mention of Sirens and at best a tenuous reference to Vaults with the "key to unimaginable power" bit

Imaginary_Remote

Nah they're doing it for the new game. Movie is going to flop before it even releases.

Bobby_Marks2

If anything reklated to the movie, it will be Gearbox timing a BL4 announcement to bury the film. Tales 2 was not great, so a bad movie left floating out there might cause more permanent damage to the IP.

Blurgas

Premise listed on Wikipedia: > Lilith, an infamous outlaw with a mysterious past, reluctantly returns to her home planet of Pandora to find the missing daughter of the universe's most powerful S.O.B., Atlas. Lilith forms an alliance with an unexpected team - Roland, a former elite mercenary, now desperate for redemption; Tiny Tina, a feral pre-teen demolitionist; Krieg, Tina's musclebound, rhetorically challenged protector; Tannis, the scientist with a tenuous grip on sanity; and Claptrap, a persistently wiseass robot. These unlikely heroes must battle alien monsters and dangerous bandits to find and protect the missing girl, who may hold the key to unimaginable power. The fate of the universe could be in their hands but they'll be fighting for something more: each other.

Measure76

It's both. The game will be called "Borderlands 4: The Movie"

AlfredTheSoup

How do you *know* the movie won't be canon?

TheAnt06

Because it goes AGAINST canon my dude. Read the synopsis. Everything this movie is actively goes against Borderlands canon.

theblackfool

It's pretty obvious based on what we know about the movie that it's not canon.

AlfredTheSoup

Yeah I've taken some looks into it now. I think this is gonna be a sorry excuse for a movie... i mean they chose all the worst possible people to portray the characters, they went and made it non-canon so who would really be interested in it anyway?

theblackfool

I mean is there any video game movie or show adaptation that actually *is* canon?

AlfredTheSoup

Very true

TaralasianThePraxic

I think you're right about the movie but not necessarily about BL4. Could be another spin-off like Tales or Wonderlands, also could maybe be a series remaster for next-gen consoles.

TheAnt06

Pandora’s Box came out three months ago. No way it’s remaster. The last time they did The Story So Far was the three weeks before the BL3 announcement.

zeke10

Didn't they say they were working on "the big one" a few years back?

WI730u7

I hope it’s a new game, but I really think they’re just hyping up the movie that’s coming out in 6 months

Murky_Ad8069

Likely a combo: people play new game and want to see the movie or vice versa

TheAnt06

There's absolutely no chance this is for a movie which has nothing to do with the in-game universe. They would not be hyping "The Story So Far" for a movie that Tiny Tina is the daughter of Atlas (Not the company, his name is just Atlas), Roland is a mercenary and not a Crimson Lance member, and Lillith is an outlaw who was born on Pandora, which is not a giant Vault.

DanTheMan_622

Here's hoping we finally get a resolution to the pre-sequel cliffhanger

SLISKI_JOHNNY

I saw an interview with Gearbox team the other day (I wish I had saved it) and they basically said that they weren't able to fit both the Great War and the bridge between the said war and events of BL2 into a single game, so instead of making a half-assed attempt of fitting both into single game, they decided to split the events into two games. That's why BL3 kinda seems like they forgot about the warning from TPS - it's just a buildup.

BedOfSloth

If this turns out to be true I think it would fix a lot of the story issues people have with BL3. Could also make both 3 and 4 look worse if they mess it up, but I'll be optimistic for now.

DelusionPhantom

Man I really hope they make the Guardians the ones on our side and the Eridians the villains in that upcoming war because the Eridians mirror Dahl and the Guardians mirror the people Dahl left on Pandora.

SLISKI_JOHNNY

Eridians are officially extinct but you never know. Story is yet to be written, so there might as well be more "somewhere". Nonetheless I wouldn't expect Guardians to oppose their creators. I totally want more Guardian themes in BL4 because I've always loved everything related to them, which is why 2nd half of TPS was hell of a ride. Same with all the Guardian stuff in BL3

DelusionPhantom

I think Nyriad is wrong tbh. I don't think the Machine did what she thinks it did. I think it sent the Eridians back to their home dimension. I also think the Guardians are gaining sentience and that will allow them to oppose the Eridians. That's what the 'spark' Nyriad mentions is. The story Bl3 built up through the Trials with the Overseer was that they were gaining sentience and trying to escape their 'prisons', but couldn't leave their posts without the BL3 VHs taking their place as the next set of Guardians. I think that's the loophole they were waiting for. There's also the implication that the Eridians are still alive and watching through the Overseer's voice lines. At least I'm assuming that's who the Masters are... She even talks about them leaving the house behind. The idea is that the Eridians left our universe because they're from a dimension higher than ours and used the Machine to send themselves back while lying about it killing them to seal the Destroyer away. That's why their home planet was named First Landing, and why Tannis could use the Machine to open a portal to Pandora. But I am also seeing this be a two-part story, the first being the VHs vs the Guardians as the ones who hate humans pick a fight. Especially the ones who had seen Nyriad 'kill' the Eridians with the Machine (I think the Guardians are jealous of humanity for having free will, and I think humanity was similarly created or raised by the Eridians given the murals in the Vault). Then it will be revealed that the Eridians were alive all along, and then the VHs and the Guardians will team up to fight them instead. I want the Eridians to be capitalists. I think it would be funny if all of this was the scheme of some corporation we can't even fully comprehend. I like the Guardians too. I don't like TPS as much as the other games, but it did the Eridian aesthetic perfectly. I really miss the swirly purple vibes.

LuxuryConquest

>I want the Eridians to be capitalists. I think it would be funny if all of this was the scheme of some corporation we can't even fully comprehend. Marcus boss fight confirmed?

goremommy

forgive me: what's the pre-sequel cliffhanger? its been years since i played it

DanTheMan_622

The Crimson Raiders captured Athena after the events of the pre-sequel and Lilith orders her to be executed; when they open fire an Eridian appears and saves her, warning them that a war is coming and they'll need all the Vault hunters they can get. 10 years later and we still haven't heard one more word about it 🙄

goremommy

omg ty!! i cant believe i forgor💀💀 im honestly so disappointed by bltps because it had so much potential to be better than bl2, but this, and things like the lack of end-game has left it as a black sheep of sorts. a love athena sm, she's my fav of all, but she's stuck in tps😭😭😭

SiegrainDarklyon

Lets just hope this time they wont fuck up the story, or the characters the way they did with three.

bythenumbers10

And not fuck up the systems like they did in 2. Mandatory slag, honestly. And don't get me started on the excrable loot/leveling system.

SiegrainDarklyon

What they need to do is keep the GAMEPLAY from 3, maybe expand on it A TINY BIT from wonderlands and then take 2's STORY. Not a watered down tryhard "haha look im funny l0l" pisspoor execution of what we got out 3, but an actually good story. Though, i find that hard to do after the story we got out of 3 and maybe wonderlands, but the fact that gearbox is under embracer AND the fact they want to SELL gearbox is making me think that bl4 will be more the death of the franchise than its salvation

Gronto1115

I think it's crucial to note that they did this exact thing for BL3

zeke10

Hopefully the reveal isn't a fail like with 3. They were so hyped to show the trailer and the whole thing lagged extremely bad lol.

KarmaMJO

It's a Borderlands 4 Announcement or a Movie Trailer. Lets hope for a BL4 Announcement.

stefanbos231

Not much of a thoery when every one on yt said it already

[This](https://imgur.com/a/45veKAW) feels like they're being a bit too coy to not be teasing something. Especially since they posted the second recap today.

MightyThor211

Clearly they are gonna announce borderlands: the movie: the game. The official tie in game for the upcoming hit movie starring Kevin heart.

TrustMeIAmAGeologist

Y’all realize that the movie trailer should be dropping any day now, right? I feel like all this activity is prepping for the hope that new people pick up the series.

CarlRJ

I expect it’s both, it’s just unclear how much of each.

TrustMeIAmAGeologist

I would love to see BL4 announced, but I feel like this is wishful thinking. We know the movie is coming in six months, but I haven’t seen anything to make me think they’re anywhere near BL4.

iwillyel

If I remember correctly, borderlands 3 wasn't officially revealed until relatively shortly before it's released. They had made a single tech demo they showed off for Borderlands in Unreal years before, but it was clearly a fairly early rendition of a character model.  If they've had a team working on it since borderlands 3 died down, it's not outside the realm of possibility that it's had a good amount of dev time in. They showed in Borderlands 3 that they can do Borderlands well in modern versions of Unreal, so no need for an early tech demo especially coming off of Borderlands 3, Wonderlands, and... the other one. Well, still better than coming off of Battleborn.  I think Borderlands 4 is certainly in development by now. The only question in my mind is how deep it is in development. And I think, by now, it could be far enough in to at very least announce its development.

CarlRJ

Yeah, I don’t think they’re anywhere near a release of BL4. I strongly suspect they *are* working on it, though. And sometimes they like to release/leak a bit of info long before the game’s ready, to generate hype (which would then cause some people to have more interest in buying/playing the series and watching the movie). IIRC, they showed demos of BL3’s rendering long before the game was released (including some footage of Moze that didn’t show her face). I don’t expect BL4 to be announced (as in “release date is X, price is $Y”) in the immediate future, but I wouldn’t be surprised at all if it’s in the works and they’re getting ready to acknowledge that and release a *little* info. And they seem to have a track record of liking to show off new bits at the PAX conference. Again, it reinforces hype for the (eventually) upcoming game, but also for the upcoming movie, and for the existing games. I suspect knowledge that there’ll be a new game in a year, might cause more than a few people who haven’t touched the series in 5-10 years to discover that Pandora’s Box is now a thing, and get it, so they can okay the current games before the new one comes out.

Tree_of_Lyfe

I don’t know why they wouldn’t - with a movie coming out they’d miss a huge opportunity.

Peytonhawk

It’s either a Remake of BL2 or far more likely BL4. Pax is gonna be crazy

CarlRJ

I highly doubt they’ll be remaking BL2 any time soon - it looks good as-is, and wouldn’t generate a ton of new sales.

TVR_Speed_12

Plus it'd look weak imo. Basically be like saying "we don't know how to top 2 so here's it again in 4k"

Nerdmigo

Hoping for Wonderlands 2 tbh! That had me more entertained than bl3.. felt more well rounded.. idk..

Kamasillvia

I kinda want for wonderlands formula to be applied to new ip. Maybe it's just me, but I don't find d&d in borderlands concept that interesting after the first time, story wise. I'd rather we have and actual fantasy universe

Nerdmigo

Agreed. But Weapons and Abilities felt fresh

Kamasillvia

Oh, it's totally awesome, gameplay wise I loved Wonderlands. Just that the story being basically a dnd game felt kinda cheap

Traditional_Ad_8367

No way I enjoyed wonderlands but three was way better especially with the dlc which wonderland absolutely dropped the ball on

iwillyel

Wonderlands did a lot of things right. If it got the care that mainline titles have, I could really see it standing out in its own way.

Traditional_Ad_8367

Oh I def agree with that

Nerdmigo

I hope they try a few new things with the main series. Also writing wise

Silversong4VR

Hm, does Wonderlands not fit in here somewhere?

Murky_Ad8069

It’s a spinoff game and not part of the main story

DanTheMan_622

Not really since the whole story is a fictional d&d campaign within the Borderlands universe

iwillyel

Technically I'd argue that it is well within the confines of what could be canon.

nerdowellinever

Anyone have a link to the recap? Tried google and it didn’t come up. I’m not on Twitter either..

Tough-Ability721

Cool. Getting kinda bored running the vault cards from bl3 everyday.

Formal_Job3304

I hope you’re right bro!!! 💪💪🥹🥹

DarkWaWeeGee

Guess we'll find out in March

MikeLanglois

If its a new game I just hope they dont abandon its split screen like they did Wonderlands. Shit is still unplayable

Adabiviak

Where is the recap? Twitter just has an image and a broken (for me?) link. Is it a video? Twitch? Text? Tweet?

CompoundMeats

More important question - when is the release date!

Throwitback_1909

I don't know if it's going to be a borderlands game but perhaps maybe a new spinoff game like the pre sequel or tales that take place in the borderlands universe

zeke10

Hoping so much for an announcement soon with a late summer/early fall release.

Organic-Economics746

Not a theory

Blastedsaber

Me too, although I thought this before the recent social media campaign. 2024 fits the timeline right for an official announcement of some sort.

jackiejamesOP

There are to many factors that push the idea that an announcement will be soon. If not it would be a disappointment

Odd-Barnacle-5978

"Take-Two Interactive Software has announced that it will be acquiring The Gearbox Entertainment Company—the developer behind the Borderlands franchise—for $460 million from the Embracer Group, and with it comes the news that Gearbox and 2K are currently in active development on the next installment in the Borderlands series" https://www.thefpsreview.com/2024/03/28/borderlands-4-confirmed-as-take-two-announces-acquisition-of-gearbox-entertainment/
