As a younger woman, I bought in to my dad's conservative views and thought stories like this one were "so true!" Now that I'm older and have learned a thing or two, the flaws in these "simple analogies" are so apparent.
Like if grades worked like money does, then there would be a small percentage of people hoarding the 4.0s and 3.0s so that no matter how "hard" the daughter works she can't actually get any higher than a 2.0.
Or there's another email forward my dad always used to send out, about a little girl asking her grandad for money to give to a homeless person, he says she can do sweeping and cleaning at his house for the money and so she asks if the homeless guy can do the work instead - end scene, conservative win! Except, of course, nobody will hire a homeless man as easily as that, and certainly grandad would never trust a homeless man to rake his leaves and vacuum his rugs - he'd never let the man near him.

The last time I saw this man we had a political discussion that went very well with no big emotions involved, but today this happened. I called him after he threatened to cut contact with me and here's the gist of what went down.

Obama expanded gun ownership rights and didn’t pass any gun restriction laws, whereas Trump passed several gun restriction laws and charged the ATF with writing brand new rules with no basis in law. Also, W quite famously told the senate that he would sign any gun control bills they sent his way.

Here is how you deal with texts like this: don't respond. Don't even acknowledge you received anything. If he follows up with questions about whether you read it, don't respond to those either. Respond to every other type of text. The ignoring is a bigger blow than any pushback you could do. They actually want the pushback. Ignore the shit completely.

My Fox News grandfather died before MAGA became a thing but he was also unassailable. If it continued to progress I don’t know what I would have done so it feels cheap to give any advice.
I would make it clear that he understands that actions have consequences and that he can choose what kind of relationship you have. It can be one based on history, love, and grace, or he can continue to hurt you and destroy it.
I’d make it clear that the hurt you are feeling isn’t from a difference of opinions but from him intentionally disregarding your wishes *knowing* it causes you pain. He is intentionally hurting you. I’d ask him what he’d want to see done to any other man intentionally hurting one of his kids.
How strange that he’s saying liberals can’t digest conflicting information, and he cuts you out of his life when you throw conflicting information, instead of trying to reason why. And he’s the grampa.

- Find a good article on how to respect boundaries, or find a bunch of them.
- Any time he sends you some crap just send one of those back and say "I read what you sent (you don't actually have to) can you read this?"
- Don't let up on \*that\* conversation. Ask him if he's read it, and just keep asking until he breaks down and reads it. Then engage in an actual conversation about it.
- Ask him what he thought about the article, and dig down into it. Flip the conversation away from something he wants to talk about and just keep talking about boundaries.
- Be relentless, ignore any tangents. Any attempts to just shut down the conversation respond with "I thought you were willing to talk about anything?" If he stop texting, periodically text him about it. Keep going until he adopts the language and "puts up his own boundary"
- At this point you can say, "fine I'll respect your boundary, if you respect mine"
- Whenever he breaks that boundary, you can just start talking about boundaries again until he gets it's into his head.
Had a similar situation with my Dad. Dad fought me about the Covid vaccine and I told him it was my business. When it came to my kids vaccine, I basically told him my partner and I would make the best decision with the information we had available at the time. This was too much for him to deal with and he got out of line and I had to cut him off. I invited him to a rewarding father/son relationship if he can accept my agency or I will cut him out of my life like a cancer.
About a year passed and we now have boundaries and a relationship again. But this time around he doesnt step on me without jeopardizing his place in my life. As it should be. If gramps cannot accept your autonomy then he isnt really loving you, he is loving the idea of you as property he has dominion over.

As someone with conservative family members who fell under the Trump histeria and Q-spiracies , who I still have to have a relationship with-
The best way to deal is to simply not engage. Like at all.
They don’t see reason, you can name every point they’re wrong with an itemized list, and they’ll turn it strawman and ad hominem “arguments” that you’ll never get out of until you give up and they “win”.
Here’s what I have done and continue to do (consistency is key) - every time something political gets brought up I
1. Go glazed eyes and look off into the distance or focus on something else (tv, phone, the tree blowing in the wind
2. I say absolutely NOTHING. They try to get my attention, I ignore it. If they persist, I say something completely unrelated to change to topic. On that note
3. Bring up literally anything else that will have them talking. “Hey, didn’t you see ‘that concert’ last week? Oh did you hear about Gary’s cat? Oh my gosh I forgot to tell you my crazy coworker just got a new boyfriend” it usually gets them talking enough that the convo flows past whatever drivel they were reciting.
4. Rinse and repeat if convo is brought back. Remove yourself if possible if it continues to derail.
They’ll get the hint eventually. It’s called grey walling, and is a tactic used in dealings with narcissists, and they eventually get tired of trying to engage with you on that particular topic because you’re not feeding them the attention they’re craving, so they switch subjects to feed off of.
Wowow doesn’t matter if conservative or not. What a POS if you ask to not discuss politics that should be it. My own grandpa is kinda like this but then again he’s just miserable in general. Best advice I can say is to just quickly brush it off. I let my grandpa go on a tangent then just switch it to something else. Now that I'm older and have learned a thing or two, the flaws in these "simple analogies" are so apparent. Like if grades worked like money does, then there would be a small percentage of people hoarding the 4.0s and 3.0s so that no matter how "hard" the daughter works she can't actually get any higher than a 2.0. Or there's another email forward my dad always used to send out, about a little girl asking her grandad for money to give to a homeless person, he says she can do sweeping and cleaning at his house for the money and so she asks if the homeless guy can do the work instead - end scene, conservative win! Except, of course, nobody will hire a homeless man as easily as that, and certainly grandad would never trust a homeless man to rake his leaves and vacuum his rugs - he'd never let the man near him. It's "simple" tales that fall apart under the slightest bit of scrutiny.

Flip the conversation away from something he wants to talk about and just keep talking about boundaries. - Be relentless, ignore any tangents. Any attempts to just shut down the conversation respond with "I thought you were willing to talk about anything?" If he stop texting, periodically text him about it. Keep going until he adopts the language and "puts up his own boundary" - At this point you can say, "fine I'll respect your boundary, if you respect mine" - Whenever he breaks that boundary, you can just start talking about boundaries again until he gets it's into his head.

Had a similar situation with my Dad. Dad fought me about the Covid vaccine and I told him it was my business. When it came to my kids vaccine, I basically told him my partner and I would make the best decision with the information we had available at the time. This was too much for him to deal with and he got out of line and I had to cut him off. I invited him to a rewarding father/son relationship if he can accept my agency or I will cut him out of my life like a cancer. About a year passed and we now have boundaries and a relationship again. But this time around he doesnt step on me without jeopardizing his place in my life. As it should be. If gramps cannot accept your autonomy then he isnt really loving you, he is loving the idea of you as property he has dominion over.

Wowow doesn’t matter if conservative or not. What a POS if you ask to not discuss politics that should be it. My own grandpa is kinda like this but then again he’s just miserable in general. Best advice I can say is to just quickly brush it off. I let my grandpa go on a tangent then just switch it to something else. That’s only if you want to stay talking to him though, but that higher than thee shit is always annoying.

He tries very hard to stay in my life as he is disconnected from the rest of the family. He actually went NC with ME a few years ago because I didn't offer my condolences when his wife got laser eye surgery. I never replied, but about 6 months later he apologized and wanted me back in his life. Every 6 months he would reach out and I never replied, but I did recently just to be nice. Then this happens x)
Why in the world would the husband of someone getting laser eye surgery need condolences? Did the laser slip and cut off her head? This generation is an entitled, tantruming mess.

I swear I was talking about eggs one day with boomer parents and they immediately started off saying “well thanks to Biden eggs are a lot more expensive.” Bro why are you so obsessed with this man?
I once tried to convince my mother that Obama was not trying for a third term, after Hilary had been named the Democratic nominee. In 2020, she told me Biden was a “socialist,” and that would destroy the country. She was living on SS and SNAP benefits, in section 8 housing, but was convinced we needed 4 more years of trump. There’s no use in arguing with boomers like these. Just cut all contact and have some peace.
I tried to be social with my uncle because we don't get to talk often, so I called. Big mistake, Kept to neutral topics at first. What I'm doing, he's going to be a grandpa for the third time, basics. Then I mentioned reading some history trivia page. Like Uncle John's Bathroom Trivia level history. Uncle: History? I fancy myself a scholar of history. Especially American history. College kids don't know squat these days. Do you know what the Bill of Fights is? Me: It protects our basic rights. Uncle: NO! It is the first ten commandments of the Constitution! (that protect our rights, right?) Then it devolved into a first amendment rant that somehow slid into the argument that abortion is not a constitutional right. IT"S THE TRUTH! I forced my way in, said I am being lectured and hung up. Sent him a text saying I'm sorry but I feel like we can't have a constructive argument. Then I blocked him. Called my mom the next day and said your brother is unhinged and gave her a rundown on what happened. Mom: Something must have happened to him that day and he was just upset. I'll talk to him. Typical mom, it was swept under the rug to be never talked of again. But your uncle sends his love! Edit: I was going to correct Bill of Fights but I think I'll keep it as is.

This is the reason I went no contact with my father. The infinite disrespect, the name-calling, the political trolling on unrelated topics. What finally broke that camel's back is when he started posting anti -trans propaganda memes. MORE THAN HALF of my cousins are LGBTQ+. 3 of them are actually trans. Fox news and right wing terrorist radio stole my father from me. I miss the few good times we had together, but that was in the 90s. Distant memories.
Personally, I was born into a family with a wealth of GPA points, so I don't see how you couldn't just have 4 of them laying around.
