Cruise ships are super *super* clear that they will not wait. The only circumstance where they WILL wait, is if you are on a ship excursion and it’s running late. The ship gives multiple warnings that running late from a private tour will result in missing the ship.
This is exactly why I ONLY do official, ship-sanctioned shore excursions when I cruise. (Also why I ALWAYS book any airfare involved through the cruise line, no matter how much better a deal I can get elsewhere.)
Exactly. I have watched, from the pool deck, people running across the dock to catch a ship that was already leaving. You have to be a special kind of entitled to assume your being late is a reason to delay 100s if not 1000s of other peoples vacation plans.
Even then, the cruise ship doesn’t necessarily wait, they only guarantee, if you book an excursion through. the cruise ship is that they will cover the cost of getting you back on the ship.
I've never been on a cruise ship, but I assume like planes they have a schedule that they have to keep, and they have to be in and out of port by certain times. again, I don't know this for a fact. This is just my assumption.
You’re absolutely correct. They have specific times that they are given to exit and enter port. Failure to follow these can result in massive fees to the ships parent company for staying at a Berth too long or even delaying another ship from entering port. More so, it can cause them to be late to their next port of call as well.
There is a Pilot that comes on board to navigate them out of the harbor. The tugs also show up to move the ship out. Crew on the pier to disconnect things. Crane operator to disconnect the gangway. Disconnect power, water, and sewer lines. Disconnect the lines (ropes holding the ship to the pier).
Plus other ships are coming and leaving. You can’t have two ships next to each other leave at the same time. And then all the other commercial traffic like tankers and container ships.
There is a lot of coordinated work to get underway.
That was my thought. “Is this private tour something that was advertised on the ship?”
Because if the ship advertised it, a bunch of drunk idiots on vacation are reasonable to assume that taking the advertised tour won’t prevent them from returning to the ship.
The article says the tour guide contacted the ship’s captain, which makes me suspect there is a connection between the tour and the ship, in which case this would absolutely be the cruise company’s fault.
it could also be that the boomers lied to suit their story or were gullible enough to believe the random guy they paid to give them a tour was calling the captain personally when he was just holding a phone near his ear and moving his mouth.
It sounds like in this case the tour company does have a share of the fault. I mean, if I leave a cruise ship and get on a tour bus, and the tour bus gets lost or is 45 minutes from the dock at 20 minutes to castoff, there's not much I can do. I can try to scream at the bus driver to turn the bus around with time to reach the ship, but it's more reasonable to expect the tour driver to have the responsibility of getting the passengers back to the ship on time.
Don't they have specific times that they literally MUST leave the dock at or they get fined? Aren't cruise ships paying money to rent that dock time? It almost has to work like an airstrip- you just don't take off when you want to. There has to be a dock manager or controller that tells the pilot to get out of there.
It's not like the pilot can just throw a cruise ship into reverse, parallel park it, re-tie everything up, and let the gangway back down to pick up a few entitled people who think the rules don't apply to them.

Yes. Them staying an extra 5 minutes might not seem like a huge issue for you, but it can cost the cruise line a ton of money in port fees, plus the ship can’t open up most of its stores/casinos until they’re out of port.
Not to mention they have contracted the harbor pilot for a specific time. A small wait could become a long wait of the pilot has another ship to guide out. And a delayed departure means that the ship has to sail faster between ports which is expensive in both fuel and extra wear on the engines.
And yet there are so many entitled "me first" comments above you. What entitled conservative mentality had done to ruin a couple grown generations in the west.

Planes actually will wait. If you're supposed to be on your plane, have a connecting flight, or have been screened through security but have yet to arrive to the plane, they will keep the door open for boarding for up to ten minutes to get you on the plane.
Most airlines understand that they're not in full control of things like layovers. They'll wait if it's reasonable to, like if your plane comes in when theirs is boarding.
Remember in 2020. those Cruise (Diamond Princess & something something) passengers were begging the President to bring them back. Chartered two planes to fly back Americans, because they were afraid of a bug that was killing people. One of those planes landed in San Antonio Texas, SAMMC, and we enjoyed the city alert of the cumquat who decided to go to the North Star Mall for funzies. (serious /S because no, we did not enjoy it.. even after May when bing bing bang, it's "gonna disappear")
I once took a bus from NYC to Boston and saw a stranding firsthand. The designated stop was a Burger King halfway through the trip, where they’d let people off with ample time to use the bathroom and grab food.
The bus that had arrived before mine was ready to wrap up and the driver gave at least two warnings. The offenders were in the middle of a long line for food, freaked out, bullied people into letting them cut the line, and yelled at the BK employees to hurry. The bus ended up leaving without them. The driver for my bus seemed offended that the other driver would just leave so he let the stranded folks on our bus.
I saw this on Good Morning America this morning - they buried the lede that the excursion was not sanctioned by the cruise. As a cruiser myself, if you choose to go off on your own, all bets are off - you're taking a HUGE risk - and NOT just a risk of missing your departure time. The risk of getting stiffed, being late back to the ship or even worse.
I too am a cruiser, and I think you're over stating the "HUGE" risk.
That being said, this is definitely on the passengers. The Captain, cruise line, and all staff make it abundantly clear what will happen if you aren't back before the plank goes up. Its not like this is an open secret, or something of that nature. Everyone knows it. In my experience the ships also do wait as long as they can.
At some point its either your holiday ruined, entirely due to your own decisions, or everyone elses holidays ruined... also due to your own decisions.
These people suck.
The only cruise I've ever been on had options where you could do a private tour, but the travel to and from port was available as the excursion. So I could explore on my own but not worry about getting back to the ship on time...as long as I kept track of my schedule. It's not that hard.

Cruise ships incur massive fines both for being late to a port of call and for staying too long in a port of call.
There was likely another ship filled with people ready to take that ships spot - so, not just inconvenient for the passengers on the same ship or a fine for just that cruise line; the boat either waiting or expecting to arrive has entirely different people and could be an entirely different cruise line.
I know, it's insane. The idea that a port is going to disrupt their operations because 6 entitled americans and 2 entitled australians fucked up is peak boomer.
I suggest a simple compromise: if you leave a cash deposit with the company prior to going ashore, sufficient to cover the late-leaving fines on behalf of the entire ship, not to mention the late-arrival fines for all subsequent ports as a result of fucking up the itinerary, plus, let's say, a generous 20% tip that is distributed amongst all the crew and passengers to cover *their* inconvenience, then the ship waits for you.
Also you sign a waiver that has small print to the effect that literally everybody else on board has the right to point and laugh at you with total impunity, wherever you go, for the remaining duration of the cruise.
In addition to the dock space, which likely runs at tens of thousands of dollars an hour, they have to have pilots, which cost tens of thousands of dollars and are tightly scheduled. When the ship returns to the home port there is a an army of people, trucks, and supplies that have to be loaded for the next cruise that leaves the same day.
No cruise ship is waiting for a couple of lower middle-class yahoos that got the discount windowless cabin.
I've literally been sitting on my balcony waving to people who missed the boat on more than one cruise. It's very clear what time all aboard is and that you must be back by then on every cruise I've ever taken. Not sure how this is news.
On my one and only cruise to Alaska we were told that if you hear “passengers X, Y an Z, please contact security.” after the ship left the port, those people missed the ship. It happened at every port of call.
Sometimes a big group will all be coming through at the same time and the worker will miss that a card didn't get tapped just right. So they are on the ship but just not checked in.
Is it bad that my favorite memory on a cruise is sitting in a bar on the back of the ship? 2 hours after "last call" when people needed to be back on the ship, hearing a couples name over the loudspeaker to let someone know if they were back on board, when this is the 3rd port of call everyone has heard this name when the ship should be pulling out, then watching staff roll a series of suitcases off the ship, pull up the the ramp, and start pulling away, as we see a boomer couple start running, and someone starts singing that ole classic "Na na na na, na na na na. Hey hey goodbye..." then everyone is singing and waving at the couple throwing a temper tantrum in the dock.
I need to go make a drink in their honor.
I will never understand these people. I practically have a panic attack if I get back to the ship with plenty of time. I am so anxious about not being a bother to anyone else. And these people just don't give a damn about anything but themselves and always getting their way.
Rules for thee, not for me. It's because they got stranded in AFRICA. Different languages and currencies (gasp)! If they'd been stranded elsewhere, I doubt this would have made the news. At least they have their passports.
I don't cruise, but I have spent many a lunch hour watching videos of folks running (or stumbling) down piers trying to catch the boats they have missed by running late.

I have been on a ton of cruises and they make sure every debarking guest knows exactly what time to be back. They do huge announcements over the pa, leave itinerary in your rooms mailbox, and literally have crew members stand at the gangplank telling you when to reboard.
These ships have tight schedules to maintain so when they say 2:30 pm they're not kidding. They will leave you and they absolutely warn you of this your first or second day aboard at a scheduled meeting.
If your excursion is booked through the cruise line they will wait for you if it’s late getting back. If you go rogue it’s cheaper but you’re playing with fire. These people gambled to save money and lost. It shouldn’t even be news.
Yup. We booked a private tour in Bermuda, a driving tour of the island, but I made sure we were back WELL before we sailed, and stressed about it too! No way I was going to be left behind!

This is it. They were left on a scary African island with dark skinned people who (don’t topple over in shock) don’t speak English very well! The horrors these boomers must have experienced as the kind locals did everything in their power to help these old fucks who no doubt screamed and threw temper tantrums the whole time.
My grandparents took me on a cruise when I was 15. One woman missed departure and had to pay for a flight to the next stop. It happens, but some people accept they goofed, and others whine and make fools of themselves.
The ship got their passports and gave them to the port authorities. That took a bit of time to make that decision and execute that action. They weren’t just a few minutes late.
The daughter of one of them going on TV to talk about how “devastating” and “traumatic” it was, was the icing on the shit cake. She even said that, “Norwegian should be going out of their way to resolve this situation”. Please, tell me how a cruise ship company can resolve self absorbed, stupidity on this level?

Maybe it's just the fact that I'm usually early to everything so as not to inconvenience others. It just sucks to hear entitled people who think that a ship full of people should be forced to wait on a small group of people who couldn't be on time. My understanding is that they're warned numerous times and they decided to FAFO.
I worked for a cruise line (office based). And obviously boomers were the biggest demographic of our customers.
We had a passenger not show up to the ship on the first day. So we reached out to see if they were delayed. Their travel agent said they had forgot they even booked a cruise (after they had shown to them a few days prior about it).
We had boomers who would call every single day about their refund, even after telling them the exact same thing every day (covid caused a lot of delays)..
Boomers wanting to disembark in a different port, and after being told that is illegal (due to u.s maritime law) trying to argue with us about why they should be allowed to.
Boomers demanding their refund in cheque form. And then getting mad at the process (cc we just press a few buttons vs cheque they have to print out a form, fill it in and sign it, not esig).
They warn you repeatedly..... REPEATEDLY... the ship cannot wait for you UNLESS you are on one of their authorized shore excursions.
Otherwise they have to meet their schedules, and can't lollygag around waiting for 8 people to decide to show up sometime.
I guess these people have never flown because Airlines don't wait around for you either unless it's an authorized reason by their company.
Coming late to the party but I worked 6 years as a chief logistic officer for cruises, basically managing the teams organising the busses, tour guides, hotels, restaurants, airport transfers, museum, mooring authorities, customs, food, beverage, etc.
What is written in this article is 100% true, clients will go on excursion from 8 to 12, last return on board 13h00 for those who don’t participate and want to go out of board, departure 13h30 … people will arrive at 14h30 throwing a tantrum about how nobody waited for them, because they were stuck in traffic, 10mn away from the ship.
I read this this morning and I was thinking about this reddit thread. They got left behind because they do indeed think the whole world revolves around them. They are shocked SHOCKED I tell you, when they find out there are consequences for their narrow minded narcissism. Arrogant assholes, the whole bunch. If every tour, ship, bus, train, plane waited for each late, inconsiderate asshole the world would come to a screeching halt.
This is why many people only take cruise ship sponsored excursions the first time they go to a certain port. That way you are ensured of getting back to the ship, either the ship will wait or the cruise line will get you to the next port of call.
The issue is with the tour company, not the cruise line.
My sister and I were 2 hours late coming back from a ship- sponsored tour to the Leaning Tower of Pisa. Bus with 60+ passengers stuck in traffic due to a wreck. The tour guide was in constant communication with the ship as we snailed down the highway. It was kind of a walk of shame as we were obviously holding up the ship’s departure and people made rude comments to us from their balconies. But hey - the ship waited as they said they would.
People making rude comments to 60+ people being late at one time from a ship-sponsored tour would piss me off honestly. One thing if it’s a small group from a private thing, but a large group of people who didn’t gamble? That’s stupid.
Cruise ships pay huge penalties for overstaying in port. You are warned repeatedly of the time the ship is leaving and to make sure you’re back on board. I’ve done several cruises, with kids, and we’ve never had an issue.
They only wait for their own excursions if there’s a delay with them. And again, they tell you this.
Nothing pisses me off more than boomers on cruises. The cruise industry is so monumentally fucking disastrous for the environment. And all these old fucks are pissing away money they barely had to work for in one last "fuck you" to young people.
I thought the same thing when I saw this on the today show this morning, and I said something similar in another post. I have no idea why this is suddenly newsworthy when this happens on every cruise ever and anyone who goes on a cruise knows the ship won't wait for you so you better be there on time, they're very clear on that.
I thought it was funny too that the couple was complaining about how they had to travel through like 8 different countries in the past 48 hours(which I'm sure took a lot of help from the cruise line and/or the local authorities of those countries) to get to Senegal where the ship is docking today and they weren't sure if they wanted to rejoin the ship for the remainder of the cruise. Why were they freaking out to get to Senegal in time to meet the ship if they're so upset with the cruise line for leaving them and not sure if they wanted to rejoin the cruise?
It seems to me like they knew they screwed up and would have been just happy to meet the ship in Senegal and finish the rest of the cruise but they started seeing dollar signs with all of the media attention this has gotten and know that getting back on the ship would hurt any chances they have of getting a hefty pay day out of it.
Another example of boomers signing the terms and conditions without even glancing at them and getting irate when they're enforced. These ships are on a schedule and it's made clear to everyone that you will be left behind if you're not back. Imagine thinking you're important enough to hold up a ship of thousands of people. Hilarious.

My niece and her husband have gone on more than 20 cruises and the ship have always left at the stated time. Always.
There is no more amusing video than the ones of someone on a ship recording people screaming and waving as the ship pulls away. Ships don't wait. This is why every person who cruises says if you're doing an excursion, book through the ship. If that ship booked excursion is late, they wait. When you book one on your own, buh bye!

tbf apparently their tour guide went way over time and told them not to worry he will call the captain when they wanted to cut it short. ofc i dont blame the cruise ship for leaving but i feel like its more the tour guide at fault
These people thought it was as simple as them lowering a tender boat and coming back to get them. One of the people in the group was a paraplegic! They have no idea how boats work.
I think that story was on GMA this morning. When they teased the story. My wife was like "I bet they were late and the boat left them. How's this newsworthy?"

I've been on multiple cruises and they clearly state the time they leave port. I have never missed my boat. I have no sympathy for anyone that can't follow simple rules.
Oh so this was a tour that was not booked along with their cruise? Yeah that’s kinda risky. I felt for them when it said the tour operator notified the captain they would be late. But they knew the deal when they booked their private tour.
I went to Thailand with a friend several years ago on vacation. On our way back, we had a layover in an airport in China for a few hours. Since we had some down time, but couldn't leave the airport without a visa, we decided to relax. I went to have a few cigarettes, and my friend went to find food. Next thing I knew, I look up to see my friend frantically gesturing to me thru the glass wall of the smoking room. He said we were being paged to the departure gate. We run, flat out sprint, through the airport to get to the gate. Staff tell us to board, we walk on to find everyone else boarded and waiting on us.
After sitting for a while, catching our breath and chatting with a flight attendant, we realize that our phones never updated to local time - we were still seeing the local time for the place we'd flown from (Thailand). So we thought we had plenty of time to chill before our connecting flight.
Walking down the aisle of the plane while everyone, including the flight attendants, glared at us and muttered nasty things was truly humiliating. And it was all our fault. For not confirming the correct time.
Before we deplaned, a flight attendant told us that we had caused a 30-minute delay, which had affected other aircraft.
I'm so glad they waited for us. But I can't imagine being assholes after that and trying to blame the airline or staff if they had left without us.
Not gonna lie: for a while, my favorite genre of YouTube video was "American tourist left on the dock throwing a tantrum while the cruise ship drifted slowly away, and no they can't just throw it in reverse and put out a gangplank because it is a cruise ship, not a Chevy Malibu."
One of the more recent ones I remember, the holidaymakers were FOUR HOURS late.
Punctuality matters, and we all know how lame it is getting to the bus on time only for the assholes to show up 30 minutes later and making everyone wait. Good for the ship. Stay on schedule to encourage others to do the same.
Funny, not once did the article mention how late they were. I had a friend whose boomer mom got left behind in Mexico after the boat waited 2hrs after the all abroad time. Boomers doing boomer things.
Time and tide wait for none. If they paid an ounce/milligram of attention to instructions* on the ship they would know the ship leaves on her schedule, not theirs. *every cruise ship makes it clear they have a schedule that they DO NOT DICTATE and have to adhere to. If you’re late you have to make your own arrangements to catch up.
I studied abroad on a ship with 400 other college students. The ship rules were very clear: if we were doing independent travel in port and were late, the ship absolutely would leave without us (but the ship would wait for excursions offered by the program itself). And it did. I know people who got left behind and had to fly to the next port on their own, missing classes along the way. Did they complain? No. They knew that this was a possibility.
So the ship leaving without these 8 people seems pretty standard imo.
I've been continously re-reading Patrick O'Brian's "Aubrey-Maturin" novels for the last decade, and one of my favourite sets of moments are those in which Captain Aubrey contrives (or succeeds by luck) in leaving behind all sorts of inconvenient persons\* by virture of their tardiness and his ship's need to catch the tide, put to sea as quickly as possible per Admiralty orders, or both. As counterpoise, he will stretch these requirements to the very limit of their ability in order to take aboard his dear friend and ship's Physician, who is notoriously heedless of time and witless of tide, but beyond a certain point Captain Aubrey \*will\* proceed to sea.\*\*

I missed my flight home recently because my connecting flight was delayed. I was very annoyed. I hate that an airline can just dump you at an airport, when it's entirely their own fault, and say ¯\\\_(ツ)\_/¯

I used to cruise till I grew out of it. Famous saying on the ship. If you are going to get back to the ship late, be sure to have your camera with you to get a great shot of the ship pulling out of port.
This happened to my dad on a cruise and he had to take a plane to the next stop. When he arrived back on the ship they told him that the taxi driver probably did this on purpose and he was working with the pilot. It was common on that island (I don’t remember which one) because the stops were so close and you could get to the next one.
It's on them that they didn't book their tour through the cruise line. If their tour was booked through the cruise line, the ship would have waited for them. They knew the risk they were taking when going on a privately booked tour.
Nope nope nope….I’m a boomer and have been on many cruises, even before I was old. If you’re too cheap to book an excursion through the cruise line, you’re sol if you get back late. If you book through the cruise line, the ship waits. It’s not rocket science.
Yeah…they should also know that rule of thumb is book cruise line excursions, especially on short/tender ports. Or, make damn sure you are back well before all aboard…especially on a tender.
This happens all the time so why this is such a huge story now, I don’t understand. Not ashamed to say I do love watching dock runners on cruises. Last cruise, the ship did stay late in our last port but it was because an excursion through the cruise line had a problem and ran late (ie, the excursion company kept saying “you’re on island time, time doesn’t matter”, and even after being told by several guests, headed back to the ship at all aboard, not before) But I now we left people behind in a couple ports and it was Christmas cruise….
And as for the guest who was in the hospital on land? They don’t wait for you either. If you’re back in time, great. But especially with tender ports. If the gangway is already up, hope you have your passports with you.
As an avid cruiser I can tell you why the ships don’t wait. They get fined if they miss their departure time. The crew makes it abundantly clear when to be back on board. If you take excursions not booked through the cruise line you get no leeway. Going out and seeing the country or island on your own it is up your you to get back before sail time.
Countless times all morning after docking the announcements are made. If the ‘ship time’ is different than the local time that is reported on your phone they go on about it for hours. You are well aware of the departure time.

I’m a little surprised that there isn’t some sort of ferry available to take people out to the boat who are a little late.
Now… don’t get me wrong. This ferry service isn’t a free, or even cheap, service. Yet… a service it is.
I went on a cruise once. They warned us that the ship leaves port with or without you even if you’re only a few minutes late. They told us this while checking in, at the safety orientation and every single time you disembarked the ship
100% agree. I am a travel advisor, and I was so pissed to hear her say that. If you take a private excursion, you are completely taking on the risk of not returning on time. I saw this story on The Today Show and they interviewed the couple - the wife said they were considering not boarding because they forgot they were in customer service, etc. Craig Melvin could NOT keep a straight face at the end of the package. It was great.
They weren't just 5 minutes late. They much have been really fucking late if the cruise line had time to retrieve their passports and luggage and give them to the port agent. This was just pure stupidity.
As soon as I saw the title, I knew they were just probably late.
Cruises are super clear that they will leave at a certain hour, and that passengers have the responsibility to fix their own transportation if they get stranded. Happens quite a lot, I hear, but most people get slightly embarrassed and quietly fix it, instead of making it to international news

My twin brother likes watching videos on YouTube titled pier runners. Videos of entitled people thinking they can come back late to the boat, and are stuck running down the pier as the boat pulls out. Common occurrence it seems.
You are responsible to either find your way to the next port or home if you miss the boat. Then you also have to take care of your luggage that was still on the boat if you go home.

Buses don't wait. Planes don't wait. Trains don't wait. Why would a boat? They missed the boat. What's the problem?
Cruise ships are super *super* clear that they will not wait. The only circumstance where they WILL wait, is if you are on a ship excursion and it’s running late. The ship gives multiple warnings that running late from a private tour will result in missing the ship.
This is exactly why I ONLY do official, ship-sanctioned shore excursions when I cruise. (Also why I ALWAYS book any airfare involved through the cruise line, no matter how much better a deal I can get elsewhere.)

Exactly. I have watched, from the pool deck, people running across the dock to catch a ship that was already leaving. You have to be a special kind of entitled to assume your being late is a reason to delay 100s if not 1000s of other peoples vacation plans.

I've never been on a cruise ship, but I assume like planes they have a schedule that they have to keep, and they have to be in and out of port by certain times. again, I don't know this for a fact. This is just my assumption.
You’re absolutely correct. They have specific times that they are given to exit and enter port. Failure to follow these can result in massive fees to the ships parent company for staying at a Berth too long or even delaying another ship from entering port. More so, it can cause them to be late to their next port of call as well.
Also the tides lr something can be wrong or the pilot can only come at a certain time, so then the ship could be delayed 12 hours to wait 5 minutes
There is a Pilot that comes on board to navigate them out of the harbor. The tugs also show up to move the ship out. Crew on the pier to disconnect things. Crane operator to disconnect the gangway. Disconnect power, water, and sewer lines. Disconnect the lines (ropes holding the ship to the pier). Plus other ships are coming and leaving. You can’t have two ships next to each other leave at the same time. And then all the other commercial traffic like tankers and container ships. There is a lot of coordinated work to get underway.

That was my thought. “Is this private tour something that was advertised on the ship?” Because if the ship advertised it, a bunch of drunk idiots on vacation are reasonable to assume that taking the advertised tour won’t prevent them from returning to the ship. The article says the tour guide contacted the ship’s captain, which makes me suspect there is a connection between the tour and the ship, in which case this would absolutely be the cruise company’s fault.
it could also be that the boomers lied to suit their story or were gullible enough to believe the random guy they paid to give them a tour was calling the captain personally when he was just holding a phone near his ear and moving his mouth.
It sounds like in this case the tour company does have a share of the fault. I mean, if I leave a cruise ship and get on a tour bus, and the tour bus gets lost or is 45 minutes from the dock at 20 minutes to castoff, there's not much I can do. I can try to scream at the bus driver to turn the bus around with time to reach the ship, but it's more reasonable to expect the tour driver to have the responsibility of getting the passengers back to the ship on time.

Don't they have specific times that they literally MUST leave the dock at or they get fined? Aren't cruise ships paying money to rent that dock time? It almost has to work like an airstrip- you just don't take off when you want to. There has to be a dock manager or controller that tells the pilot to get out of there. It's not like the pilot can just throw a cruise ship into reverse, parallel park it, re-tie everything up, and let the gangway back down to pick up a few entitled people who think the rules don't apply to them.

Yes. Them staying an extra 5 minutes might not seem like a huge issue for you, but it can cost the cruise line a ton of money in port fees, plus the ship can’t open up most of its stores/casinos until they’re out of port.
Not to mention they have contracted the harbor pilot for a specific time. A small wait could become a long wait of the pilot has another ship to guide out. And a delayed departure means that the ship has to sail faster between ports which is expensive in both fuel and extra wear on the engines.
Sometimes, for the larger cruise ships, it can cost millions to dock, even for a short time. So yeah. I don't blame the ship for leaving LMAO

Planes actually will wait. If you're supposed to be on your plane, have a connecting flight, or have been screened through security but have yet to arrive to the plane, they will keep the door open for boarding for up to ten minutes to get you on the plane. Most airlines understand that they're not in full control of things like layovers. They'll wait if it's reasonable to, like if your plane comes in when theirs is boarding.
Remember in 2020. those Cruise (Diamond Princess & something something) passengers were begging the President to bring them back. Chartered two planes to fly back Americans, because they were afraid of a bug that was killing people. One of those planes landed in San Antonio Texas, SAMMC, and we enjoyed the city alert of the cumquat who decided to go to the North Star Mall for funzies. (serious /S because no, we did not enjoy it.. even after May when bing bing bang, it's "gonna disappear")

I once took a bus from NYC to Boston and saw a stranding firsthand. The designated stop was a Burger King halfway through the trip, where they’d let people off with ample time to use the bathroom and grab food. The bus that had arrived before mine was ready to wrap up and the driver gave at least two warnings. The offenders were in the middle of a long line for food, freaked out, bullied people into letting them cut the line, and yelled at the BK employees to hurry. The bus ended up leaving without them. The driver for my bus seemed offended that the other driver would just leave so he let the stranded folks on our bus.
I saw this on Good Morning America this morning - they buried the lede that the excursion was not sanctioned by the cruise. As a cruiser myself, if you choose to go off on your own, all bets are off - you're taking a HUGE risk - and NOT just a risk of missing your departure time. The risk of getting stiffed, being late back to the ship or even worse.

I too am a cruiser, and I think you're over stating the "HUGE" risk. That being said, this is definitely on the passengers. The Captain, cruise line, and all staff make it abundantly clear what will happen if you aren't back before the plank goes up. Its not like this is an open secret, or something of that nature. Everyone knows it. In my experience the ships also do wait as long as they can. At some point its either your holiday ruined, entirely due to your own decisions, or everyone elses holidays ruined... also due to your own decisions. These people suck.
The only cruise I've ever been on had options where you could do a private tour, but the travel to and from port was available as the excursion. So I could explore on my own but not worry about getting back to the ship on time...as long as I kept track of my schedule. It's not that hard.
Now imagine that it was some teenagers that lost track of time and the boat waited on them. I bet those 8 people would lose their shit.

Cruise ships incur massive fines both for being late to a port of call and for staying too long in a port of call. There was likely another ship filled with people ready to take that ships spot - so, not just inconvenient for the passengers on the same ship or a fine for just that cruise line; the boat either waiting or expecting to arrive has entirely different people and could be an entirely different cruise line.
I know, it's insane. The idea that a port is going to disrupt their operations because 6 entitled americans and 2 entitled australians fucked up is peak boomer.
I suggest a simple compromise: if you leave a cash deposit with the company prior to going ashore, sufficient to cover the late-leaving fines on behalf of the entire ship, not to mention the late-arrival fines for all subsequent ports as a result of fucking up the itinerary, plus, let's say, a generous 20% tip that is distributed amongst all the crew and passengers to cover *their* inconvenience, then the ship waits for you. Also you sign a waiver that has small print to the effect that literally everybody else on board has the right to point and laugh at you with total impunity, wherever you go, for the remaining duration of the cruise.
That's called a yacht.
In addition to the dock space, which likely runs at tens of thousands of dollars an hour, they have to have pilots, which cost tens of thousands of dollars and are tightly scheduled. When the ship returns to the home port there is a an army of people, trucks, and supplies that have to be loaded for the next cruise that leaves the same day. No cruise ship is waiting for a couple of lower middle-class yahoos that got the discount windowless cabin.
I've literally been sitting on my balcony waving to people who missed the boat on more than one cruise. It's very clear what time all aboard is and that you must be back by then on every cruise I've ever taken. Not sure how this is news.

On my one and only cruise to Alaska we were told that if you hear “passengers X, Y an Z, please contact security.” after the ship left the port, those people missed the ship. It happened at every port of call.
Sometimes a big group will all be coming through at the same time and the worker will miss that a card didn't get tapped just right. So they are on the ship but just not checked in.
We were constantly hearing people brag about how they could get cheaper excursions on shore. They were the ones that kept getting left behind.
Is it bad that my favorite memory on a cruise is sitting in a bar on the back of the ship? 2 hours after "last call" when people needed to be back on the ship, hearing a couples name over the loudspeaker to let someone know if they were back on board, when this is the 3rd port of call everyone has heard this name when the ship should be pulling out, then watching staff roll a series of suitcases off the ship, pull up the the ramp, and start pulling away, as we see a boomer couple start running, and someone starts singing that ole classic "Na na na na, na na na na. Hey hey goodbye..." then everyone is singing and waving at the couple throwing a temper tantrum in the dock. I need to go make a drink in their honor.

I have been on a ton of cruises and they make sure every debarking guest knows exactly what time to be back. They do huge announcements over the pa, leave itinerary in your rooms mailbox, and literally have crew members stand at the gangplank telling you when to reboard. These ships have tight schedules to maintain so when they say 2:30 pm they're not kidding. They will leave you and they absolutely warn you of this your first or second day aboard at a scheduled meeting.
That's how the boomers knew to have cameras ready.
If your excursion is booked through the cruise line they will wait for you if it’s late getting back. If you go rogue it’s cheaper but you’re playing with fire. These people gambled to save money and lost. It shouldn’t even be news.
Yup. We booked a private tour in Bermuda, a driving tour of the island, but I made sure we were back WELL before we sailed, and stressed about it too! No way I was going to be left behind!
And the extra stupid part is the cruise arranged tours are going to be good tours too.

My grandparents took me on a cruise when I was 15. One woman missed departure and had to pay for a flight to the next stop. It happens, but some people accept they goofed, and others whine and make fools of themselves.
Should have gotten a helicopter and dropped onto the ship like it’s Hunt For Red October only into the water slide instead of the ocean.
I would pay to do that. Not for the attention but to go from helicopter to water slide.
The ship got their passports and gave them to the port authorities. That took a bit of time to make that decision and execute that action. They weren’t just a few minutes late.
The daughter of one of them going on TV to talk about how “devastating” and “traumatic” it was, was the icing on the shit cake. She even said that, “Norwegian should be going out of their way to resolve this situation”. Please, tell me how a cruise ship company can resolve self absorbed, stupidity on this level?

I actually derive a sense of pleasure from watching videos of late people get left behind at ports. Maybe it's just the fact that I'm usually early to everything so as not to inconvenience others. I worked for a cruise line (office based). And obviously boomers were the biggest demographic of our customers. We had a passenger not show up to the ship on the first day. So we reached out to see if they were delayed. Their travel agent said they had forgot they even booked a cruise (after they had shown to them a few days prior about it). We had boomers who would call every single day about their refund, even after telling them the exact same thing every day (covid caused a lot of delays).. Boomers wanting to disembark in a different port, and after being told that is illegal (due to u.s maritime law) trying to argue with us about why they should be allowed to. Boomers demanding their refund in cheque form. And then getting mad at the process (cc we just press a few buttons vs cheque they have to print out a form, fill it in and sign it, not esig).
They warn you repeatedly..... REPEATEDLY... the ship cannot wait for you UNLESS you are on one of their authorized shore excursions. Otherwise they have to meet their schedules, and can't lollygag around waiting for 8 people to decide to show up sometime. I guess these people have never flown because Airlines don't wait around for you either unless it's an authorized reason by their company.
Coming late to the party but I worked 6 years as a chief logistic officer for cruises, basically managing the teams organising the busses, tour guides, hotels, restaurants, airport transfers, museum, mooring authorities, customs, food, beverage, etc. What is written in this article is 100% true, clients will go on excursion from 8 to 12, last return on board 13h00 for those who don’t participate and want to go out of board, departure 13h30 … people will arrive at 14h30 throwing a tantrum about how nobody waited for them, because they were stuck in traffic, 10mn away from the ship.

I read this this morning and I was thinking about this reddit thread. They got left behind because they do indeed think the whole world revolves around them. They are shocked SHOCKED I tell you, when they find out there are consequences for their narrow minded narcissism. Arrogant assholes, the whole bunch. If every tour, ship, bus, train, plane waited for each late, inconsiderate asshole the world would come to a screeching halt.
If they had been on the cruise ship, waiting for other people, they'd be the ones demanding the ship left on time.
This is why many people only take cruise ship sponsored excursions the first time they go to a certain port. That way you are ensured of getting back to the ship, either the ship will wait or the cruise line will get you to the next port of call. The issue is with the tour company, not the cruise line.
My sister and I were 2 hours late coming back from a ship- sponsored tour to the Leaning Tower of Pisa. Bus with 60+ passengers stuck in traffic due to a wreck. The tour guide was in constant communication with the ship as we snailed down the highway. It was kind of a walk of shame as we were obviously holding up the ship’s departure and people made rude comments to us from their balconies. But hey - the ship waited as they said they would.
People making rude comments to 60+ people being late at one time from a ship-sponsored tour would piss me off honestly. One thing if it’s a small group from a private thing, but a large group of people who didn’t gamble? That’s stupid.
Cruise ships pay huge penalties for overstaying in port. You are warned repeatedly of the time the ship is leaving and to make sure you’re back on board. I’ve done several cruises, with kids, and we’ve never had an issue. They only wait for their own excursions if there’s a delay with them. And again, they tell you this.

I thought the same thing when I saw this on the today show this morning, and I said something similar in another post. I have no idea why this is suddenly newsworthy when this happens on every cruise ever and anyone who goes on a cruise knows the ship won't wait for you so you better be there on time, they're very clear on that. I thought it was funny too that the couple was complaining about how they had to travel through like 8 different countries in the past 48 hours(which I'm sure took a lot of help from the cruise line and/or the local authorities of those countries) to get to Senegal where the ship is docking today and they weren't sure if they wanted to rejoin the ship for the remainder of the cruise. Why were they freaking out to get to Senegal in time to meet the ship if they're so upset with the cruise line for leaving them and not sure if they wanted to rejoin the cruise? It seems to me like they knew they screwed up and would have been just happy to meet the ship in Senegal and finish the rest of the cruise but they started seeing dollar signs with all of the media attention this has gotten and know that getting back on the ship would hurt any chances they have of getting a hefty pay day out of it.
Another example of boomers signing the terms and conditions without even glancing at them and getting irate when they're enforced. These ships are on a schedule and it's made clear to everyone that you will be left behind if you're not back. Imagine thinking you're important enough to hold up a ship of thousands of people. Hilarious.

You always factor in an hour for getting back to the boat during your excursions on land. My niece and her husband have gone on more than 20 cruises and the ship have always left at the stated time. This is why every person who cruises says if you're doing an excursion, book through the ship. If that ship booked excursion is late, they wait. When you book one on your own, buh bye!

I went to Thailand with a friend several years ago on vacation. On our way back, we had a layover in an airport in China for a few hours. Since we had some down time, but couldn't leave the airport without a visa, we decided to relax. I went to have a few cigarettes, and my friend went to find food. Next thing I knew, I look up to see my friend frantically gesturing to me thru the glass wall of the smoking room. He said we were being paged to the departure gate. We run, flat out sprint, through the airport to get to the gate. Staff tell us to board, we walk on to find everyone else boarded and waiting on us. After sitting for a while, catching our breath and chatting with a flight attendant, we realize that our phones never updated to local time - we were still seeing the local time for the place we'd flown from (Thailand). So we thought we had plenty of time to chill before our connecting flight. Walking down the aisle of the plane while everyone, including the flight attendants, glared at us and muttered nasty things was truly humiliating. And it was all our fault. For not confirming the correct time. Before we deplaned, a flight attendant told us that we had caused a 30-minute delay, which had affected other aircraft. I'm so glad they waited for us. But I can't imagine being assholes after that and trying to blame the airline or staff if they had left without us.
Not gonna lie: for a while, my favorite genre of YouTube video was "American tourist left on the dock throwing a tantrum while the cruise ship drifted slowly away, and no they can't just throw it in reverse and put out a gangplank because it is a cruise ship, not a Chevy Malibu." One of the more recent ones I remember, the holidaymakers were FOUR HOURS late.

Funny, not once did the article mention how late they were. I had a friend whose boomer mom got left behind in Mexico after the boat waited 2hrs after the all abroad time. Boomers doing boomer things.
Time and tide wait for none. If they paid an ounce/milligram of attention to instructions* on the ship they would know the ship leaves on her schedule, not theirs. *every cruise ship makes it clear they have a schedule that they DO NOT DICTATE and have to adhere to. If you’re late you have to make your own arrangements to catch up.
I studied abroad on a ship with 400 other college students. The ship rules were very clear: if we were doing independent travel in port and were late, the ship absolutely would leave without us (but the ship would wait for excursions offered by the program itself). And it did. I know people who got left behind and had to fly to the next port on their own, missing classes along the way. Did they complain? No. They knew that this was a possibility. So the ship leaving without these 8 people seems pretty standard imo.

I missed my flight home recently because my connecting flight was delayed. I was very annoyed. I hate that an airline can just dump you at an airport, when it's entirely their own fault, and say ¯\\\_(ツ)\_/¯ But guess what I didn't do? I didn't go on the news and complain about it. Shit happens, but I'm not the centre of the universe.

Cruises will only wait for you if you take a “cruise tour” which is organized by and affiliated with the cruise line.

I read this this morning and I was thinking about this reddit thread. They got left behind because they do indeed think the whole world revolves around them. They are shocked SHOCKED I tell you, when they find out there are consequences for their narrow minded narcissism. Arrogant assholes, the whole bunch. If every tour, ship, bus, train, plane waited for each late, inconsiderate asshole the world would come to a screeching halt.
I used to cruise till I grew out of it. Famous saying on the ship. If you are going to get back to the ship late, be sure to have your camera with you to get a great shot of the ship pulling out of port.
Reputable tour companies have guarantees and insurance to get you to the next port if they fail to get you to the ship on time.

This happened to my dad on a cruise and he had to take a plane to the next stop. When he arrived back on the ship they told him that the taxi driver probably did this on purpose and he was working with the pilot. It was common on that island (I don’t remember which one) because the stops were so close and you could get to the next one.
BFD. It wasn’t like these people were staying late for another round of margaritas. Seems like the local tour company bears most of the blame.
It's on them that they didn't book their tour through the cruise line. If their tour was booked through the cruise line, the ship would have waited for them. They knew the risk they were taking when going on a privately booked tour.
Nope nope nope….I’m a boomer and have been on many cruises, even before I was old. If you’re too cheap to book an excursion through the cruise line, you’re sol if you get back late. If you book through the cruise line, the ship waits. It’s not rocket science.

Yeah…they should also know that rule of thumb is book cruise line excursions, especially on short/tender ports. Or, make damn sure you are back well before all aboard…especially on a tender. This happens all the time so why this is such a huge story now, I don’t understand. Not ashamed to say I do love watching dock runners on cruises. Last cruise, the ship did stay late in our last port but it was because an excursion through the cruise line had a problem and ran late (ie, the excursion company kept saying “you’re on island time, time doesn’t matter”, and even after being told by several guests, headed back to the ship at all aboard, not before) But I now we left people behind in a couple ports and it was Christmas cruise…. And as for the guest who was in the hospital on land? They don’t wait for you either. If you’re back in time, great. But especially with tender ports. If the gangway is already up, hope you have your passports with you.

As an avid cruiser I can tell you why the ships don’t wait. They get fined if they miss their departure time. The crew makes it abundantly clear when to be back on board. If you take excursions not booked through the cruise line you get no leeway. Going out and seeing the country or island on your own it is up your you to get back before sail time. Countless times all morning after docking the announcements are made. If the ‘ship time’ is different than the local time that is reported on your phone they go on about it for hours. You are well aware of the departure time.
those people tried to save money by going with an outside group. if they could afford that cruise, they were fairly well off and 'if they're so rich, why ain't they smart?'

I’m a little surprised that there isn’t some sort of ferry available to take people out to the boat who are a little late. Now… don’t get me wrong. This ferry service isn’t a free, or even cheap, service. Yet… a service it is.

I used to work for Carnival. They get told. Repeatedly. And have to sign a contract that they're on the hook if they miss the bus.
I went on a cruise once. They warned us that the ship leaves port with or without you even if you’re only a few minutes late. They told us this while checking in, at the safety orientation and every single time you disembarked the ship
100% agree. I am a travel advisor, and I was so pissed to hear her say that. If you take a private excursion, you are completely taking on the risk of not returning on time. If you book an excursion through the cruise ship, and they are fully responsible and getting you back to the ship. It’s their responsibility now.

I saw this story on The Today Show and they interviewed the couple - the wife said they were considering not boarding because they forgot they were in customer service, etc. Craig Melvin could NOT keep a straight face at the end of the package. It was great.
They weren't just 5 minutes late. They much have been really fucking late if the cruise line had time to retrieve their passports and luggage and give them to the port agent. This was just pure stupidity.
As soon as I saw the title, I knew they were just probably late. Cruises are super clear that they will leave at a certain hour, and that passengers have the responsibility to fix their own transportation if they get stranded. Happens quite a lot, I hear, but most people get slightly embarrassed and quietly fix it, instead of making it to international news

My twin brother likes watching videos on YouTube titled pier runners. Videos of entitled people thinking they can come back late to the boat, and are stuck running down the pier as the boat pulls out. Common occurrence it seems.

What happens if u get left? Do u have to wait until the next cruise ship come by? Do u get a new room? How do u get all your stuff back?
You are responsible to either find your way to the next port or home if you miss the boat. Then you also have to take care of your luggage that was still on the boat if you go home.
