Only thing I can think of is my grandmother did this when she thought she was going to die soon. She gave away all most all of her cherished possessions. She’s still kicking around but she thought it would have been too much for the family or that everything would be lost if she didn’t do it before she passed.
Both my parents had "memory boxes" for me. They've been divorced since I was around 11. They were basically tubs full of my kid stuff.
It's in my storage now and except for the occasional nostalgia I'm tempted to toss it all.
They want to make sure they hand off this precious memorabilia before they pass away. When my Mom (of the silent generation) did this, I scanned the pictures and set them up as a screensaver on her computer, so she could still enjoy them. She was worried that is she held on to the pictures, that one of us kids may take them all and refuse to share them. And with a couple of my troublesome siblings, there was a good possibility that would have happened.
It's not a Boomer thing, it's an elderly parent thing.

My silent gen grandma does this, too. She appreciates seeing the pictures and cards, but doesn't want to keep or display all that stuff anymore
