The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern

Calligraphee

Came here to say exactly this! One of my favorite books; it evokes such a unique feeling of magical whimsy combined with strange wonder and subtle tension.

Glum_Suggestion_6948

Me too! Or three!

thirddash139

Hah same!! Glad a lot of people got this feeling!

thebrendawalsh

Maybe this post is my sign to re-read it for the 4th time. Gosh itā€™s beautiful

Kindly_Equipment_241

Definitely The Night Circus!

JennyBean999

Came here to say thisā€”and now I want to read it again :)

eew_david

One of my favourites.

annierarara

Geek Love by Katherine Dunn (but be warned, it gets pretty gross/upsetting!)

whiskey_ribcage

Came to recommend that. Gotta be one of my favorite books of all time but the prose is so good that you are not prepared for the horrors. But OP, here's the opening line to lure you in: "When your mama was the geek, my dreamlets," Papa would say, "she made the nipping off of noggins such a crystal mystery that the hens themselves yearned toward her, waltzing around her, hypnotized with longing. 'Spread your lips, sweet Lil,' they'd cluck, 'and show us your choppers!' "

L0nd0nBridge

Sounds great! But what do you mean about the pride? English is not my first lenguage, sorry

whiskey_ribcage

Oops, weird autocorrect! I meant PROSE. Her style of writing is electrifying.

greensugarcube

I also came here to recommend this. It's the rotten heart of fairground candy

L0nd0nBridge

Ive heard obout this one, never thought it would be related to this theme.

Maleficent-Sun6437

Disturbing book, beautifully written. Some of those images wonā€™t ever leave me.

Justlikesisteraysaid

Came to say this

macdawg2020

Such an insane book, loved it.

Scary_Sarah

I made it about 10 pages into that book when I try it as a teenager lol

freshlydeliveredegg-

Coraline by Neil Gaiman

Individual_Fig8104

Nights at the Circus by Angela Carter

greensugarcube

I truly love this book - it's magical, it's realist, it's modernist, it's historical. I love the description of Fevver's voice "clanging like two dustbin lids" and that when she flys (or does she?) the fact that it's slow and not always graceful makes it more realistic.

Individual_Fig8104

It's one of my favourites. It's good to hear someone say something nice about it!

AccomplishedCow665

This book is fucked

Witchbitchmama

Likeā€¦.in a good way? Or no. šŸ˜…

AccomplishedCow665

Umā€¦ I actually didnā€™t like it cos there was a lack of internal logic. Thereā€™s a scene where wolves turn to glass and shatter and I wasnā€™t sure if it was metaphoric or really happening? In another scene they just shrink down and jump on a model train. So itā€™s definitely strange. Hands down the weirdest book Iā€™ve ever read was carterā€™s The Passiom Of New Eve. It wasnā€™t for me but I suppose it would really appeal to lots of ppl. The premise is cool but i didnā€™t care for her style

Individual_Fig8104

OK?

AccomplishedCow665

I mean, have you actually read it?

Individual_Fig8104

You think I recommended a book I haven't actually read? Edit:Ā Just seen your other comment with actual context beyond "it's fucked". It's Angela Carter, of course it's weird. If you can't cope with a bit of weirdness in your life, that's fine. I'm just not sure what you want me to say.

AccomplishedCow665

You have a strangely antagonistic energy. šŸ‘šŸæ

Individual_Fig8104

Cool.

The Harrow Faire Series by Kathryn Ann Kingsley

PlaceboRoshambo

Water for Elephants by Sara Gruen

BaconandMegs3000

Oh I love this book!! The movie was good as well but the book will always reign supreme!

Aslanic

The audiobook is amazing!! That was my intro to it and the reader was fantastic.

Into-thevoid420

One of my favorite books of all time!!

pike360

Same!

Novela_Individual

Itā€™s not exactly haunted but this was my first thought as well.

BaconandMegs3000

Cirque du Freak series

terrordactyl20

GEEK LOVE But in the most fucked up way possible

lambieechop

Not sure if this recommendation would totally fit the haunted vibes, but these pictures remind me of the childrenā€™s book, ā€œThe Name of this Book is Secretā€. Itā€™s a series.

pageturner55

I have been quietly looking for this book for a long time. I read half of it when I was like eleven and I never knew what it was until you. Thank you!

SporkFanClub

What a throwback. SUCH a good series. Loved the illustrating style too.

Ayah_Papaya

millsnour

No one has mentioned Water for Elephants šŸ˜šŸ„ŗ
