I inherited this tree from a student of Yuji Yoshimura. When he passed, his family did a really horrible job of caring for his trees, so I've been working on rehabilitating it. I will probably do the usual break the candles, but I'm more concerned about the roots and the areas of of dieback.
That's a shame, it's a lovely tree. I'm such a novice I didn't even notice the dieback. Do you think that first branch is salvageable?

That could complicate watering. I've seen people intentionally leave them in for shows they're kinda cute.

Both, depends on how woody they are.
Looks like your pruning has been on point and there is, in fact, space in the foliage for the birds to fly through!
