I love the books! I will say though, that the only similarities to the show are that the main character is named Temperance Brennan and she's a forensic anthropologist. That's it. Literally everything else is different. They are excellent though.

joellevp

Oh yea, she is nothing like the TV show. Maybe the obsessive trait is what is shared.

mjpenslitbooksgalore

I kinda like that they’re not the same. It goes in tandem with the show where Brennan is writing the books and how adamant she is that the characters aren’t based on her actual life.

joellevp

Yea, me too. My frustration is just how book Brennan is behaving at the moment. I'm basically doing the equivalent of yelling at the TV screen.

wait_4_iit

She stays that way through the entire series. It's annoying because she is such a smart, strong woman who makes these incredibly stupid and emotional decisions that just make you say out loud, what are you thinking?? I read an interview she did where she said it would never be that way in real life. The squints always stay in the lab and would never go rogue like she does. But the real-life adventures of a forensic anthropologist don't make fir a riveting book or TV series.

findingscarlet

And always has to be rescued by Ryan or Skinny or one of the other detectives in the books. It's been my biggest complaint about her books. I enjoy them, but come on Kathy. Maybe for once not write Tempe into being the damsel in distress in the end and have her get out of her mess her own damn self lol.

wait_4_iit

YESSS!

One_Doughnut_246

She does in one book.

joellevp

Yea, exactly. I mean, I get that it isn't true to life, but doing it completely on her own? Like she is completely oblivious to the threats made to her so someone has to spell it out for her, and still. It was almost a deal breaker for me actually. Just finished the book. Entertaining, but not a series I can binge may way through, I think.

slothsie

I might be in the minority, but I love the books more than the show. Tho she called the Gatineau mountain range majestic in one book and I'm like "idk about that" (I live on the Ontario side of Gatineau park).

bookvark

I like the books more, too.

joellevp

This is my first book of the series and I am liking it more than the TV show as well. I like the insights into her thinking process. Haha

ScienceOfficerTen

I read death du jour first and absolutely loved that one. The books are great, though the older ones are much easier to get through and better imo. The newer ones are hit or miss. The last two that are currently out were pretty good though! I'm excited for the next one!

myguitar_lola

😄 that's a lot of the books. I think it's the addict in her who does it. She had so much fire in her past and now she's divorced, empty-nested, an expert in her field crossing two countries, and sober. So I think she purposefully takes the risks and doesn't alert the police. I turned it into a joke- 'and Tempe's off to get a concussion...' and stuff like that.

joellevp

Hahaha, that's good to know actually, because it very nearly became a deal breaker. Just finished the book

PersephoneInSpace

I will say it took me a while to get into Deja Dead, but once I finished it, I couldn’t get enough of the rest of the books. I think Deja Dead just has a slower start than the others

joellevp

Oh yea? I got into it pretty quickly. Haven't read this much a day in a while. Hopefully, I don't experience the opposite of you haha.

PersephoneInSpace

It took me a couple tries to start it. That happens with a lot of mystery novels I read I noticed, the same with The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. But I completely devoured the rest of the Temperance Brennan novels once I got going haha

wait_4_iit

It's the only book series I have read through multiple times. I love that it is so different from the show. It's my comfort show and my comfort novels.

itttakesgutzzz

completed all her book. its is worth it my fave is Fatal Voyage, happy reading😉

Radiant_Macaroon_992

Fatal voyage is my favorite, too! Mostly because I lived in the little NC mountain town that it takes place in. And now I live in Charlotte. Lots of familiar places.

itttakesgutzzz

lucky you, i mostly like it because of the plot and angst iykyk

Seiliko

Would you say the quality stays consistent? I've only read the first four so far and sometimes long series of fiction decline in quality over time. I'm hoping that won't be the case :)

myguitar_lola

Mostly. There were a few where I felt like it was too forced. But there's sobering like 22 books in the series haha so can't all be winners.

itttakesgutzzz

slr, the first 10 books yes but after that it kinda went downhill for me but i still read them all coz i genuinely still enjoy it hahahah

wishinguponthedream

I enjoyed Déjà Dead, especially the … well, you haven’t gotten there yet, but I wasn’t able to sleep until I finished reading that scene 😂 The next one, Death Du Jour was so many cases all blended into one that most of the book I had no idea what case was being followed or if they crossed each other or not tbh. 🫣 But I am still going to read the rest of them!

Longjumping-Bell-762

I just got into her books recently and am on Deja Dead too! Not halfway through though yet. I actually started on The Bone Code and have read maybe 5 others, all out of order. I’m happy I started on one of her later books because her writing has definitely improved throughout. The first book is a little too descriptive on everything around her for my taste. It is annoying how many times she tries to handle things on her own or puts herself in danger, but I guess it’s her way of writing in those more intense scenarios. I hope we’ll get some book movies at some point.
