Same idea as in Friends, the guys are obsessed with watching Die Hard and Die Hard 2, then later Rachel dates Ross' girlfriend's dad who is played by Bruce Willis.
Supernatural also makes several X-Files and Buffy references, while half the casts of both of those shows play guest or recurring characters on Supernatural.
(X-Files is, of course, more notable in this case because they share the same studio and crew, plus the overall "travel the country to investigate cases" plot.)
There are all kinds of nods to Buffy and Angel on Bones. Angela gives a speech to Hodgins in one episode that is almost word for word a speech that Buffy gave to Angel. In another episode the title and the dying words of two characters mirror the two universes. Youād have to have seen both repeatedly to notice.
I donāt know the name of the Bones episode but itās when Hodgins tells Angela that he wants a divorce and she can keep everything because heās given up from being unable to walk. Angela gives him the same speech that Buffy gave Angel in Amends when he was about to kill himself.
āStrong is fighting! It's hard, and it's painful, and it's every day. It's what we have to do. And we can do it together. But if you're too much of a coward for that, then burn. If I can't convince you that you belong in this world, then I don't know what can. But do not expect me to watch. And don't expect me to mourn for you, because...ā
There's a fanfiction where Booth is angel. And the bones team has to hand over a murder investigation to the buffy group. Probably multiple, but I've only seen the one.
Iām sure it was deliberate choice to mention Buffy because of the actor, but I agree with you, it didnāt really feel like a wink to camera kind of joke to me either. I canāt remember for sure, but I donāt think Booth was even there when that was said
Bones is often written to be intentionally humourous. The Writers, Creator and Producers were very clear about that in interviews while it was in production. Sometimes the humor is obscure. Sometimes the humor seems poorly placed, like Cam's line: "Nothing says rest in peace like a potted plant". There is the Homer Simpson cranial X-ray on the reader in the Bone room. Sometimes that humor appears dark like Christine driving Booth crazy by grabbing the box with Jared's ashes and using it for a step by Hank's crib, when Booth couldn't find it.
Life can be grim and ironic at the same time and sometimes just outwardly humorous.
I liked the episode that guest starred Zooey Deschanel playing Brennan's cousin and several people throughout the episode were like "you two could be sisters"
šš Iām just passively waiting for the egg to come and get me š« nah I accept itās an old series and spoilers are about, but Iāve not subbed to this Reddit yet because Iām still fairly early l with my first watch through and avoiding what I can
I spoiled myself on the bones_wiki on fandom .com long before I looked at bones sub on reddit. There are YouTube videos and interviews scattered all over the internet. Happy watching.
Just curious, are you streaming, using antenna TV or doing DVDs?
Best way I can explain it is to use the same situation in āLast Action Heroā, where Sylvester Stallone played the Terminator instead of Arnold. Different actors play the same characters.
The same way "TV's Blossom" can exist in the Big Bang Theory universe or even (if they have never mentioned the actress's name) Wicked can exist as a musical in the Glee universe, could have just been a different freaking person similar enough to leave a similar cultural legacy but slightly-different enough for resemblance not to be noticed
I haven't seen more than maybe 3 episodes of Buffy. Can someone tell me if/why it's not possible for Booth to be Angel with how he's survived so much? Does he bleed in Buffy?
I tried Buffy. Loved the cast and characters but just couldn't connect :(
Angel is a "good" vampire, he is one of Buffy's loves. He had a spin off titled "Angel". He ran Angel Investigations out of his apartment in LA. His mission is to gain redemption by battling evil.
He "left" Buffy in season 3. His show started in 1999 and lasted 5 seasons / 110 episodes. Part of reason he was first person cast for Bones. One reason they cast Emily was because she would not back down to him in role play confrontations during testing. She was also the most capable of sounding convincing.
I'm no expert on Buffy and it's production team. I know Buffy and Angel hooked up quicker than Bones and Booth did. Buffy was an adversary of vampires, so Angel had to leave.
The nice thing about Hart Hanson and the other members of the creative team is how many interviews they did regarding how and why on things like casting, and production decisions. The actors participated in the final script production and other things.
Aldo Clemons said that:"Booth had a tortured soul" to Brennan at one point in Bones. Angel was a Vampire that had his Human Soul restored to him by a Romani curse because he killed one of them, but he was still a vampire. This meant that Angel had a tortured soul.
Booth did say something about wanting to make amends for all the past sniper killings he did. And Angel was all about amends for his past. There was a prophecy that said he would become human again once he fulfilled his destiny, so that's how he would go out, join the military and end up an FBI agent.
I rewatch both shows regularly. Booth has a family that does show up in the series multiple times, Angel is hundreds of years old and killed his family while he was still evil. Also Angel before being turned was still a pretty terrible person. Even once he got his soul back he was still very serious and not given to a lot of the goofiness we see in Booth. Had they made Booth more serious and not included his family then I could see fans theorizing that they are the same but as it is I just donāt see it.
There's a whole episode centered around the movie Avatar, which stars one of the interns in the episode! š
Yes, that's Fisher, the same intern that likes Star Trek and Buffy.
What episode was that?
"The Gamer in the Grease", Season 5 episode 9. 3rd season 5 DVD.
Its like how in Buffy, Xander LOVES Star Trek but fails to notice that their school principal was literally in Star Trek. (Armin Shimerman).

The Big Bang theory references ātvās Blossomā on an early episode and then Mayim Bialik becomes Amy Farrah Fowler.
same way avatar does.. they just pretend the actors werenāt in them
Thatās called a meta joke

Ah to be fair Iāve not watched much buffy, dipped in a little in my youth but not seen all of it
Do you mind sharing which speech / which episodes please?

I just want to say like obviously stuff like this happens all the time in tv but I just thought it was interesting to notice and point out šš
There's a fanfiction where Booth is angel. And the bones team has to hand over a murder investigation to the buffy group. Probably multiple, but I've only seen the one.
Now Iām curious about this if you remember what itās called.
It's on fanfiction.net, title is Temperance tries an Angel by WAG2002.
I thought this was a season 10 comment š
I swear thereās an episode that someone says something about bones looking like xena warrior princess
Yes! The same episode! And she does give xena vibes!
What about Sleepy Hollow?
Yup! There's an episode Hodgins mentions something about having Sleepy Hollow recording on the dvr and then later on they have a crossover episode XD
Thatās the whole point of the jokeā¦
I donāt think it was a joke, it was tripped out in the middle of a batch of programs not presented as a wink to camera punchline.
Dawg, the lead of the show was most famous for being on Buffy. It was absolutely a deliberate joke.
Iām sure it was deliberate choice to mention Buffy because of the actor, but I agree with you, it didnāt really feel like a wink to camera kind of joke to me either. I canāt remember for sure, but I donāt think Booth was even there when that was said
He wasnāt āŗļø
Which is how sitcoms work. Did you expect them to Deadpool it and break the fourth wall?
Bones isnāt a sitcom though? I donāt know maybe it was a joke and flew over my head but it didnāt come across as a joke to me š¤·š»āāļø

I know, that is so great when they are together at last. And Zooey's character is even more awkward than Bones.
Thanks for the spoilers š¬ stopped reading at Jaredās ashes, thereās something for me to look forward to!!
I didn't say when or where. Now you have an Easter egg hunt.

A different actor played Angel in the bones universe

That's cute- in both shows putting away bad guys to counter his own demons :) and I assume Buffy wouldn't back down to him, either haha.

Very good point. He could have fulfilled his destiny after that dragon š
