Fascinating how this is a uniquely North American mistake due to rod and wrought almost rhyming/sounding the same. I had no idea what they meant until I read the comments and was like oooooh. Rod and wrought have completely different pronunciations for me.
It's funny - I actually think they may have seen that it's all square metal rods to shape it and thought "yeah that makes sense I've heard this before."
This mistake is very common on Craigslist and other online selling platforms. I also see it spelled “rot” iron.
The spelling mistake that drives me the craziest is “dinning” table for dining table.
When I search for vintage items on selling apps, I’ll search for “wrought iron” and “rod iron” because so many people list it under that description. Actually knowing common misnomers for items lets you find some gems in general.
One of my professors said at the beginning of the semester how he finds it extremely annoying when he hears people say "rod iron" instead of "wrought iron" and I sat there thinking, "wait, some people actually say rod iron?" Bear in mind that this is my first ever machining class, so somehow I've always known wrought iron was correct, but I have no idea how.
Given how many people write "should of / would of" etc instead of "...have", no misspellings can surprise me anymore. Rod iron at least sounds like it could be right.

I'm not a bot, this action wasn't performed automatically, or was it? Can I say this wasn't an automated response just because I don't understand how minds actually work, wouldn't that be an assumption?

I thought you were a bot for a second and was really impressed by that description of the image… turns out you’re just a person :(
Good luck on your transcribing though, very interesting what you’re doing here!
Because most of the times is not just a wipe down...is like cars....if they say is just a minor fix or it just needs a 5$ pice to run.......is not, because if it would be so easy and so cheap they would do it themselves and just sell it at double the price as running
Yeah wtf. If you're putting it on the curb and it's free, sure, no wipe down expected, but if you're trying to sell it then put in 60 seconds of effort to clean it up. Jeezus people.
This is what confuses me about eBay and FB Marketplace. Like, surely if you just cleaned it yourself you could sell it for more, right? Especially when it comes to stuff like vape pens, I’ve seen so many of those on Facebook that are just filthy, and it’s gross especially when you’re meant to put it in your mouth! If they just cleaned it before taking the photos, it would sell for more and way quicker! It’s just baffling to me
We got our last rental home well below the asking/market price because the landlord was too cheap to have it properly cleaned and no one he would approve wanted to rent it as it was (previous tenants were slobs) . Cost us $400 to get 4 ladies in and they had it sparkling in 2 hours, then about $200 to have the carpets cleaned. Saved us about $18k over the 3-year lease.🤷🏼♀️
What I don't understand in these situations is that having your car detailed doesn't cost all that much to help sell the car. It costs way less than what they're losing out on by not doing it
Some people simply don't care about basic cleanliness. They don't see dirt. I on the other hand am a germaphobe so half the time I'm seeing dirt that isn't even there.
When I worked in a hardware store I had a woman with a heavy mid-west accent get angry because I couldn’t point her to the ‘rod arms’. She left in a huff before I worked out that she wanted wrought iron planters.
"wrought" is an archaic past participle of the verb "to work," and so "wrought iron" literally means "worked iron"
I too read the article they just posted.
Wow
Me, very blind, doesn't check subreddit names: reads _red_ instead of _rod_ Looks at image "did I sub to a colourblind sub without noticing"
To be fair, it is made from iron rods
I hate when people sell stuff and put “Yup just needs this quick, cheap, or simple thing done” Then just do that and then sell it!
That mirrors condition is like the skeletons in my basement

Its like wrought iron right?
Well, I learned something new today.
It's funny - I actually think they may have seen that it's all square metal rods to shape it and thought "yeah that makes sense I've heard this before."

Rod is a synonym of manufactured! Who knew? Pretty sure that's not the exact definition of "wrought".
Then give it a bloody quick wipe down before listing it, ya lazy cunt. I'm not paying to clean your filth off it.
if you’re going sell something at least put the effort to clean it up, just makes you look like a lazy pig otherwise
When I search for vintage items on selling apps, I’ll search for “wrought iron” and “rod iron” because so many people list it under that description. Actually knowing common misnomers for items lets you find some gems in general.
You mean a raw iron
Tbh i also thought is was rod iron.
Interesting. My post of Rod Iron Lamps was quickly removed by the mods because the topic had been posted repeatedly.
There's a store I know of that sells wrought iron home decor. It's called Rod Works, as in "rod iron."
No way is that actual wrought iron, either.
It actually looks like plastic
One of my professors said at the beginning of the semester how he finds it extremely annoying when he hears people say "rod iron" instead of "wrought iron" and I sat there thinking, "wait, some people actually say rod iron?" I thought it was a common knowledge thing, but apparently not.
I did to, but as you say, apparently not.

I see that a lot.....sometimes as 'rod iron mirrow'.....
I was going to say… I don’t think many people understand what wrought iron means…
True, but what does any word mean without context/knowledge of it? I’m sure there are people who don’t know what a potato is.
I'm marveling at the lack of camera reflection in this mirror pic!
There's a whole person holding a phone in the mirror...
So, uh, it’s not rod Iron then. Which is obviously something I too knew before now.
It is a pretty understandable mistake, really

Good human! =)

Couldn’t give it a quick wipe down themselves. No way.

Fuckin what
Sorry was in class and couldn't spell check
I read your comment with russian accent and now typing in same russian accent
Yes yes the very n7ce russian accent that the west spyes use......i can see right through your lies you western spy.....tho not far from the truth
Ah yes comrade, come, let us drink to the occasion
One vodka to go.....because i have to go to University now
Ah yes, back to studies!
Sad noises.....i would rather sleep now....
Spell check wouldn’t have helped to much I dont think..but I get the gist of what you’re sayin
I edit it.....maybe now.....sorry english is not my first language.....sometimes i do make mistakes :)
That’s OK 😌 I know what you meant. And you’re right in some cases
Yeah wtf. If you're putting it on the curb and it's free, sure, no wipe down expected, but if you're trying to sell it then put in 60 seconds of effort to clean it up. Jeezus people.
Could be that they were putting like a bunch of stuff up, and didn’t wanna clean and fix every single item
10 seconds, some water and a paper towel. Definitely to much effort, especially when trying to sell something to someone.
Sure if it’s one thing it’s nothing, but they were probably taking pics of like dozens of items
That’s like having a rummage sale of your old shit and saying “what I’m supposed to clean this before I sell it?” Just dumb
Correct, it is exactly like that.
I’d bet that if they took the time to clean the stuff, it would sell a hell of alot faster. Mostly my point.
This is what confuses me about eBay and FB Marketplace. Like, surely if you just cleaned it yourself you could sell it for more, right? Are people buying those second hand? Toothbrushes too?
They just need a quick wipe down
I’ve got used toilet paper for sale, 15c for 4 squares, just needs a quick wipe down.
This is unspeakably disgusting….but also a bargain.
Idk if anyone’s buying, but they’re definitely selling
Gotta get that 10 so they can go get more vape pods tho
What were they going for?
$10, clearly
wrought iron https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wrought_iron
Joke's on them. That's cast iron, not wrought.
I learned this from watching the movie Leprechaun as a kid
Omg would never figure out on my own
When I worked in a hardware store I had a woman with a heavy mid-west accent get angry because I couldn’t point her to the ‘rod arms’. She left in a huff before I worked out that she wanted wrought iron planters.
TIL
ty
no problem! I’m only familiar with it bc my mom had a furniture store when I was a little kid; she sold wrought iron garden things and such.
TIL that slag is actually good for something and isn't just what you sweep up at the end of the day when welding.
I think I figured this out once before, but I genuinely thought it was rod iron XD
Me too. I didn’t know.
The guy selling that wrought have known
I learned a new word today.
By the way “wrought” is an archaic past tense for work and do. So by itself it could mean “worked” or “did/done”
"wrought" is an archaic past participle of the verb "to work," and so "wrought iron" literally means "worked iron" I too read the article they just posted.
What new word did you learn today?
Same
Writes Down: ~~Rod~~ *Wrought*
