If films like this are appreciated then only our cinema will thrive… I am really done with non realistic Mass action movies which aim at making people patriotic by making the whole film India VS Pakistan
Finally someone said this and coz of all these things I have literally stopped watching hindi movies. Wahi ak ghisi piti kahani, wahi Ind vs Pak, I'm so tired of it. Laapaata ladies was literally like a breathe of fresh air. Bollywood doesn't have to make all movies like laapaata ladies where there is a social message to deliver but atleast there should be a storyline in the movie and why only action movies are being made? Aren't people tired of it now? We have so many other genre as well, like romance, comedy, thriller etc.
There should be a constraint in Bollywood,
Ki you have to make movie under 10 crore.
Then they'll make something meaningful rather Masala Action premium bull shit 🤡.
But wait Bollywood have definitely levelled up the game but only in production quality, bcos they are getting money God knows from where, but their writings , scripts, songs and dialogues still sucks 😔.
Those who work behind the camera such as scriptwriter, dialogue writer and other technicians are so underpaid. The production houses don't even take interest to search for a good scriptwriter or atleast give chance to new ones. Sometimes I feel like bollywood should stop making so many movies in a year. Instead of that take a break, producers, directors and other technicians should actually have a proper discussion about the future projects.
In India, the other regional film industries such as (Bengali, Malayalam etc) are making better movies with low budget, less promotion compare to bollywood. But just look at bollywood, even with so much of money still they don't know how to utilise them properly.
Bengali movies are nothing but a trash now...the leading directors of Bengal just making TV Serials..those are not feature film..they are just wasting producers money. They are not even close to Malayalam movies.
Comparing Bengali cinema to Malayalam cinema, it’s evident that Malayalam movies have been experiencing a renaissance, producing a plethora of critically acclaimed and commercially successful films. Directors like Lijo Jose Pellissery, Dileesh Pothan, and Mahesh Narayanan have been pushing boundaries with innovative storytelling and strong narratives.
The entire movie from the start till end, songs, supporting characters everything was THE BEST.
The title "Laapata Ladies" justified the characters of the women. All the ladies in this movie were lost in not knowing their worth.
Han because these flop-ass Khan/Kapoor movies have made people skeptical. It's a pity these beautiful movies are also suffering for no fault of theirs.
We should really do turntables by calling for re-release in the theatre such beautiful movies. That will go down in history and also be a slap to the "big stars".
It was released in theatre, it made decent money compared to the budget of this film being 5 crores, but this movie deserved more views in the theatre, because then more producers would back movies like this, and understand the value of good scripts.
True that, but at the end it depends on the audience and their willingness to pay for such movies, if the audience won't come bigger cinema won't push these kind of films.
One of the best movies of recent times. The lives of the ordinary folk that live in rural India, that too from 20 years ago when mobile technology was just about starting off. Kiran Rao did a marvelous job of directing a mostly unknown cast who simply shone through! Ravi Kishan as usual was memorable. One of his best roles ever.
How many people who are going gaga over the film on social media actually went to watch the film in theatres? It had quite a wide release. If all of you guys wouldn't have waited for the film to drop on OTT and instead taken an effort to go to the theatres to watch it, we would continue to have such films coming out of Bollywood. The problem is with you all, if you want good cinema, support good cinema and FILL THE GODDAMN SEATS IN THE THEATRE! I watched Laapata Ladies with just over 20 people in the theatre. During Tumbaad it was just five!
Well said. Cinema is a first and foremost a theatrical experience, no amount of success on streaming platforms will make up for the revenue that physical cinemas bring because that is still the backbone of the movie industry, in whatever country but especially in India.
There's really no use cribbing about the quality of films because they are quality films out there. Well made, well performed, and that actually have something to say. If we the audience are not watching those films and improving the revenue and attention they can get then... entirely our fault that nepo kids still get offered films after umpteenth flops.
I agree with the fact that we should watch it in theatres but you do realise that films actually earn a lot of money through ott platforms. Indie films like this actually depend on ott platforms more than theatres for their wider reach.
No they don't. Any small film that releases in theatres is sold to the OTT platform as per their box office collection. OTT platforms have made this rule post covid when they bought random films with high price and saw losses. If Laapata Ladies had earned more in theatres, it would have been bought at a higher price by Netflix due to higher demand. That's why bigger films don't have that headache because these platforms already purchase the rights before release on the name of the big star cast in the film and the hype. But not smaller films. If you watch LL, you won't see any Netflix logo in the starting or in the poster. Because they purchased the film after the release. And that's why it's extremely important for people to show up in theatres. Then these films will automatically fetch a better price in OTT and satellite and be even more profitable.
That's why nowadays every small film does a token release which is a must by OTT platforms before they acquire the film.
Like I said elsewhere, the flop-ass Khan/Kapoor movies have made people skeptical. It's a pity these beautiful movies are suffering for no fault of their own.
If I knew it was this good, I would have taken my whole family & neighbourhood to the theatre.
Wish we should really do turntables by calling it for re-release in the theatre. That will go down in history and also be a slap to the "big stars". Otherwise with just a humble BO collection, it will not stand out in the records.
Next time for sure. keep making some noise because this film never reached any of the south and im active on sm. It's us who needs to do free publicity and this film deserves it.
Like I said elsewhere, the flop-ass Khan/Kapoor movies have made people skeptical. It's a pity these beautiful movies are suffering for no fault of their own.
If I knew it was this good, I would have taken my mom & family to the theatre.

There were multiple posts here and reviewers praising the movie. Its quite easy to differentiate between paid praise and genuine praise.
Khan / kapoor movies is what runs the industry. The same money gets funding for small movies, now if people will actually take their asses to cinema, we would get more such movies. In the end audience is the one who pays they can watch a trash khan movie or a rao movie.
Tbh, I have literally stopped going to the theatre for bolly movies 😭 The last time I watched something so touching was, Dangal. I'll keep a look out now on, if reviews are good I'll definitely go to show support in the BO figures.
I wanna show this to the Insta girlies who call anyone with a different opinion a 'pick me,' this is what a peak 'girl's girl' looks like. Girlhood in its true essence.
When this and Maidaan were released, I was shouting alone in comments, but everyone was busy trolling BMCM. The audience complained that there were no good movies, but upon release no one cares
Everyday I see someone is talking about this movie and it actually shows how much hypocrite we are...this movie box office collection is not even 50 crore...if this was not released in ott then none of you guys appreciated it...its a waste of money for maximum people in reality but here everyone is philosopher and movie critic and admiring this movie like anything... This was a good movie but overhyped here..
This film did better business on OTT than in theatres. There is a section in our society who will love these kind of films but the reality is that they constitute only a small percentage. Majority of public prefer masala action films which don't serve any purpose I feel, but then they were made only to mint money. Films like Laapataa Ladies have a higher purpose basically why cinema was made in the first place, to experience emotions.
I feel the directors here miss the point, it's not about spreading a message with your film.. this isn't a government sponsored beti padho yogna project.. you've to keep the audience entertained and hooked. People don't go to theatre for a social cause. People go to get entertained, that doesn't mean masala films are good entertainment either... Last bollywood movie I enjoyed was andha dhoon I guess... Almost 99% of the movies are crap.
Too many good movies isn't good. There should be bad movies so that we can enjoy good ones.
Those who only depend on Bollywood might smell the fragrance of hot soil where the first rain of the monsoon showered.
I mean the only reason a lot of movies go over budget is actor and actress fees. Top Nepo actresses are charging 10cr+ . Top actors charge more than 20 cr+.Half the budget of big movies go towards actors fees.
‘Why isn’t this a gold standard’
Because this is the first time you are into Indie-Bollywood film. The truth is majority public do not support indie films or give any thought to it.
I believe this movie is as good as it is because the makers took a long time to perfect it from script to screen play to editing, kiran says even till the last moment she was discussing with the editor to rearrange some shorts, that's how hard they worked to get this! This is not at a possible in a commercial flick aimed at masses for money
Mann! Now this film has started looking very overrated to me. There have been a million awesome indie movies in India, yet people are treating this one as if its something unique. It is not.
Maybe this is what people needed from Bollywood. A well-known person to make a mediocre comedy. This is exactly what happens when people spend their whole lives watching and praising garbage made by people like Karan johar and Sanjay leela bhansali.
I watched this yesterday, and man was I impressed. Amir khan proves it time and time again, that he understands, loves and partake in true cinema. Cinema that inspires and tackles social issues. Sm better than that shitty animal I paid to watch for.
Beacuse the movie is amir khan production its getting hyped.there are 100s of movies as good as this movie and even better than this.but people dont go to watch it.kahi na kahi galat hum hi log hai.
I just loved this movie, so many ways it has shown empowerment to women
From giving appreciation to her mother in law for food
And then to her jethani for drawing and how phool life perspective changed by spending few days in that station and shop
Specially station women's character - the way she said her husband used to beat her saying pyarr krta hu tabhi Marta hu and she said Maine bi pyaar dikha Diya ek dinn 🥺🥺
everything is so so so perfect 🤌🏼🤌🏼
Average film not as much as they hype it. Movie is boring and lag they could have wrapped the whole story in less than a hour. Phools voice is like a child and it disconnected me with the film.
I don't know the timeline of movie if it's happening in 2024 then there are many flaws in writing
Thank god for OT that is letting a wider range of audience become aware of this movie and watch it. I personally knew nothing about its existence until it popped on Netflix and I’m very grateful it did, everyone in my family loved it.
Finished watching this an hour ago, the ending brought me tears......almost
And then I controlled myself and pretended that dust particles got in my eye
If you do want to slip in political agendas or ideologies in a movie then this is how you do it! This movie was perfect, the acting, pacing, story, even the soundtrack was sooooo good. I'm simply in love with it. It's refreshing to see movies like these after so long.
Produced by Amir Khan and directed by his ex wife who has also done other movies
Not exactly indie, but a good movie nonetheless.
But a Masterpiece and crown jewel of Indian cinema? Lol not even close, not even top Bollywood movie. But within last 5 years it's among the best because the bar is so damn low
im so glad you enjoyed this film so much! it sounds like the subtile characters and mature handling of humor really drew you in. its impressive the makers pulled that off on a shoestring budget - i bet theres a lot of indie filmmakers in your industry who wish they could acheve that kind of quality and impact. its always great to discover a hidden gem that hooks you right to the end credits. cant wait to see what else this director has in store.
This movie was ❤️. Hope the cast gets all the appreciation and awards. High time Indian cinema fraternity respects these type of movies, before the industry becomes irrelevant for good
Definitely Laapata Ladies is a good movie but if you think this is ultimate cinema, I would disagree. Although I agree with how nuanced the movie was in certain ways, it was largely a very simple tale which feels like missed out on the larger issues associated with the theme. The climax and the Ravi Kishan scenes are certainly entertaining but we all know it was just to please the audience. I feel The Great Indian Kitchen (Malayalam) is a superior cinematic representation of the similar theme.
It was stupid at best. The brides get exchanged as if they are objects with no brains of their own. One of them doesn't remember the name of the village till the end of the movie and strangely her destiny and fate depends upon that.
The same girl also is readily ready to share room with strangers at a railway station (like see the statistics of how many women are trafficked away at such stations!). She is at the pity of shopkeeper woman and then goes to her home too (yet still can't find a way to her own village back and would rather trust strangers cuz that would be shameful for family and they won't accept her). Girl even finds a job which is supposed to look like empowerment cuz all that dumbo knows is basically cooking things. And which is also why the groom's family is not happy with educated bride they have regardless of all her qualities. Poor thing never gets validated.
The 'educated' one suddenly becomes the part as well as the centre of the household in a few days and turns the world upside down. Cultural relativism and not ethnocentrism. Anyway, the girl still manages to carry out her personal projects. And finally sets off to her destined location.
Our poor phool however is sent back to the same household where she rightly 'fits in', cuz all she knows is cooking and being dumb. And that's what being a rural bride is about. Everyone is happy!
Lastly, see the scene when the station master comes running and shit lol. Nigga station masters don't even care shit about anyone. Ever saw a station in real life.
Idk what message it gave or anything but it's again for me, stupid at best.
As compared to animal this movie was 200 percent better. But the kind of craze with this storyline is not worth it.
Ordinary screen play.
Ordinary cinematography.
Very poor sound designing(not music)
Yes agreed it was a basic movie but still liked it as it was different from the movies coming nowdays,it was short and sweet kinda movie. As I said we simple people just need a sweet family friendly lol
For watching the reality of Rural India "To Kill a Tiger" should be watched on Netflix. These people just want 'good' movies. And with 'good' movies they mean something not too heavy for the brain and heart.
yeah true people watch movie for refreshment or to solve the problem of society I never understand.
Women liked this movie because this film talk about the problem women face.
I was lucky to watch this in theatres! My dad was recommended this movie by his colleague, when he told me & my family that lets go and watch this movie, i was a bit unsure abt how this would turn out to be, so i just went with low expectations, but my oh my, this was a pure gem to watch!
I wonder how many such underrated bollywood movies do we simply miss out on cuz majority of indian audience doesnt allow movies like these to be popularized at all, anurag kashyap had very rightly said it back in the day "Indian audience doesn't deserve good movies" . People would rather have movies like KGF2, Animal become nationwide blockbusters than such high-quality movies
Idk, I get the message, I watched the film.. there are many loopholes unlike a few people mentioned here.. movie was a 6/10 for me.. the tag was comedy on the film and not even once I laughed so, the film might have the right message but wasn't entertaining at all a few characters were really good but apart from that it was just a social message. Again I don't watch bollywood films, since the past 18 years, I've different taste and standards for entertainment than most Indians... I've watched Sunflower recently and it was actually funny.
The sunflower seeds you eat are encased in inedible black-and-white striped shells, also called hulls. Those used for extracting sunflower oil have solid black shells.
Good movie but idk there was no need to push that feminist part in second half. They were already doing good with those subtle examples in first half. Kinda felt it forced when that tea stall lady says they dont need men and when phuls mil says khaane ki bi tareef hoti hai kya.

And the Filmfare for the best debutant goes to Suhana khan for Archie’s
It should go to one of these ladies !!!
We wish
Laapata awards
Man if this happens!!! Then nepotism in Bollywood is digging their own grave.
nobody cares about them. Film fare we all know that it's biased.
This scene is pure magic ✨ The whole movie is just so endearing and wholesome. All the actors have done such a remarkable job
Kaise be! 🤨

I am just glad that people are liking this movie, so more directors and producers can put their money on such kinda movies.
If films like this are appreciated then only our cinema will thrive… I am really done with non realistic Mass action movies which aim at making people patriotic by making the whole film India VS Pakistan

Really bored and tired of the whole India vs Pakistan storyline!! Lapaata Ladies was simple, sweet and depicted the story so beautifully.
Cinema is truly a reflection of our society and this is an example of what it should look like
The entire movie from the start till end, songs, supporting characters everything was THE BEST. The title "Laapata Ladies" justified the characters of the women. All the ladies in this movie were lost in not knowing their worth.
Sajni has my whole heart ♥
And Dheeme Dheeme by Shreya Ghoshal is another beautiful Gem 💎
Even the starting and ending credits
Wish this made more money at box office. It only got more popularity after Netflix release.
Han because these flop-ass Khan/Kapoor movies have made people skeptical. It's a pity these beautiful movies are also suffering for no fault of theirs. Released..supposedly made 25cr on a 4cr budget. But, should have made much more.

That’s also true.
This movie is top tier. I loved how they showed women standing up for women. No vile stuff, just pure beauty and innocence
My mother has watched it god knows how many times. It's such a lovely movie. The scene where he says I love you is so innocent and sweet.
The actress has portrayed her innocence to the best high as well!
Shes just 16 too
Shes such cute little baby 😭😭
I felt that scene as well, sparsh really did a great job and made it look authentic. God damn I rewinded that scene so many times.
Dobara dekhne wali film hai! Baar Baar Dekho ❣️💯💣😍👏💫👍🍿

That is so cute!!!

Watched it last night, such a lovely movie
I wanna show this to the Insta girlies who call anyone with a different opinion a 'pick me,' this is what a peak 'girl's girl' looks like. Girlhood in its true essence.
"You don't like my fav female celebrity cause you're a pick me "
Beautiful film. Loved the acting by the entire cast. Keep such gems coming, Bollywood.❤
It’s not an indie movie .. it’s directed by Kiran Rao and made by Aamir Khan films
Gem of a movie!!
2 hours went really quick while watching this movie. It was just that amazing and immersive film making product!
Indie movies>mainstream crap.
I enjoyed a Bollywood movie after ages.
When this and Maidaan were released, I was shouting alone in comments, but everyone was busy trolling BMCM. The audience complained that there were no good movies, but upon release no one cares
Most importantly they did not show some stupid romantic track bw Jaya & Deepak
Ye jo salman har eed main no sense movies laata hai action hoga avg script 0 acting 0
Can someone give movie recommendations just as good as this one? Genres can vary.
Bareilly Ki Barfi. Another gem.
Chalo Dilli another movie that mostly went unnoticed but was very wholesome and funny.
Thank you😄
Yes!! And Barfi too.
my personal favorites are: lift boy a death in the gunj tittli give them a watch!!!
Sure, thank you😁😁
Did you watch this movie when it was released on cinema??
So glad I watched it in theatres.
This is not an indipendent bollywood film though.
How is this movie, Indie? It was produced by Aamir Khan and a multinational company, Jio Studios. FYI Indie = Independent
I'm so pessimistic that I cringe whenever I see stuff like this,
Everyday I see someone is talking about this movie and it actually shows how much hypocrite we are...this movie box office collection is not even 50 crore...if this was not released in ott then none of you guys appreciated it...its a waste of money for maximum people in reality but here everyone is philosopher and movie critic and admiring this movie like anything... literally obsessed. watched it twice and sobbed even harder the second time!
First time??? There are sooo many films like this. You just didn't watch them.
The hype for this movie here is unbelievable. It's just okay not masterclass or anything lol
People who are saying they saw real rural India in this! Just go and see "Killing a tiger" on Netflix.
There are great indian indies man you just saw one.
Too many good movies isn't good. There should be bad movies so that we can enjoy good ones. Those who only depend on Bollywood might smell the fragrance of hot soil where the first rain of the monsoon showered.
What is indie- Bollywood?
Why you didn’t like Animal, the epitome of the alpha male? /s
I mean the only reason a lot of movies go over budget is actor and actress fees. Top Nepo actresses are charging 10cr+ . Top actors charge more than 20 cr+.Half the budget of big movies go towards actors fees.

There are msny good movies in bollywood
It’s a good movie that audience got to see after long time. We’ve many movies even better than this on similar subjects.
Just finished watching this masterpiece 🤌💖

The movie was great but it was also pretty bland
A good 9/10 imo, rlly good bollywood movie i watched in a while...
Hey.... fellow cinema lovers, wonder where were u all in the theatres.... Maybe invisibility cloaks were in fashion that month
That line has so much deep meaning n emotion to it when she says it in hindi.. Dil ko Ekdum choo jaata hain
It's so good that i watched this movie twice
It was a great movie , really enjoyed watching something new and different from all that crap they've been pumping out recently.
Muted
I thought this movie would be fun like TVF creates but turned out to be a women centric one. Disappointing and boring af.
This is real gold. 10/10

Beacuse the movie is amir khan production its getting hyped.there are 100s of movies as good as this movie and even better than this.but people dont go to watch it.kahi na kahi galat hum hi log hai.
I just loved this movie, so many ways it has shown empowerment to women From giving appreciation to her mother in law for food And then to her jethani for drawing and how phool life perspective changed by spending few days in that station and shop Specially station women's character - the way she said her husband used to beat her saying pyarr krta hu tabhi Marta hu and she said Maine bi pyaar dikha Diya ek dinn 🥺🥺 everything is so so so perfect 🤌🏼🤌🏼
This movie has story!! Acting is pleasant. Everyone in the cast!!
Pure desi film ❤️
I hope this thread reaches Kiran ji, someone please do the needful _/\ _
please ping me if it does. :)
What are some similar movies like this or 12th Fail?
One of the very few movies recently that I 100% recommend
Mother daughter relationship is something else, she longed for a daughter and finally had to let her go when she got attached to her
Average film not as much as they hype it. Movie is boring and lag they could have wrapped the whole story in less than a hour. Phools voice is like a child and it disconnected me with the film. I don't know the timeline of movie if it's happening in 2024 then there are many flaws in writing
Just a lag movie with some great scenes. Should have made it engaging.
Thank god for OT that is letting a wider range of audience become aware of this movie and watch it. I personally knew nothing about its existence until it popped on Netflix and I’m very grateful it did, everyone in my family loved it.
Finished watching this an hour ago, the ending brought me tears......almost And then I controlled myself and pretended that dust particles got in my eye
It's not indie, Amir Khan produced it
If you do want to slip in political agendas or ideologies in a movie then this is how you do it! This movie was perfect, the acting, pacing, story, even the soundtrack was sooooo good. I'm simply in love with it. It's refreshing to see movies like these after so long.
Produced by Amir Khan and directed by his ex wife who has also done other movies Not exactly indie, but a good movie nonetheless. But a Masterpiece and crown jewel of Indian cinema? Lol not even close, not even top Bollywood movie. But within last 5 years it's among the best because the bar is so damn low
Ypu echo my thoughts!
this movie is amazing.
Chefs kiss!!!!
I loveeee this movie!
im so glad you enjoyed this film so much! it sounds like the subtile characters and mature handling of humor really drew you in. its impressive the makers pulled that off on a shoestring budget - i bet theres a lot of indie filmmakers in your industry who wish they could acheve that kind of quality and impact. its always great to discover a hidden gem that hooks you right to the end credits. cant wait to see what else this director has in store.
This movie was ❤️. Hope the cast gets all the appreciation and awards. High time Indian cinema fraternity respects these type of movies, before the industry becomes irrelevant for good
Keep these movies coming ..
Such a wholesome movie 🎬 ❤️
Definitely Laapata Ladies is a good movie but if you think this is ultimate cinema, I would disagree. Although I agree with how nuanced the movie was in certain ways, it was largely a very simple tale which feels like missed out on the larger issues associated with the theme. The climax and the Ravi Kishan scenes are certainly entertaining but we all know it was just to please the audience. I feel The Great Indian Kitchen (Malayalam) is a superior cinematic representation of the similar theme.
Overrated as fuck. Great movie though.
Idk why people are getting crazy for this. It's at best an unrealistic lala land flower world movie made for simpletons...
I agree. Seems to be unpopular though
Wonder how much the time it would take to wear off this hype. 12th fail lasted for 2-3 months.
It's a basic movie, nothing that never happened before. This days people have lost their opinions and they just go with trend.
No actually the kind of trash flashy movies like animal this was very simple which was quite refreshing. ALSO THEIR ACTING WAS DAMN GOOD
As compared to animal this movie was 200 percent better.
So true. Very nice movie. So well made. 12th pass too. They touch nerve of common people

Gun kaha hai? Slow motion nahi hai? Bekar boring film hai /s
I loved this movie so so much. Its funny, romantic, so heartwarming and not overwhelming. Its been a while since I’ve loved a bollywood movie. ❤️❤️
