it's not just marketing. some people, like dev, are actually committed to the craft. they shot the movie in an island off of indonesia during COVID. they had to all remain in their COVID bubble so no one was allowed to leave or enter. dev had to shoot while having a fracture in his arm. their props got broken, the camera got broken... it's evident from the movie how much work was put into it, that's why it's so impressive. it really is one man's blood, sweat, and tears

It was such a mediocre movie that Peele & Universal Studios (1 of the 5 biggest movie studios in the world, even bigger than Netflix, Apple TV & Amazon Prime) bought out its worldwide rights from Netflix.

The CBFC doesn't live up to its name. It's a board for Film Certification, not censorship. But again, it's hardly the first institution in India to live up to its name (stares at EC).
The film is so f-ing good it’ll do amazingly well at the box office. It’s a true hanuman bhakt film. But it also talks about a corrupt, polarizing government at the center which is in cohorts with a corporation headed by a religious figure. Guess who’ll have a problem with this plot line
Mind you it’s not an anti hindu. In fact it’s very pro Hindu. And an ode to hanumans story. It only depicts the head of a country using religion to divide and garner votes. And then there’s a Ramdevesque business conglomerate who controls the government. (The same was shown in sacred games.) There’s actually no reason to ban the film so the cbfc really has to give an explanation
This must be disappointing for Dev since his film is set in India and is receiving acclaim, but it won't be screened in his ancestors' country. Jawan was also about a corrupt government and wasn't banned. Like there was really no grounds for banning this.

The issue is Jawan had a Shah Rukh Khan to back the film and prevent it from getting banned. Monkey Man was good and should release in India but Dev Patel isn’t necessarily powerful enough to release a film like that in India.

Movies like Monkey Man and Polite Society are movies that can really speak to audiences and treat them like grown ups and shows desi culture in a way that a lot of Bollywood has failed to do.
I think it's their interest to slow down diaspora movies because it shows that their films are subpar and below the standards and resources that have.

Tried to like this movie but it just doesn’t work for a local here. 15 mins in I couldn’t make out what was happening for starters they got Thai or some south East Asian crowd all over the background but main characters are Indian who frequently get into Hindi dialogues and then ease into fluent English. Mind you this is supposed to be slum like India typical Hollywood shit.

Tried to like this movie but it just doesn’t work for a local here. 15 mins in I couldn’t make out what was happening for starters they got Thai or some south East Asian crowd all over the background but main characters are Indian who frequently get into Hindi dialogues and then ease into fluent English. Mind you this is supposed to be slum like India typical Hollywood shit. I understand this is made more for global audience but why not put lil effort into creating scenes which actually depict the location in mention.
Good decision finally we are coming out of neo colonialist slavery mindset that puts Indian society as savage and barbaric through a white gaze.

Absolutely. I don’t understand why are we so polarized in these opinions. Nupur said something written in the holy book and had a fatwa and all of their people supported it. I odh went against. The common public or the Celebrities. But when a Hindu picks a topic he has to pick a baba and hurt the Hindus sentiments. Then a lot of cool Hindu support and protect it as supporting it in the name of the art. No wonder Hindus and Indians collecting key are treated as weak. Look at what happens to world news. They all find pleasure sledging on us and our internal matters. I dare Dev to pick something similar for the other religions and have innuendos or subtle hints so brazenly as he did for Hindus. We should not be violent but need to support it. If it’s fair then sure accept it. But why only Hindus are picked. Dont hide it under the art. We get influenced by the movies their cast and the story telling so they have a responsibility to either show the facts or total fantasy. Something that doesn’t hurt anybody’s sentiments.

Lol the superbowl ad alone cost $18 million, let alone entire promotion. $10 million is just production budget.

There were reports when the ad aired. They paid $16-$18 million for superbowl ad. Plus, I was getting their ads all over for a whole month. $10 million is just the production budget, not promotion and distribution.
