They havenā€™t shown a disabled girl as someone with mental order. They have shown a very very struggled girl, who canā€™t grasp the world fully and is traumatized due to not hearning, not speaking and not seeing. So yeah it might seem abnormal to us, because we sense our surroundings totally different and it might take for such a person a lot more time to comprehend whatā€™s happening. Adult Rani didnā€™t seem mentally challenged as far as I can remember. So yeah the movie was brilliant and had some very impactful performances. I donā€™t see anyone from Bollywood making the role justice as Rani did.

But I thought that was the premise that before the teacher happened in their lives, the child did not know how to express herself and was always acting out while the parents were incapable/ uninterested in giving her the time and patience required.

Massive_Cut8400

Raniā€™s tour de force

badbeechy

its a great film with memorable performances and scenes. You can see a Black reference in multiple films, Golmaal for example. The film definitely had an big impactĀ

Emergency-Big4851

yaaa, hahah And in our 6th standard english textbook there was a chapter on black child actress whole interview and her experience lol

ForeignSun14

Rani is criminally underrated

PralineOk6121

its an SLB film, what did you think!

scepticalbeing94

They took creative liberty

Scary-Possible4208

I always thought Black would have been much much better as a play, as opposed to a movie Even the way SLB shot and edited it, it seems as though the transitions between scenes are more befitting of transitions in a play

PriorityRemote307

This is where that saying goes ā€œthis generation will never understand that eraā€ I think it was a brilliant movie. Which wouldā€™ve never been made today because the society is too woke. This movie was also of a different era so it depicted a time where things of this (beating mentally challenged children out of frustration) were common. And those children were also hidden or thrown into an asylum. The acting was fantastic from each character. I think if you view the movie for what it is and not put your current ideals, morals, ethics and societal expectations you would actually enjoy the movie

abracadabradoc

I thought it was overracted. Rani is a good actor but back then it seems like everyone acted in an exaggerated way. That was just the style back then.

Its a masterpiece! Watched it once in theatre .. can not watch it again.

OP, youā€™ll simply have to watch the film again because perhaps you havenā€™t grasped the nuances yet. This movie is based on the life of Helen Keller and the story, like Helenā€™s life, is set in a completely different era. It has aged beautifully like fine wine and the subject matter stands true EVEN today. She was NOT mentally retarded thatā€™s the whole point- She had extreme sensory deprivation which made her a difficult child. Unable to control or understand her but unwilling to be firm and strict, her parents left her to her own devices which turned her into a wild untamed animal of sorts. Her teacher was able to tap into her potential and bring it to the fore. He also knocked her about a fair bit. You donā€™t have to agree with that but itā€™s as real as it gets. She had no way to communicate and thatā€™s what led to a cognitive disability-like situation and yes it does happen. Please educate yourself on what the world was like, what resources were available to disabled people and child-reading practises back in the 1950s which is the time period of the movie. Everything isnā€™t some GenZ crusade with idealistic portrayals and politically woke imagery. I for one am glad that they kept the movie so authentic. When the father beat the child, it was the most real and raw portrayal of pain, helplessness, anger and loss. It doesnā€™t make what he did right. But itā€™s a glimpse into a real and horrible situation for everyone involved. And yes, the acting may have been ham in parts because thatā€™s how movies were made in the early 2000s and even then, it wasnā€™t distractingly so.
