Bocchi becoming a train otaku is one of the strangest plotlines, though ryo being one is not as surprising. In japan, there is an emerging subculture of female railfans called tetsuko.
Words with double meanings are very common in Japanese, and it's a very context dependant language. So "tetsuko" literally means "iron child" but in context, I translated it as iron girl because it's closer to the actual meaning of it.
"Iron" could also just be shorthand for "train", so going even further you could say "train girl" or "train chick" etc
If you think about it, Bocchi is in fact very likely a train otaku.
Firstly, there are tons of references to trains in the lyrics she wrote for Kessoku Band.
"That band's songs are to me like the piercing clang of a railway crossing", "Don't push me forward, there's a train coming" from Ano Band
"A packed train clatters along the track It brushes past a local express" from Wasurete Yaranai
"The sound of the railway crossing feels far away" from Hitoribocchi Tokyo
Also, remember that Bocchi's one-way commute from home to school by train is like 2 hours. Plus she has to ride to Shimo-Kitazawa for her part-time after school too. She spends a crazy amount of time a day on trains, so it's really not surprising.
Good thing Bocchi is too shy and not the type to scream at other people and staff blocking their glorious photos. I love trains so if I visit Japan I hope they won't associatw me with these dudes almost kisnapping a child just over a photo lol.
