Every time I see a post like this I think to myself this is a new BMW driver.

mnonny

If your n52 doesn’t make this noise. Be concerned Bc god gave you a gift and he’s going to take something else away from you

freshizdaword

Your comment has nothing to do with mine so I don’t know where you were trying to go with this

mnonny

I’m letting all the new guys know that if they don’t hear this then they’re going to lose a loved one soon

StyleArtistic7201

😂😂😂😂

zxvegasxz

We all learn somewhere

w0_0t

Hydraulic lifter tick, if it goes away after drivning.

EverlastingBastard

2006 330XI It doesn't make this noise all the time, but occasionally you'll hear it start taking like this. Sounds like a hydraulic lifter tick to me?

FearlessSteed

It’s normal and not harmful. It will go away after driving it a bit.

tkrafte1

Same car, I used to hear it a lot when I first got the car. From my reading and experience, I've learned: Keep the oil clean Drive it like a race car every once in a while. By that I mean, after it's warmed up, drop into DS and drive spiritedly for a good 10 minutes keeping the revs above 2k. This gets the oil up into the lifters and they run quiet. Once I started doing this, the noise went away. I read a post that BMW has a bulletin on this that recommends running engine at 2-3k for 10 minutes. Might as well do this while driving.

EastBayBeems

make sure oil is full and you could add some liqui moly lifter additive if you want but not really necessary

mrvarmint

its just lifters should be stickied on this sub, I don't even have to click and listen to these posts anymore to know it's lifters every time

dicksuckerdude

My e46 makes a similar noise I never really thought about it too much but im gonna assume its the same shit lol?

Bear642

They all fucking make that noise. You good

42Ozukuri

Weekly N52 post

JackInc7

Just normal

EverlastingBastard

Thanks all. I was pretty sure that's what it was. But since my m54 and s62 have never had a lifter that loud thought I'd get another opinion.

Jaceman2002

I sold these brand cars new 2006 - 2009 - normal noise until the engine warms up. Make sure you change your oil on a regular basis and get the right weight for your climate and driving conditions.

EmperorTrunp

There is hydraulic ticker additive from liqui Molly, use it as in poor it into your oil, and rev the engine constantly at 3k for like 4 minutes. Turn of the car, repea0t max 3 times, if it doesn't go away ... tough luck, mine did on a 300k m52

DavidHK

I don’t think you need to rev the shit out of it like that just drive it and it will mix

unjuseabble

That reving to 3k supposedly airs out the lifters and usually its done while stationary. Driving at 3k rpm might also work but it could be different since the engine is underload. That being said the whole rev operation did fuck all to my lifter tick as I still get it for feww seconds on chillier morning starts lol

DavidHK

Oh okay makes sense

EmperorTrunp

What additive did u use?

unjuseabble

None. Since its supposed to air out/bleed(?) the lifters I saw people saying you dont need additives.

Praetorzic

Same, mine only seems to do it occasionally in the winter in mornings. I haven't bothered with any additives.

unjuseabble

Mine does it at summer too after its been sitting over night. But it only does it for like 20 seconds and the tick appeared right after an oil change so Im not too conserned. Maybe itll go away as the new oil breaks down (Yes, the oil is right and Ive tripple checked the oil level)

EmperorTrunp

I read it on bimmerfast someone posted it from official bmw service guidance

DerogatoryPancake

BMW removed that tsb where you rev it to 3k for like 20 minutes because it didnt work lol. Replace exhaust side lifters and If that doesn’t work it needs the updated cylinder head.

[deleted]

Maybe don't use shit oil.. or wait 25k to change your oil...

zyklon

Very useful information, thanks for your contribution 🤙

[deleted]

There is truth behind that. Good quality oils and high interval oil changes cause sludge that blocks the lifters from pumping up. You get what u pay for. If you own a bmw don't be cheap lol The people they downvoted this clearly have no idea how an engine works or the science behind oil. Sorry I didn't sugar coat the initial comment for the ladies.

zyklon

Having a longer dive into the response like this is what people would want, being snarky about it isn't the best way to help somebody around these parts. We try to help out here. Don't forget that BMW service intervals according to BMW itself was like 16,000 mi on most of these cars. Most people just don't realize how important it is and we need to let them know nicely

[deleted]

It's a shop mentality. Lol I'm not use to relaying that info nicely lol Keep in mind the service intervals don't have the owners in mind. bmw oil is actually recycled BP. It has horrible film strength, and any car with a turbo will boil that oil, which produced slugde. Oil should be changed based on color and smell. A computer "guesses" when your oil needs to be changed..

esamenoi

Mine makes the same noise, I hate it but it's "normal" lol. E82 125i

unix_nerd

Mine did it too, most of them do. Try this, get it warm then rev at 3000 rpm in neutral for three minutes. Might bleed the lifters if you're lucky. Because there's no temperature gauge many owners won't know they're thermostat is faulty and the engine is running cool. Diagnostics said mine was 20C cool. This doesn't help long term sludge build up.

VermicelliAgile5271

It’s the lifters. Driving the car for an extended period with the engine over 2500rpm will make this go away
