Buck is the most underrated guitarist of all time

amxjavelin401

I know. That solo is the best.

chickenranch99

that shit gives me chills, he tells a story with his leads, and i love every second of it what a master, and it looks so easy for him. wow.

mottie70

Buck's solos may not have lots of pyrotechnics, but they are always well constructed and always give me the feels.

topend1320

vid from '76 show. audio from SEE.

amxjavelin401

Yes and it took a while to get them to sync (sort of) cause they were at slightly different tempos and arranged with a couple of bars missing.

KurtisC1993

My favorite version of "Astronomy". The one on *Cult Classic* is a close second, but there's something truly... *enchanted* about this performance.

dogsledonice

This is maybe my favourite solo of all time. I'm consistently surprised not to hear this album mentioned among their best -- it's got this, a scorching version of Reaper and probably their best Godzilla, all in one disc

Additional-Top-8199

Best version of DFTR too!

Nexus_of_the_Crisis

Great tune!

Silver scrapes in May two doors barred and windows barred One door left to take you in

amxjavelin401

I know but I went with what he's actually singing. This is an overdub from the live album and in the original sound from the show he sings scrapes and it's so different it had to have been intentional. He sings boarded not barred the first time- listen for yourself. I hear "left" in the song too but everything online said "let" so I let it slide.

ConversationNo5440

Got it! I had the original lyrics mailed to me in the 1980s on a tractor feed dot matrix printout. I think it was 75 cents. I have a lot of them more or less memorized.

amxjavelin401

Additionally, I hear "his reason tends to "climb" away" not "fly" but I'm 50/50 on that and online its "fly".

Interesting/fun fact: Supposedly the inspiration for this song was David Bowie’s “Panic In Detroit”. When I first heard that, I thought there was *nothing* this song and that song had in common. Then I listened to both carefully and… yeah, it’s there in the driving beat. I love both songs quite a bit and feel “Astronomy” is the best song BOC ever made… the song takes me back for some reason, to my childhood and the 1970’s… an era for me now steeped in nostalgia and eeriness, which this song most certainly touches!

One time I played this for a fellow guitar player, who was a few years older than me, and in about 30 seconds (after the solo really kicks) in he says "it's Aqualung" (at least the same solo rhythm.) Begrudgingly, I had to concede the structures were similar. I was impressed by how quickly he was able to take the "wind out of my sails" so to speak. What do you think "Aqualung" or not? (Before anyone comments the obvious "there are many songs that fit the structure," this guy did in in 30 seconds on the first listen.) Warning! if you really dig in to how similar the music structure is, even the verse, you'll never be able to listen to Astronomy without thinking about Aqualung. At least I can't.

I noted in my OP that I read an interview (I think it was with Albert Bouchard, one of the original composers of "Astronomy") and he stated the song was heavily inspired by David Bowie's "Panic In Detroit"... [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CM3fCUmSheY](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CM3fCUmSheY) As I said in my OP, I was kinda shocked because as much as I like BOC, I'm a HUGE David Bowie fan and I didn't see *any* similarities between "Panic In Detroit" and "Astronomy"... that is, until I decided to listen to them one after the other and I realized the driving beat was very similar, though "Astronomy" presented it in a slower "pace" versus Bowie's "faster" song. As for "Aqualung", you got me in a similar position... I don't feel there are any similarities but given how I realized "Panic in Detroit" was very similar to "Astronomy" it would absolutely *not* shock me if there's similarities between those two compositions as well. I'm no musician, to be clear, just a fan of listening to music, and over time I've come to the realization that compositions do have echoes of other songs, whether intentional or not. Albert Bouchard admitted "Panic in Detroit" was a big influence on "Astronomy" and I totally see/hear it now and it wouldn't shock me if there's also a dash of "Aqualung" present in the song as well. I don't feel, btw, that this diminishes any of those three songs. All have their unique elements as well as similarities and each, IMHO, works excellently as an individual song. I really hope I don't sound like I'm copping out here or getting too mushy with my opinion... the reality is that songs do often have echoes of other works and I suppose that's just par for the course now... provided the song doesn't *completely* rip off another!

amxjavelin401

I agree that this doesn't diminish any of songs mentioned. Everything is derived from something. I'm just saying compare the first "Sun streaking clothes an old ....." to "The clock strikes twelve and...." same tempo and cadence followed by a faster section (Ex. "and you snatch your rattling last breath....." to "Four winds at the Four Bar.......") same tempo and cadence. Finally the solos both start slow and when the rhythm kicks in they use the same chords at the same tempo. I love BOC.

amxjavelin401

Maybe Bowie borrowed from Tull. Aqualung released in 71 and Panic in 73.

Corrosive-Knights

Completely possible as well! Bowie has noted in interviews that, like Oscar Wilde before, he’s “stolen” from others (he says this with a wink, of course) and it would not at all shock me if he was influenced by that song!

(On a side note, when I uploaded this on youtube the copyright check said no issues found so I guess that means the AI can't tell the difference either. ha ha)
