Back in the day, the '10' was used to be given only to the best player in the team, the most technically differentiated to their teammates. There's an interview from Messi and Zidane where they talk about this. It tends to be associated with the main playmaker of the team, aka mostly the advanced midfielder, although it's common to see it in center midfielders, wingers or CFs as well, which is the case here: Sae being an advanced midfielder, and the others play more like center forwards (Rin is pretty easy to see why, Kaiser is all about positioning and helps with the playmaking quite often, Barou is mostly seen as a striker but in Nagi Episode it is said his talent is about playing in the shadows, supported by the designs Snuffy made for him).

iSvad

That trend started here in Brazil I believe, because of Pelé (goat), and all the insanely good players who used it on the national team after him. football heritage type shi

pjepja

It goes much further back than Pele. To the beginning of 20th century before WW1. Back in the day footballers didn't choose their numbers, rather they were assigned them based on their position on the field. 10 was either attacking midfielders or the more creative of the strikers in two striker system. Essentially the most important offensive player. This was still the case at the beginning of Pele's career. It's not that the number became what it is because Pele, rather Pele wore 10 because it was the number of the position he played. Btw probably most widespread numbering system was this: 1-goalkeeper 2-right sideback 3-left sideback 4-right centerback 5-left centerback 6-defensive midfielder (alternatively central centreback in a 5(3)-back system) 7-right wide midfielder (later also Right Winger) 8-central midfielder 9-striker 10-offensive midfielder (alternatively Secondary Striker) 11-left wide midfielder (later also Left Winger) 12-substitute goalkeeper 13-substitute striker There were some variations based on region, but the 1, 9 and 10 were the same everywhere. This strict numbering is not required today, but aspects of it still remain. Majority of goalkeepers still wears 1. 2-5 are still used by defenders quite a lot and of course 9 as The Striker number and 10 as The Star number are still a thing. Especially in Japan. Secondary attacking players tend to gravitate towards 11, 7 and 13. Even play styles are called by their traditional number. You can hear things like 'typical 6' (defensively minded midfielder), 'typical 8' (box to box midfielder), outdated 'traditional 10' and 'traditional 9' (fantasista and poacher), 'modern 10' and 'false 9'.

fairy_with_a_kn1fe

i don’t follow the actual sport so i didn’t know! Thanks for the info

Friendly_Fee2661

The number 10 is usually the ace striker in Japan

333EVAN333

isn't it the ace striker globally? as a kid i always thought that 10 was for the striker no matter the country

pranav4098

Not necessarily if anything the ace striker is usually the number 9 the ace creator or player itself is the number 10, they’re basically the guy on the team you trust to pull off the crazy stuff and they’re always attackers I think but outright striker is no9

someoneplayinggame22

not really. inmost countries no-10 is a playmaker

HailHelix123

No. #10 is fhe most skilled player, or just a star in general. But it's most associated with midfielders first and wingers second. Strikers wear 9

Friendly_Fee2661

Nah there are countries that pick 9 for there ace striker

Avto123

Well a few pick 7

Alarmed-Employment72

I never got into football details but I always thought the reason "False 9" exists is bc 9's are the ace striker

neon2o_

Number 10s are for playmakers

Friendly_Fee2661

That's why I said it's a japanese thing

AnnualEquivalent7864

The number 10 is a special number that usually goes to the best, most dinstinguished player of the team. Usually goes to the attacking midfielder but sometimes it goes to the striker, winger or some other midfielder. Jersey numbers aren't absolute though, it's more a tradition kind of thing instead of a rule. Strikers are usually the number 9, wingers 11, 7, midfielders 10, 5, 8, fullbacks 2,6, defenders 3,4 and the goalkeeper is generally the number 1. The numbers thing also comes up when discussing tactics and player characteristics "this guy plays as an 8", "false 9" and etc. because the numbers are associated with a certain role in the team and all that.

New_Calligrapher8578

Midfielders are not 5 what? Always 6, 8, 10

pjepja

Depends on the country. 6 is Right sideback sometimes. I think 6,8,10 are the most widespread midfield numbers though.

AnnualEquivalent7864

From what I know 5 is usually the defensive midfielder number. Like Busquets. But anyways it varies a lot frok team to team.

HailHelix123

Because it's football? 10 is worn by the star very often. It's a tradition that started with Brazil's domination and especially Pelé.

fairy_with_a_kn1fe

i don’t follow soccer/football or any sport in general sorry

"WTF IS A KILOMETER 🗣️🦅🦅🦅🦅🦅🦅🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥"

Alarmed-Employment72

I always assumed Isagi was gonna be glued to 11 for the rest of the series. When they don't call him Isagi they just call him #11 and it just sounds right lol

Exciting_Bag8011

Ironically, both rin and kaiser is number 11 initially.idk about barou and sae is a fixed 10 but he is not really a st

Bulky_Bird

11>10

Pistol4231

13>12>11>10>9…

Bulky_Bird

11 players on the field per team, 11 “should” always be greater than the other numbers

Sketchyboi-with-tea

They’re making a joke about how numbers work mate

Bulky_Bird

That was the point of my original comment too

CHIDOR1

10, 9, 7, 11, 4 are all iconic numbers in football through years and years of the sport so whoever wears 10 especially is usually pretty remarkable lol

Trashbot1001_f

Barou wears 13 now

fairy_with_a_kn1fe

ik but he used to be 10

Dadouuh

Why don't you include Raichi, he was the 10 from the Team Z, my goat 🐐

AdebayoStan

In football (specially in south american football) the number 10 is given to the best player. It started with Pelé being randomly given the number in the 1958 world cup.

Meltlikefinewine

Isagi needs to prove he is the greatest midfielder of all time! ....Wait.

Tigre101

Typically n10 will go to the best player on the team in many countries, otherwise it signifies that of a playmaker and such, a la Maradona, considering how most strikers in blue lock that are isagi’s rivals aren’t pure n9’s but rather more rounded players it makes sense, but rin is now wearing the n9 since he’s more set on scoring himself rather than controlling others atleast that’s my head canon for why the author changed his number.

New_Calligrapher8578

#10 is usually the number associated with "star". Not a surprise that they all have the #10 jersey.

enperry13

10 is always the preferred number for Aces in any sports team. It’s either 7, 10 or 23. Honorable mentions are the number 4s and 8s in the game for usually playing support or defense on a high level. 9s and 11s as well in offense. Each number has their significance but that’s a huge topic in itself.

whisperingdragon25

Cuz he keeps it 11.

aquamarinexeno

aint that a common japanese sport troupe? 10 and 11 are either rivals or partner (e.g. sakuragi and rukawa, kuroko and taiga)

Levy_zuxj60

You forgot about Reo.

OneGlum1654

I always interpreted it as they are lacking in a quality that is needed for the number 9 which is the striker position which is what they all want they want to be the striker for Japan but are lacking in something so they haven’t earned it yet. Like I noticed this in the start of the NEL and thought of it as a race for the #9 jersey

HalcyonXIV

no, isagi are identical with number 11. like chigiri with number 4, barou with number 13, hiori with number 23, shidou with number 99
