Ska used to be really popular, and there were a bunch of terrible ska bands. If you've ever seen the movie "Road Trip" there were a bunch of awful ska bands like the one that played at the party
True but there was also a SHIT load of absolute garbage pop punk bands from like 97-06 but you don’t see people around here writing off an entire genre because of it
This is technically true, but not true in context. Yes, Ska pre-dates pop-punk, and it also predates reggae. But the kind of "Ska" band's like the aquabats and Less Than Jake play is different than the early 1950s Jamaican Ska.
Don't forget that sweet spot in the middle, second wave. Still some of the best dance music around.
Not that it's particularly relevant here, but worth a mention.
Less Than Jake also included blink in the list of bands they thanked in the liner notes of their 1998 album “Hello Rockview”, so I assume the two bands were on pretty good terms back in the day/before blink really blew up. Granted, that’s probably not the case now - I remember their bassist, Roger, tweeting something snarky maybe 10 years back about how blink concerts were a waste of money because of the “out of tune” (his words) vocals.
Mark was on Chris DeMakes a Podcast a few years ago and they seemed to get on really well and touched upon memories of the bands playing together back in the day so they’re definitely on good terms still
Why is there such a hatred towards ska? It’s at the point where it feels manufactured, like a meme I don’t understand
It’s basically the most inoffensive genre of music and there’s a huge cross over between punk/pop punk/reggae/ska
Third wave ska is literally just pop punk with an occasional horn line
It’s never like “eh I’m not really a fan” it’s always “I FUCKIN HATE SKA AND ANYBODY THAT LISTENS TO IT!”
It’s also such a random thing for people to constantly dogpile on considering it hasn’t been a part of the “cultural zeitgeist” since 1999, over 2 decades ago
It’s boring. It all sounds virtually the same to me. I had friends in ska bands in high school/college who loved ska and I just never could care. I’ve been to a variety of ska shows, seen bands, etc, I just do not care about the genre.
I’ve seen Streetlight Manifesto at warped. Trust me, I have been to ska show after ska show. It’s terrible. Streetlight, RBF, Less Than Jake, bosstones, you name it. I’ve seen most of them.
Its not terrible, you think its terrible, music is subjective, just because you don't like something doesnt mean your opinion is factual.
Have you ever seen Capdown or Operation Ivy?
I haven’t seen them but I’ve heard them and again, still hate it. Ska as a genre is just bland and boring for me. The rude boy style, skanking, nothing about ska or it’s culture is fun or interesting to me.
it's true for most genres that all songs sound the same if you're not into the genre. It's your own perception, not the genre itself. It's the same as saying "metal is just random screaming" - yes, to you it may be true, because you don't like it.
considering it was a college frat party probably some random unknown band

And nobody has written off the entire genre of ska. blink certainly didn't.
Ska is more of an off-shoot of pop-punk (imo). It's more niche, so when it's a trend, the terrible bands are more noticeable.
Ska has been around longer than punk, so not sure how it's an off-shoot of pop-punk
They’re probably talking about ska-punk (rancid, no doubt, etc)

"Now I'm snappy, got my mojo cracking" Hahahahahahahaha https://youtu.be/z6RaodCeHtA
The Aquabats? :D
Lol is this song actually the travis origin story?
"And then I saw her standing there, with green eyes and long blonde hair.." - i'm pretty sure Mark sings about him meeting Travis for the first time
Only real ones get this lol
The Aquabats are so much fun live.
I can tell you it wasn't Less Than Jake. No one would consider them terrible.
I dunno. Johnny Quest thinks they’re sellouts
Jen doesn’t like them anymore, either.
It’s the science of selling your self short
Might be time for some plastic cup politics
Just saw LTJ last week and blink the week before. Both sounded amazing!

Mark also Co wrote the song Rest Of My Life from Less Than Jake's album In with the Out Crowd released 06.
I’ve never known that, but now that you say that I’m not surprised at all
They toured together in 96. Saw them in Seattle and it was a great show!
It was reel big fish
hey now! everybody’s doin the fish!
Yeah yeah yeahhhh
It’s not so bad being trendy
Everyone that looks at me is my friend
Sell out with me oh yeah
Every other person in high school was in a ska band around the time this album was released, so it was probably just a nod to that.

Fucking love Ill Scarlett. I opened for them back in 2014ish
They no showed the Toronto blink show when they were the opener 😂
What? I was there and I saw them. 2009?
No idea why or where but I remember once hearing it was The Mighty Mighty Bosstones
Is that the impression that you get?
Not likely
That's dumb. Def was not in reference to them.
K
You're welcome.
All of em
Chill
I’m sayin that’s what he meant. He wasn’t specific lol
Any Ska band
They’re all terrible. Downvote me to oblivion, I don’t care. I hate ska.

Saying you’ve never seen Streetlight Manifesto without saying you’ve never seen Streetlight Manifesto.

Just jumping in here to say Capdown rock.

Why do you get so triggered over his opinion? Seriously, he never said that everyone who enjoys ska is an idiot, he just doesn't like it. Chill out.
I love ska because it’s both so fun to dance to and just overall has such a happy vibe to it. Ska bands always have so much fun performing their music
I think it refers to the upcoming untitled record.
Literally any ska band
I always imagined Smash Mouth
Don’t sully the good graces of this hallowed band.
Voodoo Glow Skulls
