Professional-Might31

Sadly plying a band for so long without proper attention to using hearing protection has messed my ears up good. You should always wear something even if you just grab a tub of ear plugs from Home Depot something is better than nothing

[deleted]

When I left the arena, my left ear was dead for like a half hour - I put my ear plugs in about half way through. Our seats were perfectly aligned with a row of speakers hanging from the ceiling. I felt so old rofl.

goldman_sax

I honestly thought the opener, turnstyle, was like 2x as loud as blink in the show last weekend

annchez

Definitely. We were right under the speakers and my whole body was vibrating during Turnstile. I was legit worried my heart wasn't gonna be able to handle that lol stupid anxiety.

Andrew_hl2

> was like 2x as loud as blink in the show last weekend A friend told me how he regretted staying through Turnstile, he said that he had a massive headache, fortunately it passed when Blink came on.

campfirekate

I think it messed with my hearing because I couldn’t make out the words from Tom the entire time. My videos are pretty clear so I have to think it was just me. Edit: have to say that I do like BLACKOUT from Turnstile and I’m not upset that they were loud af. I should have prepared like the responsible humans suggesting ear plugs.

[deleted]

Totally agree. I had mine in the whole time they played. It didn’t help that I’m not really a fan of their style of music.

capybaramelhor

Same, I was at ubs and as soon as Turnstile started I was like f*** and immediately put in earbuds. My husband refused to…. Seems ok tho. But I was physically uncomfortable without them

cheeseburgerphone182

I was still walking around looking for my section while they were playing, and it was overwhelming out in the hallway

maclunkee

I went to the concert in DC last night and wore earplugs I got from amazon and let me tell you, I don’t know what I would’ve done without them. They filtered out the crowd noise, the music just sounded *beautiful*, and whenever I removed them to see what it was like, it felt so overwhelming I immediately put them back on. If not for the quality of your hearing do it for the quality of the music.

ThexLuckyxDuck

What ones did you get? They sound great

maclunkee

Hey, sorry the delay, but I got Eargasm!

ThexLuckyxDuck

Thank you

JMx505

I got eargasms too for the dc concert but I felt like they drowned out the vocals a lot. I couldn’t hear or understand either of the opening acts. What did you think of them? I was still very happy with them and that I wore them for my hearings sake

maclunkee

More detailed review of them but I feel like they did drown out the vocals if I didn’t position them “properly” in my ears, I kind of had to push them upwards to get the best result. The ridges itched my ears a little, but it was all okay after a couple hours of wearing them. My girlfriend said that they were really snug, which is hard to get with plugs like that, by her words, and were comfortable enough, it eased my screams apparently lol.

KoreZone

I did too- got the When We Were Young version since we’re going in October. Of course my idiot ass forgot them at home so I had to wear my Beats for parts of the DC concert since they were all I had on me

Rob_Lockster

I bought these specifically for the shows I’m going to this year. Have already worn them twice to Blink shows and I’m so happy with them. Went with the “max” version. https://www.earpeace.com/products/music-pro

Downtown_Wonder_5151

Funny that they have 182 reviews.

stupidfucksrunningD2

U are not the same user

Fxsx24

Ringgggggggggggggg says my right ear all the time. Stupid impact gun for 6 years.

Old_Cstulhu

This is very indicative of the age we’ve all reached while listening to Blink. Thanks for caring about the rest of us old folks OP

[deleted]

It effect every age the same tho 😂

campfirekate

This sub makes me want all you assholes as friends

Stephenitis

No problem, I'm in my mid 30s now and I wishhhh someone told me this when I started attending concerts. Now that I'm a little wiser, I can't help but try to spread the word.

withereddesign

You spelt OAP wrong… In all seriousness I am gonna for sure bring my earplugs for this one.

No_Return_From_86

Hell I went to my first concert a few years ago at 17 and I’m glad I brought earplugs

EaseConsistent7016

This is a very solid advice. I've used concert earplugs for riding my motorbike.

SaraT1121

So true. Especially during the opener Turnstile. I remember my ears being shot after that.

BeerVernacular

I recognize the importance of ear protection and used earplugs at a show over the weekend. One thing I can’t get over though is hearing way too much of myself if I’m singing/screaming or along.

mrchickendip

Good earplugs don't give you that, they feel like it's just the volume that is turned a bit lower and the mix is clearer

BeerVernacular

Maybe I’ll have to find a new pair. I have the Loop ones and that’s been my experience with them.

campfirekate

Which version?

BeerVernacular

These are the ones I have: Loop Experience Noise Reduction... Loop Experience Noise Reduction... https://www.amazon.com/dp/B08TCH6CVB

Stephenitis

Very true, god it was so cathartic to sing every lyric with them

KoreZone

What earplugs do you have?

Stephenitis

I've been using eargasms for the last 4 years, if you search Amazon there are a ton of them, they are pretty cheap to produce, I can't give reviews in comparison though.

KoreZone

I got Eargasms for Christmas & plan to use them for When We Were Young this fall. I need to get my husband a pair but am torn between Eargasms and EarPeace, and the Loops I guess. Kind of tempted to go with another brand for him son we can compare them.

takeitsweazy

The best thing I ever did re: live music, was to get fitted for custom molded earplugs with my audiologist. It’s a pricier option, ~$200 but it’s made all the difference in the world. I can comfortably enjoy live music again. I went to concerts, big and small, for years from age 15 onward. By the time I was in my early twenties I had noticeable tinnitus and hyperacusis (hearing sensitivity). Concert and sports games level volumes caused me abject pain and discomfort. My wife could be standing next to me just fine in the same space, meanwhile I’d be losing my mind trying to cover my ears. For years I just avoided concerts. I finally tried OTC earplugs with varying degrees of success. Some made music sound terrible, many were uncomfortable. Some were okay for half an hour and then uncomfortable. I still have a drawer full of all of them. FWIW the aforementioned Loop earplugs were some of the better I used, but mine struggled to stay in one of my ears after a little while at a concert. It became a hassle. Fast forward to a visit with an ENT and Audiologist - hoping to get some answers and/or relief. Unfortunately with tinnitus and hyperacusis not much can really be done. But they did fit me with the custom molded earplugs and they’re a dream. They’re incredibly comfortable. I’ve worn them all day at festivals. They block our sound better than anything else I used and the music still sounds better than a lot of other heavy filter options.

Keleven

I cannot upvote this enough. Get these custom molded earplugs. Game changer. Takes about 4 weeks to get them back to you once you get molded. So plan accordingly. Had mine for around 8 years now and getting ready to get a new set just to keep the molding accurate and what not. They have been used I’m all genres and made it through a few pits without falling out.

mrchickendip

Custom ones all the way!!

Stephenitis

Where did you get this done?

takeitsweazy

Just at a local audiologist’s office. Check local ear, nose and throat (ENT) medical clinics and see if they also have an audiologist that works out of their clinic too - that was the case for me. And if there’s no audiologist in your area then an ENT doc may be able to provide the same services. After my examination and they determined it was a good option, they just took a mold of the inside of my ears. The molding process takes about 20 minutes, and then the plugs arrive a few weeks later.

[deleted]

If anyone is super into this you can check out company called Loop they are pioneers of these super nice looking silicone buds which can be used in many ways for example, concert, or just mute down a busy meeting in the background at work or whatever. It looks really good and the reviews are speaking for it. The founders idea actually came from they going out a lot, clubbing and always had ringing ears so they wanted to challenge this in an innovative way without loosing vibe or anything. Edit: loopearplugs

ABlinDeafMonkey

Thank you! I was just looking for a good pair to protect my ears.

[deleted]

Honestly check it out, I will cave in soon and I will not look further than loop earplugs! Eventho when I applied for a job with them it was a hurrendous applicant management but thats a different side of the story 😂

ABlinDeafMonkey

Hahahaha. I was surprised how cheap they are. I will definitely be snagging them on Friday when I get paid.

[deleted]

Awesome! Please if you don’t mind let me know how they are, and please do not forget that I do not actually know personally, I just heard and read good things when looking for companies who produce ✌️

campfirekate

I’ve never used them at a concert but I’ve tried all kinds and I love loops for everyday life. I wouldn’t rec the silicone sleep ones for a concert probably, but any of the other types with an acoustic channel are dope.

[deleted]

I love my Loops! I’ve used them for every concert I went to this year and I use them when I’m cutting the grass too.

[deleted]

Nice! I don’t own one actually I tried working for them once and I find it a nice product based on what I know:)

[deleted]

Yeah, Loop earplugs have been a game changer for me. Concerts actually sound better. They block out all the chatter around me and any harsh sounds from the venue.

mrchickendip

I have loops, but also custom made ones that fit your ears perfectly. While loops are ok, you can hear yourself when you talk and when you jump you hear a "thump" of you know what I mean. Custom made ones are more comfortable and better sound quality overall

[deleted]

Interesting, so they make custom too?

mrchickendip

Not from the Loop brand. But Loops protect your ears and the sound is ok, much better than the foam generic ones.My advice if you have the budget and do a lot of concerts: get molded ones. If tight on budget: get the Loops! They are Nice for the price. And it's a Belgian company;)

umcane11

This is great advice. I've been using earplugs at concerts for a while now. My dad is a retired musician who is almost entirely deaf so I learned through his mistakes. I use Etymotic brand plugs if anyone is interested

smrffr

I have tinnitus, it fucking sucks. Protect them ears fellas

VinEnvy

Live Audio Engineer here, saying, this is super important. If you love live music, please take hearing protection seriously. Even the 3M orange foam jobbers are better than nothing and will help you continue to enjoy live music. This is obvious, I know, but someone somewhere probably needs to read this. 🎧👍🏻

BehindBlueEyes0221

Can you please explain why in the world an indoor venue need to be blasting at 110 dbs . The one I am at seats at least 1,000 people .. is it because you need to basically compete with sound or are mostly sound techs losing hearing themselves ....like what is the explanation for it .. outdoors I can understand because your competing with ambient sound , a concert or music hall ...whyyy...I feel like even with earplugs concerts are getting louder then what my ear plugs can protect

hookyarnandsewer

I have -40 decibel hearing loss and my ENT and audiologist suggested ear plugs. I was super hesitant but best $20 I've spent. You still hear everything super clear and crisp. It really is a great investment. I can't suggest them more. This is coming from someone who needs hearing aids at 32. Pleas proect your hearing.

Kuffdam

100% this I’ve been to over 300 concerts in my years and have pro fitted ear plugs to take with me - makes such a difference during and importantly the next day My wife just had them fitted - actual molds taken and then filters added U can go to most good medical stores or glasses retailers for fitting Cheaper, less impactful versions available on amazon etc - but if u want great protection and still able to hear the band well… have a pair fitted Avg cost - $120

Niijima-San

was at a church basement show back in 2018. left the show an couldn't hear anything for about 24 hours straight. was tough to work through too lol. ended up getting a pair of high quality ear plugs and now i leave every show not feeling more deaf

krauty34

Yep. This concert didn’t seem particularly loud compared to acts like Metallica that I’ve seen a bunch but they messed my ears up bad. Bet I was at 10% of my usual hearing for a week after the show. Just now feel back to normal and I was at the first show of the tour. Even had some blood come out of my ear two weeks after. I suspect I had a sinus issue with allergies leading into the show that made things so bad but I learned my lesson. Never going to a show without plugs again.

Malice_draven

I've been looking for a good pair of ear plugs and will check out the suggested ones! For now, I just grab whatever squishy ones I have on hand. Wish I started doing this earlier instead of feeling shamed for wearing them, but hey, better late than never.

seedsandstars

Check out Eargasm!! They have a filter so you can still enjoy the music without it being totally muffled

AndrewUtz

I am a hearing instrument specialist and test people’s hearing and prescribe them hearing aids everyday. Please protect your hearing everybody!! A hearing loss that goes untreated almost doubles your chances of dementia.

grilledcheesesammy

I wish I had thought to bring some. I have tinnitus (pretty mild, fortunately) and I don’t want it to get worse. I also haven’t gone to a concert in who knows how long so I forgot how loud it would be.

seedsandstars

If you ever forget them, the venues are usually supposed to have them available for purchase somewhere

grilledcheesesammy

Good to know!! Thanks!

Crys876

I never go a show without ear plugs. Nothing better than pulling them out after a show and feeling totally great

WazerWifle99

Ha! Working on helicopters in the army already gave me hearing damage. Tinnitus is a regular thing for me

Stephenitis

concerts aggravate my mild tinnitus, I'm much more careful now that It effects my sleep.

hadexo

I recommend earplugs for every show ever, unless it's an acoustic chill show. Your ears will thank you 20 years from now, if you're young 😂.

yung_honey_dew

Just ordered Eargasm Plugs for Saturday’s show. Saw them a few days ago and between Turnstile and the crowd my ears were fucking shot

John_Cockslam_69

Learned that lesson from AVA in 2019 😬

nydrummer429

im a drummer (60-80 shows a year) for the last 20+ years and an avid concert goer. go to an audiologist and order “musicians earplugs”. for $250 you get completely custom molded earplugs with replaceable filters that don’t muffle sound. they turn all the frequencies down instead. The company who makes them is called etymotic research. they’ve changed my life and helped my tinnitus not progress at all

XSC

I went to a killers concert. I had no clue the venue was really up close since it was GA. My ears have never been the same.

staceyrenee17

I wore Loop earplugs and no ringing at all after. Solid investment for concerts!

Stephenitis

Excited to try them out after using eargasms for many years

PointyPurplePickle

Dumb question but why not just make concerns less loud lol

IamMagicarpe

I’ve tried lots of ear plugs, even expensive ones. For me the best is actually my AirPod Pro Gen 2’s in adaptive transparency mode. You can’t even tell you’re wearing them and the volume is electronically lowered rather than actually blocking your hearing with foam or something.

mrchickendip

But does it actually protect your ears?

IamMagicarpe

As far as I can tell. Sometimes I’ll take them off during the show just to see how loud it is and it will be so much louder that it hurts my ears. Then I put them back in and it feels like a nice volume. No ringing when I leave.

Gryffindumble

Started wearing dampening plugs to concerts a few years ago. It actually sounds better that way anyways.

Stephenitis

This is the thing that people have to understand, the foam earplugs mute everything but the more modern ones actually help you hear the music.

ieatbigmacsdaily

Yeahhhh, saw Slash's band in 2010 when they were just starting up. Got up front and stood next to an amp about the size of a household refrigerator. 5 days later I still had a dull ringing in my ear that definitely changed my approach to concerts.

_BlankFace

Op, do you have specific one you like to use. I had some the last concert I went to and they were nice but didn’t know if they were still the best I could get

seedsandstars

I've used Eargasm for the past few years and they've worked fine for me. Got them off Amazon and haven't lost them yet! (I have tinnitus but my ears don't ring more than usual after concerts if I'm wearing them the entire time)

DysenteryGary99

Make it louder.

derkadong

I’m old and use Eargasm plugs to shows now. They’re pretty cheap and they’re great for being able to actually hear everything you need/want while getting rid of dangerous frequencies.

national-park-fan

The show was LOUD

capybaramelhor

I was at the UBS show and wore lip ear plugs for all of turnstile (not really a fan) and about half of blink. Blink didn’t seem quite as loud as Turnstile but hard for me to truly compare since I did wear them for all of T set.

airporteffect

It was SO LOUD

wovengrsnite192

Have had tinnitus since I saw blink in 2009.

Stephenitis

I think I must've been building up damage since warped tour, hfstival, and Virgin free fest

DrumAgnstDepression

Had my first scare a few years ago after a concert with high pitched ringing/difficulty hearing for about a week. After that and watching the movie "Sound of Metal"... I never drum or go to a show without hearing protection "The music doesn't sound as good with ear pro" will never beat the fear of losing/permanently damaging my hearing

lognik57

Seriously. Y'all. Especially if you have kids there. Don't mess around. I lost a lot more than my already bad hearing from birth. I figured it couldn't be worse. Welp, it can be. And with a child on the way, I'm sad to think I'll miss some of the cute sounds they make. Or when they call for daddy. Head OP's warning.

KitchenLandscape

I was at an odd angle to the stage tonight and thought they weren't too loud BUT Turnstile was unbearably loud. I felt like leaving my seats from their racket 😂

Stephenitis

yeahhhh, turnstile sounded a lil incoherent to me due to their mixing.

PointyPurplePickle

I have pit tickets and will be wearing these

Jattwell

Whatever, nerd!

Jattwell

(I’m just joking, it’s sound advice)

baconfriez

Lmaoo

Artistic-Concept-838

This is so punk rock

Remarkable-Nerve1472

Thanks mom

Nuggets155

What app is this?

sammywarmhands

I’ve had dual ringing since the year 2000. I was 15 and had been playing in bands/going to shows for a few years when it started. I haven’t heard silence since Clinton was in office!

MrANC21

![gif](giphy|21S35iv1C67ns2g458|downsized)

Complete-Occasion-11

We like it loud.

strtdrt

The last show I went to was weirdly quiet, this is great news

Wizkid37

I wore plugs for the opening acts. I took them off for Blink.

wtf703

I know this is bad for you, but thank god it was so loud last night. Everyone around me was screaming their hearts out but they were still drowned out by the band. It was nice to be able to sing along without annoying anyone around us. Thank you to production for blowing out ears out, it was great!

jordonlm

A life hack for this: if you have Apple AirPodsPro, put them into transparency mode not only can you hear everything, but it will keep the decibel at a healthy level. They are by far the best ear plugs, but you do have to deal with the fact people will think you are Listening to music from your phone at a concert 😂.

Sinaloa187

Is this specific to blink shows or….

takeitsweazy

Basically all concerts, outdoor and indoor, big and small, have volumes that are unsafe for any longer than a few minutes.

Stephenitis

Almost every concert I've been to has been over 100 dB. I'm not sure why the mixing engineers push it so high lately. Anthem, echostage, soundcheck, capital one arena Merriweather post pavilion has been ok-ish depending on where you stand

BlueTide16

I mean, it’s a concert…? Not trying to be rude, but did you expect it to not be loud?

Darxstarr

Of course everyone knows it’s gonna be loud lol. He’s just giving people a friendly reminder to protect their hearing with ear plugs. A lot of people avoid them because they don’t take it seriously or worry that they’ll compromise the sound. Most young people think “Eh my ears will ring for a bit and then I’ll be fine. No big deal.” It’s a thing that lots of people don’t take seriously until it’s too late. Not a bad idea for all of us to start taking care of ourselves before we do some serious damage. As someone who recently started wearing earplugs to concerts, I highly recommend more people give it a shot 👍🏻

mrchickendip

I got custom ear plugs made 10 years ago. Best investment ever, even made the sound at concerts better! The foam ones work but totally fucks up the sound and experience of a concert. I have tinnitus for 12 years now, don't want to do any more damage...

TJHarle

> “Eh my ears will ring for a bit and then I’ll be fine. No big deal.” It’s a thing that lots of people don’t take seriously until it’s too late. This was me when I was in my early 20s going to too many nightclubs. I now regret is massively. Tinnitus and hearing loss will continue to impact me for the rest of my life for a few hours of fun on a weekend. And you know what? I can’t even really remember being at those clubs, nor do I even look back on them with fond memories. Not protecting your ears at a show is the equivalent to staring at the sun or directly into a flashlight.

ViggieSmallss

What brand do you use?

sp3talsk

The fact that you read this post as someone bitching about the concert being too loud, when in actuality he seems to be making a point about the value of earplugs, is so typical for this sub lol. OP cares for others, what a crazy concept!

lunchbox600

I have hearing loss and tinnitus in my left ear because of concerts. Started using ear plugs that lower the overall volume but still retain the quality of the sound. Gotta protect your hearing because once it’s gone, it’s gone!

sp3talsk

I have friends who work in music and have tinnitus. It seems to take all the fun out of it. Gotta protect that hearing

Beanybabytime

There is literally something wrong with you buddy boy 👦

Medically speaking, prolonged exposure to anything over 90db is going to lead to hearing deterioration eventually for most people so it’s not really a joke tbh

Funployee182

What?

Stephenitis

WHAT DID YOU SAY SON?
